Panasonic 2017 TVs – everything you need to know

With two 4K OLED ranges and a brand new three-strong LCD 4K HDR line-up, plus HLG support throughout, there’s a lot of TV tech crammed into the 2017 Panasonic TV line-up…

CES 2017 was purely a flagship affair for Panasonic’s TV announcements – a big, headline event for its big, headline TV.

That TV was the Panasonic EZ1002 OLED TV, Panasonic’s second-generation OLED set, and a flatscreen panel to follow on from last year’s curved (and hugely expensive) TX-65CZ952B.

The only model announced at CES was a 65in version – the TX-65EZ1002 – but a second 77in screen has been revealed at Panasonic’s European Convention.

That’s not all: there’s a second OLED range, the EZ952, in 55in and 65in sizes, with a rumoured price of €2499 for the TX-55EZ952.

Panasonic has also revealed a new LCD line-up with three 4K HDR ranges and two Full HD/HD Ready series for 2017.

Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0 ASPH Review

Leica Vario Elmarit 12 60mm Front Oblique View

This is the first of a new range of premium Leica DG optics, designed for Micro Four Thirds (MFT) format and reviewed here using the Panasonic Lumix G6 body. 12-60mm on MFT equates to a “35mm-equivalent” of 24-120mm, making an extremely versatile standard zoom range. Appended with the legendary Leica name, expectations will be high, so let’s see how the lens performs with a keen sense of anticipation.

Handling and Features

Right from the start, it’s clear that this is a premium quality, professional offering. Apart from the excellent finish we have a solid lens, dust, splash and freeze-proof down to -10C. The weight is a modest 320g, a perfect balance for the Panasonic Lumix G6 used for the review.

MSI B150M GAMING PRO review – budget gaming motherboard

After the last reviews of motherboards belonging to a higher price-range, we decided to acquaint you with a more affordable product manufactured by MSI. The motherboard is based on an Intel B150 chipset which does not have overclocking capabilities and comes with only one GPU slot. Considering this, MSI B150M GAMING PRO targets gamers who are on a budget and are not after “draining” the maximum out of their RAM or CPU but still insist on having a product with good appearance and functionality, typical of higher-end motherboards.

MSI have thought about buyers who want to get more for their money and for this reason they have added a gaming mouse Interceptor DS B1 Gaming in the package. This review aims to discuss the product’s build quality, capabilities, as well as the included software, which usually comes with the more expensive models of this company.

The best Apple Watch running apps tested

Plenty of runners will have their eye on the Apple Watch Series 2 for tracking runs and workouts. With GPS and a dedicated Nike+ version, the Apple Watchseems like a no-brainer – something that can we worn all day, before being taken out on the roads and trails.

But things aren’t that simple. Out of the box the Apple Watch is pretty basic for runners. What’s more, because GPS only appeared on the Series 2, a lot of third party apps don’t make use of it yet, meaning you need to take your phone along for the ride. And as we’ve written in the past – that can cause accuracy issues.

But the beauty of the Apple Watch is the versatility offered by apps and the selection is improving – slowly.

We’ve tested a range of Apple Watch running apps by going out and getting sweaty, to ensure you’re getting the best out of your smartwatch. Here’s what’s worth a download – and what to run a mile from.

Samsung will launch its next Galaxy S flagship smartphones in the next couple of months, with rumours suggesting a launch date of 29 March. There has been plenty of speculation surrounding the two devices though, known as the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus, giving us an idea of what to expect from the new devices.

How will they compare to their current competition? We have put the rumoured specs of the larger S8 Plus up against Google’s larger Pixel device, the Pixel XL, to see how they might differ based on the speculation.

2017 Triumph Street Triple RS Review: First Ride

The last time Triumph conducted a major revamp of its Street Triple family was 2013. At that press launch Triumph didn’t feel it necessary to include any track time because even the uptown R model remained predominantly a street bike. Four years on and Triumphhas reshuffled the Street Triple deck and expanded the portfolio to three models (S, R, RS), each with a specific focus including the new performance leader RS model we just finished testing in Spain. While still largely a street bike, the RS features enough go-fast performance Triumph felt compelled to showcase the bike’s wherewithal around one of the most famous Spanish racetracks, Catalunya.

While the 2013 Street Triple R was a substantial uptick to the original ’09 model, it maintained the same 675cc inline-Triple of the previous year’s bike. Not so at all with the 2017 incarnation. You’re probably aware Triumphbumped displacement of the new version 90cc, from 675cc to 765cc. What we learned from Triumph engineers in Spain, however, is the new mill was developed from the existing Daytona engine, not the previous year’s StreetTriple engine.

JL Audio Dominion d110 Subwoofer Review

It’s another American business success story. A couple of kids, Jim Birch and Lucio Proni, begin building home loudspeakers during summer break in 1975. More than 40 years later, Jim and Lucio are still going strong, having seen JL Audio become one of the most respected consumer electronics brands in the world, branching out from the home to mobile and marine applications. I’ve experienced their products at some custom shops and have read glowing reviews of their subwoofers over the years. My favorite review was by my colleague Darryl Wilkinson, who said the company’s Fathom f212 sub could play a 20-hertz test tone loud enough to liquefy his bowels! High praise, indeed.

f1849e37dcc1d020eaff4eedda5f858a

Needless to say, when I was asked if I wanted to review JL Audio’s new Dominion d110 subwoofer, I couldn’t hit the reply button quick enough to ensure an in-home audition. The Dominion line consists of four SKUs: 10-inch and 8-inch models with two finishes each, black gloss and black ash. JL sent me the black gloss d110 for review, which has an MSRP of $1,100. But if you don’t need the piano finish, you can save $100 and go with the painted wood look; both models should sound exactly the same.

The Dominion d110 is at the upper end of moderately priced subwoofers, but it’s also the lowest-priced offering from JL Aud

Rockjaw Resonate review: Rock solid audio with a price that resonates

In the world of popular brands like Beats, Bose and Sony, it can be hard to make a name for yourself as a headphone manufacturer. The best way to do so is to release headphones that offer fantastic versatility, audio and build quality, for as little outlay as possible. That’s Rockjaw’s aim with the Resonate.

The earphones may be standard wired in-ear monitors, but what they lack in technological advancement they more than make up for in pure old fashioned sound and, of course, value for money.

2017 Cadillac Escalade Platinum review

2017-Cadillac-Escalade-Platinum-640x425

Our 2017 Cadillac Escalade Platinum is, simply put, a full-size, old-school SUV. Its body-on-frame chassis stretches a whopping 203.9 inches from bumper to bumper and stands 74.4 inches tall. It’s a big ol’ boy, and it’s not even the biggest — there’s also a longer Escalade ESV model that stretches the 116-inch wheelbase to 130 inches and the overall length to 224.3 inches.

That’s a whole lot of truck…

Beneath the hood purrs a 6.2-liter V8 engine that can, when asked, roar to life with 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. The engine features fuel saving technologies in the way of direct injection, variable valve timing and Active Fuel Management, which we’ll return to momentarily.

Virgin TV V6 review

Virgin’s TiVo PVRs were groundbreaking when they launched in 2010, merging hundreds of cable TV channels with the delights of on-demand and catch-up content.

But that was then and this is now, and TiVo is looking so long in the tooth it might be renamed Bugs Bunny. Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have long since made on-demand a bit old hat, and Sky Q has moved the goalposts again with its ‘Fluid Viewing’ and 4K football.

Virgin’s response? The Virgin TV V6: a 4K, HDR and Dolby Atmos-capable box that can do pretty much everything Sky Q can do, and more. Or at least that’s the promise.

Build and design

If, in a parallel universe, there’s a beauty contest for set-top boxes then the V6 will be going home empty handed. It’s a drab, boxy affair, lacking the flair of either Sky Q or Virgin’s own TiVo devices.

2017 Suzuki V-Strom 650 / V-Strom 650XT Review

Adventure bikes are definitely a thing, and aren’t showing any sign of going away anytime soon, and Suzuki’s V-Strom (Deutsch for stream) is definitely one of the major players advancing the cause, as it were. A couple of years ago, Suzuki made the decision to drop the V-Strom 650 Adventure, and focus its energies on the base model 650 and 650XT. The result is palpable with a number of improvements for the 2017 model year that will likely endear these rides to their fans even more. This year we have more power, plus a traction control system to help manage said power as well as some nifty aesthetic tweaks and more, so join me while I take a look at what the factory has in store for us.

Design

Right off the bat I’m a fan of the new fairing and headlight arrangement. That’s right, I said it. I prefer the slight bird’s beak to the blunt entry used on the previous versions. The over-under headlight setup is a nice bonus too, and not as sophomoric-looking as the previous side-by-side, robot-eye arrangement.

2017 Holden Spark LT v Suzuki Ignis GLX comparison

The market’s smallest vehicles aren’t selling quite as well as they used to, but you can’t attribute this decline to any lack of quality on the part of car makers.

2017 Holden Spark LT v Suzuki Ignis GLX comparison

Two of the best, and newest, entrants are compared here: the Australian-tuned Holden Spark from Korea, and the just-launched Suzuki Ignis from Japan.

Both offer character in spades, a surprisingly fun driving experience for beginners and more mature drivers alike, and a long list of modern features that’ll please those who won’t feel foolish in something so diminutive.

You may remember the Spark coming first in our five-way micro car comparison test last year, despite receiving criticism for higher pricing than its rivals. But we have a sneaking suspicion the reborn Ignis will give the Holden a run for its money.

Prime vs zoom lenses : Can the best zoom lens match the best prime?

In recent years, zoom lenses have been taking over the hearts of many working professional photographers as the more obvious, versatile choice. With the latest image sensors producing amazing quality, even at extremely high ISOs, it makes sense why more people have been leaning towards the convenience of zoom lenses. Zoom lenses have also gotten impressively sharp – most, even some cheap kit lenses, are sharp enough for day-to-day needs and also boast effective image stabilization systems. Some of the modern pro-grade lenses offer image quality that matches or even surpasses primes lenses in the same focal range.

Beginner Guide - Prime vs Zoom Lenses

Despite all this, prime lenses haven’t really lost their desirability. Lens manufacturers such as Nikon and Canon have been rapidly updating and expanding their lens arsenal with new and better choices. Third-party manufacturers like Sigma are stepping into the game with confidence.

Samsung Galaxy J2 Prime Unboxing – Initial Hands-on Review: Your Next Budget Phone?

Yesterday Samsung officially launched the Galaxy J2 Prime in the Philippines, the newest star of the Korean crew’s (budget) Galaxy. The J series of smartphones have been consistent sellers in Samsung’s lineup, which might be surprising for the uninitiated that knows the brand for their more expensive, hi-end phones. But while phones like the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edgeare the phones that drive eyeballs and headlines, it’s budget devices like the J2 Prime that makes most of the money.

Packaging and contents

The Galaxy J2 Prime comes packed in a plain white box, with the phone’s name written in grey font at the bottom right. The phone’s specs are listed on the rear, which include the quad-core processor (running at 1.4GHz), 8GB of storage, 8-megapixel rear camera, 5-inch qHD display and dual-SIM capability.

Denon AH-C821 review: Big sound in a small package

Good in-ear headphones have always been able to deliver decent levels of bass thanks to their proximity to your ear and tight seal. But the majority of pairs still lack real driving power, which is something you can only really get from a pair of on- or over-ears.

Denon is hoping its latest pair of in-ear headphones, the AH-C821, can buck that trend and conjure similar levels of power thanks to a new design approach that places two drivers in each earpiece, one in front of the other.

Is this a method of madness or has Denon struck a real turning point for affordable in-ear headphones?

Fitbit Blaze v Apple Watch Series 2 : Battle of the stylish smartwatches

Apple Watch or Fitbit Blaze? We see how the two watches match up

Until the Fitbit smartwatch turns up, the Fitbit Blaze is the closest we’ve got to an actual smartwatch from the wearable giant. Inevitably comparisons were always going to be made with the Apple Watch and the Apple Watch Series 2.

Whichever way you slice it, the Blaze is Fitbit’s first smartwatch, even if the company flat-out refuses to call it such. It’s a fitness watch, got it? And regardless of how much the company wants to avoid comparison to the Apple Watch, the truth is that people only have one wrist for tech – and for many, it will be a choice of whether to buy the Watch Series 2 or the Blaze.

That’s why we’ve compared specs and features in detail to see if the Blaze can out-muscle Apple’s second generation smartwatch.

Acer Predator 17X (GX-792, GTX 1080) review – 4K gaming on a laptop finally worth it?

The updated extreme version of the Predator 17 is finally here! And the changes the GX-792 brings are well worth noting. The overclockable CPU this time is the brand new Intel Core i7-7820HK from the Kaby Lake generation paired with up to 64GB DDR4-2133 (no changes here) and NVIDIA’s top-shelf GeForce GTX 1080 GPU. This means considerably more horsepower under the hood and less heat – in theory – from the Pascal-based graphics card. We will make sure to check that out, especially while running titles at 4K resolution because the Predator 17X is one of the first to deliver enough performance to drive all those pixels.

As far as the design is concerned, it hasn’t changed at all. Although, the new one weighs slightly less but unnoticeable. Anyway, with all the good sides of the laptop’s design and build come the drawbacks as well. We discuss this further in the review below.

LG PH450UG Minibeam Projector review

If you want big screen home entertainment but don’t have the space, or funds for a large flatpanel TV or home cinema projector, then LG’s DLP LED Minibeam PH450UG Ultra Short Throw (UST) could be the answer.

It needs only a dozen centimetres or so to cast a huge image onto a white wall or screen and, even better, it’s also ridiculously compact and relatively affordable at $650 (£529, around AU$864).

TpMWPArpP9wjAn6v7aUesZ-1200-80

There is a catch of course. The PH450UG has a resolution of just 720p. If you need more, LG has the PF1000U, a slightly larger 1080p UST model, that sells for $1,399 (£999). There are other projectors in this price range capable of 1080p – like the class-leading BenQ HT670 – but if you’re committed to the small form factor, the PH450UG is the way to go.

HP Envy AIO 27 review

Beauty and function come together nicely with the HP Envy AIO 27, a desktop PC that has everything you need to make it the center of your digital entertainment world. Unlike many all-in-one systems, the Envy has all its primary components packed into the base, enabling the 27-inch QHD (2,560 x 1,440 resolution) touch screen to remain light with a thin bezel.

That’s not all, the HP Envy AIO 27 is basically the Go Go Gadget of desktop PCs.

The base also features a 19-inch long Bang & Olufsen sound bar that naturally blends in with the rest of the base while offering quality sound for music, videos, and games. Meanwhile, the screen has a built-in pop-up webcam, which can be pushed down into the screen for added privacy and security. Ports, which include a SD card reader, HDMI In and Out, and USB 3.1 Type C, can be found on the right side and back of the base.

Hands on: Panasonic TX-50EX750 review

After having flirted with the technology a couple of years ago, this year sees Panasonic go all in with OLED panel technology, and who can blame them? OLED panels are capable of producing some absolutely stunning black levels, and they do it all in a terrifically thin form-factor.

But while OLED remains king, it’s also the king of the mountain price-wise, which means the vast majority of us will be using LCD panels for some time yet.

Thankfully Panasonic isn’t about to abandon LCD panels, and it’s continuing to work to improve its technology year after year. This year’s Panasonic TX-50EX750 is the perfect example of that. We saw it side by side with last year’s Panasonic TX-50DX750 (note the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it switch from the ‘D’ to an ‘E’ in the model number), and what we saw suggests there’s a lot of potential still left in the aging LCD panel technology.

2017 Harley-Davidson Road King & Road King Special Review

The Road King has long been an alternative for Harley-Davidson riders who want a tour-capable bike sansbarn-door fairing. It keeps getting better in the 2017 model year with the new Milwaukee-Eight engine and a special trim package called — wait for it — the Road King Special. Updated looks and performance are the main selling points here, over and above the usual litany of reasons to consider the Road King, and the recent demise of Victory Motorcycles makes this ride even more important to H-D in the long run.

Harley-Davidson Road King & Road King Special

(Road King Special)

My husband is not a fan of the early Road Kings. He says they look like someone partially disassembled an FLT and marketed it as a net-new bike. That and it was ugly, unfinished and his absolute least favorite of Harley’s offerings. Let me be clear, I like the Road King; but even if you agree with TJ, this is not that Road King.

How to set up and use Android Pay on your Android Wear smartwatch

Android Wear 2.0 has a fancy new trick

With Android Wear 2.0, Android Pay has finally come to wearables. Like Apple Watch wearers, Androiders can now make transactions with just a tap of the wrist.

Wearable payments make one of the strongest cases for smartwatches, and Android Pay is another way that Google is finally catching up to Apple.

How to use Android Pay

As it’s only available with the new software update, Android Pay is currently very limited on wearables – at the time of writing, it’s only working with the LG Watch Sport – but Wear 2.0 is soon to roll out to more device, so it won’t be long before it’s more widely available.

Here’s how it works, and who can use it.

Canon EOS 800D preview: Mid-range made accessible

Canon is bulking out its EOS range with a number of new DSLR models, the 800D taking on a more beginner role than its also-announced step-up 77D cousin.

Between the two new models, certainly in terms of specification, there’s not a great deal of difference. The 800D lacks the more advanced layout and top LCD panel display of the 77D, giving it a more beginner-focused bent and a price saving of £50 (it’s £779 body-only, rather than £829).

The big question, then, is whether the 800D makes any sense as an upgrade to the current 750D/760D models, or if Canon is now cramming excessive numbers of models into its range?
