Hands on: LG Stylus 3 review

If you’re in the market for a supersized smartphone with a stylus, but have been put off Samsung after the whole Galaxy Note 7 debacle then LG’s new handset might be for you. Say hello to the LG Stylus 3.

There’s no mistaking what the main selling point of this phone is, it’s right there in the name.

The stylus itself slides nicely into the body of the Stylus 3 from the top right corner, and the phone can detect when the pen is in and out of its frame.

Slide the stylus out and a circular pen icon will appear on screen – give it a tap and you’ll get a few shortcuts to drawing and note taking applications allowing you to wield the power of the pen almost instantly.

Huawei Mate 9 Pro preview: The Mate we wanted all along

When Huawei unveiled the Mate 9 it overshadowed it by revealing a smaller-scale and better designed Porsche Design model in tandem. But the latter model’s limited availability and €1,395 price tag clearly demonstrated it wasn’t a model for the masses.

Now Huawei has gone and changed all that, with the reveal of the Mate 9 Pro: a Porsche Design doppelgänger, minus the special edition’s branding, that looks more than a little bit like the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge.

That means a 5.5-inch (2560 x 1440; QHD) screen, curved edges, front-placed fingerprint scanner and physical home button, alongside off-screen capacitive buttons. It’s available in white or silver only, the latter of which doesn’t half love showing up smeary fingerprints.

Hands on: Panasonic EZ1002 OLED review

It’s rare that we find ourselves getting too excited by a television’s sound set-up, but we did exactly that when we first laid eyes on Panasonic’s new OLEDtelevision, the Panasonic EZ1002, which was announced at CES 2017.

The new set is Panasonic’s flagship television for 2017, and is expected to be available by around June 2017, at a price that’s yet to be announced. The set will have the model number EZ1000 in mainland Europe, and EZ1002 in the UK, the latter indicating the model’s support for Freeview Play.

We got a chance to try the television out for ourselves on the show floor, and we came away impressed not only by the television’s image performance, but also by its audio set-up, which we felt offers a nice compromise between sound quality and thinness.

Hands on: Mio Slice review

Most fitness trackers are designed to encourage you to reach 10,000 steps a day – but Mio’s new Slice is trying to do something very different by making wristwear that’s more personalized to your specific fitness needs.

Mio has previously revealed its Pai technology, but this is the first time we’ve seen it integrated into a wearable.

Along with a heart rate monitor, and its fitness and sleep tracking capabilities, the Mio Slice may be a good addition to your fitness routine. Here’s our first look.

Samsung Galaxy S8 vs Galaxy S7: What’s the rumoured difference?

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is due to arrive in April, if rumours are anything to go by anyway. It will succeed the current Galaxy S7 and if all the leaks are to be believed, it will be a great device.

We’ve compared the rumoured specs of the Galaxy S8 to the Galaxy S7to see how they might compare and what the new smartphone could bring to fill the huge shoes of the S7.

samsung-galaxy-s7-edge-1

  • Similar dimensions reported
  • Slimmer bezels on S8 rumoured
  • USB Type-C, no headphone jack and no home button suggested for S8

Leaks suggest the Samsung Galaxy S8 will bring a few cosmetic changes to the Galaxy S7. Very slim bezels, a home button built into the display and a dedicated personal assistant side-button have all been suggested.

Hyundai’s Self-Driving Ioniq Review : Amazingly Smart, Can Cause Road Rage

[su_youtube url=”https://youtu.be/GQghUE-L24k”]Picture 10 of 12[/su_youtube]

Taking a Spin in Hyundai’s Self-Driving Ioniq

I’ve been testing a new car, but I never actually drove it. That’s because it drives itself.

It’s the shape of things to come: autonomous vehicles rolling along without human drivers. Hyundai is the latest automaker to take the wraps off of its self-driving technology. For Hyundai, this comes in the form of research versions of the company’s new Ioniq.

Image: Nick Bush/Tom's Guide

I rode along with an engineer from Hyundai, recording the journey as we traversed the streets of Las Vegas. The test vehicles, with large “Autonomous” decals emblazoned on the sides, were two Ioniq compact cars, an EV (or electric vehicle) model and a hybrid version. Both will appear early next year in nonautonomous form. A plug-in hybrid version will follow later in the year.

Withings Steel HR review : Smart compromise

Withings has made a watch that walks the line between smartwatch and analogue timepiece with impressive skill. As a fitness tracker it’s among the most feature-packed and best looking; as a running watch it’s still quite pared down, despite a heart rate monitor that works like a charm. Withings has made a smart analogue watch that looks gorgeous and doesn’t spread itself too thin, and comes out as one of the best hybrids out there right now.

Withings Steel HR

2016 was the year we saw the hybrid smartwatch flourish, and in 2017, the Withings Steel HR wants to prove that smart analogue watches can also pack a real fitness-tracking punch.

An upgrade to the Activité Steel, the big new feature is the optical heart rate monitor, which aims to make the watch a better, more useful day-to-day fitness tracker.

It’s trying to go beyond the basic step and sleep tracking that you’ll find on other hybrid smartwatches like the Misfit Phase or Fossil’s legion of designer connected timepieces. But it’s also trying to provide a better solution for smartwatch notifications where space for a screen is limited.

2017 KTM 1090 Adventure R / 1290 Super Adventure R / 1290 Super Adventure T Review

KTM  continues to expand and refine its adventure bike line with its 2017 1090 Adventure R and the 1290 duo, the Super Adventure R and Super Adventure T. Revealed to the world at the 2016 INTERMOT show in Cologne, Germany, these bikes benefit from KTM’s not-inconsiderable experience with off-road bikes and its more recent foray into the world of naked street/superbikes . The engines punch above their weight, and the electronic magic really shows the genius of Austrian engineering, which is a lot like German engineering. (…just with a sense of humor?).

Design

KTM 1090 Adventure R / 1290 Super Adventure R / 1290 Super Adventure T

(1290 Super Adventure R)

Adventure bikes are a curious creature. They are an attempt to bring two wildly dissimilar riding styles together on a single platform, and good performance on one surface frequently comes to the detriment of the other. KTM attempts to strike a balance with this line that carries long-stroke suspension and plenty of ground clearance along with the ABS and traction control street riders expect nowadays. It is this combination of demands that drives the unusual features that have become standard for the genre.

McIntosh MT5 review

Few high-end companies can boast a heritage like the McIntosh brand. It’s easily one of the oldest around, founded in Maryland, USA in back in 1949.

In comparison, the likes of Mark Levinson, Krell, and Audio Research are just getting started.

Over the years McIntosh has made pretty much every part of the hi-fi chain, but the brand is best known for its distinctively styled amplifiers.

Their identity invariably reinforced by the company’s traditional glass fronts, VU meters and less than subtle backlighting.

A new McIntosh turntable, however, is a rare thing. With the introduction of the MT5 the company now has just two in its books, and the other one, the MT10, was introduced back in 2008.

Considering that its current expertise lies more in electronics, and to a lesser extent, speakers, we wonder whether the company can truly deliver on the record-playing front.

New NVIDIA SHIELD TV hands-on at CES 2017: all about that controller

My initial experience with NVIDIA SHIELD 2017 was a positive one. While the device does not – at first – seem to be all that different from its predecessor, several key distinctions make the release of 2017’s SHIELD an important one. One of these is the dedication to legacy users NVIDIA is showing with this new product – all software features and connectivity to new devices will be given to the previous model – it’ll work just as well as this new one.

img_20170105_110618-960x720

I’m excited about getting to use this new NVIDIA SHIELD device at home, even if it has the same processor, RAM, storage, and connectivity as the previous model. This comes from my personal perspective as an every-single-day SHIELD user – I’ve been using the original NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV device since before its public release. After I reviewed the original NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV, I got one connected to my living room TV and haven’t stopped using it since.

Dell Canvas hands-on: Surface Studio gets a slick art rival

Dell may be one of Microsoft’s closest Windows partners, but that didn’t stop it bringing along some Surface Studio competition to CES today. The Dell Canvas may not have a built-in computer like Microsoft’s posable all-in-one, but pair it with a Windows notebook – and, optionally, a second display – and you have the art hub any Photoshop pro could be proud of. I stopped by to rub my grubby fingers all over it.

First, the basics. The Canvas is basically a 27-inch LCD display, but instead of standing upright as you’d expect, it lies flat on the table. You can lay it down almost flat, or alternatively prop it up on a pop-out easel stand that’s underneath.

Focal Utopia by Tournaire preview: Yes, these really are a $120,000 pair of headphones

We’ll start by saying that there is no doubt that the Focal Utopia open-back, over-ear headphones are astounding. They are quite possibly the best headphones we’ve ever used and every ounce of the renowned French manufacturer’s audio expertise is right there for you to enjoy.

phpiwdyiy

However, the Tournaire edition, made in collaboration with one of France’s top jewellers, will set you back $120,000 (around £97,000). That’s a staggering amount to pay for a sports car let along a pair of headphones. So why will they set you back so much?

Well, you have the hand decorated gold and diamond elements to thank for that.

2016 – 2017 Indian Chief Vintage Review

The word “vintage” gets tossed around a lot, but when a company with a history as long as Indian Motorcycles uses it, you can believe they mean it. Though the company has changed hands many times, the Chief  model family, in one form or another, has usually been part of the Indian lineup since its inception in 1922. Indian Motorcycles, under Polaris Industries Inc., keeps that tradition alive with its 2017 Chief Vintage. The designers build upon 95 years of Chief tradition with this ride, and while all Indians show their historical roots in varying degrees, none is quite as overt as the aptly named Vintage. Join me while I look at Indian’s latest effort to bring “old-school” to the 21st century.

Design

Indian Chief Vintage

At a glance, the Vintage looks like it was torn from a page in history. The full front fender, with its traditional figurehead, takes us all the way back to 1940 when Indian first started using their now-iconic, skirted fenders. Cast your eye down the top lines. Follow them down the fat fuel tank and across the saddle, and you will come away with the impression that there really could be a rigid rear end under all that sheet metal. It’s an illusion of course, but it adds to the suggestion of antiquity.

Hands on: Misfit Vapor review

Misfit has been creating fashionable but useful fitness trackers for a number of years now, but the Vapor is the first time the company has created a smartwatch.

The Vapor still feels like a Misfit product though, putting your fitness goals at the heart of your wristwear.

It also offers up a lot more than we’ve seen before from Misfit, including apps for weather, messaging and much more.

Misfit Vapor price and release date

kfj9seu3fhnyrdqgefuwwc-650-80

The Misfit Vapor costs $199 (about £160, AU$270), making it the most expensive Misfit device to date. Compared to the competition in this space though, the Vapor isn’t all that expensive.

Misfit hasn’t shared an official release date for the Vapor and instead simply said it’s “coming later this year”. That may mean it’s a long wait until you’ll be wearing one of these on your wrist.

Hands on: LG SJ9 Soundbar review

fe289821bd1a88106fee3ce8291d9168

We were sceptical that Dolby’s new 3D surround sound technology could ever make it into a soundbar.

That was until last year’s Samsung HW-K850 absolutely blew us away with its use of the technology, which uses its speakers to not only create the illusion that sound is coming from behind you (as is with traditional surround sound), but also above you.

Now LG has also entered the Dolby Atmos game with the 5.1.2 channel SJ9 soundbar, which the company was showing off at CES 2017 and which produces some very impressive surround sound results.

Hands on: TCL Moveband review

id195982

TCL – the mothership behind the Alcatel brand and now BlackBerry handsets too – announced a new, low cost fitness tracker at CES 2017 in Las Vegas which will appeal to those looking to get into wearables for the first time.

The simple black plastic block isn’t exactly the height of style, but it’s small and light enough to sit unassumingly on your wrist and with a choice of 10 different one-size-fits-all straps (five aimed at men, and five geared toward women) means you can add a splash of color to the Moveband.

The plastic unit slides onto the straps, and it’s easy to swap it between different bands if you like to match your accessories with your outfits.

Hands on: Samsung Galaxy A3 2017 review

Samsung has given its mid-range Galaxy A range a fresh new design taking elements of the Galaxy S7 and applying them to the new, cheaper handsets.

The Galaxy A3 is the smallest and therefore cheapest member of the new range, but still features a lot of high spec that make it worth taking a look at for your new phone.

Announced alongside the Galaxy A5, the Galaxy A3 features a 4.7-inch display, an octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM, a fingerprint scanner and much more.

Samsung Galaxy A3 release date and price

wk2rurbedxepwjrgmhrhcm-650-80

Samsung has confirmed the Galaxy A range will be coming to the UK at some point in February with pre-orders opening on January 20.

Whether the Galaxy A3 will come to the US or Australia is currently unclear. In the UK however, retailer Mobile Fun has put it on sale for only £299 (around $365/AU$505).

2015 – 2017 Indian Chief Classic Review

The base model cruiser in the Indian Motorcycle lineup, the Chief Classic carries the vintage badging and iconic lighted War Bonnet that is still the hallmark of the brand even through the fits, starts and financial turmoil of various owners during the post-WWII years, right up to the turn of the century.

Since Polaris acquired it in 2011, Indian has become its top-selling motorcycle brand. Carried forward for 2017, the Chief Classic has the styling and valenced fenders that identify it as classic Indian and it has rider amenities and features such as ABS, cruise control, keyless starting, electronic fuel injection and a manually-adjustable single-shock swingarm.

Design

Indian Chief Classic

For a cruiser, I expect it to have a low seat height and the Chief Classic doesn’t disappoint. At 26 inches, even I can reach the ground. The swept-back bars and forward foot controls give you an easy-cruising windsock riding position and the Chief Classic has a soft, responsive throttle and a smooth, quick-responding clutch with very good low-speed stability. At least that’s now it seems to me.

Hands on: Casio WSD-F20 review

Billed as smarter and more convenient, and part of Casio’s range of highly innovative outdoor gear, the WSD-F20 brings rugged design, enhanced features and GPS.

While mainstream mobile manufacturers appear to have cooled on the idea of Android Wear, traditional watch makers aren’t letting the platform die and the Casio WSD-F20 is the latest timepiece to utilize Google’s wearable software.

There’s no missing the WSD-F20, with its commanding presence on the wrist (measuring 61.7 x 56.4 x 15.7mm) and over-sized protective bezels hammering home the rugged nature of this wearable.

In fact the body meets the United States military standard for environmental durability – which means it will withstand a battering, and it’s also water resistant up to depths of 50 meters.

B&O Play BeoPlay M5 preview: Woolen-clad woofer

B&O Play likes to do things in a Danish way. That’s probably why the new BeoPlay M5 comes clad in a wool-blend coat, as if it could go camping in the hills of a Troldeskoven.

But no, the M5 isn’t designed to leave the house. It’s a wired speaker after all, one that fits into the small-medium size bracket, so would be ideal for adding some warming sounds to your kitchen or bedroom.

phpji7yov

That woolen coat – which is sourced from high-end Danish manufacturer Kvadrat – is removable, too, so you can choose a variety of colours to mix things up. Its various pastel tones are understated and should fit comfortably into any home. It’s not soft like petting an animal, but it’s easy on the eyes rather than the fingers.

2016 – 2017 Indian Springfield Review

The newest pressure on Harley-Davidson  comes in the form of the new-in-2016 Indian Springfield. Named a “bagger” by the Indian marketing folks, it is much closer to the truth to call it a tour bike. Before you start shaking your head, I would point out that big touring fairings are a relatively recent feature, and that back in the day. this is what American touring models looked like.

Back in 1901 when George Hendee brought in Oscar Hedstrom to help power his bicycle designs, he couldn’t have known that he was launching a legacy that would, off and on, be in operation through the entirety of the 20th century and into the future. Yet, here we are in 2016 with a revamped Indian Motorcycle Company that is thriving under the Polaris umbrella and taking a serious bite out of the domestic motorcycle market, a slice of the pie that for many years was under the de facto monopoly of H-D. They say that competition is good for the market, and I believe that the recent success of Indian products has forced Harley out of its complacency and driven innovations that may never have happened…..or at least not yet.

Lenovo Miix 720 preview: The ultra-powerful portable 2-in-1

Lenovo has taken the wraps off its latest 2-in-1, the top-end Miix 720, which based on specs alone is an all-powerful 2-in-1 tablet. It doesn’t half look bad either and, based on our time tinkering with the new crossover at CES 2017, it feels good in use too.

php07z241

We’ve long enjoyed the Miix range, with 2016’s Miix 510 laying down some obvious Microsoft Surface competition, which Lenovo is looking to further leverage with the 720 and take out the Surface Pro 4. The promise here being that you’ll be able to take any kind of work – no matter how demanding – anywhere thanks to the Miix 720’s power.

That 12-inch display up front boasts a resolution of 2,880 x 1,920 (or QuadHD+) and is powered by the latest 7th-gen Intel Core i7 processorsin the highest-spec version. ODG AR smart glasses hands-on: Snapdragon 835 gets real

The first Snapdragon 835 device isn’t a phone, and it isn’t a tablet: it’s a set of augmented reality glasses. Two sets of glasses, to be precise, the handiwork of ODG – or Osterhout Design Group – flush with a recent $58m cash injection from 21st Century Fox who have been pushing augmented reality and smart glasses for a decade now. While you might associate Snapdragon with phones, there are plenty of good reasons you might want the new 835 in a computer for your face.

In fact, Qualcomm designed the chip with head-mounted wearables in mind. The first evidence of that on the market – or at least the most affordable – is likely to be self-contained virtual reality goggles, which don’t require a tethered computer. However, ODG is pushing that out to full-blown AR.

Razer Project Valerie hands-on: 3-screen gaming concept

The Razer Project Valerie laptop has three displays – and all three are really, truly dedicated to gaming. Each of these displays is connected to the base computer, creating a laptop that’s thicker than the company’s standard Razer Blade, but all the more versatile as a result. While this notebook isn’t the sort we’ll be trusting around clumsy miscreants while engaged, the hardware used to make this project a reality is well worth the gander.

razer_project_valerie_ces2017_04-1202x720

This notebook can be used with a single display, but three displays at once is what it’s really all about. Once the notebook’s standard display is open, an automatic deployment mechanism can be pressed to extend the other two. Both extra displays mechanically slide out from behind the primary display, then inward toward the user. The result is a half-moon shape made to work with “180 degree NVIDIA Surround View gaming” technology.

ASUS ZenFone AR hands-on: Daydream and Tango under one roof

The ZenFone 3 Zoom wasn’t the only phone ASUS brought to CES, introducing us to the ZenFone AR as well. Of course, we had a feeling that such a phone would get a reveal thanks to an early leak from Qualcomm, but at this point, that’s neither here nor there. The ZenFone AR has been made official, and it packs support for Google Tango and Daydream into the same device.

img_20170104_124348-x2-960x720

That’s a pretty big deal, because so far, the only support we’ve seen for Google’s Tango augmented reality platform was in the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro. Just as well, only a small number of handsets support Google’s virtual reality platform Daydream at this early stage. So far, there hasn’t been a single phone that supports both, but that’s about to change with the ZenFone AR.

During its press conference, ASUS spent a lot of time talking about the ZenFone AR’s TriCam system. That amount of promotion is justifiable, as Google Tango needs quite the set up to implement its vision for augmented reality.

Pioneer VSX-531 review

If capitalism has shown us anything, it’s that money is power. Skew that into a home cinema context and that correlation isn’t necessarily as straightforward – you don’t need to spend much to get a fair bit of muscle, as the entry-level 5.1-channel Pioneer VSX-531 proves.

Delivering a claimed 130W per channel (into 6 ohms) for a rather thrifty (in AV amplifier terms) £250/$375, it’s a decent bedrock from which to begin your inevitable life-spanning march towards surround sound.

Fortunately for novices, the journey required to get the Pioneer up and running is far from arduous.

Plug the supplied microphone into the front panel’s dedicated port and by using the integrated software – in this case MCACC (Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration System) Auto Room Tuning – you’ll be ready in the time it takes you to put batteries in the remote control and connect your Blu-ray player.
