OPPO F1s hands-on and first impressions review

OPPO has recently launched their newest selfie-centric device — the F1s. It sports a 16-megapixel front camera for your self-portrait needs as well as an all-metal body. Let’s take a closer look at the smartphone in this hands-on article. Or better yet, check out our very quick video showing the physique of the handset before reading on.

[su_youtube url=”https://youtu.be/HrVHjTSalHg”]

The F1s sports a 5.5-inch display with fairly slim bezels. Its resolution maxes out at 1280 x 720 making it an HD display. Also seen here is the fingerprint scanner for added security — making sure that your selfies aren’t easily accessible by just anyone. It is rounded which, together with its entire face, reminds us of some of the previous Samsung Galaxy handsets. The scanner is in between two capacitive buttons with back light when pressed.

If you still haven’t noticed, the design is pretty much like the F1 Plus so if you’ve been a fan of how the previous model looks, then you’d have no gripes with the new F1s, aesthetics-wise.

Yamaha RV-X481 review

Yamaha has been hammering away at the AV anvil for a good while now, and many of its receiver products gleam like Excalibur. One fine examples is the RX-V481, a well-honed blade with a good balance of must-have features and superb sound quality for the buck.

yamaha-rx-v481-04

Yamaha’s MusicCast multiroom system and Bluetooth in/out highlight a solid feature set. Our only disappointment is that Yamaha cut the number of HDMI ports on this unit from six to four. The consolation is that all are state-of-the-art, with the ability to carry 4K signals with all the latest HDRinformation still attached.

Performance of the RX-V481 is a little better than the RX-V479 it replaces, but Yamaha’s competitors, namely Sony and Pioneer, have also made gains in 2016. For example, the Sony STR-DN1070 offers better features and better sound than the Yamaha, although it is somewhat more expensive. If you want a high-quality weapon in your home theater arsenal but want to stay on a midrange budget, the V481, available now for $399, £399 in the UK or AU$849 in Australia, is a winning choice.

2017 Honda CRF450R – FIRST LOOK Review

Believe it or not, it has been 15 years since the introduction of the first-generation CRF450R motocross bike. Not only has this bike been a huge success on the showroom floor, and in competition around the world, but the CRF450R also took home eight-consecutive Cycle World Ten Best trophies between 2002 and 2009, and remains one of the winningest models in the 40 years those awards have been handed out.

Cherry Mobile M1 Review

Cherry Mobile may have a number of affordable devices in the market that some are even identical to each other just to give consumers options. If you have a little more budget and wish to have what the brand can offer now, the M1 is the phone to check out. It’s got a number of firsts from a local smartphone brand plus it’s one of the few devices out there to sport a chipset rocking 10 cores. Here’s our review of the Cherry Mobile M1.

Design and Construction

Up front, it has a 5.5-inch Full HD display with an IPS panel that gives out good color reproduction and wide viewing angles. Along with the display is the 8MP front-facing camera with its own LED flash and a couple of sensors. There are two speaker grilles on both ends of the front but they ain’t stereo. One is for the earpiece, and the other is for the loudspeaker.

Lenovo Yoga 710 Review

You can get a mediocre bend-back 2-in-1 laptop for a low price or a premium convertible for $1,000 or more. But what if you want a premium experience at a more affordable price? For just $800, the 14-inch Lenovo Yoga 710 combines strong performance, discrete Nvidia graphics, long battery life and a vibrant, 1080p display into an attractive little package. You may find even faster or sexier-looking 2-in-1s on the market, but none offers this much convertible for the money.

Design

The Yoga 710 looks far more expensive than it is, thanks to a minimalist design that sports a silver, aluminum chassis. The lid is rather plain; it has a Lenovo logo and a shiny Yoga emblem. Opening the lid reveals the island-style keyboard, a large trackpad and a 1080p touch screen surrounded by a tiny bezel.

LG SH6 Soundbar Review

What is the LG SH6?

This soundbar is hot off the LG production line after only being released in the summer 2016. It’s an all-in-one, or ‘Complete,’ solution as LG would like to term it, meaning there’s no outboard subwoofer as the low-end drivers are built in to the speaker bar. Aside from that, as you would expect from the Korean giants, the SH6 is a feature packed device with a number of technologies and qualities that make it a bit different from much of the pack.

We’ll obviously go in to more detail as to what they are – and if they work – down the page but they include flexible installation options, universal remote control capability and features called Adaptive Sound Control and Auto Sound Engine. One very prescient detail you will no doubt want to know is the cost and, at the time of publishing (July 2016), the recommended retail price of the SH6 is £399.95/$600 which is not budget for a solo soundbar package so it needs to deliver.

Dell DS1000 Dock Review

The best docks do two things well: power monitors and stay the hell out of the way. The Dell DS1000 is a $222 dock that doubles as a monitor stand to put your external display front and center. While it saves you from having to keep a separate docking station under your monitor stand, it can hold only one display and the ports can be difficult to reach.

Dell’s dock uses Alt-mode over USB Type-C to send data, charging power and video over a single cable, without requiring a driver or software install. However, as with other Alt-mode docks, the video output doesn’t always work as advertised, in this case failing to output to dual 1080p monitors from one of our test laptops. Overall, the DS1000 is a solid dock for someone who needs one 4K display, but less than ideal for those who need multiple monitors and use lots of accessories.

Gole1 Tablet Review

A truly unique gadget, the Gole1 is difficult to classify. The device’s 5-inch touch screen, built-in battery and lightweight, 4-ounce chassis suggest that the Gole1 is a tablet. However, its relatively chunky, 0.78-inch thick frame and nine ports make it look and feel more like a mini desktop PC. The fanless, 9-ounce computer also comes with ability to dual-boot Windows 10 and Android 5.1, a capability we’ve never seen before.

The small Chinese company that makes this device refers to it as the “world’s smallest all-in-one.” But no matter what you call it, the $99 Gole1 ($129 as tested) is an incredible bargain that works best as a portable server, home theater PC or mobile mini desktop.

Hands on: AOC U2879VF review

Medium-sized 4K monitors are finally becoming a bit more affordable, dipping below £300 (around $400, AU$520), a price point that makes them competitive, between 25-inches and 30-inches, with ultra-wide 21:9 monitors.

The AOC U2879VF is the UK’s cheapest 4K 28-inch monitor at the time of writing with a price of less than £270 (around $360, AU$470) at online retailers Box andCCL.

At that price and given our past experience with first-generation 4K monitors of that size, we’d expect a few corners to be cut to bring the price down.

The only real let-down is the fact that AOC opted for a TN panel rather than an IPS one, but that’s understandable given the target price.

Ulysse Nardin FreakWing Artemis Racing Limited Edition Watch Hands-On

At Baselworld 2016, Ulysse Nardin predictably introduced a couple of new limited edition Freak watches. This one is perhaps one of our favorite Freak watches of all time, and it is the 35-piece set Ulysse Nardin FreakWing Artemis Racing Limited Edition in cool black and yellow “bumblebee” tones. Not personally being too connected to the world of boat racing, the Artemis Racing team collaboration is fun, but it isn’t what seals the deal for me.

Ulysse Nardin FreakWing Artemis Racing Limited Edition Watch Hands-On Hands-On

The watch is called the “FreakWing” because of the design of the movement/minute hand that is inspired by the “wing” mainsail of racing yachts. It is a subtle but nice addition to the overall design. The 45mm-wide case is produced in black DLC-coated titanium, with a black carbon fiber bezel. The textured leather strap’s surface pattern fits in nicely with both the carbon fiber bezel as well as the motif on the inner dial.

Sony Xperia XR vs Xperia Z5: What’s the rumoured difference?

Sony is one of the only manufacturers left to announce a new flagship in 2016 and it looks like the beginning of September might be when we will see it appear.

The name is a little up in the air at the moment though, after the company scrapped the “Z” series at Mobile World Congress and marked the “X” series as its future. There have been a couple of names rumoured, but we are going with the Xperia XR for the sake of this feature.

We’ve compared the rumoured specs of the Xperia XR, also called Xperia F8331, to the Xperia Z5 to see what the differences are, based on current speculation.

Samsung UE65KS9000 review

The TV world is so littered with acronyms (4K, HDR, 3D, LCD, LED) even today’s most slang-savvy teen would struggle to understand them all.

When it comes to Samsung and LG, it’s tempting to break down their rivalry into two of them: SUHD vs OLED, respectively.

SUHD

However, unlike OLED, SUHD isn’t a panel technology. Rather, it’s a term Samsung has coined – from the industry-wide abbreviation, UHD – for the technology it uses in its flagship sets.

It’s based on an LCD panel display that uses Quantum Dot technology – nano-sized particles that produce different colours depending on their size. Samsung claims it offers 64 times the colour expression of standard TVs.

Also falling under the SUHD umbrella is HDR1000, meaning the TVs can reach a brightness of 1000 nits, in line with the UHD Alliance’s Ultra HD Premium specification – which also includes a 4K resolution, less than 0.05 nits black level, and 10-bit colour depth – which the SUHD models adhere to, including this 65in UE65KS9000.

Burmester Surround Sound Sound System (Mercedes-Benz C-Class) review

We’ve been out and about in the new Mercedes C-Class, taking in the sights and sounds of its optional Burmester sound system.

Would you rather have enough money to buy a house, a sports car, or a speed boat? A difficult dilemma, we know. For the price of a Burmester separates system you could probably afford one of the above, if not all three.

When you consider the company’s flagship standalone CD player, the Burmester 069, costs a wallet-withering £35,840/$53,760, by the time you’ve added a matching pre/power amp and a suitable pair of speakers, you won’t get much change from £130,000/$195,000. And that’s before you add cables!

Dynaudio Emit M20 review

If you read July’s What Hi-Fi?, you’ll have seen that the Dynaudio M10 bookshelves (£500/$750) made a huge impression, knocking the B&W 685 S2s, two-time Product of the Year winners, off their pedestal. That takes some doing.

Now it’s the turn of the Emit M20s – larger versions of their impressive siblings – to try and make their mark.

Place them side-by-side and the M10s and M20s are akin to one of those Russian dolls, same dimensions but made to a different scale.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Tourbillon Paillonnée Watch Hands-On

One of the newest Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Tourbillon watches from the boutique Swiss watch maker (that is probably the smallest and most unique high-end brand under the Swatch Group umbrella) is this eight-piece limited edition reference J013033242 Grande Seconde Tourbillon Paillonnée you see here. I last covered another version of the Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Tourbillon watch here in 2015. Galaxy S7 Edge vs. LG G5 vs. HTC 10: Which Android has the best camera?

When a smartphone is deemed a flagship, it’s expected to have one of the best cameras on the market. In the growing jungle of Android handsets, camera performance is one of the key ways to distinguish who’s got the goods and who doesn’t. The Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, LG G5, and HTC 10 are all flagships for their respective brands, and each company has taken the camera very seriously, looking to improve it in every possible way. That said, we took all three smartphones on various photography outings to gauge their performance and see who ultimately wins this shootout.

Janis Trading NTH Sub Watch Review

NTH? Janis Trading? Who, or what, is that? If you were not aware, Janis Trading is actually a brand you are probably already familiar with – they were formerly known as as Lew & Huey. Now, that is a name that should be familiar to most of you (and if it isn’t, check out our interview with brand creator Chris Vail). As part of the rebranding, the Janis Trading NTH Subs are a completely new line that will hit the streets soon, and we recently got to spend some quality time with a pair from the new lineup, which we first brought you word of back in the spring.

Janis Trading NTH Sub Watch Review Wrist Time Reviews

Now, anyone taking a look at the NTH Sub lineup is instantly going to see the obvious cues to watches of the past. What you might not be as aware of is that these are not simply taking inspiration from the Rolex watches of the past. Instead, these draw from the original military specs that brought us watches like the Rolex Submariner, and the Omega models that preceded the crowned brand in the military contracts. In other words, these are a mix of different styles, bringing things together in different ways. And, of course, Vail being Vail, he had to tweak the designs a bit, all while bringing the high-quality materials to the table at his affordable price points.

Huawei P9 Plus review: The big and the bold

Huawei is fast emerging as one of the most popular smartphone brands in the world. A lot of that notability is thanks to its budget sub-brand, Honor, which cranks out affordable but high quality phones. Still, Huawei has done a lot of work on its own-brand phones too, with the P9 and P9 Plus arguably being its finest creations yet.

We’ve already reviewed the regular P9, but now it’s time to turn our attention to its big brother: the 5.5-inch P9 Plus. Don’t let appearances fool you though. It’s not just a slightly bigger version of the P9, it also has some extra features that help justify the climb in price. Is it the one to go for?

It’s probably no surprise to discover that the P9 Plus looks and feels like a bigger version of the Huawei P9. The metal frame is thin, with a brushed pattern which is coated with some kind of lacquer, giving the phone a slippery and glossy texture, rather than a soft-touch metal finish.

Volkswagen Touran review: Peak practicality

The world might have gone SUV and crossover mad, but if you’ve a brood of three (or more) to cart around then a mid-sized crossover like the Nissan Qashqai doesn’t actually cut it. That’s why – despite their perceived lack of sexiness – MPVs like the Volkswagen Touran continue to prevail.

If you need five or seven seats, want more than two isofix child seat fixing points and, frankly, aren’t looking to spend oodles of cash on a car, then a mid-sized MPV such as this really is your best bet when buying new.

Handy, then, that Volkswagen has just refreshed the Touran as part of its on-going range renewal. Based on the underpinning of a Golf (the MQB platform), the Touran comes with seven seats as standard and starts from £22,270/$33,405 in the UK. Is this the family “Wagen” to go for?

2017 Kawasaki KX250F – FIRST RIDE REVIEW

After introducing an all-new KX450F last year, Kawasaki left its smaller brother, the 2016 KX250F, relatively untouched aside from a few minor improvements. For 2017, the KX250F has received a full makeover, with a new chassis, improved suspension settings, increased power delivery, and comfortable ergonomics.

Kawasaki KX250F full flight off a jump

Last year’s KX-F wasn’t a bad bike, but it did have its shortcomings, namely in the handling and weight departments. When we pulled this bike off the stand, however, we could already tell it was a different machine than its predecessor.

On the track, the chassis—1.3 inches slimmer than ’16—gives the rider a more connected feel to the bike, while the overall lighter weight makes it easier to plant the bike wherever you want. Complementing the chassis are revised suspension and linkage settings. And while the settings worked well, removing preload and adding compression in the fork helped the bike remain planted in corners without sacrificing straight-line stability.

SONY SRS-HG1 REVIEW : H.EAR GO WIRELESS SPEAKER

Sony has had a good history of producing great wireless speakers. With my previous reviews of the Sony SRS-X3, SRS-X33, SRS-X55 portable speakers, the Sony h.ear go SRS-HG1 somewhat falls flat, literally, in the audio quality.

Sony h.ear go SRS-HG1 unboxing

When playing music using flat setting, the treble is veiled, bass is weak, the audio is contained within the speaker. Despite being marketed as the smallest high-res audio portable wireless speaker, it doesn’t sound at all clear to impress. Even the ClearAudio+ fails to bring sparkle.

Can the Pavlok shock wearable make pain motivation work?

I have a lot of bad habits, but one of the most outwardly obvious is that I bite my nails. A lot. I bit them so much I once got an infection in my thumb. Gross, right? An ex told me my nail-biting made him anxious – although it’s doubtful that was the reason it didn’t work out – and people in meetings have asked if I’m okay because I’m frantically chewing at my own hand.

So when I was asked to test Pavlok, the controversial wearable that delivers an electric shock to your wrist ranging from 50 to 500 volts, I saw it as the perfect – albeit extreme – opportunity to stop my nail-biting compulsions for good. But just how well would the wearable work and would I actually stop my bad habit?

When Chinese tech giant ZTE started selling phones in the United States, it pounced on a niche market and stuck stubbornly to it: obscenely cheap phones running Google’s Android operating system. Its first strong budget phone, the ZMax, debuted for $200; and its successor, the ZMax 2, hit the street for $50 less ($150). That strategy proved to be a good one: Last year, ZTE sold more than 15 million handsets. Now it’s back with the $100 ZMax Pro.Android operating system. But while a low sticker price may once have constituted a selling point, that couldn’t be further from the truth today. So-called budget phones like Motorola’s G4 and G4 Plus, as well as Huawei’s Honor 5X have raised the bar with superb specifications, excellent ergonomics, and great user experiences.

Xbox One S vs PlayStation Neo (PS4K): What’s the rumoured difference?

xbox-one-s-review-50-800x533-c

One thing we know for sure about the PlayStation Neo is that it will be capable of 4K gaming. PlayStation boss Andrew House effectively said as much to the Financial Times on the eve of E3. That means it will have enough graphics and processing grunt to render games in 2160p, quite possibly at 60 frames per second too.

The Xbox One S on the other hand is not capable of 4K gaming. It does upscale all video output to 4K, including games, but you don’t get anymore detail – it just takes on the upscaling duties rather than rely on your TV’s abilities.

The Microsoft machine does offer HDR (high dynamic range) gaming though. Developers can now choose to offer a great level of contrast and depth in their games, for users with TVs capable of showing them. Forza Horizon 3 a Gears of War 4 are two games coming with HDR graphics.

Q Acoustics M7 review

You don’t always need large dimensions to be powerful and a first listen to the Q Acoustics M7 is certainly proof of that.

A 2.1 sub-sat package, the M7 incorporates two satellite speakers and the sub from the Q7000i 5.1 package, which we described as a ‘substantial leap forward in music and movie sound quality’, and pairs them with the new Q-AVA compact stereo amp.

It’s an interesting setup that angles itself at both a TV audience, and one looking for a powerful stereo setup without the bulk.

Build

The small satellites remain unchanged from what we’ve seen before, each pill-shaped unit standing just 24cm tall and packing two 75mm long-throw mid/bass drivers and a 25mm tweeter.

The speaker terminals are hidden in the base, which also swivels around to allow you to wall mount them should you wish (though this is more likely to be of use in a 5.1 setup).
