Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Express Dock Review: MacBook Pro ports, at a price

belkin-thunderbolt-3-express-dock-review-7-980x420

Thunderbolt 3 may be the wunderport of the future, but sometimes it feels like nobody told the peripheral-makers that. While notebooks like the most recent MacBook Pro may have switched entirely to Thunderbolt 3 and the USB Type-C connector, actually finding things to plug into them can be hard going. Enter Belkin’s Thunderbolt 3 Express Dock, one of the first to market to take advantage of the connection’s 40 Gbps throughput and power/display/data flexibility.

What’s great

The Express Dock itself is clean and minimalist, and a good match to most Apple hardware. The curved metal casing tapers from back to front, with plastic end-caps. Most of the ports are on the back, which is also where the power supply plugs in. The brick for that is almost as large as the Express Dock itself.

Master & Dynamic MA770 hands on

When we reported on Master & Dynamic’s entry into the world of ultra-premium wireless speakers back in April, we were intrigued most of all by the MA770’s provenance and by the materials it utilises. After all, not every company devises its own concrete hybrid material or partners with recently knighted architects to deliver such a bold visual statement.

Design and build

So yes, the MA770 is made entirely of a concrete composite developed by Master & Dynamic. Because of its sculptural angles and curves, each speaker is cast in a ‘soft’ mould that lasts for only four or five pours before it needs to be replaced.

Beyerdynamic Byron BTA review

“Mad, bad, and dangerous to know” was how Lady Caroline Lamb described the great Romantic poet, Lord Byron.

However the wireless headphones that share his name, Beyerdynamic’s Byron BTA (the premium version of the Byron BTs) are almost the exact opposite. They’re a safe choice for a solid sound.

Build and comfort

Another difference is that while the poet was a classicist, these headphones are distinctly modern. Much like its wired equivalent, the Byron BTAs’ black-and-metal housings look sleek and cutting edge.

Each housing has its own magnet on the back, and when they’re brought together the magnetic force snaps them together; they might look like a necklace, but it keeps the headphones tidy when you’re not using them and stops them from falling off if you’re running.

2017 Toyota Kluger GX FWD v Mazda CX-9 Sport FWD

Fuji 50mm f/2 vs. 56mm f/1.2

I decided to do a quick test of the new 50mm f/2 compared to the excellent 56mm f/1.2.  The new 50mm f/2 is a compact, weather-resistant prime lens, while the older 56mm f/1.2 fills the class 85mm portrait focal length with an ultra-fast f/1.2 aperture.  Obviously, the 56mm f/1.2 will provide over one stop of additional light, but in other imaging characteristics, how do they stack up?  Let’s take a look.

The Fujinon XF 50mm f/2 WR and the XF 56mm f/1.2

The Fujinon XF 50mm f/2 WR and the XF 56mm f/1.2

The Lenses

As you can see from above, while similar in length, the two lenses are quite a bit different in width, as well as weight. The 56mm f/1.2 is one of the legendary lenses in the Fuji X lineup. It’s one of my personal favorite lenses of all time, and I love shooting with it.  It’s not a perfect lens by any means, but its combination of character, sharpness and great drawing style make for a very compelling optic.

Fitbit v Xiaomi: How do the fitness platforms stack up?

We compare the two most popular fitness tracking options

When it comes to fitness trackers, no-one sells more than Fitbit and Xiaomi. In the first three months of 2017, Xiaomi sold 3.6 million trackers and Fitbit sold 3 million devices. So a lot of people are choosing Fitbit, Xiaomi – or the fitness capabilities of the Apple Watch, of course – around the world.

Fitbit v Xiaomi: Which will get you fit?

For most people, the obvious difference in price will clinch it, and we’ll look at that below. But what are the other considerations if you’re deciding between locking yourself into Fitbit or Xiaomi? 2017 Mercedes-AMG C63 Estate By Wimmer RS Review

You’re not alone if you think estate sedans are a bit bland. It’s a perception that this type of car has hard a difficult time shaking off. Bless the gods, then, that there’s a model like the Mercedes-AMG C63 S Estate that’s able to shatter this preconceived notion, thanks in large part to having loads of power and for being, well, a Mercedes. It certainly helps its cause, too, that aftermarket tuners seem to have a proper appreciation for its potential, and we see that on full display with this new program presented by Wimmer RS for the AMG C63 S Estate.

At this point, we all know what Wimmer RS is capable of when you give it a chance to work on a Mercedes, let alone one that’s carrying an AMG badge. It’s done work on the AMG C63 Sedan and even has a long history with the wagon version. Today, the German tuner writes a new chapter in its quest to show the world what a fully loaded AMG C63 S Estate is capable of. The focal point of this tuning kit is the engine upgrade program, which puts in a good dose of extra power to a wagon that already boasts a potent amount. Think 510 horsepower is enough for this car? Simmer doesn’t think so, which is why it’s offering a program that uncorks 801 ponies out of the car’s bi-turbo V-8 engine.

iOS 11 vs. macOS: Apple Has Already Chosen the Winner

What will the productivity computers of the future look like? Assuming that we’re all not going to be working on spreadsheets on our smartphones in 10 years, it’s a real question, and it’s one that Microsoft and Apple are approaching in strikingly different ways. Last week at its Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple gave us a clearer indication about which way it’s heading — and the choice is a bit of a gamble.

ipad_ios_11_lead

The success of the iPhone means that Apple’s most successful operating system is also its most modern. With the introduction of upgraded iPad Pro models and the unveiling of iPad productivity features in iOS 11, Apple appears to be going all-in on the iPad as its vision of the productivity machine of the future. (And one could argue that the iPad has had its greatest success in Fortune 500 companies.)

Yamaha RX-V483 review

Seemingly since the dawn of AV receivers, two brands have stood out from the others in customer’s minds: Denon and Yamaha. Both have enviable reputations for great sound, and are consistently able to offer the newest, “must-have” features.

yahmaha-reciever

The Yamaha RX-V483 is a fine example of the manufacturer’s art, boasting a useful amount of options in addition to excellent sound quality. It offers a decent amount of future-proofing with support for 4K HDR video and multiroom music.

On the other hand, it doesn’t really improve much on last year’s model, while its competitor, the Denon AVR-S730H has made some important gains — namely Dolby Atmos support. However, Atmos is hardly a must-have in our book. It requires extra “height” speakers and, more importantly, isn’t nearly as common as Dolby’s other formats on today’s movies and TV shows.

It can also log other important data, such as engine rpm, throttle position, engine coolant temperature and more. 2017 Abarth 695 Rivale Review

The Abarth 500 has been on the receiving end of some interesting special edition models in the past. We’ve seen the Abarth 695 Biposto Record, the 595 Yamaha Factory Racing Edition, and the 500 Track Experience, among others. None of them, though, can lay claim to the title of being the “most sophisticated Abarth ever.” That distinction, according to Abarth itself, now rests on the shoulders of the 695 Rivale Special Edition.

Developed specifically to celebrate the company’s close ties to yacht maker Riva, the 695 Rivale is the physical embodiment of the premium luxury that goes into the craft of building those sea vessels. Safe to say, that “most sophisticated Abarth ever” title fits the 695 Rivale. It’s inundated with aesthetic features that shine a big spotlight on the nautical theme of the compact car. Inside and out, the 695 Rivale is decked to the brim with luxury, the kind you expect from any one of the yachts that Riva has built in its 175-year history.

Panasonic TX-55EZ952B review

Everything about the EZ952 is serious, from the straight-laced design to the vast menus, which contain more picture-tweaking options than there are wines at Claridges.

This is the most affordable member of Panasonic’s new OLED family, and is clearly intended for the more dedicated enthusiast, or as Panasonic says in its own literature, ‘pro’.

That doesn’t necessarily make it a bad choice for the more casual buyer, as long as you don’t mind a complicated first-time calibration.

Picture

But there is one area in which the EZ952 is a long way behind its rivals: HDR.

The Panasonic supports HDR in both the HDR10 and HLG formats, so we gravitate towards that first. At the time of testing, the Amazon Instant Video app wasn’t available, but it will be by the time the TV goes on sale in July. Thankfully, Netflix is onboard to display all of its high dynamic range glory.

Elyxr Air review

Less visible tech about your person once meant a less geeky look. But the opposite is true of the wire-free Apple AirPods – wear these and you instantly mark yourself as a certain type of techy person – and not the type everyone wants to be.

The Elyxr Airs are the same kind of zero-wire earphones as the AirPods, but they are far more discrete. And they’re cheaper, too.

Build and comfort

Rather than dropping little plastic stems out of your ears like the world’s tiniest Bluetooth earpiece, the Elyxr Air look just like normal IEM earphones with their cables snipped off.

Virtually no extra bulk is needed for the wireless electronics and battery, which is pretty impressive.

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM Review

Canon Ef 70 300mm Is II Usm Front Oblique View

Here we have Canon’s new, updated version of their moderately priced 70-300mm full frame lens. It offers improved AF, improved optical quality and a new electronic display. We coupled this to the Canon EOS 5DS Rbody, so let’s see how the lens performs and handles.

Handling and Features

70-300mm is a very useful telephoto range, versatile, fairly compact and offering an excellent balance between performance and cost. The step up to 400mm would add a fair amount of cost as well as increasing the size of a lens significantly. The Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM lens is not the smallest such optic, but balances well on the Canon EOS 5DS R camera body and weighs in at a reasonable 710g.

iPad Pro vs. MacBook: Which Should You Buy?

“Should I get an iPad Pro or a MacBook?” For Apple fans, this has been a tough decision ever since the original iPad Pro was announced. The new iPad Pro and a series of MacBook updates make this sticky decision even more difficult, especially with the powerful iOS 11 on the way

lead_V2_image_ipad_notebook

The new iPad Pro models get a boost in size and processing power, with a 10.5-inch tablet replacing the 9.7-inch base model, and a step up to the new A10X Fusion chip. On the other hand, the MacBook line gets Intel’s latest, 7th Generation Kaby Lake processors and will receive a new operating system: macOS High Sierra. This OS brings expanded capability and performance to the laptops.

From portability to pricing, several key distinctions between the laptop and tablet will affect your ability to work on either device, but Apple has pushed hard to narrow the gaps between these very different devices.

Microsoft Surface Laptop review: Much more than an elite Chromebook competitor

Microsoft’s hardware division has gone from strength to strength over the last few years: from the Surface Pro, which has defined the high-end 2-in-1 space in its refined fifth-gen form; to the heavyweight Surface Book, which has enough grunt to keep MacBook Pro owners sheepishly quiet; to the Surface Studio and its command of the high-end creative space.

Its latest, the Surface Laptop, is supposedly pitched at the education sector. It’s also the device to champion the stripped back Windows 10 S operating system – which cannot install full executable files, only downloads from the Windows Store, almost like “Windows RT version 2” – positioning it almost as an elite Chromebook competitor. Its £979/$1468.5 starting price, however, puts it at odds with more affordable Chromebooks and might be a hard ask for cash-strapped students.

Lenovo Flex 11 Chromebook Review

Kids drop things all the time, and they don’t necessarily need a ton of performance from an education laptop. Built to withstand 2.4-foot drops and keyboard spills, Lenovo’s Flex 11 is a 2-in-1 Chromebook that’s strong and simple enough for the classroom. The $279 laptop is not powerful, but it’s more than adequate for elementary- or middle-school homework. Discerning students may take issue with the Flex 11’s shallow keyboard and below-average battery life, but its durability and low price make it an attractive option for parents and educators.

Design

The Flex 11 has a functional design. That’s my nice way of suggesting that it’s darn ugly, but it can take a punch.

The lid is gray plastic surrounded by a gray rubber bumper. Lenovo’s logo is written in (you guessed it) yet another shade of gray in the bottom right-hand corner. The only hint of color in the whole thing is the Chrome logo in the top left.

2017 HSV GTSR W1 Review

As we already know, 2017 marked the end of the line for General Motors’Australian factories, which means that the Holden brand as we know it no longer exists. The Australian-built Commodore was discontinued after 40 years of production and replaced by a sedan based on the latest Opel Insignia. But before the VF-generation Commodore went into the history books, the folks over at HSV, Holden’s high-performance division, launched one final special edition of the sedan. It’s called the HSV GTSR W1, and it’s the most extreme version of the Australian-made four-door.

Arguably the most interesting facts about the GTSR W1, besides the beefed-up exterior, can be found under the hood, where HSV dropped a supercharged, 6.2-liter V-8 LS9 that’s very similar to the one in the previous Corvette ZR1. But power and torque aren’t everything here. This sedan also features a wide range of track-prepped chassis components, as well as unique trim on the inside. What’s more, it’s limited to only a few hundred examples, which will definitely turn it into an expensive collectible in a few years. Let’s find out more about it below.

OnePlus 5 vs Apple iPhone 7 vs iPhone 7 Plus: What’s the rumoured difference?

OnePlus is set to unveil its new flagship, the OnePlus 5, on 20 June. The next flagship killer has some stiff competition on its hands this year, perhaps more so than ever, with Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and S8+ already out there, as well as LG’s G6 and Sony’s Xperia XZ Premium.

With plenty of rumours flying about, along with a few confirmed details from OnePlus itself, we have a pretty good idea as to what the next flagship killer has in store. We’ve put the OnePlus 5 up against Apple’s iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in this feature to see how they differ and what similarities they might offer, based on the speculation.

2017 CSC Motorcycles RX3 Review

The CSC Motorcycles, importer of Chinese-made scooters and motorcycles, expands its footprint in the U.S. market with the addition of the RX3 Adventure. This mini-adventure brings genre-typical features to the table with a 250 cc engine that has almost 25-horsepower on tap to push its touring and light-terrain equipment up to 84 mph. While the stock ride comes with everything you need for the above activities, the factory makes sure you have upgrades available in its accessories catalog to further increase its capacity for adventure.

This really speaks to the overall quality of the products coming out of Zongshen.

iPad Pro (10.5-inch, 2017) review

Apple’s iPad has had eyes on eventually becoming the future of computing for years now, and it’s been getting there in gradual steps. The 2015-2016 iPad Pro tablets made strides with a great Pencil stylus and seriously fast processing. From a hardware perspective, the 2016 9.7-inch iPad Pro was a nearly perfect package.

This year, the tablets are back, offering hardware revamps in two different screen sizes: 12.9-inch, and a slightly-larger-than-before 10.5-inch. Both seem ready to take advantage of iOS 11, which offers a slew of new split-screen, app-managing and file-management tools that could make them feel more computerlike — in a good way — than ever before.

There’s only one problem. iOS 11 comes out this fall, and the tablets are here now.
