Surface Pro 4 hands-on: bigger, yet smaller

Today the Surface Pro 4 has been revealed by Microsoft: a device with a larger display than the Surface 3, a thinner body, and a more powerful processor. This device appears not long after companies like Google and Apple have revealed their own “tablets with keyboards” devices that bear more than a passing resemblance to Microsoft’s Surface lineup. As such, Microsoft is presenting this Surface Pro 4 as a sort of bumping up of the category they suggest they’ve created. This Surface Pro 4 is heavier than its predecessors, yet thinner than its predecessors. While its display is smaller than the Surface Book, it’s larger than previous generations as well.

NVIDIA’s patent case against Samsung and Qualcomm stumbles

NVIDIA’s hopes to tie up Samsung and Qualcomm in an expensive sales ban over mobile graphics chips has hit a roadblock. The company had sought an injunction from the United States International Trade Commission, alleging that rival chipmakers were infringing on its graphics patents with silicon found inside – among others – the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy S5.

However, in a ruling issued on Friday last week, ITC judge Thomas B. Pender decided that neither Samsung nor Qualcomm had, in fact, infringed on anything that NVIDIA had patented.

10 Safest SUVs of 2015

1. HONDA CR-V

The Honda CR-V scored “good” in all areas, and a “superior” in the front crash prevention test, according to the IIHS. The optional collision mitigation brake system reduced impact speed by 21 mph in the 25 mph test, and completely avoided a collision in the 12 mph test.

The child seat LATCH system was given a “marginal” rating. This score was given due to the lower anchors being too deep in the seat, the anchor being too hard to find in location 2, and other hardware being confused for the anchor.

Microsoft Band vs Band 2 comparison: What’s the difference between the old and new Microsoft Bands?

Microsoft has unveiled a new fitness tracker / smartwatch called the Band 2. You can pre-order one straight away, and it costs the same as the old model: £199.99. That’s the same as aFitbit Surge: expensive for an activity tracker, but not for a smartwatch. Here we compare the old and new models in our Microsoft Band vs Band 2 comparison.

DESIGN

The biggest changes are in the Band 2’s design. While the old one was rigid, bulky and pretty uncomfortable, the new one has a curved screen and a flexible band. It should be more comfortable, but there’s still the issue of the landscape interface with no portrait option. Wearing the display on the inside of your wrist could be a solution, but could also play havoc with the heart-rate sensor.

How to stop automatic updates in Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Professional: Prevent forced updates installing on your PC

Microsoft has made automatic updates in Windows 10 Home compulsory, and to a lesser extent in Windows 10 Professional. There are good reasons for this, the foremost of which is security, but if you don’t want your system to be constantly downloading patches and possibly breaking apps or cuasing other problems, then there are a few options available. We’ll guide you through the workarounds that exist and how you can implement them. It should be noted though, that due to the security fixes that come with the updates, we would advise leaving the automated service on if you want your system to remain safe.

Facebook Messenger now available for Apple Watch

We’ve known that Facebook Messenger was inbound for the Apple Watch; we saw it previewed at Apple’s event last month, in fact. Now the time has come, and the social network’s chatting app has officially arrived on Apple’s wearable. The support comes via an update that Facebook released today; the app, which now sits at version 38, is available now in the iTunes store.

As promised, Facebook Messenger on Apple Watch allows one to receive and send voice clips from the wearable. More conventionally, it also supports text-based messaging, stickers, and “liking” things. The app update says there’s even “more” features, though it doesn’t go through the full list of functions.

DJI Osmo handheld stabilized 4K camera unveiled

DJI has introduced a new handheld stabilized camera — or, perhaps more accurately put, a handheld stabilizer that has a camera built into it. The stabilization comes by way of a three axis gimbal, which keeps the video from being shaky, one of the biggest problems caused by handheld cameras. The device has some extra features on top of that, namely a modular format that allows Osmo to work with some of DJI’s other products.

Apple responds to iPhone 6s A9 chip supply controversy

This afternoon Apple responded to concern that the A9 chip in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus were different, and that therefor the experience might be better on one or the other. Apple suggests that every chip they ship “meets Apple’s highest standards for providing incredible performance and deliver great battery life, regardless of iPhone 6s capacity, color, or model.” In short – despite the differences between the two chips, both called A9, Apple is comfortable with the decisions they’ve made.

Toyota unveils three concept cars including odd S-FR

Toyota is teasing a trio of new concept cars ahead of their official debut at the Tokyo motor show. All three of the cars are Toyota’s vision of the future of mobility and include the FCV Plus, KIKAI, and the S-FR. The latter is the yellow car in the image that looks like a cross between a Ford with the giant front grille and a BMW M coupe.

The S-FR is a “fun to drive, lightweight sports car” that is aimed at entry level buyers. It sounds like it might be aiming at a price point below the FR-S in the Scion fleet, assuming it ever makes it to production. It has a front midship engine location, six speed manual, and what Toyota calls optimal weight distribution.
