MX Master review : Logitech’s mouse is smooth, sturdy, and versatile

The Master MX mouse feels good in the hand and has plenty of buttons to customize. Its battery raises some concerns, though.

My favorite mouse is Logitech’s Performance Mouse MX ($100 MSRP; $59 on Amazon). I’ve been using it for years, and it’s still going strong. Logitech has another mouse that just as good: the MX Master ($100 MSRP; $70 on Amazon). The MX Master is a lot like the Performance Mouse MX, but it has features that make it stand out.

AVADirect Avant (2016) Review

avadirect avant review pc

Mention the idea of a gaming PC, and most consumers imagine monstrous rigs, with crazy, jagged lines, bright lights, and noisy, lumbering hardware. While that’s certainly the case for some systems, it couldn’t be further from the truth, as most gaming systems are unassuming, and more often than not, aren’t distinguishable from any other PC.

So it is with AVADirect’s Avant tower. This rig is custom-built, but not custom-designed, as it consists entirely of off-the-shelf components any enthusiast can buy. Our review system was powered by an overclocked Intel Core i7-6700K, 16GB of RAM, and a GTX 980 Ti, with a 500GB Samsung SSD and 2TB mechanical drive for storage.

That configuration rang up to a total of $2,270, which includes bells and whistles like sleeved power cables, multi-color LEDs, a high-end Corsair liquid CPU cooler, and overclocking. Clearly, AVADirect is targeting gamers looking for the best hardware value, but does it makes sense to buy a system you could easily build yourself?

Panasonic DMR-PWT550EB PVR/Blu-ray Player Combi Review

What is the Panasonic PWT550?

The Panasonic DMR-PWT550 is another in the long line of multi-purpose devices from the Japanese manufacturer. It features playback for DVD and Blu-ray discs, recording for Freeview broadcasts and a range of apps, notably streaming services from Netflix and Amazon and access to most of the major UK catch-up services – iPlayer and the like – via Freeview Play. That’s not to mention network and local media playback, 4K Ultra HD scaling and Panasonic’s own TV Anywhere service. All this, and more besides, can be had for just under £280/$420 (July 2016), online, which might be something of a difficult price-point to justify given the slightly higher specified, but retailer exclusive,PWT655EB is available for, more or less, the same money.

The Archives : Buell 1125R vs. Ducati 848 – COMPARISON TEST

If there’s a common thread that ties the Buell 1125R and Ducati 848 together, it’s that they both thumb their noses at established engine displacement classes. Ducati and Buell have each scaled its latest sportbike model with the interests of the road rider in mind, racing rules be damned. While 276cc and $1000 in price separate this pair of sporting Twins, we felt they represent a comparable matchup in terms of outright performance.

Ducati 848 and Buell 1125R on-road action

Ducati 848 and Buell 1125R.

The Ducati 848 is in essence a 1098 Lite, sharing many parts with its larger sibling, winner of just about every moto-magazine accolade last year. Powered by an 849cc version of the Testastretta Evoluzione engine with a shortened stroke and smaller bore, the super-size middleweight 848 finds its place in Ducati’s 2008 lineup as a less-demanding-to-ride and more-affordable option to the 1098.

TomTom Golfer 2 review

While we still look at the TomTom Golfer 2 affectionately thanks to the great app and the top hazard data, shocking experience with the automatic shot detection ruins the round. By adding such a large amount of junk data into the mix is a backward step for TomTom, and hands Garmin the advantage with its strong Approach S20 and X40 devices. Even if you turn off automatic shot detection, what you’re left with is an expensive golf watch that only does the basics, which makes the Golfer 2 very hard to recommend.

The original TomTom Golfer was one of Wareable’s favourite golf watches, thanks to its super accurate distances, wealth of lay-up information and decent value.

Now the company is back with the TomTom Golfer 2, and things have got serious. In addition to GPS data, the Golfer introduces automatic shot detection and scoring.

It’s a departure from the no-nonsense attitude of the previous Golfer watch and comes with a newly renewed version of the TomTom MySports app, which is now better designed for golf.

But can TomTom register back-to-back birdies? We took to the course to find out what it was made of.

Acer TravelMate P648 Review

Work doesn’t end just because you’re in the sky or on the road, so a business laptop needs to be able to keep up with your travels. Acer’s $1,164 ($957 to start) is built solidly and performs well, but it has a shallow keyboard and a somewhat dim screen. While you do get a discrete graphics card (which you don’t usually get in a business notebook in this price range), Thunderbolt 3 and support for the new 802.11ad Wi-Fi standard, the other weaknesses are hard to ignore.

Design

The TravelMate’s design isn’t exactly adventurous; it’s a minimalist motif that you see on just about every business notebook. The glass-and-carbon-fiber lid is plain and black, with the exception of a silver Acer badge on the top-right corner and the words “Carbon Fiber Chassis” printed in gray on the top-left corner. The computer is built solidly and feels like it could take a fall.

Canon PowerShot SX720 HS Digital Camera Review

Canon’s latest 40x travel camera is long on zoom, but short on value

For many camera buyers, a travel zoom seems like the perfect camera, with lots of optical zoom, compact bodies, and reasonable prices… but as the old saying goes: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Unfortunately, we may have reached that point with the new Canon PowerShot SX720 HS(MSRP $379.99).

This is because while the amount of optical zoom in cameras has steadily grown every year—from 12x to 20x to 30x with last year’s Canon PowerShot SX710 HS–the newest model’s 40x zoom lens is simply too much. While it can produce images that look just fine on Facebook or your phone, on close inspection the shots just don’t look great.

For most point-and-shoots, this isn’t a huge deal. But for a near-$400 camera in 2016? It just doesn’t do enough to justify the expense, especially when last year’s perfectly good model is still available at a steep discount.

Simaudio Moon Neo ACE All-in-One Music Player Review

What is the Simaudio Moon Neo ACE?

The Moon NEO Ace is Simaudio’s first attempt at an all in one streaming system and one that ticks almost every spec box that you might reasonably expect a product of this nature to feature. The market for high quality all-in-one systems has expanded dramtically over the last 5-6 years and some companies have proved to be extremely adept at creating them.

Simaudio manages to be both an obvious and peculiar choice for a company to make such a thing. On the one hand, they are adept at software and make all the components and sources that might be expected to fit into such a system. On the other, they have a fairly consistent history of building components that perform one- possibly two- functions as well as can be expected and not cramming functionality in for the sake of it.

Richard Mille RM 51-02 Tourbillon Diamond Twister $900,000+ Watch For Women Hands-On

There are dozens of ways to segment the tastes of watch lovers, and one is to draw a line between people who appreciate timepieces with the addition of precious stones such as diamonds and those who simply do not. There is no right or wrong answer to the question of whether or not a watch decorated with diamonds is better as a result. It is a matter of taste, budget, and perhaps most importantly (well, budget is probably the most important to many people) whether or not you feel a timepiece can exist as a functional jewelry item or if it should primarily be something functional.

I say all that because depending on your personal tastes and feelings on the matter of horology, a watch like this Richard Mille RM 51-02 Tourbillon Diamond Twister is either amazing or represents all that is wrong in the world of watches. It is also a women’s watch, but as it is a Richard Mille, you get an equal focus on the jewelry dimension as on the high-tech watchmaking dimension. So are you ready for a Tourbillon Diamond Twister? That sounds like a very expensive force of nature or a thrilling ride at a water park – “it’s so thrilling, they found two ways to say whirlwind in the name!”

2017 Fiat 124 Spider Review: Italy gives Miata an attitude adjustment

Somebody screwed up. That, at least, was my first thought upon slipping into the compact cabin of the 2017 Fiat 124 Spider and finding, not a sweet little six-speed shifter, but an automatic. Somebody, when filling in the order form, foolishly and unforgivably ticked the $1,350 six-speed auto transmission option

I’m no kneejerk auto gearbox hater, but the 124 Spider is – like the Mazda MX-5 Miata it shares a chassis, suspension, and production line with, among other things – a car you’re meant to row yourself.

2017-fiat-124-spider-review-12

Back up a little. The 124 was never originally intended to be a Fiat, with parent company FCA initially intending its deal with Mazda to spawn a small, relatively affordable Alfa Romeo to slot in under the excellent but expensive 4C. Plans changed, though, and the Spider name was resurrected for this new droptop Fiat.

Plugable UD-CA1 USB-C Dock Review

For an accessory that you set and forget, docks can be expensive. All but one that we have reviewed so far have been over $150. Although Plugable’s UD-CA1 docking station is a slightly more affordable $130 and delivers power and outputs video over USB Type-C, it proves that being cheaper doesn’t necessarily mean a value buy. It only outputs to a single monitor, and Alt-mode technology, which lets you use a dock without a driver, still doesn’t work perfectly with all USB-C computers. The UD-CA1 ultimately ends up being a compromise between value and potential, as long as you have a computer that works with it.

Arnold & Son Time Pyramid Translucent Back Watch Hands-On

Would you like for me to remind you what the biggest issue is on watches with fully skeletonized dials and movements? It is that you can often see right through to your own skin and arm hair. Yes, those sexy-looking timepieces with skeletonized movements and dials can seem amazing in theory (and pictured alone), but place them on your wrist in a real world scenario and only those people with the most beautiful of wrists will have no reason to complain at all. This is actually a common “thing” which watch lovers can and do complain about.

So, to remedy this situation and respond to this concern, Arnold & Son has done a little experiment with this new version of their Time Pyramid watch in steel in the model reference 1TPAS.S01A.C124S “Translucent Back” version. This model will also outright replace the original version of the Arnold & Son Time Pyramid in steel with the traditionally transparent front and rear sapphire crystal.

Comparison Review: Sony FE 50mm F1.4 ZA vs 55mm F1.8 ZA

Sony has announced a high-end ‘normal’ prime for its Alpha E-mount line of cameras: the Planar T* 50mm F1.4 ZA lens. As the third normal prime for the system, we wanted to know what it offers over the already excellent FE 55mm F1.8 ZA, so we set about performing some benchmark tests.

We’ll take a look at sharpness on this page, and bokeh, coma, and longitudinal chromatic aberration on the next.

Sharpness

Below, you’ll see a series of aperture progressions for the 50mm F1.4 ZA and 55mm F1.8 ZA. Have a look around the scene at various apertures to get an idea of the capabilities of these two lenses – with the caveat that this performance is only representative of our single copy of each lens.

5 reasons why the new Samsung Gear VR (2016) is the best mobile headset by far

As well as triumphantly reveal what could be the best large-sized phone we’ve ever seen, Samsung also revealed a new Gear VR headset during its Unpacked events in New York, London and Rio.

It effectively replaces the current consumer model and has a few specific changes that make it an evolutionary step forward for mobile virtual reality. And, of course, it works with the new Samsung Galaxy Note 7.

VR is a big deal for Samsung and this represents a further commitment to the technology. The company also told us that it will continue to invest in the tech and we have little doubt that the Gear VR (2016) will be as popular as its predecessor.

Chopard Mille Miglia 2016 XL Race Edition Watch Review

Car racing and watches: such a seemingly ever-young combination, tirelessly perpetuated by the countless automotive-inspired watches released year over year. Despite the highly saturated segment, there actually are very few watches that can pull off this racing vibe and remain wearable for the times when, you know, you are not driving your Porsche 550 Spyder on the twisty roads along the Côte d’Azur. The Chopard Mille Miglia 2016 XL Race Edition (reference 168580-3001) promises to be one of these few, offering a mix of subtle Mille Miglia branding and not-so-subtle vintage racing-inspired design elements. Let’s see how it performs – not on the race track, but on the wrist.

Royal Enfield Himalayan – FIRST IMPRESSION REVIEW

Ewan McGregor ruined adventure motorcycles. His production the “Long Way Round,” is the “Eat, Pray, Love” for motorcycles, a perfect first-world-problem piece that shows the only way to experience borderless wanderlust is through hugely expansive and expensive endeavours through third-world countries. Fun? Yes. Achievable? Not for many.

Since that production, adventure bikes have exploded in both popularity and features, while people in cubicles the world over have fantasised about dropping it all, buying a GS, and heading into parts unknown. And adventure bikes have evolved to fit these increasing demands. Once simply armored-up road bikes, they now come saddled with the latest in riding tech, and horsepower numbers that would shame sportbikes of 15 years ago.

Hands on: DeWalt MD501 review

OUR EARLY VERDICT

The MD501 is, sadly, an overpriced rugged smartphone with underpowered hardware. The fact that it still runs Android Lollipop makes it even worse.

As the iPhone 7 looms, there seems to be a real fear that the global smartphone market has reached its peak when it comes to innovation and opportunities to sell.

Sure, every new generation is faster than the previous one, has more memory and a camera with more megapixels, but in the grander scheme of things, all that’s rather ‘meh’.

That doesn’t mean that consumers don’t want to buy a phone, it’s just that often they haven’t found one that is different enough for them to fork out their hard-earned cash.

Acer Predator Z1 Review : Behind the Curve?

The 27-inch Acer Predator Z1 occupies a curious middle ground in the world of gaming monitors. It’s curved, but compact. It has a high-end look and feel (and price), but it outputs at 1080p instead of 4K. The $599 Z1 has some neat lighting, makes most games look great and offers G-Sync for extra-smooth graphics. But considering you can get a 4K display for its price, you’ll have to seriously consider just how much a curved screen means to you.

Design

When I think of curved gaming monitors, I normally picture massive pieces of machinery that engulf my entire desk. That’s why I was so stunned by our 27-inch version of the Predator Z1, which makes a huge impression within a relatively compact frame.

Wacom Cintiq 27 QHD Touch Review

The Wacom Cintiq 27 QHD Touch is what I expected the high end of the digital illustration device world to be. It doesn’t feel as “magical” as the iPad Pro, but it’s a whole lot more powerful – and professional. It feels like a real professional piece of equipment, something that’s been perfected over several iterations – a tool that a top artist would buy again and again. While (as always) there are some changes I might make if I wanted the ideal touch- and pen-friendly display/tablet, at the moment, this is as good as it gets.

I originally requested to test the Wacom Cintiq 27 QHD because I wanted to compare it to one of the most well-known tablets for illustrators at the moment – the iPad Pro. I wanted to see how similar they were.

I really like the iPad Pro – it encourages me to be creative on the go. I use it when I go on long flights or long car trips (when I’m not driving, of course), and it allows me to do more than just sketch – I can make real works of design and art on it that can actually be used in print, on the web, and on clothing, if that’s what I’m aiming for.

Acer Predator 17 X Review

VR isn’t just for desktops anymore, and Acer’s Predator 17 X proves that true by sporting a full-fat Nvidia 980 desktop graphics card and a built-in overclocking tool for your gaming needs. Then, you toss in a row of customizable macro keys, fantastic heat management and a $2,800 price tag that’s hundreds less than many competing systems, and you get one of the most powerful laptops we’ve tested yet, and a pretty good value to boot. While this laptop isn’t exactly a treat to tote around and you’ll get barely more than 3 hours of juice when it’s unplugged, the Predator 17 X is definitely a force to be reckoned with.

Sony H.ear On Wireless NC review

I’ ve been a little underwhelmed by Sony’s wireless headphone offerings in the past, but the H.ear On Wireless NC headphone ($350; ‎£220; AU$500) may be its best Bluetooth headphone to date.

The headphone, which is also known as the MDR-1ABN, is very comfortable, although at 10.25 ounces or 290 grams it’s a little heavier than Bose’s QuietComfort 35 and isn’t quite as comfortable as that model. But at least it’s a close contest, and most people shouldn’t have a problem wearing this headphone for long stretches.

DSC_7803

The H.ear On Wireless NC folds up into an included carrying case. However, it doesn’t fold flat, so the case ends up being a little bulky and I didn’t find this to be the most comfortable headphone to walk around with wearing around your neck (I usually don’t comment on what a headphone feels like when it’s off your ears, but that perspective has become part of the headphone wearing experience as headphones have become fashion accessories).

Grado RS1e Headphone Review

Grado Labs is located in a nondescript four-story building in the Sunset Park neighborhood in Brooklyn, where Joe Grado started manufacturing phono cartridges in the early 1950s. John Grado (Joe’s nephew) took over day-to-day operations in 1978, and in 1989 Grado Labs jumped into the headphone market. John and Joe hand-built all of the company’s first-generation headphones—the HP-1, HP-2, and HP-3—and those ’phones now fetch anywhere from $1,000 to $2,500 on eBay! Grado Labs is still a family-owned business, and John’s son Jonathan came aboard in 2014.

The Grado Reference Series RS1e sports African mahogany earpieces, the headband is covered and padded with genuine leather, and there are newly designed 50mm drivers (the left- and right-channel drivers are matched within 0.5 decibels). There’s no automation or glistening robots cranking out these headphones; it’s all still done on a very human scale. Most of the workers were trained by John Grado, whose hands have crafted thousands of headphones.
