2018 Ducati Panigale V4 First Ride Review: 10 Things You Need To Know

Game-changing performance and technology

We just returned from the launch of Ducati’s all-new Panigale V4, and it’s no exaggeration to describe it as one of the best sportbikes ever made, perhaps even the best. Its new four-cylinder engine is melodious and powerful, it handles with agility akin to a much smaller bike, its electronics are leading-edge and fully customizable, and it looks sensational in person.

Ducati says the Panigale V4 is the biggest investment the company has ever made in a single product, four years in development, and that claim is perfectly believable after riding the bike at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Spain. Here, in bite-sized chunks, is why its technology and performance will take the superbike class by storm. Don’t be surprised if it takes top honors in sportbike shootouts around the world in 2018.

Best soundbars to improve your TV’s audio

TV speakers suck, but not everyone has the room—or the budget—for an A/V receiver and six or more loudspeakers. A soundbar can fit under or in front of your TV, and a good one will knock your socks off.

Technology has enabled TVs to become ever flatter, thinner, and lighter, but it can’t overcome the laws of physics when it comes to audio. Filling a room with sound requires substantial speakers that can move a lot of air, and those types of speakers just won’t fit inside a thin TV chassis. That’s where soundbars come in.

We’ll explain all the latest soundbar technology, show you the most important features you should look for, and name our top picks in budget, mid-range, and high-end categories. We’ll also provide links to all our reviews of soundbars currently on the market, so you can find exactly the right one for your needs.

Top 5 Features of the OPPO A83

Kicking 2018 Off with a Bang

OPPO is starting the year off strong by introducing its newest member of their Full-Screen family — the OPPO A83. The budget-friendly offering has a lot going for it and with the review already squared away, we thought we’d share our thoughts on its top 5 features that may make you want to consider the first offering from the Chinese brand in 2018.

More Screen Real Estate

The OPPO A83 has a 5.7-inch HD+ IPS LCD display, which makes it the most affordable device from an international brand with a display sporting the 18:9 aspect ratio. Yes, you’re only getting a resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels and many may crave a bit more sharpness that comes with a device with a higher resolution, but really isn’t that bad and pushing the display to Full HD+ would have affected the price and battery life of the phone.

Neptune Convertible Art Lens System Review

Introduction

Lomography’s Neptune Art Lens system consists of “three prime lenses in one”. It uses a base, to which you can attach three different focal length lenses – 35mm, 50mm and 80mm. From the base you can control aperture, with each lens having an optimum maximum aperture. In the base you can also place aperture plates to control the shape of bokeh (out of focus areas). A macro adapter ring is also supplied in the box for close-up shots.

The system is available in a variety of different mounts. For this review, we have been supplied with a Nikon F mount kit, but there are also kits available for Canon EF, Pentax K, and adapters for Micro Four Thirds, Sony NEX/E and Fuji X mounts.

Asus ROG Maximus X Hero review: Enthusiast features make the Hero well worth the money

A fantastic Z370 motherboard with all the essential enthusiast features and decent overclocking abilities, all for a reasonable price

While some Z370 boards are pricier than their Z270 equivalent predecessors at launch, Asus’ ROG Maximus X Hero actually costs around the same amount of money. What’s more, the new board appears to offer more features – rather than taking a machete to the specification list. The Maximus IX and X Hero look quite similar, but there are two clear aesthetic differences. The first is the inclusion of a nifty integrated I/O shield, and the other is a large heatsink for one of the two M.2 ports.

It’s one of the better-featured boards, yet the Hero doesn’t cost that much more than cheaper models. It has an enviable set of features compared with less expensive boards too, including the full complement of overclocking and testing tools, from power, reset and clear CMOS buttons to USB BIOS Flashback and an LED POST code display – all absent on the cheaper ROG Strix Z370-E Gaming. The latter sports Wi-Fi, but while this is missing from our ROG Maximus X Hero model, Asus offers another Wi-Fi-equipped version.

And finally: Cancelled Microsoft Band 3 reviewed and more

And all the other smaller stories from the week

Another week down, another seven days of mayhem. As Mike underlined in Week in wearable, the theme of this week has been about holding onto the past, from Pebble users fighting to keep the platform alive, to the leaked Xbox smartwatchsurfacing yet again. As you’ll see below, that theme continues in And Finally, our look at some of the smaller stories from the week.

And once you’re done with that, be sure to go listen to our latest podcast episode where we expand on some of the week’s biggest themes.

Microsoft Band 3 gets a review

Earlier this week we reported on more pictures of Microsoft’s cancelled Xbox Smartwatch that had emerged, but it’s not the only Microsoft wearable to have been canned during development.

Philips OLED 803 initial review: Stunning new entry into the 4K HDR OLED family

Philips has been a relatively small player in the OLED TV market over the last couple of years, with just two sets being made available: the 901F and 9002.

However, both have been very well received, critically and in sales terms, so it is upping the stakes considerably in 2018. There are several new models coming around spring time, including the OLED 873 – a 65-inch version of the 9002 – and the OLED 973 – similar but with an integrated 6.1 channel soundbar.

The other new addition is the Philips OLED 803, which will come come in 55 and 65-inch screen sizes and it combines minimal design aesthetics with some interesting extra features.

For a start, you get three subwoofer units in the rear, so the bass response should be mighty. Unfortunately, during our demo session in Amsterdam, we didn’t get to test the audio properly – that will have to wait until we fully review the set in the coming months. What we can say now though is that it certainly looks the business.

Galaxy S9 VS S8 VS S9+ VS S8+ pre-release war of specs

Today we’ve had a look at the Galaxy S9 as leaked over the past few weeks as it measures up to the Galaxy S8. We’ve also taken out the Galaxy S9+ leaks and had them measured up against the Galaxy S8+, making for an all-out war of the step-up upgrades just before Samsung’s event. Is this half-step worth the big upgrade? How about if the number isn’t a half-step, but a whole number?

The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9 are quite likely going to be extremely similar in size and shape. They’ll be just different enough that you’ll be unable to use the same case and/or screen protectors as before – but they’re similar. The Galaxy S8 has dimensions of 148 x 68.1 x 8mm, while the Galaxy S9 is rumored to be 147.6 x 68.7 x 8.4mm.

The Galaxy S9 is reported to be just a tiny bit shorter, wider, and thicker than last year’s model. The same is true of the Galaxy S8+ and the S9+, both of which are similar in shape to the Galaxy S8/S9. These larger phones come in at similar size ratios at 159.5 x 73.4 x 8.1mm for the S8+ and 157.7 x 73.8 x 8.5mm for the S9+.

2018Q1 Budget Mid-Range Face-Off: OPPO A83 Vs Cherry Mobile Flare S6 Plus

The A83 faces a local contender

The price of the OPPO A83 is very, very tempting: At a hair under $197, this makes it one of the more affordable 18:9 display phones out there. That being said, we thought of Cherry Mobile’s 18:9 offering as a contender to OPPO’s newest model. How does the A83 fare against the Flare S6 Plus? Let’s take a quick look at their specs:

Sony A7R III vs A9 – Five key aspects analysed

Sony surprised everyone when it released the A9, a flagship camera designed for the ultimate performance in the realm of autofocus and speed. By comparison, the A7r III may appear inferior, especially if you seek the ultimate accuracy for sports and wildlife, but it excels in other departments such as landscapes and still life thanks to its stunning high-resolution image sensor.

The paragraph above is a good summary of the main differences between these two full-frame mirrorless cameras, but it is worth remembering that, despite having been designed for specific genres, they are both extremely versatile and can excel for most types of photography, not just the ones for which they are intended.

So how exactly do they compare? Well, here are the five most important aspects to keep in mind!

Philips 328P6AUBREB review: A colour-accurate HDR monitor with some key problems

Packs in a lot of features, from HDR10 support to full sRGB and Adobe RGB calibration but there are a fair few flaws, too

HDR or High Dynamic Range, has been a hot topic in TVs for a while now, but it’s only just beginning to gain momentum elsewhere. These days, however, everyone is looking to use HDR to enhance the viewing experience.

From phones and laptops with HDR-capable screens, to streaming service providers such as Netflix and Amazon – HDR is everywhere, including the Philips 328P6AUBREB, which joins the Samsung CHG70 as one of only two HDR-capable PC monitors we’ve tested so far.

2018Q1 Budget Mid-Range Face-Off: OPPO A83 Vs Motorola Moto G5s

Let the battle of the budget mid-range phones begin!

With the launch of the OPPO A83, the budget mid-range segment has been strengthened further with more competitors. Given its price range, the OPPO A83 offers the almost the same features as Motorola Moto G5s, for a thousand pesos cheaper. Coming soon: new electric cars

Demand for electrified cars has surged in the last four years, with registrations increasing from around 3500 in 2013 to almost 119,000 in 2017. However, they still represented only 5.6% of the UK car market – and the majority of that was plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) rather than fully electric models.

The reason for this is that most of today’s fully electric cars have quite a limited range between charges, making them unsuitable for long journeys. But a host of manufacturers are preparing to launch new models that solve this issue, while also offering stylish looks and innovative technology. Here we take a look at what’s coming when.

As Pebble is given its death sentence, its most loyal fans are racing to rebuild it

Come 30 June, the lights will be switched off

Since the new year started, Pebble users have been on borrowed time. When the company closed its doors and sold off key assets to Fitbit, chucking the rest on the scrap heap, Fitbit promised to keep the servers running until the end of 2017. That time came and passed – everything has been working as usual – but then Fitbit confirmed that on 30 June it will turn off the lights, more than a year after Pebble left the room.

And so starts the timer for Pebble’s most passionate patriots to rebuild what will be lost. Rebble is very much the spearhead of this movement, a project started by Pebblers to retain full functionality once Fitbit pulls the plug. But it’s not the only one: when she became aware of Fitbit’s plan to end services in June, ex-Pebble employee Katharine Berry, now a wearables engineer at Intel, offered to preserve one of the app development platforms when Fitbit pulls the plug. She even says she’ll try to run it.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Vs iPhone X Vs Huawei Mate 10 – Camera Comparison

Thanks to the popularity explosion of smartphones, photographers are now rarely without a camera. Plus, the technology powering the cameras inside these devices has come such a long way that some don’t even carry a sperate camera around anymore. Two of the biggest names in the industry are, of course, Apple and Samsung but there are other brands introducing camera technology within their devices that are making them a talking point for those who value the photo-taking quality of their smart device. One of the main brands introducing impressive photography tools is Huawei so we thought it would be interesting to compare Samsung’s, Apple’s and Huawei’s current flagship smartphones to see how they compare and if there’s one device, in particular, photographers should be paying attention to.

We will also bring you the latest news on the rumoured soon to be released Samsung Galaxy S9 which will be the next-gen version of the S8 we’ve previously tested and are featuring in our comparison. Alongside the Samsung Galaxy S8 we are comparing the specs of the Apple iPhone X and the Huawei Mate 10 Pro.

Budget smartphones compromise on various aspects to meet the right price. Seat Arona review: A smooth ride with a surprising amount of space inside

Seat has traditionally been the slightly confused brand in the Volkswagen Group – not quite having the selection of cars to live up to its funky, youthful marketing campaign, nor being cheap enough to tempt buyers away from the historically affordable Skoda badge.

But it has been enjoying a purple patch of late, overhauling its popular Ibiza, introducing the brilliant Ateca mid-sized SUV and generally focusing on cars that appeal to the younger buyers.

Fresh off the back of the Ateca comes the smaller Arona – a vehicle that will do battle in a congested market that includes the new Hyundai Kona, Citroen C3 Aircross, Kia Stonic and Peugeot 2008, as well as long-in-the-tooth stalwarts in the shape of the Nissan Juke and Mini Countryman.

OPPO A83 Review: Pint-Sized Selfie Expert?

It’s been a few months since we’ve handled an A series device from OPPO but, before 2017 ended, the Chinese company had released the newest member of their family of smartphones sporting an 18:9 display — the OPPO A83. Today, the device was officially launched in the Philippines and we’ve been fortunate enough to have been able to play around with the device beforehand to be able to give you the skinny on whether or not it’s worth spending your money on. Mophie Powerstation AC review: Plenty of fast-charging power, but needs more USB ports

Plenty of power for all your gear, including your MacBook Pro.

We’d like to see more USB ports and a lower price, but the Powerstation AC is a solid battery pack that can quickly charge all your Apple devices, even those that require an AC outlet.

It’s not a bad idea to keep a small battery pack in your backpack or purse at all times. You’d be surprised how often a little extra juice can save the day.

But what if you have bigger needs? Laptop-scale needs? What if that 12-hour international flight doesn’t have seat outlets? What if you’re doing a lot of work on your MacBook at an outdoor venue and you have no idea if you’ll have access to a outlet?

A large power pack with an AC plug, like Mophie’s new Powerstation AC, may be just what you need.

2018 Citroen C4 Cactus Onetone v Renault Captur Intens comparison

There’s a titanic battle for the hearts and minds (and cash) of Australia’s ravenous small SUV buyers. In 2017, over 104,000 compact SUVs rolled out of dealer showrooms and into the garages of their new owners.

Sadly, only 567 of those sales were accounted for by this French duo.

The polarising Citroen C4 Cactus only found 190 new homes in 2017, while Renault’s entry into the small SUV segment, the Captur, racked up sales of 377 units. It should be noted, they are playing in an extremely crowded market with some 35 different models (and 121 variants) competing for sales supremacy.

8bitdo SN30 Pro review: A Super Nintendo-inspired controller for the PC

The classic Super Nintendo controller grows up.

A controller for gamers with portable needs and retro nostalgia.

8bitdo’s SN30 Pro is the last of a long line of gaming peripherals released by this busy company in 2017. Like the N30 Pro before it, it’s a controller designed for die-hard retro fans like myself who emulate on the PC.

This time 8bitdo is taking its design cues from the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, or SNES for short, one of my favorite consoles of all time. After only months of use it has already become a staple in my gaming arsenal, but it falls just short of being the perfect controller.

5 ways HomePod will beat Amazon Echo and Google Home (and 5 ways it won’t)

The battle lines are drawn.

Apple’s HomePod smart speaker is finally almost here. After a month-long delay that caused it to miss the all-important holiday-shopping season, Apple has announced that HomePod will begin shipping on February 9, more than eight months after we first got a glimpse of it at WWDC.

Apple is billing HomePod as an audio device (hence its home under the “Music” tab on Apple.com), but in the age of growing Amazon Echo and Google Home devices, it needs to be much more than a really good speaker to compete with its fellow AI-enabled competitors. Here’s how the fight is shaping up:

Nike+ Run Club: How to use Nike’s app to become a better runner

How to smash your goals with Nike’s Apple Watch-friendly running app

The first thing you need to know about Nike+ Running is that it’s no longer called Nike+ Running. The latest incarnation of Nike’s running app now goes by the name of Nike+ Run Club, linking the Oregon’s digital running ecosystem more directly to its global, real world running community.

Nike+ Running was given this overhaul back in 2016 and let’s just say the feedback about the initial upgrade wasn’t all that popular. The Apple app star rating plummeted and loyal Nike+ users took to social to vent about missing features and new frustrations such as being forced to share runs to Nike’s own social feed before you could post to Facebook. This wasn’t Nike’s finest hour.

Nike quickly realised it had made some major mistakes and since then it’s been busy addressing many, though not all, of the bigger gripes. There are new detailed training plans across a range of distances, guided runs with audio coaching for those who are working towards less race-specific goals and plenty of the motivation and social smarts you’d expect from the Just Do It tribe.

2017-2018 SYM T2 250i Review

SYM brings affordability and practicality together in its streetbike trainer, the T2 250i. This ride represents the largest non-scooter-type model the factory makes, and the 250 cc mill is its second-largest engine currently in production thus raising the ceiling a bit for the company in the two-wheel vehicle department. Built to take on the “Big Four” for a slice of the low-displacement crotch rocket market, this ambitious little ride carries features and aesthetic touches that most riders will find familiar, but looks ain’t everything at the end of the day.

Design

An oddly-shaped rider triangle leaves even smaller riders feeling a bit cramped with elbows and knees tucked in awkwardly.

The Taiwan-based Sanyang Motor Company isn’t very well known in the States, but Hyundai, one of its major partners, most certainly is. Most of us have heard of Honda before as well, another historical partner and one SYM used to assemble Civic (del Sol) and Accord units for. So you see, this is no little scooter plant, but indeed a long-running (since 1954) Taiwanese heavyweight.

Samsung 860 Pro SATA SSD review: Great performance, capacity and longevity

Samsung packs 4TB into its new drive using more durable 2-bit MLC V-NAND

In a world headed toward NVMe, the appearance of a new 2.5-inch SATA SSD such as the Samsung 860 Pro might seem a bit boring. But that’s ignoring the fact that there are untold millions of PCs with legacy SATA interfaces that deserve the new lease on life that replacing their hard drive with an SSD delivers–it makes that drastic a difference in feel and actual performance. To that end, the 860 Pro is quite likely the best SATA SSD for the job.

Smartphone Specs 101: Display

The specifications or specs are some of the first pieces of information that are readily available to a consumer when scouting for a smartphone. Just roam around gadget stores and salespeople will start bombarding you with specs after introducing the name of a product. However, not everyone is techy enough to process all of that information. To help address that, we’re going to release a series of guides to help non-techy consumers make sense of a smartphone’s specifications. First up is the display.

There are plenty of factors that come into play when it comes to a smartphone’s display, but we will focus on the three most common topics: screen size, resolution, and type.

Display Size

Most smartphones nowadays have screen sizes ranging from 5 inches to 6 inches. In this category, bigger doesn’t necessarily mean better. If you’re just a regular user and are intending to use the phone for basic tasks like social media browsing and photography, 5.0- to 5.5-inch screens are more than enough. In addition, they usually have smaller chassis’, which makes them easier to hold.
