Apple iPhone 7 review: Refining the design rather than ripping it up and starting again

“It is the best iPhone yet”, proclaimed Tim Cook on the stage at Apple’s Special Event in San Francisco at the beginning of the September.

He would be right, the iPhone 7 is, but it is not the leap of technological advancement that many of the fanboys would have liked or hoped for.

Indeed, the iPhone 7 is more the refinement of a phone that is been nine years in the making. But even if Apple is playing it safe, safe is a great place to be. Here’s why the iPhone still cuts it in today’s market.

Is the MacBook Pro Next in Line to Lose the Headphone Jack?

First Apple ripped the 3.5 millimeter headphone jack out of the iPhone, and it appears the port’s time may be up in the MacBook Pro as well. According to a survey from Apple, published yesterday (Sept. 14) by MacRumors, the company is trying to figure out how important the analog audio port is for owners of its professional line of laptops.

shot this

The survey asks “Do you ever use the headphone port on your MacBook Pro with Retina Display?” and also offers questions about battery life, ports and the SD memory reader. Considering all of these at once, it’s safe to assume that Apple’s trying to figure out what it can eliminate to get a longer charge without crippling the notebook’s usability.

Canon EOS M5 preview: ‘Mirrorless 80D’ finally shows Canon can compete in compact system cameras

It’s fair to say we’ve been highly critical of Canon’s compact system camera EOS M line. For a simple reason, though: the Japanese company’s mirrorless cameras just haven’t been able to stand up against the competition.

But that could be about to change. The Canon EOS M5 – which sits above the entry-level M10 and middling M3 (yep, it’s an odd numbering convention that makes no sense) – is, in many respects, like a “mini 80D” DSLR and, finally, offers a focus system that’s actually usable.

So does Canon have what it takes to stand out in the bustling compact system camera market? We experienced the M5 in person, ahead of its official unveil, to get a sense of its potential.

Amazon Echo and Echo Dot hands on

It’s 18 months since the Amazon Echo launched in the US, adding a wireless Bluetooth speaker to Amazon’s increasingly disparate spread of products and services – and now it’s coming to the UK (and Europe).

And a lot has happened in that time, from updates to the Alexa voice-assistant at the heart of the speaker, to additions to the Echo range of hardware products, the Echo Dot and the Tap.

But can Amazon adapt Echo and Alexa to the UK market? From understanding UK accents, terms and instructions, to offering the necessary software and hardware partnerships? And does the Echo speaker actually sound any good?

We’ve had our first look and listen to the UK version of the Echo speaker and the new second-gen Echo Dot in order to find out…

Hublot Big Bang Unico Sapphire All Black Watch Hands-On

Watches can at times be difficult to explain, but that is a challenge we enjoy taking on daily. Still, we were quite gobsmacked when, at BaselWorld 2016, we first tried to wrap our minds around the idea of Hublot engineers painstakingly making a watch and its case perfectly transparent… and then making said watch all… black again? To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the all-black watch, we saw the release of the competitively priced Hublot Big Bang Unico Sapphire All Black, a darkly transparent watch equipped with the latest technological breakthroughs of the brand.

hublot-big-bang-unico-sapphire-all-black-ablogtowatch-02

To be clear, it all started back in 2006, when Hublot launched the Big Bang “All Black,” the official progenitor of all-black watches in which the case, dial, hands, and indices were very black and legibility was, ahem, very much tossed out the window. Ten years later, and much to our amazement and amusement, Hublot is still finding ways to push the limits of what could be expected from the otherwise famously tame and relaxed Swiss watch industry.

Marantz PM6006 review

Hi-fi kit isn’t like festival tickets, train fares or council tax; if the price goes up there is usually a good reason for it.

For as long as we can remember, Marantz’s budget stereo amplifiers have entered the ether around the £300 mark, so we can’t help but look at the £400 Marantz PM6006 – part of the brand’s new 6006 Series, alongside the CD6006 CD player – through quizzical eyes.

The PM6006 appears to be a modest heir to the five-star PM6005, getting a second optical input, new ‘high-performance’ feet to further reduce unwanted vibrations, and upgraded internals, including an improved power supply and extra metal housing to further limit the impact of the digital stage on the analogue signal.

Of course, that means little if it doesn’t result in improved sound quality.

Mio Fuse Review : Are you sporty enough to wear the Mio Fuse?

Kết quả hình ảnh cho MIO FUSE

Fitness bands have split into two distinct groups: those with design and functionality that appeals to athletes and hardcore sportspeople, and those that concentrate on a more stylish, appealing design for everyday wear. While bands from the likes of Jawbone, Misfit, and Xiaomi fall into the latter, it’s bands from Garmin, Polar, Mio, and Adidas that are best known for the former.

The Mio Fuse fitness band wants to sit somewhere between these two camps, alongside devices from Fitbit, by offering 24-hour tracking with heart rate monitoring, and skipping the frills that distract you from the task of getting fitter. We’ve been wearing it for a week to see if it really can bridge the divide.

2016 RAM 2500 Power Wagon Crew Cab 4×4 review

ram power wagon crew cab x review

“There it is!” I exclaimed to my wife, spotting the Power Wagon from more than a block away as it approached. Indeed this big red truck, which reminds me of a toy from my childhood come to life, is a bit conspicuous in the urban sprawl of Los Angeles.

In a world where $70,000 pickups with back massagers and two-tone leather appointments are the new norm, the Power Wagon is commendably out of step with the times. It’s hard not to admire that, even if it works to the truck’s detriment on some levels.

Touted as the “most off-road capable truck currently in production”, the Power Wagon isn’t just a trim package and some oversized tires – this one is the real deal, right down the 12,000 pound Warn winch made specifically for the Power Wagon.

MSI GS63VR 6RF Stealth Pro Review

Typically, when you have a gaming laptop as slim as the MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro (starting at $1,599, reviewed at $1,899), you have to sacrifice some performance. Not so with this model. Thanks to its powerful Core i7 processor and Nvidia Pascal video card, the 15-inch GS63VR can keep up with speedy desktop replacements, but without the backbreaking weight. Even better, the skinny system can support VR headsets like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive without breaking a sweat.

Overall, the MSI GS63VR offers a great combination of small frame and big performance, but you’ll have to live with some unpleasantly warm temperatures while you’re gaming.

Android 7.0 Nougat review: Subtle but super-sweet OS update

Android 7.0 Nougat is the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system. It makes its debut in the LG V20 (which we won’t get to see in the UK) with the rumoured 2016 Google Nexus phones the first time we’ll catch the OS on these shores.

The update is relatively subtle from a user point of view, tweaking where Android 6.0 Marshmallow took things. The new OS acts as the stepping stone to enabling Google’s Daydream VR, while introducing native split-screen functionality, better notification management and more battery optimisation behind the scenes.

So, does version 7.0 turn Android into a sticky mess, or is it sweet refinement all the way?

Kuberg Freerider Review

By virtue of having a motor and a tube on the right that you twist to move forward, we’re calling the Kuberg Freerider an electric motorcycle. And because it’s new and different, we also made a post about the entire line of Kuberg electric bikes, which includes three children’s models in addition to this, the adult-sized Freerider.

A funny thing happened after that post went live. The timing of it coincided with Kelly Knipe’s trip to Southern California. Knipe’s the Western Region Sales Manager for Kuberg USA, and his job, essentially, is to be the evangelist spreading the Kuberg gospel. He had a prototype Freerider with him and offered MO a chance to ride it. That’s an offer we couldn’t refuse.

Part electric motorcycle, part mountain bike, the Kuberg Freerider is definitely something different.

Xiaomi Air 12 review

Rumours about Xiaomi, the big Chinese smartphone vendor, launching a laptop have been going around for a few months already. Turns out that the company had not one, but two laptops in the pipeline.

Xiaomi is known for producing very nice looking smartphones for not a lot of money, the Mi5 being an excellent example of what the company can achieve, so anything emerging from its design team is likely to get heads turning.

And this was the case when the Xiaomi Air 12 and its bigger brother, the Xiaomi Air 13, were launched in August 2016. Both of them have an air of familiarity that can’t merely be coincidental.

Even the name alludes to another laptop produced by a firm based in Cupertino, California – the MacBook Air is the model we’re referring to and there are a lot of similarities here as we’ll find out.

Apple Watch Series 2 review: Fitness first

As the Apple Watch continues to polarise opinion, Apple has released a new version of the smartwatch which hopes to address many of the concerns of the first outing. It’s called the Apple Watch Series 2.

The new watch features a much greater focus on fitness; it’s a device that tries to bridge the void between a basic fitness tracker, like products from Fitbit, and a full-blown dedicated sportswatch, such as those from Garmin.

Does the Series 2’s shift towards fitness, with its inclusion of built-in GPS tracking and water-resistance for swimming, pay off? Is there enough new to appeal to those who couldn’t fathom why they should buy the original model in the first place?

Arnold & Son UTTE Skeleton Watch Hands-On

In 2013, Arnold & Son managed the incredible feat of creating a super thin tourbillon watch called the Ultra-Thin Tourbillon Escapement, or simply, the UTTE watch. The watch was just 8.34mm thick, while the movement itself was a scant 2.97mm thick. Though it has lost the title of the world’s thinnest tourbillon watch to the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Tourbillon, that hasn’t stopped Arnold & Son from improving its UTTE watch. Earlier this year, they debuted the Arnold & Son UTTE Skeleton watch, which claims the title of world’s thinnest skeleton tourbillon watch.

arnold-son-utte-skeleton-ultra-thin-tourbillon-ablogtowatch-1

Creating an ultra-thin watch is no easy feat. First of all (and obviously), there’s the difficulty of manufacturing components to be as thin as they can possibly be. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, there’s the need to ensure that while the watch is as thin as it can be, reliability and practicality are not adversely affected. As the watch and its components become thinner, they can also become less sturdy and resistant to outside forces. In other words, they might be more susceptible to being flexed and damaged.

2016 AUDI RS7 PERFORMANCE REVIEW

There’s a war ever raging between esteemed luxury automakers. Every few years, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, BMW, or Porsche introduces a revolutionary design, engine, or platform to put rivals in an orderly line behind it. In 2005, Mercedes-Benz effectively created the 4-door coupe segment with the introduction of its CLS-Class. Four years later, Porsche countered with its hunchbacked Panamera. Then came Audi’s A7 Sportback, and finally, BMW entered with the 6 Series Gran Coupe.

While the Merc was first to market, like many industries, the best product bubble to the top of the sales charts. In the case of the 4-door coupe segment, Audi’s A7 drove design circles around its competition. The Sportback’s elegant shape never felt like a response to the new segment, but rather a redefinition.

With 2017 model year vehicles on the way, each of these 4-door coupes are preparing for new generations. But instead of waning competition between aging body styles, the fighting has intensified; no longer is this a clash of curves, it’s a showdown of strength.

Morel SoundWall LCR4 SW In-Wall Modular Soundbar System Review

Kết quả hình ảnh cho Morel SoundWall LCR4 SW In-Wall Modular Soundbar System Review

I could start this review by making a comparison between Morel, the loudspeaker company, and morel, the type of mushroom. But someone would no doubt castigate me (or worse) for not referring to morchella, the more technically correct name for morel mushrooms—and therefore, that same someone would deem my comparison to be a mighty poor excuse for an introduction to a Test Report. So, I’ll simply say that Morel is an unusual speaker company, in many ways.

Mind you…I don’t think I’ve ever eaten a morel mushroom, but I’ve been told by restaurant-owning friends who are in the know about such things that these wild mush- rooms are a difficult-to-hunt, infrequently discovered, gourmet delicacy when it comes to fungi. And as far as I can tell, the speaker brand Morel, founded in 1975 by Meir Mordechai, has nothing to do with mushrooms. (According to the company, the Morel name came from Mordechai Electro-acoustics.)

Hasselblad 4116 True Zoom Mod Review : One Bulky Shooter

Kết quả hình ảnh cho Hasselblad 4116 True Zoom Mod: One Bulky Shooter

Smartphone cameras have improved dramatically in recent years, but they still can’t touch the quality offered by many compact cameras, simply because the size of the sensor in a phone is much smaller. The Hasselblad True Zoom, the latest mod for Lenovo’s Moto Droid phones, offers the promise of better photos, without needing to carry around too much extra bulk.

We tested the $250 True Zoom with the Moto Z Play from Verizon, the third Moto Droid phone that works with mods, magnetic attachments that add functionality to the phone (the True Zoom also works with the Moto Z Droid and Moto Z Force). Unfortunately, this camera accessory needs a lot more development.

2016 TOYOTA CAMRY REVIEW

What is it about the Toyota Camry that induces so many people to sign on the dotted line? Let us throw some number at you:

The Toyota Camry has been the best-selling passenger car in America every year since 2001. In 2015 Toyota sold 429,355 Camrys in the United States alone. In comparison, Volkswagen sold a total of 349,440 vehicles of all models. BMW and Mini sold 404,537 vehicles put together. The list goes on but you get the picture. When it comes to mid-size sedans, the Toyota Camry is by far the most popular choice. The second place Honda Accord sold 355,557 units in 2015, and the third place Nissan Altima came in at 333,398. The Ford Fusion sold 300,170, while Hyundai, Chevy, and Chrysler moved about 200,000 apiece of their mid-size offerings, so this market space of rather un-sexy cars is strikingly big business.

B&W P7 Wireless review

If you’re looking for over-ear Bluetooth headphones, you’re probably going to be making your selection based on four main factors: their sound quality, their aesthetics, their comfort and their price.

These B&Ws have the same design as the stylish, wired P7s that won the What Hi-Fi? Award for ‘Best portable on-ear’ headphones in 2013. A case, it would seem, of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” from B&W.

Comfort and build

These wireless equivalents have all the best initial qualities of their wired siblings: the earpads are very comfortable and can be worn all day.

They have the same 17-hour lithium battery as the wireless P5s, charged via USB, so it’s unlikely you’re ever going to run out of power during the day as long as you start fully charged.

2016 Smart Fortwo Review: Tiny car, redux

What a difference a year can make. Roughly 365 days ago I found myself behind the wheel of the 2016 Smart Fortwo for the very first time on the streets of Portland, Oregon, where I spent the day tooling around in the very latest version of the automaker’s ultra-subcompact coupe. This past month, I had the opportunity to once again sample the Fortwo, only this time I had a full seven days to put the car through its paces and match it up with my daily routine. Surprisingly, the difference between those two experiences was substantial enough to change my perception of the car.

Smart’s corporate parent, Mercedes-Benz, listened to a lot of the feedback that it got about the previous generation Fortwo and make a concerted effort to adapt the new version of the vehicle to the North American market. The two biggest changes? More power, and a slightly wider platform that has created a cabin that better accommodates two riders (and introduces a little more stability at highway speeds).
