Meet macOS Sierra : 8 Best Features

Bringing Siri to the desktop is a big win for Mac users, but that’s not the only thing Apple added to the newest version of its desktop operating system. OS X also received a name change to macOS, and this version will be known as Sierra. From better continuity between your phone and Mac to Apple Pay and picture-in-picture, these are the top features of macOS.

Siri

siri on macos

This much expected feature finally got announced at WWDC, bringing Apple’s snarky digital assistant from the iPhone to desktop. Just like on iOS, you can ask Siri to do things like get directions, create a playlist or look up something on the web. It will keep a running list of the conversation, so you can reference back to previous things it said. Apple also opened a Siri API to developers so the smart assistant may be about to get a whole lot smarter.

Auto unlock

optimized storage

While it’s not as snazzy as Microsoft’s Windows Hello facial recognition tech, Apple’s new auto-unlock feature will let you skip typing in a password by unlocking your computer with a nearby Apple Watch or iOS device using what Apple calls time-of-flight networking.

Hush Smart Earplugs Review : Beyond the veil of sleep, Bluetooth-style

I’ve never been a good sleeper. Ever since I was a kid I’d toss and turn hours past my bedtime, chasing elusive Z’s and secretly panicking as the clock ticked closer to reveille. As an adult, I’ve gotten better at shutting my brain down and nodding off, but throw in distractions like noise, lights, or the impending existential dread that can grip us all in the dark of the night, and it’s easy enough for my brain to cling desperately to consciousness and leave me exhausted for the following day. This is where Hush smart earplugs come in.

Smart earplugs? No, these discrete Bluetooth-enabled units from Hush don’t boost your IQ by whispering the contents of Wikipedia into your ears from dusk ’till dawn. Actually, they don’t really even do all that much streaming when connected to your smart phone, as it wouldn’t make sense to plunder your device’s battery life in the name of a good night’s sleep.

Moto Guzzi V7 II Stornello – FIRST RIDE REVIEW

When Moto Guzzi unveiled the updated V7 II at EICMA in 2014, they also revealed three kits created to offer V7 II owners the possibility to customize their bikes. The “Scrambler” kit was the most popular and for good reason, as it injected a more extrovert personality into the Moto Guzzi V7 II, with its high exhaust and moderate enduro capability at an affordable price.

Moto Guzzi V7 II Stornello on-road action

Moto Guzzi’s V7 II Stornello comes from the factory with accessories that turn it into a scrambler-style bike.

I was invited by Moto Guzzi to its shop in Mandello del Lario to try my hands at the installation of the kit, and I must say that it was fairly easy and fun. The kit is high quality, well executed, and even more importantly, is fully homologated so its installation won’t trigger any backfire with the authorities.

Xiaomi Mi Max review

1. Introduction

Goodbye Alexander Bell, hello Tim Berners-Lee and Ray Tomlinson. The inventor of the telephone would not have approved of the hulking 6.44″ but the Xiaomi Mi Max is the kind of device the pioneers of WWW and email would have loved.

The Mi Max is a phone, sure, a dual-SIM one at that. But with its near tablet size, this device is clearly aimed at digital media and communication.

Xiaomi Mi Max review

Though Xiaomi has priced it as a mid-fielder, the Mi Max gives a winning first impression. A slender metal body with thin bezels houses a large battery and a capable 16MP/2160p camera. There’s a more premium option that offers tons of storage and a faster chipset with more RAM to boot, while still keeping a reasonable price.

CybertronPC CLX Osiris 14 Review

There are few things better at killing time while you’re traveling than gaming, but that doesn’t mean I want to lug around a giant 8- or 10-pound behemoth wherever I go. That’s where CybertronPC’s Osiris 154 comes in ($1,349, or $1,599 as reviewed), because with an Intel Core i7 CPU, 16GB of RAM and Nvidia 970m graphics, you can have potent gaming power in a sleek and stylish 14-inch laptop. If it weren’t for the machine’s anemic battery life, the Osiris 14 would be a top pick, but it’s still a pretty good value.

Design

With sharp, angled lines and subtle accents on top of a matte-black metal body, the Osiris sports a simple but stylish design.

PMC Twenty 23 5.1 review

PMC Twenty Series 5.1

You know a piece of hi-fi or AV kit is special when it unearths detail in favourite films or songs that you’d never heard before.

The PMC Twenty 23 5.1 speaker package does just that: it digs up every ounce of detail from a film’s soundtrack, making it sound fresh and exciting, even if you’ve seen the film a thousands times.

We’ve long been fans of the excellent PMC Twenty 23 floorstanders. A glowing five-star first test review led to a 2013 Award for best floorstander over £1,500/$2,250, and our fondness for these balanced and insightful speakers hasn’t diminished over the years.

What we’ve never done is build a 5.1 surround speaker package around the Twenty 23s. So we did. And we liked it so much we’re going to keep it.

Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920 Review

With a picture that’s usually grainy and lacking detail, your laptop’s integrated webcam really doesn’t cut it when you’re streaming on Twitch, Skyping with grandma or dialing in to an important business meeting. In those cases, we highly recommend the $60 Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920, an affordable external webcam that produces detailed video and photos, and that provides software to fine-tune the picture even further. If you’re looking for a great camera with a wide field of view for chatting, videoconferencing and streaming, this is one of the best choices out there.

Segway Creates A Safer “Hoverboard” With The MiniPro

You can say what you want about the wheeled hoverboards that suddenly exploded in popularity over the past couple of years, but you can’t deny the fact that they corrected the flaws in Segway’s original design. Segway, naturally, wants a piece of that action and they’re aiming to do it with the MiniPro.

Similar to the wheeled hoverboards you see everywhere, it’s a smaller version of the original personal transporter, making it a lot less unruly to stow away around the house. Unlike them, it’s designed for more precise control, making it better for everyday transport, while minimizing the potential for accidents.

Elephone S3 – Hands on impressions

The new Elephone S3 has just arrived for the review so we can take a first look at highly hyped bezel-less wonder and share our initial findings and pictures with our loyal readers.

First of all i want to say, that Elephone for sure did something right in the design department and the “wow” effect when first litting up the S3 screen is just there, because they are not lying about the bezel-less stuff and i’m a sucker for those.

Hyundai i30 SR v Kia Cerato Si Comparison

Paternal twins, the 2016 Hyundai i30 SR and 2016 Kia Cerato Si are so close on paper – not to mention specification – separating them will be a difficult ask. Regardless, that’s what we’re going to do here with the newly updated Cerato hot off the press from its local launch.

Few vehicles make more sense as an urban runabout than a hatchback from this small car segment – there’s more space and practicality on offer than some larger SUVs for example.

Hyundai i30 SR v Kia Cerato Si Comparison

The hatchback has really taken hold in Australia, a country that had very little love for them early on. Now though, they are as common a sight on the road as many other, more obviously popular, vehicles. Take a look around you and it’s fair to say you’ll be surrounded by vehicles such as the Hyundai 30 and Kia Cerato, not to mention the Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3, Audi A3, Volkswagen Golf and Mercedes-Benz A-Class. The revolution has well and truly taken hold.

Samsung HW-K450 Soundbar Review

Samsung HW-K450 Soundbar Review

What is the Samsung HW-K450?

The Samsung HW-K450 is the latest soundbar from the Korean manufacturer and sits below the HW-K550 in their new line-up for 2016. These soundbars drop the curved design and hefty price tag found on many of Samsung’s models last year, going for a more traditional shape and a budget price point. The K450 can be picked up for just £249/$373 as at the time of writing (May 2016) and for that you get a soundbar and a matching wireless subwoofer, along with HDMI and Bluetooth support. There’s a big summer of sport fast approaching with both Euro 2016 and the Rio Olympics on the horizon but many modern TVs fail to deliver a decent audio performance. Is the Samsung HW-K450 the answer to your problems, allowing you to fully enjoy these sporting events without breaking the bank? Let’s find out…

2017 Fiat 124 Spider First Drive

In recent years modern automotive enthusiasts have become a spoiled lot. It’s hard to blame them though – we live in an era of unprecedented access to hair-raising performance, one in which 600 horsepower hardly raises an eyebrow and the prospect of a sub-four second dash to sixty miles per hour almost seems quaint. But amongst this output arms race, a contingent of sports car fans still yearn for a wholly different approach to driving bliss.

Colin Chapman, the founder of Lotus Cars, famously once summed up his company’s approach to design with the statement, “Simplify, then add lightness.” It’s a philosophy that’s often at odds with the mindset of automakers today, many of whom instead take an approach to performance that might be more accurately stated as, “Add complexity, and compensate for it with horsepower.” While most fans of high performance aren’t about to shun excess when it comes to engine output, those who subscribe to Lotus’s approach have found themselves relatively underserved amongst the recent onslaught of chest-beating heavyweights.

2018 Volvo V90 Preview – Roll out the welcome wagon

Volvo’s attack on the midsize luxury segment and the German cars which dominate it, the 2017 S90, arrives this year, but the seasoned Swedophile knows more interesting sheet metal is still to come. Due to arrive on US shores in 2017 is the Volvo V90, a wagon that aims to give American buyers traditionally averse in recent years to that particular body style something to sway them.

With an exact launch date for the US market still to be decided – the V90 will land in Europe earlier – it’s too soon for final-spec cars. Nonetheless, Volvo built a small fleet of V90 T6 AWD pre-production models for press to test out ahead of time.

Apple iPod Nano review:

Yes, the iPod Nano still exists. It’s one of the last MP3 players standing in Apple’s lineup, next to the gym-friendly, small-as-a-button iPod Shuffle and the basically-an-iPhone-with-no-cell-service iPod Touch.

The current seventh-generation Nano was introduced way back in 2012, but still lists for $150 (£tk, AU$tk). Even with Apple’s built-in pricing premium, it feels like it should cost about 40 percent less at this point.

On the surface, there’s a lot to like here. The Nano is like a shrunken-down iPhone with 16GB of storage, a touchscreen and a little home button. And while it doesn’t have a full app store, it does offer far more than music: you can also listen to podcasts, watch videos and scroll through photos. There’s an FM radio and Nike+ fitness tracking too, and the Nano offers Bluetooth support for streaming audio to all of the latest wireless speakers and headphones. (One snag: that radio requires wired headphones, which double as the antenna.) It’s battery also averaged well over a day in our CNET Lab battery test. Can you say that about your phone?

Lenovo Phab2 Pro Brings Google’s Tango Technology To The World

If you’ve ever seen the various demos of Google’s Project Tango technology, then you have a pretty good idea of how impressive its potential applications are. Problem is, we haven’t quite had a proper hardware to play around with the tech. That changes with the release of the Lenovo Phab2 Pro, the first ever smartphone to fulfill Project Tango’s sensor and camera requirements.

Armed with Google’s spatially-aware camera tech, the phone uses a 16-megapixel camera to see its surroundings in 3D with precise depth perception, all while relying on extra sensors to monitor location and nearby objects. Those sensors perform the check at a rate of 250,000 times per second, so even minute movements and changes will immediately be registered by the system. With the tech onboard, it’s fully capable of performing all of Tango’s impressive tricks, from accurately measuring a room to augmented reality guided tours, among others.

Apple iPod Shuffle review:

THE GOOD: The Apple iPod Shuffle is affordably priced with a compact design and long-lasting battery. It’s both stylish and easily wearable, thanks to its sturdy built-in clip.

THE BAD: Requires a USB sync from a PC or Mac running iTunes. There’s no Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Only 2GB of storage. Navigating your music is a bit difficult without a screen. You can’t download subscription Apple Music songs.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Apple’s most affordable iPod is a cheap, workout-friendly option for listening to music or podcasts, but it shows its age with a reliance on iTunes syncing and lack of wireless support.

Before the iPhone was Apple’s bread and butter, there was the iPod.

For years, my iPod and I were inseparable. No longer tethered to my denim FUBU CD case/purse hybrid and bulky CD player, the sleek, pocket-size Apple MP3 player was the immediately lovable, magical music box I could bring with me anywhere I went.

I experienced a similar kind of euphoric relief when I got my first iPhone; I no longer had to carry my flip phone and iPod, just this infectiously alluring, futuristic, pocket-size computer.

Grace Digital CastDock X2: World’s first speaker dock for Chromecast Audio

Back in the day there used to be lots of speaker docks for iPods and iPhones. Now we get Grace Digital’s CastDock X2 ($150), a speaker dock for Google’s highly-rated Chromecast Audio Wi-Fi streaming device.

I’ve been playing around with it for the last few days and it certainly is an elegant solution for integrating a Chromecast Audio unit — sold separately for $30 — right into a speaker (you usually have to attach it to an audio input and have it sit outside the speaker).

What’s nice is that the dock has a Micro-USB connector that provides power to the Chromecast Audio and an optical audio cable creates a digital connection. However, I should note that this isn’t a portable speaker with a built-in rechargeable battery. Rather, it has to be plugged in.

RBH Sound Signature SV Series Speakers and Subwoofers Preview

Executive Overview

originally published January 20, 2015

At CES 2015, RBH introduced the prototypes for their new Signature SV line, which is set to replace the successful Signature SX Series sometime this year. It must not be the most well-kept secret that many Audioholics are already big fans of Utah-based RBH Sound’s products; myself included. As I type this, my personal pair of 41-SE/B are already jamming on my desktop!

Intended not only for elite home theater setups but also top-end music-listening setups, the high performance SV line includes a brand new bookshelf, LCR, center, tower, and monitor. Also offered will be a pair of subwoofers, which are offered in both powered and passive options. The SV-44 surround speaker was also exhibited. The cabinet construction is curved-and-layered MDF; at first glance I wasn’t clear on the difference between the current SX series in most of the new SV speakers but upon close inspection, the baffle design and woofer gaskets at the very least are definitely not the same. I’m guessing the midwoofer driver design was changed ever-so-slightly for some performance gains.

Pioneer VSX-1131 review

Big. Powerful. Muscular. Words we traditionally associate with Yamaha and Onkyo’s affordable AV receivers. Not Pioneer’s, whose signature sound has always been more about precision and agility.

We’ve noticed things changing in recent years with the Pioneer’s budget and mid-priced VSX range of receivers gaining in richness and heft, with last year’s VSX-930 achieving a hitherto elusive fifth star.

There’s no VSX-931 this year, the feature-laden VSX-1131 taking its place – and this £550/$825 AV receiver is a powerful beast.

Sound

We start with the two-hour cinematic chase that is Mad Max: Fury Road, and the VSX-1131 roars into life. As the monstrous cars tear through the desert wasteland, the receiver rumbles and charges through the soundtrack with stacks of energy.

Battleborn vs. Overwatch : Shooters of a Different Color

It’s hard to ignore the parallels between Gearbox’s Battleborn and Blizzard’s Overwatch. Both are team-based first-person shooters. Both have tons of colorful characters with varied abilities, and encourage players to optimize their parties. Both present polished, balanced gameplay and embrace fun and humor to an extent gamers haven’t seen in years. So which one is better?

That’s a trick question. Although the temptation may be to put Battleborn and Overwatch head-to-head to see which one comes out on top, the truth is, it’s a bit like comparing birds and bats. They can do a lot of the same things, and they may sometimes even fill the same ecological role, but they’re distinct creatures with more differences than similarities.

MOTOROLA SLIMS DOWN WITH THE MOTO Z, THEN FATTENS BACK UP WITH SNAP-ON MODS

The first flagship devices from Motorola under its new parent company Lenovo have been announced, and they leave behind the X brand for a new moniker — the Moto Z and the Moto Z Force.

Edited on 06-10-2016 by Williams Pelegrin: Includes information that the unlocked Moto Z will only be compatible with GSM networks.

But moving away from the phones for a second, Lenovo’s biggest announcement for the new Moto line is the addition of Moto Mods, cool magnetic modules that you can slap on the back of your phone to give it superpowers. The idea is likely taken from the remnants of Project Ara, a modular phone concept that came from Motorola’s old Advanced Technology and Projects lab. Google kept ATAP after it sold Motorola to Lenovo, and the project has been a part of its ATAP team ever since.

Moto Mods embrace the concept of modular phones, but rather than tampering with the phone’s internals like LG does, Motorola is making things simple by just having people “snap” the mods on the back of the phone with magnets. Motorola is betting big on the snap feature, as evident in their new motto: “Snapping is the new flipping.”
