Ford details SYNC 3’s ambitious roll-out

Ford has confirmed the first cars to get its new SYNC 3 infotainment system, with the 2016 Escape and Fiesta top of the list for a dashboard refresh this summer. The two new models will open the door to a veritable gush of upgrades, with Ford promising that its entire North American line-up will be revamped with SYNC 3 before 2016 is out. Among the improvements are smarter voice recognition which Ford says should help keep hands on the wheel more often.

Announced back in December, SYNC 3 sees Ford step away from the Microsoft system of older SYNC versions and instead use a QNX-based platform.

HidrateMe Smart Water Bottle keeps you hydrated

HidrateMe is a new smart water bottle that integrates into one’s personal fitness goals (and life in general) to both monitor and tailor one’s daily water consumption, tracking it using smart technology and feeding data to a related mobile app on a smartphone. The water bottle is designed to look like an ordinary (but angular and stylish) water bottle, but the mobile alerts serve to ensure one drinks enough, and the data is aggregated over time to show bigger picture details.

HidrateMe is a sort of complement to an existing fitness regime, allowing one to see specifics on their water consumption to round out the details. In addition, the smart technology aims to make sure you’re staying adequately hydrated. It syncs to one’s phone with Bluetooth; the mobile app is available for Android and iOS.

Philips’ first wireless Hue lamp hits stores

Philips’ latest hue color-changing lamp has arrived in stores, with the Hue Go offering a more portable take from the smart home staple. The bowl-shaped lamp is Philips’ first battery powered option in the hue line-up, offering both the normal gamut of user-selectable custom colors together with a set of presets that can turn it into a flickering yoga candle or a meditation lamp, even if you don’t have your smartphone to hand.

Like Philips’ existing hue bulbs, Hue Go hooks up to a specially-created ZigBee network and can be remotely controlled from a phone. However, new to the lamp is a manual button on the back, which cycles between seven presets including cool and warm white light.

Tesla’s direct sales hopes dashed in Texas

Tesla Motors goes the direct sales route, which involves it selling its cars directly to consumers rather than dealerships selling them. This is said to be necessary, according to Tesla, for a variety of reasons including proper consumer education on what the maker’s cars are all about. It has encountered a lot of opposition from the industry for this, however, and in many instances has had to undergo legal battles to continue with its direct sales efforts. Texas, again, has proven most difficult.

Texas has not thus far proven successful for Tesla, which most recently had backed a pair of bills that would have given it the freedom to skip dealerships and sell its cars directly to buyers. Unfortunately, however, neither of those bills have made it to voting, and today marks the end of their bid.

MediaTek introduces Helio P10 octa-core processing chip

MediaTek, one of the leading processor manufacturers for mobile device chipsets, is expanding its newest generation processor family, Helio, by introducing the P series chips. The P10 is a slim, 8 core processor. What this means for mobile device manufacturers, is that they have a the new chip to work with for handsets that aren’t going to get an expensive 10 core processor, let alone an extreme performance 20 core processor like last month’s MediaTek announcement, the Helio X20. Whereas, the X20 has flagship written all over it, the P10 looks like it will be for future mid to upper range handsets.

With the introduction of the Helio P10, we see reduced processor power consumption thanks to a TSMC 28HPC+ process, and this chip is actually the first to make use of such process. When the Helio P10 is integrated into a handset, processor power can be reduced by up to 30%–although that doesn’t directly translat into 30% more battery life or overall power consumption, just processor power.

XCOM 2 announced, puts humans on the offensive

It’s 20 years into the future, and humanity has lost. The alien invasion that we’ve tried so hard to prevent has taken place and now mankind is no longer the ruling species. All that stands in the way of total domination is a rag tag team of freedom fighters with limited resources and always on the move. That’s the even darker scenario that is being painted in XCOM 2, Firaxis’ sequel to XCOM: Enemy Unknown title, the award winning sci-fi game that blends strategy, tactics, X-Files, and and a whole lot of alien goo.

The original XCOM, then spelled as X-COM, was launched way back in 1994 and gained a cult following for its mix of science fiction themes and genre-bending gameplay. In particular, the game switches between turn-based strategy combat and tactical planning. In all its incarnations, the goal has been the same: save the Earth from alien invasion.

Macs older than 1 year may be vulnerable to security exploit

A security researcher has just, reportedly, found a way to gain control of Macs using OS X. The exploits allow attackers to remotely overwrite firmware responsible for booting up the device. Once attackers isolate the flaw in a targeted machine, they could control the computer as soon as it boots up. The specific exploit discovered by Pedro Vilaca is explained in detail in an article on his blog. This attack can give a user continuous, low-level control of a Mac without any initial physical access; therefore, hackers from the other side of the globe can exploit your system.

Shot on iPhone 6 campaign now includes moving pictures

Last March, Apple harnessed the power of the masses to spread the word about the iPhone 6’s photography prowess, resulting in a gallery of more than 50 images plastered in billboards across 70 cities, spanning 24 countries. And now, to prove that its latest smartphones aren’t just for stills, Apple is expanding the Shot on iPhone 6 to the realm of video. The new World Gallery now features short videos from seven videographers that will be showcased in cinemas and TVs in 23 countries across the world.

While the first World Gallery demonstrated the quality of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus cameras, this latest selection of videos adds something more to the table. It exemplifies their ease of use, empowering photographers to record videos even in the most trying of scenes. They also flaunt the power of the iOS 8 camera software, both in the special effects department as well as in stabilization.

McLaren 540C Coupe hits 62mph in 3.5 seconds

McLaren has been busy over the last few months adding new cars to its Sports line up. The first to go into that line was the McLaren 570S coupe. Now at the Shangahi Auto Show McLaren has added a second car to that Sports series of cars called the 540C Coupe. This car is hailed as the most attainable McLaren yet and will be offered globally starting at £126,000.

McLaren is taking pre-orders on the car now with deliveries set to begin in early 2016. The car uses a carbon chassis to save weight. It has a 3.8L twin-turbo V8 engine under the hood. That engine produces 540PS at 7500 rpm and 540nm of torque. McLaren also fits the car with stop-start technology to bring efficiency to the car.

Google was once $6 billion away from owning Tesla

In May of 2013, we reported Tesla and Google were working together on some sort of self-driving car. It may have been more than that; a new report says in 2013, Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Google boss Larry Page were in talks for Google to buy Tesla for as much as $6 billion. Musk was apparently dictating terms, asking for as much as $5 billion extra to keep Teslas rolling off the line, and that he remain in-charge of his electric car empire.

Discussion around the vehicles wasn’t nearly as positive as it is today, which was understandable considering they just weren’t that good. Early missteps caused Tesla to shutter a factory, as customers simply weren’t interested in taking delivery of an expensive proof-of-concept.

Volvo unveils new Lounge Console concept for those who like to be driven

About a week ago, we talked a bit about the Volvo XC90 Excellencethat is an SUV aimed at bringing comfort to both rear seat passengers. That SUV sat four people with both back seat passengers getting more legroom and lots of amenities. Volvo has rolled out another new concept at the Shanghai Auto Show called the Lounge Console.

The Lounge Console replaces the front passenger seat in a car with a console of sorts that aims to give the rear seat, passenger side passenger all the comfort in the world. The passenger side rider gets a space twice as long with what looks like a fancy foot stool that can very nearly turn into a bed for long commutes.

Lane Splitter car concept transforms into a pair of motorcycles

If you’ve ever dreamed of pretending you’re Batman and splitting your car off into a functional motorcycle, that dream has just gotten a little more real. It’s a concept called the Lane Splitter, and when assembled together it functions as a car. When a couple people need to use it, however, it splits into two motorcycles, giving one a way to let their hair down when appropriate and to avoid the rain those other times. Unfortunately, however, it remains only a fanciful concept at this point.

The Lane Splitter features two rear wheels and two front wheels, as well as a hatch that lifts upward for the passengers to enter. There are two seats and two steering wheels, which is expected given that it is to operate as two separate motorcycles. The total vehicle measures in at 128-inches in length, and is intentionally asymmetrical.

Toyota refutes cynics by running Mirai’s hydrogen fuel cell on manure

Toyota is really working to persuade the public that hydrogen cars are the next big thing. Toyota has already surpassed its goal of selling 400 cars in 2015 by taking 1,500 orders in January alone. The company opted for a unique marketing angle to generate buzz about the Mirai, releasing a series of short films about the car. The first is directed by Morgan Spurlock, of Super Size Me fame. Entitled, “Fueled by Bullsh*it”, the video goes into details about the abundance of hydrogen, refuting naysayers (and they are many) of the hydrogen fuel-cell battery.

According to the ad, hydrogen is so abundant that it’s found in waste materials such as manure. While it’s true that hydrogen is found in manure, the video refrains from mentioning exactly how much energy is used to harvest and extract the hydrogen, compared to the energy that actually makes it into the car.

Smart headlamps could blink for snow

Laser headlamps may be gradually finding their way onto high-end cars, but the smart lights of tomorrow might allow drivers to see clearly through snow and rain to potential perils ahead. A team at Carnegie Mellon’s Robotics Institute is cooking up a smart headlamp system that rather than blanket the road with light, instead assesses what’s in front of the car in real-time. By fragmenting the beams into a million smaller segments, each individually controlled, the car could potentially leave a falling droplet of rain in darkness.

Rain and snow are common causes of glare during nighttime driving, with light from the headlamps reflected back and potentially dazzling the driver to more dangerous objects up ahead. While some car companies have experimented with using radar-style technology to augment low-light vision, they’ve never been able to do away with that glare altogether.

Toyota Mirai becomes first fuel-cell vehicle to serve as NASCAR pace car

NASCAR fans who tuned in early to Saturday night’s race at Richmond International Raceway saw a vehicle of a completely different type leading the pack of 43 racers around the track. It was the NASCAR Sprint Cup series’ Toyota Owners 400, and a 2016 Toyota Mirai sedan became the first hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle to serve as a pace car for an event by the racing body. This was another NASCAR first for Toyota, as in 2009 the first hybrid vehicle to act as a pace car was a Camry Hybrid.

Apparently pace cars need to undergo testing by NASCAR, as Toyota says the 2016 Mirai had to be checked to meet certain requirements. It wasn’t revealed what NASCAR’s requirements are, but they can’t be too stringent for a car that only needs to drive slowly for one lap around a track. Either way, the Mirai was approved for pace car duties the day before the race.

Breva Génie 03 can measure speed without being a smartwatch

Who says you have to be a smartwatch to get some “smart” functions? Some traditional watch makers are definitely not buying the whole smartwatch trend yet and seem to be content to just to add some of those features one way or another. Some are placingtransparent displays on top of analog faces while others are hiding the brains inside the strap. Breva has a rather interesting take, putting a makeshift speedometer on a Génie 03 traditional analog watch, without using any digital component.

The Génie 03 basically has a mini anemometer on top of the watch face, using the speed of the wind as a substitute for measuring the user’s moving speed. Since it is actually only measuring the speed of the wind that passes through it, instead of measuring the actual movement of the user, it might not be as accurate and can be “cheated”, but it can still be a good approximate when all you can use are springs and coils.

2016 Acura RDX climbs luxury ladder in loyalty drive

Acura is working on converting entry-level luxe hunters to its cause, and the second step in the strategy that started with the 2016 ILX is this, the 2016 Acura RDX. Revamped and prettified to better match not only Acura’s latest design language – glitzy “Jewel Eye” LED headlamps and less plasticky snout included – but the raised expectations of luxury SUV buyers the 2016 RDX gets a new engine, gives economy a bump upwards, smarter all-wheel-drive, and a more capable infotainment system. Meanwhile, there’s an even more expensive version at the top end to capitalize on what Acura says is a new breed of drivers.

On the outside, the styling is broadly the same as before only tauter, with most changes around the grille and lights, as well as the lower front and rear fascia. The trapezoidal front vents are now chrome-trimmed and sharper, and the wheels are new for the 2016 model year, too.

Gold Apple Watches to be stored in safes in Apple Stores

Much has been said already about how the release of the Apple Watch will be the biggest change in Apple products since the company began selling touchscreen devices. However, Apple’s new smartwatch will also bring about a small, albeit interesting change to their retail locations: the installation of safes. Not just small, personal safes like you may have in your closet, but large, professional ones like you often see in traditional jewelry stores. Sources say these forthcoming lockboxes are intended for one thing: to store the high-end Apple Watch Edition timepieces that come in luxurious gold.

Rolls-Royce is building a super-SUV

Hold onto your top hats: Rolls-Royce is making an SUV, and if the luxury marque’s track record in opulence and excess is anything to go by, little this side of a Bentley Bentayga will eclipse it in the parking lot. In fact, the car firm’s breathless announcement that it’s wading into a new segment even keeps “SUV” itself at arm’s distance, preferring instead to refer to its “Effortless Everywhere” abilities, desert-storming off road intentions, and of course near-ridiculous quantities of high-luxe outfitting. We don’t know what it’s called, but we can guess it’ll be expensive.

The unnamed car will be “high-bodied” and built on an all-new aluminum architecture, distinct from what’s found under the stately skin of the current Phantom, Ghost, and Wrath. Able to “cross any terrain,” it will follow in the tire tracks of previous Rolls-Royce models that tackled mountain ranges and more.

Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6: Look out world, the Brits are back

When Bentley makes a concept, it doesn’t do things by halves, and the Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 is the best evidence of that we’ve seen in years. Dropping jaws here at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, the deep green two-seater isn’t just a design exercise – even though that alone would be enough to have us interested – but, teasingly, the forebear of a new age of styling for the heritage company and potentially even a new line of more performance-focused models to sit alongside the Continental GT grand tourer. And, while you might associate Bentley with old-school luxury, if anything the EXP 10 Speed 6 could be the most technologically forward-looking car at the show.

Lexus LF-SA Concept wants to chew up Smart and MINI

It may look like a Predator helmet mounted on ridiculous alloy wheels, but the Lexus LF-SA Concept is actually pretty sensible: think Alien-hunter for the urban dweller. Freshly revealed at the Geneva Motor Show this week, the diminutive two-door is Lexus’ take on the ultra-compact, sub-B-segment that Smart plays in. Less than 136 inches long and 67 inches wide, there’s hardly enough space on the front to mount the company’s ever-more-gaping spindle grille, here looking as though it’s puckering up to the Lexus badge.

While it may share the 2+2 seating and a general stance with the Scion iQ, in fact the LF-SA apparently bears no connection to the Toyota-made city car. That, according to Lexus, is down to the iQ not quite living up to the Japanese marque’s luxury aspirations (and if you consider the failure of the Aston Martin Cygnet, you can’t really argue with them).

Swiss Horological Smartwatches tout MotionX activity tracking

With Apple’s entry into the smartwatch market, watch makers are finally taking note that the fledgling wearable isn’t just a fad that’s going away any time soon. At the same time, however, they have the unique problem of staying steadfast to their calling of making “true” watches. Some have dived head on with smartwatch models. Others are taking sort of middle road. And instead of doing things completely alone, some have grouped together to bring forth what will be collectively known as the Swiss Horological Smartwatches.

A new Swiss Joint Venture SARL called MMT, short for Manufacture Modules Technologies, was formed to bridge the gap between the traditional, high quality world of classic timepieces and modern advancements in technology. In particular, it is pushing forward a new platform that gives a bit of smartness to watches without compromising on that much flaunted Swiss quality. This secret sauce is called MotionX.

Up close with F 015, Mercedes’ incredible self-driving car

Mercedes-Benz dropped jaws back at CES 2015 in January when its autonomous F 015 Luxury in Motion concept drove onto the opening keynote stage. Then, the UFO-like prototype turned heads when the German firm drove it through the streets of San Francisco last week. The size of an S Class but markedly different from every angle, not only can the F 015 drive itself and four people, but do so surrounded with ridiculous levels of both technology and luxury. So, when Mercedes-Benz asked us if we’d like to check out the F 015 in person, an opportunity to get closer to the autonomous car than ever before, we didn’t turn them down.

Pictures, even getting close to the car while it’s stationary at auto shows, can’t quite prepare you for the experience of watching the F 015 glide smoothly across a runway in your direction. It’s unlike anything else on the road.

Bulgari Diagono Magnesium watch focuses on security

This year’s BaselWorld in Switzerland has become the stage for many companies, watch makers or otherwise, to reveal their own take on the idea of smart devices on your wrist. Some have completely jumped on the smartwatch bandwagon while other cautiously remain on the periphery, like the new Swiss Horological Smartwatch group and their MotionX activity tracker platform. Jeweler Bulgari is making yet another twist, calling its concept device not a smartwatch but an “intelligent watch”, one that practically keeps a safety vault on your wrist instead.

Even calling it intelligent might still be a bit of a stretch. The only “smart” piece in the Diagono Magnesium is an NFC chip and that’s it. That’s not to say that the rest of the watch is not worth a deeper look. It is pretty much what Bulgari says is “purely Swiss”, exhibiting the trademark quality and materials found in luxury Swiss watches.

2016 Jaguar F-TYPE R gets AWD to go jet baiting

Jaguar is adding all-wheel drive to its 2016 F-TYPE R Coupé, part of a range-boosting move that will see variations on the popular model double to twelve. Set to debut officially – along with the rest of the new lineup – at the LA Auto Show later this month, the new F-TYPE R will be good for 0-60 mph in just 3.9 seconds, Jaguar says, and then romp on to a top speed electronically-limited to 186 mph. The big news, though, is the extra traction, which Jaguar tested by taking the new coupé to the Hakskeen Pan in South Africa and pointing it at a jet.

It wasn’t just to make good photos – though the sight of a bright red Jaguar next to a jet flying 50 feet above the ground is pretty impressive – but to test out the radio system that Bloodhound SSC plans to use in its 1,000 mph+ car.

TAG Heuer Carrera Wearable 01 aims to be upgradeable

You definitely won’t be able to fault TAG Heuer for not dreaming big, especially in an age when the future of luxury watch brands is being put under the spotlight. It has just revealed the name of its first smartwatch, itself a rather ambitious undertaking. The Tag Heuer Carrera Wearable 01 is so named because of its relation to the non-smart Carrera 01 luxury timepiece. But more than its Swiss roots, this smartwatch is poised to become the industry’s first ever upgradeable smartwatch, ensuring the same longevity of both its analog and digital timepieces.

Granted, there is no substantial threat to real smartwatches, at least not yet. Smartwatches are still somewhat of a novelty, and in some cases a legal liability. Watch makers, however, are starting to feel the pressure, and some are taking rather different paths to solve the same concern.

GoPro’s Hero+ LCD puts a touchscreen on its entry-level camera

Last week, GoPro unveiled some advanced tools for the more ambitious content creator. Today, for the folk that just want to snorkel in the Bahamas, or jump off a cliff there’s a new member of the GoPro camera family to consider: the Hero+ LCD. If you’re familiar with the company’s naming conventions, you’ve probably figured out that this is a revision of the bare bones Hero that was introduced last fall (and that yes, it has an LCD). The new camera has a few significant revisions over the original Hero though, including a decent bump in the price.

Adorable AI-powered robot Musio just wants to be your friend

Everyone complains about not having flying cars yet, but where are our robotic pals? Films like Short Circuit, Big Hero 6 and Wall-E certainly make them seem appealing, though our ever-constant anxiety around Terminator-like robot uprisings is likely holding them back. Musio, the first hardware product from the AI software company AKAStudy, hopes to change the way we view robot companions. Using the company’s machine learning and natural language technology, it can have back and forth conversations and even learn from your chats, making it seem more like an attentive friend than a dumb machine. AKA’s hoping to raise $50,000 on Indiegogo to get Musio produced — so far, even without promotion, it’s got $16,000 from backers. Musio could be like a smarter physical take on Apple’s Siri: It can alert you of emails and events on your calendar, but it can also interact with connected gadgets in your home. Also, if you can look past its cold, dead eyes (which animate to show emotion) it’s sort of cute.

ASUS’ updated 32-inch 4K monitor does the full Adobe color gamut

Following the $2,200  semi-professional 32-inch, 4K 16:9 monitor announced at last year’s Computex, ASUS is back with a follow-up model dubbed PA329Q. The most notable improvement here is it now delivers 100 percent Adobe RGB color gamut, as opposed to just sRGB; plus it has a 16-bit internal lookup table instead of just 12-bit.

For those who are into video production, you’ll also appreciate the added support for the BT2020 / DCI-P3 color space. The new display is otherwise almost identical to its predecessor: you get the same set of ports (1x HDMI 2.0, 2x HDMI 1.4, 1x DisplayPort 1.2, 1x Mini DisplayPort 1.2 and 4x USB 3.0) and the same 10-bit display color. Each unit is also factory pre-calibrated for high consistency, though it also boasts “the highest compatibility with major hardware calibrators,” should you wish to do it yourself.
