Magic Leap: 5 things to know about the AR goggles

Magic Leap is a company that’s made a head-mounted virtual retinal display, or an augmented reality headset. A pair of goggles that allow users to see images transposed on top of the rest of the world. This company has been in business since its founding in 2010 by Roy Abovitz and has not yet released any products for sale. It might seem that it’s not that kind of company – but it really is.

1. Sundar Pichai

On the company board of directors is Sumndar Pichai, current Google CEO. Pichai was formerly Product Chief of Google, and by association gives Magic Leap some major recognition potential. In their first four years in business, Magic Leap hadn’t made any of its plans public, and had already raised more than $540 in venture funding from big names like Qualcomm and Google.

Tronsmart Jazz Mini Bluetooth Speaker Review: Small but Loud

We review the Tronsmart Jazz Mini!

There are times that we like to lug around a decent Bluetooth speaker during trips. However, one of our major concerns is size: As much as we want a small speaker, small speakers do not necessarily give a crisp and clear sound when you pump up the volume to the max. In most cases, the sound becomes distorted at the maximum possible volume.

This is something that the Tronsmart Jazz Mini wants to prove otherwise. This small speaker, which is roughly the size of a brandy glass, packs a 5W speaker that is as loud as your average TV speaker. Tronsmart did some clever tricks to fit the speaker inside a small chassis, and yet deliver a deep bass and full soundstage, regardless of what music you play.

During my test run, I played a variety of songs from Ariana Grande, Joey Bada$$, DNCE, Maroon 5, David Guetta and more, and the Jazz Mini managed to keep the sound quality crisp and consistent throughout several hours of music playback. Yes, for a Bluetooth speaker this small, it is pretty powerful if you ask me.

Best used green cars (and the ones to avoid)

Buying a used electric car or hybrid is nothing to be afraid of. In fact, there are now some excellent used green cars out there that are worth your hard-earned wedge. Here are the best of them

Fitbit Blaze 2 investigation: Our hopes and expectations for the next half-smartwatch

A new Blaze is on the way, but what might it look like?

The arrival of the Fitbit Ionic puts the Fitbit Blaze, the company’s kind-of-but-not-really smartwatch in a precarious place. The Blaze has been a huge hit for Fitbit, but the Ionic and Blaze are at risk of competing and confusing, especially as any improvements in the new Blaze will likely close the very small gap between them.

Really, the Ionic doesn’t have an awful lot over the Blaze right now. It has the app store, the watch faces, and is a little better for tracking sports, but otherwise they’re very similar. So if a Blaze 2 is coming – and we know it’s being worked on – how can Fitbit differentiate it enough to not risk cannibalizing Ionic sales – which are apparently not doing too hot?

Fitbit engineers and designers are reportedly busy at work on a Blaze 2 that will launch in 2018, possibly quite early in the year; the first Blaze was announced at CES in January 2016.

Alienware Area 51 Threadripper Edition review: The best pre-built gaming PC ever

Alienware’s Area 51 Threadripper Edition is unmatched when it comes to gaming performance but it’s ludicrously expensive

AMD’s new lineup of processors, under the Ryzen name, is an exciting proposition for PC enthusiasts. Finally, after many years of struggle AMD has come up with a range of CPUs that can go toe-to-toe with Intel’s best. Built to be considerably more efficient than anything else AMD has released before, the Ryzen series runs faster and performs better than anything we’ve seen from the firm so far.

What you need to know

Case in point, the flagship Ryzen Threadripper 1950X, which is found at the heart of Alienware’s appropriately named Area 51 Threadripper Edition PC. This is full-bore CPU power: it’s a 180W CPU with 16 physical cores and 32 threads, runs at a base clock speed of 3.4GHz and a boosted, maximum clock speed of 4GHz and is equivalent to Intel’s hyperthreaded Core i9-7960X.

Synology DS1817+ Review

For a number of years now, I have been a big fan of network attached storage (NAS) in order to keep all of my data in one place and simplify my photography workflow. Having access to the same fast storage from multiple machines, as well as the Internet, is important for my needs, so I have been utilizing NAS heavily at my home office. Ever since I got a hold of the Synology DS1815+, I have been a big fan of Synology products. However, there has been one main limitation that I have been struggling with when processing large files or accessing storage from multiple computers, and that is network throughput limitations. With the DS1815+ model only featuring 1 Gbit Ethernet ports, I have been limited to a maximum total of 100-120 MB/sec transfers, which is simply insufficient in today’s high-resolution photo and video environments. So as soon as Synology announced its DS1817+unit with the capability to add a 10 Gbit network card, I knew I had to move up to it. In this review, I will provide detailed information on the Synology DS1817+ NAS and provide detailed information on what one can expect from it in terms of performance and network throughput.

Tamron 35mm F/1.8 VC Vs. Sigma 35mm F/1.4 ART – Lens Comparison

In a tight competition, the Sigma was sometimes sharper, and the Tamron’s chromatic aberration was a concern. Stabilization and weather sealing were important considerations in Tamron’s favor.

The Tamron 35mm f/1.8 Di VC USD was announced years after (and probably as a response to) Sigma’s ART series lens,  but it’s not a perfect answer to the lauded Sigma lens. Tamron did not match the Sigma’s large, f/1.4 aperture with their product, but they did add stabilization, which more than makes up for it in certain circumstances. Which one is better, ultimately? It probably depends on what you’re using it for, but I’ll cover some of the basics of the lenses below (and of course, in the video above).

Cherry Mobile Selfie Two Review: Return of the Selfie

We review the Cherry Mobile Selfie Two!

After three years, Cherry Mobile has introduced a successor to its Selfie smartphone with the Selfie Two. Aside from being more affordable (the Selfie was priced at Php 9,999 back in 2014), the Selfie Two boasts of a more conventional and streamlined design, along with Samsung ISOCELL cameras. and a bigger display.

While the processor on the Selfie Two has been downgraded (it uses a quad-core MediaTek processor instead of an octa-core MediaTek processor), the question remains: Does the Selfie Two live up to the reputation of its predecessor?

2018 Hyundai Kona Active v Nissan Qashqai ST Comparison

People are drawn to small crossovers for various reasons. Some want extra height and practicality compared to a regular hatchback, while others are drawn to the distinctive design and point of difference.

The ‘funky’ Hyundai Kona from Korea, and the practical UK-made Nissan Qashqai, may nominally be rivals, but they go about the business of being small SUVs quite differently. So what’s actually a better bet?

Given the Nissan has just received a mid-life refresh and the Kona is Hyundai’s newest model line, both are well placed for a contest. Here we have the entry-grade models.

It’s the Hyundai Kona Active (with Safety Pack) versus the Nissan Qashqai ST.

LG V30 Plus | V30+ Unboxing and Hands-on Review

We first saw the LG V30 back in IFA Berlin last September. The LG V30+ isn’t really that much different except for the fact that it comes with 128GB 128GB UFS 2.0 storage instead of the 64GB (it’s an odd naming scheme, we know).

LG Philippines decided to release the V30+ instead of the V30 primarily to match the hardware configuration of the competition, most of which already offering 128GB storage as standard fare.

We already did our impressions of the LG V30 the first time we saw it in Berlin but if you’re still curious, here’s our quick unboxing of the device:

The more time we spend with the LG V30+, the more we liked it. It’s a refined version of the LG G6 and nothing like the V20 — sleeker, more polished and looks more premium. For a 6-inch smartphone, it’s not much bigger than the LG G6 which is just 5.7-inch. It’s also less blocky compared to the G6. The edges are rounder both at the front and back so it’s still comfortable to hold despite having a wider profile. It’s even lighter than the G6 by 5 grams and thinner too (7.3mm vs 7.9).

2018 Mini Hatch 5dr DCT FIRST DRIVE review – price, specs and release date

Mini introduces a new dual-clutch automatic gearbox in a bid to improve performance and fuel economy

Priced from £16,575/$22,045 Release date On sale now

Think Mini and a peppy petrol or diesel engine paired with a snappy manual gearbox probably springs to mind. However, for some a manual won’t do, and like most of its rivals, you can also have your Mini Hatchback with an automatic gearbox. The trouble is, the old six-speed option previously available wasn’t particularly recommendable. That could be about to change.

Ahead of the three and five-door hatchback range’s mid-life facelift, Mini has introduced a new dual-clutch automatic to its lower-powered petrol and diesel models. The new ’box will be shared with BMW models built on the same underpinnings, such as the 2 Series. The sportier, larger-engined Cooper S and John Cooper Works versions will persevere with the old automatic for now.

Google Fit is the simpler, less medical-focused version of the two, utilising the advanced sensors in your smartphone to work out when you’re walking, jogging or cycling. It also works neatly with Android Wear smartwatches and the web, and support for third-party devices and apps is on the up.

So, if you’ve just picked up a new Wear watch or you’re ready to ditch your current fitness app favourite, here’s how to get started with Google Fit.

Jabees BTwins Review

Jabees BTwins: Detailed Review

I’d been hearing of this Hong Kong based company for quite a while. The fact that they made one of the first relatively affordable, “truly” wireless in-ears in the market, made me await their official India launch with a fair bit of anticipation. Now when I say relatively affordable I mean compared to the $150 price range of other top-end truly wireless in-ear headphones like the Samsung Gear IconX or the forever out-of-stock Apple AirPods. At roughly $99 how good are the Jabees BTwins? Let’s have a look.

Build and design

The two bullet-like ear buds feel quite sturdy and despite having to cram the battery, drivers and other circuitry within the same housing, they aren’t too big. When inserted into your ear they won’t protrude too far out. The metal housing is quite strong and appears like it should be able withstand a drop or two. The rubber flange or hook works well to secure the earbuds in place.

Micromax Canvas Infinity Review

Micromax Canvas Infinity: Detailed Review

Until last month, all budget smartphones looked pretty much the same. LG broke that cycle with the Q6. The phone brought the most desirable design feature from the company’s flagship, called the Full Vision display, to a more affordable segment. While the LG Q6 looks good, its performance isn’t great. Now though, there is a new smartphone on the block from Micromax, offering similar design at an even more affordable price, and it is called the Micromax Canvas Infinity. The phone packs decent hardware and is a potent contender in its category. However, there is more to discuss.

Display and UI

The Canvas Infinity is all about its display, so let’s begin with that. The phone features an edge-to-edge display with an aspect ratio of 18:9, similar to the one we saw earlier on the LG Q6.

MSI Vortex G65VR 6RF Review

MSI Vortex G65VR 6RF: Detailed Review

I have been a PC gamer for as far back as I can remember. I have watched the PC industry shift from 32MB of RAM to 32GB. I have also witnessed the evolution of computer graphics, from the blocky character models of Roadrash to the super realistic textures of Battlefield 1. However, in the last quarter century, the humble PC gaming tower has remained primarily the same. It became smaller over time, but it the squarish guise has remained more or less the same, until last year when MSI introduced this, the Vortex.

To be fair, this is not really an original design since Apple already made a cylindrical PC back in 2013, with the Mac Pro. However, Apple would be the first to point out that the Mac Pro is a Mac, not a PC. The Vortex, however is not just a PC, but a gaming PC at that. It has the same upgradability restrictions as the Mac Pro, but the Vortex packs more powerful hardware in this cylindrical chassis.

Gionee A1 Lite Review

Gionee A1 Lite: Detailed Review

If you have an affinity for selfie phones or phones with big batteries then you must have heard of Gionee. The company has been pushing these two aspects in smartphones with a lot more enthusiasm than its competition. This year we have already seen the Gionee A1 and A1 Plus, which were launched with the same philosophy, but didn’t fulfill it completely. Now, the company has launched an all new phone called the A1 Lite that is smaller than either of two previous devices.

Priced at Rs 14,999, the phone tries to create a space for itself in the very competitive sub-15k smartphone segment. Like its brothers, the A1 and the A1 Plus, the A1 Lite is also aimed at selfie lovers and features a 20MP front facing the camera. Complementing the ‘Selfie and battery’ tag line of the company, you also get a 4000mAH battery on the device. Is it worth the price?

ASUS ROG Pugio Aura RGB Review

Our Verdict

The ASUS ROG Pugio’s push-to-fit design for micro-switches is a wonderful feature for power users who would love to have the flexibility of picking between two different micro-switches. Both of them have their advantage and disadvantage, also giving owners the scope of having spare switches in case the default ones are damaged. In terms of build quality, the body is sturdy with no audible sensor rattle. We would have preferred a bigger surface area for the mouse feet, but that is subjective and the mouse was still able to maintain a smooth glide over cloth pads. There are three RGB lighting zones on the mouse with a beautiful LED strip on the bottom. The ROG Armoury software lets you control the lighting effects along with macros, acceleration, key functions, etc. These settings can be stored in three profiles on the mouse which can be toggled from the mouse itself. Although the features, build quality, and design score well in our tables, the mouse fails to offer great sensor performance. We observed several anomalies during our benchmarks and they have been discussed in more detail in the performance section.

ZTE Nubia M2 Play Review

ZTE Nubia M2 Play: Detailed Review

Nubia M2 Play is the latest addition to the company’s portfolio, replacing the Nubia M2 Lite (review). The smartphone is powered by a Snapdragon 435 chipset and comes with 3GB of RAM. It iterates some of the same mistakes made by its predecessors, but has its moments as well.

Build and Design

Nubia’s candy bar design looks good and even though the device is targeted at budget buyers, it has a premium feel. The Nubia M2 Play sports a unibody metallic design and feels quite sturdy. It features rounded edges, which makes holding the device during longer gaming sessions comfortable.

TaoTronics TT-SK15 Soundbar Review

Everything from smartphones to TVs are going compact. Little wonder then that the conventional home theatre systems are making way for streamlined soundabars. Now for high-end TVs such as LG’s OLED line-up, you have expensive soundbars from Sony, Philips, Bose, and Sonos. But, if you prefer value over finer detail, and own a large screen TV from brands such as Micromax, Intex, or VU, you are more likely to buy a cost-effective soundbar. And that’s the crowd, TaoTronics is targeting with its TT-SK15 Bluetooth soundbar.

Design And Build

The TT-SK15 costs only Rs 6,000. However, going by the looks, it looks a lot more expensive than that. During the testing, most of friend would guess its price to be north of 10k. Chinese brands are incredibly good at delivering excellent build quality at affordable prices. The soundbar is made of quality plastic. Even, the speaker grille foam does not feel cheap.

Be it, design or build quality, TaoTronics has done a great job. The design is surprisingly understated, with prominent use of black. The on-device control panel is housed on a metal strip, which is a nice touch. For Rs 6,000, you can’t possibly ask for more.

Setup

The TT-SK15 can sit in front of your TV. Or you can wall-mount it just two screws. Hook up the TaoTronics TT-SK15 to your TV using the bundled RCA cable. There’s an option for 3.5 mm and optical audio input as well. Optical audio input is ideal to pair it with gaming consoles. For all your other smart gadgets, there’s Bluetooth connectivity.

Apart from the on-device controls, the TaoTronics TT-SK15 comes with a sleek remote controller. It clearly takes the design inspiration from Amazon Fire Stick’s remote. It is quite user-friendly so I’m not complaining. It has a D-pad with playback and volume control. You get dedicated buttons to switch to different input methods such as Bluetooth and coaxial cable.

Performance

As I said earlier, it is difficult to gauge the TT-SK15’s price by the looks of it. However, the soundbar’s audio quality gives it away. Not that the sound output is bad, but you can immediately tell that it is the sound of a budget audio product.

The soundbar houses 2-channel system inside its sleek body. It has 40 Watt speaker in 2 x 20 Watt configuration. On full volume, it is loud enough to fill sound in a 2BHK flat. It is perfect for watching movies.

TaoTronics-TT-SK15-Soundbar-1

While there’s nothing to complain in terms of loudness, clarity is definitely not is forte. The speaker sounds muddled when you play Bollywood songs. The TT-SK15 also accommodates two passive radiators. But, I feel that the speaker lacks depth when producing low frequency sound. So, if you prefer bass to be on the higher side, this soundbar for not you.

Verdict

Priced at Rs 6,000, the TaoTronics TT-SK15 offers great value. This well-built soundbar effortlessly blends in a contemporary living room. It is a no non-sense soundbar, which is easy to setup. The sound output could have been better. However, considering its price, I would say it is a good budget speaker to accompany your TV.

Top 5 Details On Triumph’s 2018 Bonneville Bobber Black

Anything retro seems to be all the rage lately, and I’m okay with that because in a way, it pulls on our heartstrings. Technology is improving so quickly that it’s hard to keep up with all the latest and greatest. As soon as you think you have the best, something better comes along. But one thing that stays constant is the past, and this is where nostalgia comes into play.

Nostalgia is more than just a feeling or reaction to the past, it’s a warm and fuzzy, powerful emotion that we sense whenever we delve into fond memories from our yesteryears. It’s an homage to the way things used to be, and motorcycle manufacturers are taking advantage of it – as they should. Just about all the big companies have retro inspired bikes now – from Yamaha’s XSR700 and XSR900 and Kawi’s RS lines to Triumph’s Bonnevilles and Bobbers.

Lephone W2 Review

Lephone W2: Detailed Review

It’s hard reviewing a phone like the Lephone W2, where every criticism of the phone can be assuaged with one sentence, “what are you expecting for the price?” Now I know exactly how my colleague, Prasid Banerjee felt when he reviewed the Ringing Bells Freedom 251 (review). Priced at Rs 3,999, the Lephone W2 is aimed squarely at the first time smartphone buyer. But is the price of the phone its only highlight, or does it have something else up its sleeve? Let’s find out.

Build and Design

For a device in this price range, it’s not at all surprising that the phone comes with a plastic build. But plastic does not equal terrible build. The rounded corners and compact design meant that the phone was quite comfortable to hold. The use of glossy plastic did make it a tad slippery but, “what are you expecting for the price?

Samsung The Frame 4K UHD Review

Samsung The Frame 4K UHD: Detailed Review

You know how televisions always interfere with the aesthetics of your room? Well, Samsung does, and the company is doing something about it.

Unveiled at CES 2017, the Samsung Frame was a concept television at the time. However, the company is actually selling it now. And though it caters to a very niche audience, it’s perhaps the only TV that audience will like. It aims to make the TV a part of your furniture, and it succeeds in doing that, in many ways. The Frame isn’t the perfect TV, but it’s probably the perfect marriage of aesthetics with technological prowess.

Meet the all-new 2019 G-Class: A Mercedes icon reinvented

Having an icon in your line-up can be a blessing and a curse, something Mercedes-Benz knows all about when it comes to refreshing fan-loved stalwarts like the G-Wagon. Newly redesigned, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is only ready to show off its updated interior right now, but I’m happy to report that the automaker walked that fine line between adding new features to bring the G-Class into the modern era, while still preserving those all-important elements enthusiasts demand.

There’s really no mistaking the G-Wagon for anything else when you see it on the road, so maintaining parity inside the cabin is just as important. Since its introduction in 1979, and with over 300,000 vehicles roaming the roads, the SUV has gone through minor facelift changes, but nothing to the extent of the updates for the 2019 model year. Are all these changes for the better or worse?

InFocus Turbo 5 Plus Review

InFocus Turbo 5 Plus: Detailed Review

The InFocus Turbo 5 Plus presents itself as the successor to the Turbo 5 smartphone (review). It comes with a a dual rear camera setup and a large battery. While the Turbo 5 had its faults, the Turbo 5 Plus tries to overcome them. Will it be able to stand up to the fierce competition in its segment? Let’s find out.

Build and Design

The InFocus Turbo 5 plus sports a candy bar design, similar to the Turbo 5. With an almost full-metal back and 2.5D curved glass on the front, InFocus has improved the build quality of the smartphone as compared to its predecessor. It feels more rugged and sturdy, though this isn’t perfect either. The rear panel can be pressed in, which is a sign of cheaper materials.

The Samyang AF 35mm f/1.4 FE is comprised of 11 elements in 9 groups including two aspherical elements and two high refractive index elements and features a rounded 9 blade diaphragm which creates an attractive blur to the out of focus areas of the image.
