Volume PS4 review – Solid Metal Gear

The new game from the creator of Thomas Was Alone is a homage to Metal Gear Solid, but does it have any new tricks of its own?

We’re not sure what we really expected from a follow-up to minimalist, story-based platformer Thomas Was Alone, but a love letter to PS one era Metal Gear Solid would not have been our first guess. But that’s, very obviously, what Volume is, right down to the overbearing story that occasionally gets in the way of the action. But viewed purely as a stealth game this is destined to be one of the year’s best.

Microsoft to debut new phones, tablets at October event

Microsoft will hold an October launch event to debut new hardware, including phones and tablets, sources told technology website The Verge Thursday.

The Verge, citing anonymous sources “familiar with Microsoft’s plans,” confirmed multiple new hardware devices would be debuted this fall. Among them: revamped Surface Pro 4 tablet, and phones Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL.

The new devices would come on the heels of Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 10, released as a free upgrade July 28. The launch would reveal how smartphones will fit into the new Windows 10 ecosystem, The Verge said.

Visitors look at Windows-enabled smartphones, including the Nokia Lumia series, at the Microsoft stand at the 2015 CeBIT trade fair on March 16, 2015 in Hanover, Germany.

The Windows 10 roll out included a new app store available across computers, tablets and phones, complete with a companion app that enables iPhones, Android or Windows phones to work seamlessly with Windows 10.

Previous leaked photos have already created buzz about the latest Lumia models, The Verge said, against the backdrop of Windows 10’s expanded capabilities. The Lumia 435 and 532 released in January, along with the 640 and 640 XL released in March, all fall on the affordable end of the spectrum, Microsoft said in press releases.

More may become clear in a few weeks: IFA Berlin— a major technology trade show known for innovative debuts—is in early September.

Rumors of new hardware come just a month after Microsoft announced it would restructure its phone hardware business. The company said it would move thousands of jobs and resources away from its Nokiaphone business to pivot to “a more effective and focused phone portfolio while retaining capability for long-term reinvention in mobility,” CEO Satya Nadella wrote in an email to employees.

In the first few months of 2015, Microsoft’s platform saw its share of the U.S. smartphone market decline to 3 percent in April from 3.6 percent in January, according to research firm comScore. Shares of Microsoft are trading down 1 percent year to date.

Microsoft declined to comment further on the reports.

Vaio plans overseas sales offensive

Vaio Corp. is aiming for a comeback in overseas markets by restarting sales of personal computers in the United States and Brazil as part of efforts to revive its Vaio brand cachet, President Yoshimi Ota said in a briefing.

Vaio – which became an independent firm after Sony Corp. spun it off a year ago – is now at a crucial stage of its revival plan. With mobile phones spreading rapidly, sales of personal computers are sluggish and there is fierce competition among PC companies.

During the briefing Wednesday, Ota clarified the company’s new strategy of targeting overseas and corporate customers to boost sales of its high-end personal computers.

“By abandoning the mindset that we were of a division of a major company, we’ll be engaged in the business from design to marketing,” Ota said.

Vaio aims at differentiation from rival companies by selling high-end computers worth about ¥200,000 (S$2,286) as its core products.

According to MM Research Institute, however, its market share in Japan remained at slightly more than 1 percent in fiscal 2014. The company also launched low-priced smartphones this year, but sales have been slow.

In the briefing, Ota said the company plans to boost its sales network and gear up for its new business plan, restarting sales of its high-end personal computers in the United States and Brazil in September or later to confront its rivals.

Sony has been absent from the overseas computer market since it withdrew in February 2014 when the Vaio brand was part of the company.

Vaio previously contracted out sales of its products to Sony’s sales subsidiary, but it launched a sales department in June to start developing a market targeting companies.

Vaio also plans to start commissioned manufacturing of robots as its core project in a new business, using technology that was developed for Sony’s best-selling pet-dog robot Aibo.

Sony launched the Vaio brand in 1996, and its slim purple Vaio notebook became a big hit the next year. After that, the Vaio series became a popular brand.

The sales of Vaio notebooks peaked in fiscal 2010. Thereafter, Sony experienced difficulties in the competition with Chinese and Taiwan manufacturers that sell cheap products.

Sony spun off its Vaio computer division by selling it off to an investment fund in 2014.

Sales channel offers vital insight

Vaio aims to double the sales volume of personal computers this fiscal year from the previous year, Ota said during an interview with The Yomiuri Shimbun.

As Vaio has only about 240 employees, the company had commissioned its sales to Sony’s sales subsidiary.

“We created the new firm, but we didn’t have much awareness about profits,” said Ota who assumed the post of president in June.

After a sales department was established in June, Vaio’s employees including engineers started sales operations.

“We can directly feel why our products did not sell well. [The experience of the sales operation] gave us some hints for new products,” he said.

Sales to small and midsize companies were not satisfactory, but now they have been picking up, Ota said. “We’ll focus on creating products for corporate use to change the corporate culture to a profit-conscious one.”

Rumoured HTC O2 can be the phone that saves company

HTC has had a torrid last couple of years. In the recent past, it has cut jobs and says that it will focus on a smaller portfolio with devices specifically made for emerging markets or high-quality flagship phones. And with that, the latest leak points towards the HTC O2 or M10, which will be its flagship phone for the second half of the year.

Specifications wise, you’d expect the usual stuff and the rumour mill is also pointing towards the same. A 6-inch screen with a 2K screen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB RAM and 64/128GB variants.

HTC’s cameras of late have disappointed, but it appears that the resolution will remain the same at 20.7-megapixels for the rear and 5-megapixels for the one on the front. The phone is also expected to have a capacious 3,500mAh battery.

The phone will likely run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow at launch.

Now, some details about this phone are sketchy. For instance, the image render that is doing the rounds has been discredited by famed blogger Evan Blass. He tweeted,” PSA: That supposed “HTC One M10″ image going around is just my M7 render from 2013, ha. Definitely not Aero, either.”

Its launch date is also not clear. Considering its use of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 CPU, one shouldn’t expect it before Q4. It could also be HTC’s successor to the M9, which would likely mean Q1 of 2016 at MWC rather than a 2015 launch.

Whatever may be the case, HTC is in dire need of a hit. In markets like India and China, brands like Apple and Samsung outsell it at the high-end and at the lower mid-range brands like Xiaomi and Micromax have eaten up its marketshare. It clearly needs to reassess. This could be the phone that it hopes will save it.

Huawei’s Honor 7i has just one flipping camera

Even though Huawei is just two weeks away from its IFA launch event, it couldn’t help but push out another eccentric device beforehand. In Beijing today, the company unveiled the Honor 7i which, like the Oppo N series, has a camera that can flip around for some quality selfies.

The imager in question has a 13-megapixel resolution, an f/2.0 aperture, a 28mm wide-angle lens and dual-tone LED flash, so not bad on paper.

These batteries could last forever

This week researchers at MIT and Samsung have revealed a new approach to batteries, paving the way for “rechargeable batteries with almost indefinite lifetimes.” MIT suggests that the electrolyte is the key to this next-generation solution to longer-lasting batteries is in a solid electrolyte instead of liquid, liquid being the element used in most common rechargeable batteries today. This new solution could also make the next generation of batteries safer, too, reducing the chance of explosions and harmful chemical leaks.

Sony looks to the crowd to beta test next PS4 system update

There was a time when software development was such a closely guarded process that almost everything happened behind extremely closed doors. Even beta tests were handed off only to accredited QA companies under heavy NDAs. Things have change these past years, with some of the responsibility of testing software falling on the shoulders of volunteers, most of them just end users themselves, but very passionate ones at that. Sony seems to have wisdom, not to mention practicality, of that setup and is now looking for morePS4 beta testers to join its army.

Ford patents self-driving “lounge” car

The primary motivation for self-driving cars has mostly been for safety, taking stressful manual processes out of the equation and keeping error-prone humans away from the wheel. But if humans won’t be driving anymore, there won’t be much left for them to do right? Well, why not take advantage of the situation to do a bit of socialization? In a patent for an “Autonomous Vehicle with Reconfigurable Seats”, Ford is suggesting exactly that, with front seats that can be moved to transform the cabin into a more comfortable lounge.
