How to Build Your First Home Theater From Nothing

Setting up a proper home theater doesn’t have to be terribly expensive or complicated. If you’re still watching TV on a tiny screen and crappy speakers, it’s time to upgrade. Here’s how to set up your first real home theater.

There are a few basic components to any home theater setup. In this case, when we say “home theater,” we’re not talking about putting a full movie theater in your home—though we’ve shown you how to do that before—we’re just describing what your home entertainment system will be like when you’re finished: multiple devices, an awesome TV, great speakers, all working together in harmony.

What You’ll Need for Any Home Theater

We’re going to assume you have a few things already, like a game console, Blu-ray player, or a cable box—the stuff you’re actually going to hook up to your home theater. Our home theater will be a little basic (after all, these can get really complicated if you have the budget and the space), but it’s a good start if you don’t have much gear.

2018 Aston Martin DB11 V8 first-drive: The driver’s GT

First the bad news: just because Aston Martin is adding a V8 engine to the DB11 lineup, doesn’t mean that the car is much more affordable, just in case you’ve been holding out. Indeed, if price is important to you, then might I divert your attention to the 2018 Lexus LC 500instead. The V8-powered DB11 is on an entirely different level, distinguishing itself intriguingly when compared to the driving dynamics and characteristics of the 600 horsepower V12 DB11 we drove earlier this year.

Even though the two cars are essentially the same, beyond their engine and a few exterior changes, the two cars handle in a completely different way. Aston Martin President and CEO Andy Palmer says it best: “we’re not in the business of making Russian nesting dolls.” All the same, you’d be forgiven if with the two cars side-by-side you couldn’t tell the differences. Happily I’ve got you covered – along with chief officer and studio head at Aston Martin, Marek Reichman – and can walk you through the subtle changes in the design elements between the 12-cylinder and V8 engine.

HyperX Cloud Alpha review

hx-features-headset-cloud-alpha

In the last few months, we’ve seen an explosion in affordable gaming headsets, with products like the $99 (£109, AU$169) Logitech G433, $79 (£54, AU$99) Astro A10 and $99 (£84, AU$159) SteelSeries Arctis 5. Though HyperX already introduced the Cloud Stinger ahead of this new pack, it’s now introducing a slightly more mid-range HyperX Cloud Alpha that bumps up the quality level without a stark increase in price.

In fact, at $99 (£99, AU$169), we can say the HyperX Cloud Alpha is the best-sounding gaming headset in its price bracket, even if it isn’t as versatile as some of its competitors.

Design

If you’ve seen the previous two iterations of HyperX’s Cloud and Cloud II gaming headsets, the Alpha will look fairly familiar – though there have been improvements.

The new slotted metal frame gives the headset a more industrial look than the crescents of solid metal used in previous HyperX Cloud products. At the same time, we appreciate the fact that the peripheral maker has finally given the headset one cohesive, anodized look, matching the plastic bits to the aluminum frame.

Samsung Galaxy J7 Core Review: Underrated Smartphone with a Great Camera

We review the Samsung Galaxy J7 Core!

When Samsung introduced the Galaxy J7 Core as a budget gaming phone, the idea was somewhat peculiar. Priced at a hair under Php 10K/$197, the Galaxy J7 Core offers modest specs, along with a few software gimmicks to make it a phone optimized for playing some of our favorite Android games.

Along with some gaming-centric features, the J7 Core’s body was designed for users to be comfortable with hours of playing. Did it meet our expectations as a so-called budget gaming phone?

2018 Lexus LS 500 First Drive: The luxury of identity

If it’s usually your thirties when you discover your real identify, you could argue the 2018 Lexus LS 500 and LS 500h are ahead of schedule. The fifth-generation of the automaker’s flagship luxury sedan arrives just before the car’s thirtieth birthday, promising more refinement, more technology, and – arguably most important – more character. If the original LS defined Lexus as a luxury upstart in 1989, the new LS finally sees the automaker come to terms with its Japanese roots.

It’s no stretch to say that some generations of LS have been anonymous in their design. This, after all, is the car that for several years was the vehicle-of-choice for the clandestine agents in the BBC series “MI-5” when they wanted to remain surreptitious around London.

Denon DP-300F review

The vinyl resurgence is here to stay and as a result, many audio companies are releasing new turntables. This makes choosing the right turntable quick tricky, as there are a ton of good options – especially for those first getting into vinyl.

That being said, if you’re just starting out, the Denon DP-300F is an excellent choice because it’s fully automatic i.e. you can simply press a button to start and stop playback rather than physically move the arm. It also means that when you’ve finished one side of the record, the tonearm automatically lifts and returns itself to resting position, preventing premature needle wear.

While audiophiles won’t be impressed with the $329 (about £245, AU$417) Denon DP-300F, beginners who aren’t looking for the best sound quality will likely find its sound good enough, especially for those who don’t have high quality speakers or headphones in the first place.

Dell Inspiron Gaming Desktop review

Zvbpqmdyx2fF3i4EXQ4m5b-650-80

It’s tough for a dyed-in-the-wool PC gamer to admit out loud, but the days of building your own PC to save money might be over. It’s really hard to build a warranty or exchange guarantee into your home-brewed rig.

It’s still a rewarding and incredible experience, but if you just want to dive headfirst into the world of PC gaming, computers like the Dell Inspiron Gaming Desktop are available at better prices than buying the individual components and assembling them.

The Inspiron 5675 specifically is built around AMD’s new Ryzen family of processors. There are versions available with Rzyen 3 1200, Ryzen 5 1400, and Ryzen 7 1700X chips, and all but one model runs Radeon 500 series graphics cards. The top-end model trades out red for green, tucking a GeForce GTX 1060 into the chassis.

Alienware Aurora R6 review

Alienware has a reputation for building large, powerful, and expensive gaming machines, yet its Aurora range of gaming desktops boast compact designs and more affordable prices, while maintaining Alienware’s hard-won standing in the gaming community. The Alienware Aurora R6, which we review here, looks set to continue that tradition.

The Alienware Aurora R6 sits between Alienware’s Alpha range of affordable and compact PCs and the high-end Alienware Area 51 (we just reviewed the Threadripper Edition). While this puts the Aurora R6 in the mid-range of Alienware’s offerings, don’t be fooled into thinking this is simply a middle-of-the-road gaming machine.

It combines everything we’ve come to expect from Alienware’s devices, including powerful components and an eye-catching design.

Logitech MX Ergo Wireless trackball mouse review

Few things in computing have stayed quite as consistent as the keyboard and mouse. With each passing year monitors reach ever higher resolutions and framerates, graphics cards pack in more and more teraflops of graphical horsepower, and CPUs add more cores and greater clockspeeds.

In contrast, although peripheral manufacturers will always make bold claims about the speed and reliability of their products, the keyboards and mice they produce are fundamentally the same from year to year.

Trackball mice represent a completely different way of interacting with your computer. We’ve been putting Logitech’s new MX Ergo ($99.99 / £99.99 / AU$129.95) through its paces the past couple of weeks to determine whether it’s worth switching away from the traditional mouse.

And, depending on what you’re using your computer for, it might just be worth it.

Intel Core i9-7980XE review

2075ab1cd26b452424d7ac6612cf6be4-730x430

Pricing

The 18-core Intel Core i9-7980XE might trump the 16-core AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X with two more cores, but it also costs twice as much at $1,999 (about £1,480, AU$2,510). That’s right, Intel’s newest chip costs two times as much AMD’s top competitor priced at $999 (£899, AU$1,449).

While paying the full cost of a DIY PC for a processor might seem absurd, Intel has tested the limits of users’ wallets since launching a $1,569 (£1,399, AU$1,723) 10-core Intel Core i7-6950X Broadwell-E part last year.

In light of Threadripper’s popularity, team blue happily committed to an 18-core desktop part not too dissimilar from its Xeon range of server products. But unlike Threadripper, you won’t have to worry about switching to legacy or gaming modes; you get all the glitz, glamour and fuss-less functionality of Intel’s desktop components.

How to Download and Install macOS High Sierra

Apple released the latest edition of macOS, version 10.13 High Sierra, so it’s time to prepare your Mac for the update. High Sierra may be a relatively subtle update, performing a lot of changes to the background that will increase stability, but it also provides new privacy features in Safari and makes Photos a more easily browsable app.

image 3180701506443487

First, make sure your Mac is on this list of supported machines:

  • MacBook (Late 2009 and later)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid 2010 and later)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2010 and later)

Next, check that the software you rely upon is supported by visiting the website of any company that makes your mission-critical apps. This is a big deal for antivirus software and system-backup utilities, as they operate differently, and might conflict with the new Apple File System (APFS).

Now, back up your system to another location. There is nothing inherently risky about High Sierra, but we make a habit of backing up our personal systems before performing major updates.

Basic Home Theater AV Set Up Guide – Hooking It All Up

So, you bought a home theater system? Great! Watching a movie on a properly set up surround sound system, or listening to your music through a new set of speakers can be an amazing experience. But, the key to a great home theater isn’t just spending a lot of money. Setting up the system correctly is just as important as what you buy. This guide, very simply, walks through the basics of speaker placement, how to hook everything up, and how to change a few settings to really make your system shine. Throughout this article are links to other articles that go into more depth on each topic. Be sure to also check out our related YouTube video discussions linked below for further insights.

Where Do I Place My Speakers?

In most rooms you won’t be able to place your speakers in the perfect spots. It would be great if every room was designed with surround sound in mind, but alas, it isn’t. Still, there are some good rules to go by. The diagram below shows the ideal placement for speakers in a 7.1 system. Notice how the speakers are perfectly set up for one seating location, the elusive “sweet spot”.

Seat Arona vs Seat Ateca – which SUV is best?

The Seat Arona is a small SUV that will go on sale later this year, priced from around £15,000. We take a look at how it compares with the bigger Seat Ateca

*** Note : £1 =$1.30

Until last year, the closest Seat had come to building an SUV was the Altea Freetrack – a car that was little more than a jacked-up people carrier fitted with ugly unpainted bumpers.

However, when the Spanish brand did finally take the plunge, it gave us the class-leading Ateca. And now it’s following that up with a second SUV, called the Arona.

Named after a municipality on the island of Tenerife, this new car is smaller than the Ateca, using the platform of the latest Ibiza hatchback. So, while the Ateca is a rival to the Nissan Qashqai, the Arona will compete with the likes of the Nissan Juke, Peugeot 2008 and Renault Captur.

Just how different are these two Seat SUVs, though? To find out, we’re comparing Arona and Ateca side by side.

iPhone 8 Plus vs Galaxy Note 8: Why Samsung Wins

The Galaxy Note 8 has all the makings of the ultimate big-screen phone, with its gorgeous 6.3-inch screen, S Pen and new dual cameras. But the iPhone 8 Plus is a formidable phablet, too, offering Apple’s powerful new A11 Bionic processor, improved dual cameras and (finally) wireless charging.

Starting at $930, the Note 8 is significantly more expensive than the $799 iPhone 8 Plus. But is the iPhone the better choice? We’re here to crown a winner.

Editors’ Note: The $999 iPhone X is coming soon, and we’ll be doing a separate face-off between that phone and the Note 8 when it arrives.

Design

This round is no contest. Just look at these two phones. While the iPhone is essentially a refreshed version of what came last year, complete with chunky bezels, the Note 8 is one of the sexiest phones you can buy. It’s Infinity Display stretches nearly edge to edge, and it curves as it meets the side.

Lenovo ThinkCentre M910z Review: An Affordable All-in-One for Work

The Lenovo ThinkCentre M910z ($809 to start, $1,285 as reviewed) is an all-in-one PC for the workplace, a realm that Lenovo knows well. The desktop packs all sorts of business-friendly features, from tool-free maintenance access to security features that protect your private data, but you’ll find better performance and display quality elsewhere.

Design

Unlike the aluminum chassis of the Asus Zen AiO Pro Z240IE and other premium all-in-ones, the ThinkCentre M910z is made primarily of ABS plastic. The plastic construction helps keep the cost down, and the near-black color scheme will still look good on your desk whether it’s in a boring cubicle or the corner office. And while it may not be the sleekest-looking all-in-one we’ve seen, the design may be the most versatile of any we’ve reviewed.

Zvox SB380 review

How much should you spend on a sound bar? In the last couple years the sweet spot between sound quality and value has been about $300, and that’s exactly where the Zvox SB380 sits.

Zvox’s sound bars have been consistently well-built and belt out a lot of sound from a compact box. Its specialty is enhancing dialog, making it easier to hear the actors’ voices — as opposed to sound effects — in TV shows and movies. The SB380 continues that trend and adds good looks and solid overall sound.

Unfortunately for Zvox, “solid” is no longer sufficient. The new budget superstar, the Vizio SB3621, easily eclipses the Zvox in sound quality and costs half as much. So does the Yamaha YAS-106, which just like the Zvox doesn’t have a separate subwoofer.

If you really crave clearer-sounding dialog in TV shows and movies, the Zvox SB380 is still worthy of consideration. But also consider the cheaper SB400, which includes Bluetooth and should sound very similar.

Switchmate Bright Review: No-tool smart light upgrade needs work

switchmate-bright-review-10-1280x720

Sometimes the smart home doesn’t feel very welcoming to those of us who rent, rather than own, where they live, but Switchmate wants to change all that. After its cleverly-simple first generation Bluetooth light switch upgrade comes this, the Switchmate Bright, throwing in more flexibility as well as a streamlined update to the magnetic mounting system. At $35 the promise is instant smart lighting, but does reality live up to that?

Switchmate Bright addresses most of the lingering complaints I had about the first-generation model. Most conspicuous is that it’s significantly narrower: that means you can fit two or more side-by-side on double- or triple-gang switch plates. As before there are versions for toggle or plate style switches, but now the button is touch-sensitive rather than a physical pad.

Fitbit Ionic v Apple Watch Series 3: The fitness smartwatch brawl

Which one wins the day?

We have finally seen and played with Fitbit’s long-rumoured smartwatch, the Ionic, and it was inevitable that comparisons would quickly be made with the current king of the smartwatch game, the Apple Watch. Now, with the Apple Watch Series 3 having just landed, how do the two compare?

The Blaze used to be Fitbit’s best bet against Apple’s smartwatch, though it couldn’t truly measure up in all categories. But now? Now Fitbit has NFC payments, built-in GPS, music and apps. It’s also waterproof and, well, is much more of a fully-featured smartwatch.

Fitbit Ionic v Apple Watch Series 3

As for Apple, it’s bringing LTE in its new smartwatch, something you won’t find in the Ionic – but does it matter? You can also pick up Apple’s latest without the cellular extra, which is, for the most part, just the Apple Watch Series 2.

2018 Mercedes-AMG GT First Drive Review: Porsche’s nightmare

In any up-and-coming professional’s life, there’s a moment where a pressing decision must be made: is it time to buy a Porsche 911? Virtually a uniform for flaunting success at almost any age, the 911 has become synonymous with inconspicuous conspicuous consumption, the acceptable way to flaunt status and cash without making your employees feel too terrible on the morning walk into the office.

2018 Mercedes-AMG GT First Drive: Porsche’s nightmare

A recent challenger, however, is making a strong bid for those same three-piece hearts and minds – and it’s doing it with more flair and gusto than one would expect from the Silver Star’s upper echelons. The Mercedes-AMG GT line-up might only be a few years old, but the continual addition of new stable-mates and its ability to push the boundaries of high performance in a way formerly reserved for pricy near-exotics illustrates a change in focus for the luxury brand that should pay off in any automaker’s favorite type of vehicle sale: conquest.

macOS High Sierra Review

Kết quả hình ảnh cho macOS High Sierra

Apple’s new macOS 10.13 High Sierra isn’t designed to grab headlines, and that’s why it’s my favorite kind of Apple OS update. So far, it’s felt like a rock-solid update, one that made changes behind the scenes so that your day-to-day operations feel more stable and secure. It reminds me of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, which Apple famously touted as introducing “zero new features.”

High Sierra does indeed offer new features, many of which are well executed. These include a redesigned Photos app that’s easier to use, a Safari browser that’s super-fast and more mindful of your privacy and a smarter Mail app. But it’s the behind-the-scenes improvements that will make you want to upgrade.

Major, and Unseen, Improvements

The most important update in High Sierra is Apple File System (APFS), the operating system’s new way of managing and organizing all of your data. This is not to be confused with a file browser, such as the Finder or Windows Explorer.

How to Place Your Speakers to Maximize Your Home Theater Experience

Whether you are setting up your computer speakers or a complex home theater bundle, understanding the art and science of speaker channels and placement is the most critical step in enjoying your new sound system. Read on as we guide you through a crash course in surround sound setup.

2013-02-13_120508

Why Should I Care?

The other day a friend of ours was showing us his new HDTV setup and new speakers. While he had researched his HDTV purchase tirelessly, he hadn’t put much thought into the speaker setup. When it came time to set up the speakers he had purchased to go with the TV he simply plugged them in and set them all on the shelf under his new TV. The only way for that setup to be less optimal would be if the speakers were inside a nearby closet.

There is an enormous amount of energy invested in giving you a great home theater and listening experience. Everyone from speaker designers to audio engineers to foley grips—the people who add sound effects into movies—have all contributed to recreating realistic and enjoyable sound in your home.

6 Best Features of the Vivo X20 and X20 Plus

A few days ago, Vivo unveiled two new smartphones in China, sporting 6-inch 18:9 displays, Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processors, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, and Android Nougat – the Vivo X20 and Vivo X20 Plus. But what else do these phones have to offer? Find out below.

6.01″ & 6.43″ 18:9 displays

Like the Vivo V7+ that recently launched in the Philippines, the Vivo X20 and X20 Plus feature a slim bezel design with an 18:9 aspect ratio display. While the V7+ features a 5.99″ screen size and low HD resolution, the X20 and X20 Plus sports a larger 6.01″ and 6.43″ Super AMOLED screens, respectively. What’s good about this is Vivo used a higher resolution at 2160 x 1080, giving us a good pixel density of 402ppi for the X20 and 376ppi for the X20 Plus, which is an indication that it’s good for watching videos, viewing photos, and gaming.

2018 MG 6 revealed

A new-generation 2018 MG 6 has been revealed today, debuting as a replacement for the now eight-year-old first-generation model sold here as the MG 6 Plus.

The company has yet to release full details on the new model – or a full gallery – and it has likewise yet to confirm Australian details, although a brief quote from the company’s local arm today suggests we’ll see it here next year.

Taking its cues from the E-Motion coupe concept revealed earlier this year, the new MG 6 adds an extra pair of doors and a taller roofline to match.

Front-end styling shows an obvious connection to both the E-Motion concept and the new ZS SUV, marking another step away from the look worn by the brand’s current models, towards a design reminiscent of Mazda and Mercedes-Benz styling.

Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Review

Tamron 24 70mm G2 Front Oblique View

From the range of SP (Super Performance) full frame lenses from Tamron, the new 24-70mm f/2.8 G2 is a wide to short telephoto standard zoom with a bright (fast) constant aperture. The new lens is reviewed here using the 50MP Canon EOS 5DS R. Let’s see what the new lens has to offer and how well it performs and handles.

Handling and Features

At 905g (Canon fit) or 900g (Nikon fit) the lens is hefty, but it does balance well on the Canon 5DS R used for the review. There is a provided petal lens hood, complete with locking catch for extra security. This surrounds an 82mm filter thread. Immediately behind this is a generously sized zoom ring, clearly marked with various focal lengths. A locking switch operates at 24mm to ensure the lens does not extend during carrying. There is no real tendency for this to happen whilst the lens is new, but perhaps with use, it will prove a useful feature.

Edwards Audio TT2SE / Goldring 1042 review

It’s not often we open a review on a sour note, but it is worth us qualifying early on why this turntable is receiving three stars rather than the four its performance really deserves.

The spindle

It all rests on the spindle. Or, perhaps more correctly, it doesn’t. As our testing gets more in-depth, we find more and more of our records that won’t fit over it. By the time the dust clears, just over half of the 60-plus records we want to listen to won’t go on – the spindle is simply too thick.

It isn’t by any means an insurmountable issue for Edwards Audio to address – and when the company does so we will very happily reconsider our rating to reflect the TT2SE’s admirable sonic performance without caveats.

Until then, we can’t truly recommend a turntable unable to play a significant chunk of our record library.

2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk review

2017 Jeep® Grand Cherokee Trailhawk

Having enjoyed first the surprisingly capable Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk and then the Jeep Renegade Trailhawk, I set my bar high for the big-boy Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. Fortunately, the largest Jeep SUV largely met my expectations — even as this review came hot on the heels of weeks spent in the Land Rover Discovery and BMW X5.

Those vehicles are perhaps a bit more high-brow than the rugged Trailhawk with its bright red tow hooks and aggressive hood graphics, but the Jeep proved capable, comfortable and surprisingly high-tech for a toy you’re meant to get dirty. Overall, I was left with the impression that the Trailhawk wasn’t just a beefy 4×4 that can throw mud with the best of ’em, but also a balanced SUV that’s just a capable on the commute.

Budget “Gaming” Smartphones Showdown: Samsung Galaxy J7 Core vs OPPO A71

Both are good buys for the budget-minded smartphone user

The Samsung Galaxy J7 Core and OPPO A71 — both marketed as speedy budget phones, were launched on the same day a few weeks ago. Now that we got our hands on both phones, let us do a quick physical comparison.

On the first impression, the Galaxy J7 Core is clearly bigger than the A71 as it sports a 5.5-inch display (compared to the 5.2-inch panel found on the A71).

As the J7 Core is bigger, this also makes the phone wider compared to the A71. To make up for the size, the J7 Core has a recessed top and bottom (you’ll notice the corners protruding here in the photo), making it easy to grip in times where you play games, watch videos, or take photos in landscape mode.

SNES Classic vs NES Classic: Which Retro Console Is For You?

Nintendo’s coveted SNES Classic Edition is launching very soon, and its previous mini retro console, the NES Classic Edition, is coming back next year after months of selling out.

What’s a NES? What’s a SNES?

The NES, or Nintendo Entertainment System, was Nintendo’s first home console, which launched in 1985. The SNES, or Super Nintendo Entertainment System, released in 1990 with improved graphics.

The Classic Editions are miniaturized versions of these systems, each with a set number of pre-installed games that you can’t add to.

Which has better games?

Ah, the most important question. The NES Classic Edition includes 30 games, (you can find the full list here) including Super Mario Bros., Castlevania, Metroid, and The Legend of Zelda. The SNES Classic Edition has 21 games, (full list here), with heavy hitters like Earthbound, Super Metroid, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and the previously unreleased Star Fox 2.
