HP Pavilion x360 2-in-1 (11-inch) Review

The HP Pavilion x360 is an 11-inch laptop that gives you 2-in-1 capability for just $399.99. The Pavilion borrows several design elements from the premium HP Spectre x360, but scales back the premium features with plastic construction and less-expensive hardware. It puts a lot of fancy features into an affordable price range, but you will give up some niceties like speedy performance and a long-lasting battery.

Design

The Pavilion x360 is a convertible hybrid, with a 360-degree hinge so you can use the machine as either a laptop or tablet. Whereas the Spectre x360 uses an intricate geared hinge design for smooth, synchronized opening, the Pavilion x360 has a more basic hinge design, but the functionality ends up the same.

Acer Aspire 5 (A515-51G-52R1) Review

Whereas most affordable laptops want to nickle and dime you on higher-end specs, Acer seems to be giving away the farm. Priced at $599, the Acer Aspire 5 (A515-51G-52R1) is loaded with goodies including a 1080p screen and a solid state drive, which is a rarity at this price. The laptop also has discrete Nvidia graphics, a solid Core i5 performance, an attractive design and a wide variety of ports. Best of all, you can upgrade some components for even better performance. The battery life, however, could be better

Design: Sleek

Simply put, the Aspire 5 is an attractive laptop, outfitted with an obsidian-black plastic shell that features sleek vertical lines and a faux-brushed-aluminum deck. Acer’s laptop also has stylish metallic accents that give it a futuristic feel. Silver Acer logos can be found on the laptop’s lid and bottom bezel. Matching silver borders line the edges of the Aspire 5’s deck and touchpad, while a matte chrome hinge with the word “Aspire” engraved into it holds the laptop together.

2017 Mazda CX-3 2.0 Skyativ-G 120 GT Sport First ride review – price, specs and release date

The Mazda CX-3 gets a new limited-edition range-topping model, but is it worth the premium it commands?

Having been on sale for two years now, the Mazda CX-3 range has been given a light update to keep it fresh. Among the subtle changes is a new limited-edition range-topping model that we’re driving here, the GT Sport.

Despite what the moniker might suggest, this model is really an exercise in appealing to the booming market of buyers after style-focused small SUVs rather than high-performance variants.

That means the updates include sportier exterior styling, 18in wheels and a nappa leather trim inside, rather than any mechanical performance upgrades. It’s only available with Mazda’s 2.0-litre 118bhp petrol engine and front-wheel drive, but there’s a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmission. With only 500 going on sale, should you be rushing to a Mazda dealer to buy one?

No matter what digital camera you shoot with nowadays, you must have some kind of storage where your media is going to be saved to. While some devices like phones and tablets often come with some built-in memory, you will often find yourself looking for ways to expand that storage by using memory cards or other external storage accessories.

Creoqode 2048 review

The Creoqode 2048 is a unique bit of kit is an exciting handheld games console that can help people learn to code by programming simple games. It’s a device that you build yourself, and the name comes from the number of RGB LEDs that are used to form the 64 x 32 resolution screen.

The Creoqode 2048 costs $246 (about £189, AU$312), and it emerged from a successful crowdfunding campaign in 2016 that raised more than £20,000/$30,000 for the London-based company.

Getting started

The Creoqode arrives in a smart box, with all of its components ready to go and the required tools included – plus it requires no soldering.

The Mini Mega Development Board and rechargable battery attach using small screws to a couple of clear plastic mounts, and these are secured to the rear of the front panel using some chunky risers.

Apple Watch: Activity and Workout app explored and explained

We explore the Apple Watch’s fitness offerings in depth

While the original Apple Watch was somewhat of a letdown, especially for fitness fans, the Apple Watch Series 2 really upped its sports tracking game.

Instead of a relatively hollow chamber occupying our wrist-space, Apple’s second generation brought GPS tracking and waterproofing to the table. But it’s the Activity and Workout apps that are still a staple of your daily exercise.

Apple Watch fitness guide

That’s not to say it’s all perfect — issues still remain in software regardless of which Apple Watch model you’re rocking — but below is a guide to help you get to grips with what’s available right now and what’s coming in watchOS 4.

Nokia 8 Camera Review: Is the Dual Sight a solid smartphone shooter?

Nokia and Carl Zeiss have teamed up to create the Dual Sight camera found on the Nokia 8, complete with a double-lens layout and the new ‘bothie’ mode. Our in-depth Nokia 8 camera review fully tests out this snapper, to see how good it is for photo and video capture.

Nokia’s first Android flagship phone has raised a lot of interest, especially as it’s the first premium phone released by the brand in quite some time. Of course, one of the more enticing features of the Nokia 8 is that dual-lens camera housed on the back, another first for the brand and seemingly a strong rival to the double-snappers found on the OnePlus 5, Huawei P10 and various other handsets.

For this camera review we’ve spent a couple of days shooting loads of photos and video with the Nokia 8. Here’s our full take on the camera experience, image quality and everything else you need to know if you’re considering a purchase.

Divoom Timebox Review: You’ve Never Seen a Bluetooth Speaker Like This

Divoom Timebox Review: Divoom Timebox Image 01

When I first received the Divoom Timebox, I have to admit I was pretty excited to review it.

Whilst most Bluetooth speakers seem to offer the same set of features such as 3.5mm Aux in or a rugged design, the Divoom Timebox is one of the first Bluetooth speakers I’ve come across that tries to do something different.

Coming in at around $50, the Divoom Timebox is a smart Bluetooth speaker that can do far more than just listen to music using its 5W speaker.

Thanks to its 11×11 pixel display featuring 121 RGB LEDs, the speaker can display images, playing games and more using the dedicated Timebox app. This is in addition to an impressive range of features including the weather, notifications, games and even a built-in messaging service.

A history of Android versions: From Cupcake to Android Oreo

Google’s Android OS is a decade old and appears on hundreds of new devices every year, from phones and tablets to TV streamers and beyond. Here’s a complete history of the Android operating system, all the way up to Android Oreo in 2017.

The main rival to Apple’s own iOS platform is Google Android OS. Android is a fully-fledged operating system that’s broken free of its smartphone roots, now appearing on tablets, TV streamers and plenty of other devices. In the ten years of its life, Android has evolved a huge amount – for instance, did you know it was originally conceived to be used on cameras, rather than mobiles?

Here’s a history of Android and its various versions, which are now named alphabetically after sweet treats.

Android 1.0

Android was originally conceived as a touch interface for cameras, before Google saw its potential and pulled out its cheque book. The first commercially available version of Android for mobile phones was released in September 2008, on the HTC Dream handset. The candy-flavoured names were yet to be introduced, so this version was imaginatively titled Android 1.0.

2017 Subaru XV 2.0i v Mazda CX-3 sTouring AWD comparison

There’s no doubt whatsoever that the small SUV segment is the hottest battle ground in Australia right now – certainly in terms of the market volume that is rushing to it in large numbers.

Some manufacturers are so enamoured with the concept, they even have two entrants in the segment – think Audi Q2 and Q3 for example, which effectively sit in very similar parts of the market even though the marketing blurb will claim otherwise.

2017 Subaru XV 2.0i v Mazda CX-3 sTouring AWD comparison

Vehicles that effectively amount to high-riding city hatchbacks with obligatory black plastic cladding added to toughen them up, are now so unashamedly city-focused, manufacturers increasingly offer them in 2WD guise only. Regular CarAdvice readers will know how I feel about anything that purports to be an ‘SUV’ but is in fact 2WD. Thankfully, there’s no such malarkey here, then.

Lined up and staged for this small SUV tussle, we’ve selected the Mazda CX-3 sTouring and Subaru XV 2.0i – both AWD, and both petrol. Firm crowd favourite and relative newcomer in the shape of the Mazda; all-new but with decades of SUV heritage in the case of the Subaru – this could be tougher than it might first appear.

Android Oreo Beta Review: The new features tried and tested

We’ve spent many weeks living with the Android Oreo beta and so far version 8.0 of Google’s mobile OS certainly impresses. Here’s our hands-on review and our run-down of the biggest new features in Oreo.

Android Oreo is now in its second beta form, available for developers and the curious to test out on their Google-branded smartphones. While the latest version of the Android mobile OS is still far from complete, not to mention without an official title (Oreo for the win?), we couldn’t resist downloading the beta to try it out for ourselves.

Here’s our review of the Android Oreo beta after almost a week of play time on the Google Pixel phone, including a run-down of some of the best new features and what’s changed compared with Nougat. LG Q6 Review

LG used to create a mini variant of their flagship G-series smartphone. They had it with the LG G2 Mini, the LG G3 Beat, LG G4 Beat. They skipped it with the modular LG G5.

LG G6+, LG G6, LG Q6

This year, LG is somewhat bringing back the mini. They were even reports of a 5.4-inch LG G6 Mini a few months back. From the looks of it, the LG Q6 is perhaps the unofficial LG G6 Mini this year.

Design and Construction

From all intents and purposes, the LG Q6 is a slightly smaller version of the LG G6 — from the all-metal unibody design (uses the same Series 7000 aluminum) to the FullVision glass display at the front. Of course, not all is the same. Some major features were shaved off on the Q6, one of which is the fingerprint scanner at the back.

Anker SoundCore 2 review

Lid9ubRZJPCcKNDuwS8PzR-1200-80

While your phone’s speaker may be good enough to play your music on the go, they’re far from the ideal solution. Their sound doesn’t carry far and as far as frequency range is concerned, phones typically fail to impress.

Thankfully, Bluetooth speakers are cheap and rugged enough now that anyone can afford to upgrade their sound without breaking the bank. Take, for example, the Anker SoundCore 2, an affordable, durable Bluetooth speaker that proves you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get robust-sounding audio.

For around $50 (£46, about AU$63), the SoundCore 2 gives you a staggering 24 hours of battery life, a ruggedized and water resistant body, and much better sound than your phone’s speaker. While it doesn’t quite hold against other speakers in the category in terms of audio performance, the Anker SoundCore 2 is still an incredible value for the price.

Cambridge Soundworks Oontz Angle 3 Plus review

OontZ_Angle_by_Cambridge_SoundWorks_BluetoothSpeaker_35792500_35792451_35792480_35792498_35792499_07

Last time we reviewed an Oontz was a few years back when Cambridge Soundworks’ original no-frills “value” Bluetooth speakers first hit Amazon. The Oontz Angle 3 Plus is technically the fourth generation of Oontz, and continues the brand’s tradition of delivering good sound for the price. In fact, you could say very good sound for the price.

The speaker, which can be stood up vertically or laid down horizontally, isn’t going to win any design awards but it’s functionally attractive. More importantly, it costs only $35 on Amazon. What’s impressive about is that it manages to play pretty loudly with decent clarity and strong bass performance for its size. Sound-wise, it’s in the same league as speakers like the JBL Flip 4and UE Wonderboom that cost around $100.

2017 Ford C-Max Hybrid review

265658

I circled the San Francisco Bay and drove to the coast, but the fuel gauge in the 2017 Ford C-Max hybrid barely budged. It moved as slow as the wall clock in calculus class.

As I felt the well-tuned driving dynamics from behind the wheel, and surveyed the large cargo area in back, I thought how it’s a shame Ford couldn’t sell more than 20,000 last year, less than a fifth of Toyota Prius sales.

Then again, the odd body style of the C-Max makes it a challenge to focus on, like the Somebody Else’s Problem field described by Douglas Adams in the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series. Maybe Ford needs to take a page from Toyota’s design book and give the C-Max outrageous styling to force people to look.

Optoma NuForce BE2 Earbuds Review: Premium quality with budget cost

main_be2-980x620

Last week, company Optoma launched a new pair of earbuds called the NuForce BE2. The earbuds were hawked as a premium product with a less-than-premium $49 price tag, seemingly offering the best of both worlds. On paper, at least, there’s a lot to like about this model: water-resistance, AAC audio support, a 10-hour battery life, wireless functionality, and more. Does it live up to those promises in the real-world, though?

Build quality

The NuForce BE2 is a wireless model that connects to your preferred streaming device over Bluetooth. Unlike some other earbuds, which feature a plastic neckband packing all of the important hardware bits, the BE2 feature all of the elements within the ear pieces themselves, leaving only a cable tether with in-line remote between them.

Denon AVR-X2400H vs Sony STR-DN1080 vs Yamaha RX-V583 – which is better?

Every year, the battle of the £500/$750 AV receivers is one of the most nail-biting categories we examine. We’ve not even seen all of this year’s AV receivers yet, but already it’s a fearsomely contested fight.

With all three receivers on test sporting very similar features (from 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos to multi-room and hi-res streaming), it’s audio performance that will make all the difference here.

There can only be one winner. Let’s find out who it is.

Helio X25 (+Mali-T880) vs Snapdragon 650 (+Adreno 510) vs Snapdragon 820 (+Adreno 530) – performance, benchmarks and temperatures

Two of the leading mobile processor manufacturers – MediaTek and Qualcomm, are facing each other again today. In our case, we will put to tests Helio X25, Snapdragon 650 and Snapdragon 820 chips with the help of Meizu Pro 6, Sony Xperia X and ZTE Axon 7 respectively. We would like to first have a look at their specifications and then juxtapose their results from various benchmarks, and conclude with surface overheating tests.

Helio X25 is a MediaTek mobile chip, which can be found in the smartphone Meizu Pro 6. It is manufactured through a 20nm technological process. The mobile processor has 10 cores, which are arranged in three groups – the first group is engaged in lighter tasks, and if needed, the other cores are employed as well. It features two powerful Cortex-A72 cores, running at up to 2.5GHz, four Cortex-A53 cores ticking at up to 2.00GHz and another four not so demanding Cortex-A53 cores with an operating frequency of up to 1.4GHz.

2018 BMW M5 revealed – prices, specs and release date

If you’re looking for a new sports saloon, the latest BMW 5 Series is very good place to start. It is, after all, our 2017 Car of the Year, scored a full five stars in our road test, and has seen off competition from Jaguar and Mercedes in group tests.

What if you’re looking for more power than the regular car offers, though? Specifically, what if you’re looking for something which can give the Jaguar XF S, Audi RS7 and Mercedes-AMG E63 a serious run for their money? Well, that’s where this new BMW M5 comes in.

BMW M5 features

Perhaps the biggest change with this sixth-generation M5 is a move to four-wheel drive. The new system, dubbed M xDrive, should result in more traction out of corners and improved acceleration away from a standstill.

Hands on: SNES Classic Mini review

Have any questions about the new console? We’ll be hosting a live Q&A later today, so come along if you’d like to ask us about the SNES Classic Mini, or just discuss your favorite games.

The NES Mini was one of 2016’s most pleasant surprises. The miniature console, which contained 30 games from Nintendo’s first console, quickly sold out worldwide before eventually being discontinued by Nintendo well before its prime.

The SNES Mini (or, to use its full name, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Nintendo Classic Mini) is, on the face of it, an almost identical product to its predecessor save the fact that it’s based on the SNES rather than the NES.

The 10 slowest-depreciating cars of 2017

Want your next car to hold on to as much of its value as possible? You’ll need to buy one of these

When you buy a new car, you’re not likely to think about depreciation. However, it’s one of the biggest costs of owning a vehicle, and is often more than your fuel, tax and servicing costs combined.

A car loses a large portion of its value of the first few years of ownership, so finding one which will keep its value the longest will ensure you get most of your money back when it comes to selling on.

Here, we’ve used our residual value data to show you the cars which will cost you the least in depreciation. All of our figures are based on you driving 12,000 miles per year.

MacBook Pro with Touch Bar (13-inch, Mid-2017) review

If you were hoping for refinement out of 2017’s off-schedule MacBook Pro refresh, then you’re in luck. However, if you were hoping for this year to hold some sort of redemption tour for last year’s divisive MacBook Pro release, you likely won’t find many words of comfort here.

This is the mid-2017, 13.3-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. Year on year, the new model doesn’t change much about the product short of a processor update as well as an increase in RAM speed.

As far as a needed update goes, the latest MacBook Pro ticks many of the right boxes while sticking to its guns on schismatic design decisions, like ditching the SD card slot and keeping the display resolution the same. The result is an unsurprisingly beautiful and impressive laptop that’s well worth both your attention and scrutiny.

MGCool Explorer 2C Review: New Action Camera like GoPro or Sony 2017

We are used to the fact that there are action cameras like GoPro or Sony, which are quite zealously advertised by their developers, and other options with a smaller price tag and a smaller PR campaign.

That is, there are a lot of good enough cameras in the world, but no one really spoke about them and users who are not enlightened on this issue think that other producers are doing worse. The device called MGCool Explorer 2C is a vivid example of the fact that a company with a little-known name can quite adequately produce cameras with good characteristics, body and other details, and the price to set acceptable.

Jawbone Health Hub: What we know so far

Jawbone’s back, tell a friend

Jawbone is not dead. It’s living on but not in the wearable form it has adopted over the last few years. We’ve recently learned that Jawbone co-founder and CEO Hosain Rahman has founded a new company called Jawbone Health (or Health Hub) out of the remains of beloved-then-beleaguered fitness trackermaker Jawbone.

Jawbone Health Hub: What we know

It’s not actually been confirmed officially, aside from a few job adverts and a response to a rumour story, so expect some sort of quiet re-launch later this year or in 2018. Here’s what we know so far – actually, quite a lot.

Getting clinical

As the name suggests, it sounds like the new company will be more focused on medical-grade health tech, which take into account metrics like sleep and nutrition than basic lifestyle devices. Essentially, Fitbit won that battle and Jawbone – the consumer company – is going out of business so the execs are, finally, moving on to potentially bigger things.

Head-to-Head: LG Q6 VS Huawei GR5 2017

Let them fight!

Unbox is here to fulfill a recent request from some of our readers – a Head-to-Head battle involving LG’s newest mid-range FullVision darling, the LG Q6. Today, we’ll be pitting the Q6 against Huawei’s dual-camera darling, the GR5 2017. It’s a battle of media darlings, folks! Who’ll come up top? Let’s find out.

Core Hardware: A Case of Priorities

The Huawei GR5 2017 features a snappy, mid-range HiSilicon Kirin 655 chipset. The LG Q6 comes with a budget-tier Snapdragon 435. There’s no question that the GR5 2017 outplays the Q6 when it comes to processing power.

What the LG Q6 has over the GR5 2017 is its snazzy Full HD+ FullVision display. The Q6, with its 2160 x 1080 resolution and unique 18:9 aspect ratio, feels larger than the regular 5.5-inch phablet. In comparison, Huawei’s handset only has a vanilla-flavored Full HD IPS screen.

This is the 2018 BMW M5: Its AWD is super-clever

All hail the 2018 BMW M5, the sixth-generation of the iconic super-sedan, and the German automaker’s most cunning yet. Sure, the 2018 M5 isn’t short on power: its twin-turbo V8 is good for a heady 600 horsepower, along with 553 lb-ft. of torque, after all. No, what’s really clever is BMW‘s specially-prepared all-wheel drive.

Purists may scoff, but this first debut of AWD on an M5 sounds like it could offer the very best of all worlds. The M-customized xDrive system starts out in all-wheel drive mode when you first start the car up, complete with all the electronic Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) nannies activated. However, that’s where the fun starts.

Even in the default mode, the 2018 M5 is rear-wheel biased. Indeed, the front wheels are only given power when those at the rear aren’t able to put any more torque down effectively. A special transfer case splits torque front and rear, while an Active M Differential splits it between the rear wheels.
