LG 4K HDR choices for 2016 : G6, E6, C6 and B6 TVs compared

LG’s message in its 2015 televisions was about curved OLED, later releasing flat models to accompany the curved versions. With 2016, the message is still very much about OLED, Ultra HD and HDR, but guess what? The lead model moves to flat instead.

LG 4K HDR choices for 2016: G6, E6, C6 and B6 TVs compared

OLED is expensive to make but has always pushed the message of offering superior blacks and superior colours over its LCD competition. That’s down to the way that OLED can turn off each pixel to achieve absolute blacks, where LCD lights in sections. With LCD offering more affordable panels and increasingly proficient visuals with a range of enhanced dimming techniques, LG’s refinement of its OLED TVs continues.

All the LG OLED models for 2016 feature Ultra HD/4K, HDR, LG’s Perfect Black, Perfect Colour, Perfect Clarity and webOS.

2016 Yamaha FJR1300 – FIRST RIDE REVIEW

At one point during the press introduction for the 2016 Yamaha FJR1300, talk turned to how time flies. And how, as we get older, events that seem like just a few years ago in fact transpired a decade or more beforehand.

That’s sort of how it is with the FJR1300. It seems like “just the other day” overseas markets got the swoopy new sport-tourer while we had to wait. The FJR debuted in ’01 as an ’02 model but didn’t arrive on these shores until ’03. In ’04 it was upgraded with ABS, and the ’06 model year saw new styling plus the introduction of the AE auto-clutch version. There was another restyle along with the addition of throttle-by-wire in ’13, and then in ’14 came the ES version with electronically adjustable suspension.

Next Nexus (2016) : Release date, rumours and everything you need to know

Google’s Nexus programme gives birth to a pure Android smartphone every year, sometimes two, or perhaps a tablet. The idea behind the Nexus is to showcase Android in its purest form, away from the poking and prodding of manufacturer skins.

It’s given rise to some great devices over the past years, but in recent times, has seen some of the most competitive Android handsets offered up. Where manufacturer flagships are often fighting to be king of the spec sheet, Nexusdoesn’t always go toe-to-toe. There has often been compromises and we’ve see the exclusion of some features, like microSD card slots.

Importantly, the Nexus is the chance for Google to say “this is what Android is”. With 2016 well under way, we’re looking forward to the next Nexus, in a year that’s rumoured to be bringing some big changes.

Microsoft redefined the 2-in-1 with its Surface Pro, a machine that through four generations has achieved the perfect balance between power and portability.

Samsung then one-upped Microsoft in key areas with the Galaxy TabPro S. It’s a thinner 2-in-1 with a superior display technology and longer battery life. We called it “the premium Windows 10 device for travelers.”

Mazda MX-5 Old v New Comparison Review : First-generation NA v fourth-gen ND

[su_youtube url=”https://youtu.be/WduPKIjipJA”]

Whether you’re old enough to remember them or not, the 1980s were cool. Icons such as Madonna and Prince were at the height of their success and big hair wasn’t just acceptable, it was wholeheartedly encouraged. But on February 10, 1989, something particularly special happened: the Mazda MX-5 made its global debut at the Chicago motor show, giving birth to one of the world’s most successful nameplates ever.

The car that started it all was the first-generation NA Mazda MX-5. Launched locally in October 1989, the original MX-5 notched up 157 registrations by the end of its first month on sale. And the immaculate example pictured here, belonging to Nicholas Bodey from Victoria, is the 38th to have ever arrived.

Huawei P9 vs. Galaxy S7 : Even a Leica Can’t Beat Samsung

Smartphone makers are getting really serious about cameras, with Samsung setting the tone with its unique dual-pixel sensors on the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. Huawei is taking on Samsung by teaming up with famed camera maker Leica on the Huawei P9, offering dual cameras for refocusing on your shot after the fact.

Is Leica’s support (and co-engineering) enough to help Huawei steal Samsung’s crown as the camera-phone king? After putting the cameras on both phones through their paces, we believe the answer is a resounding no.

Toyota 86 vs Subaru BRZ Comparison Review

[su_youtube url=”https://youtu.be/GzHxqS34tp0″]

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito were easy. But is it possible to pick the difference between another set of twins, the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ?

That’s the question CarAdvice set to answer across a range of beautifully sunlit country roads.

Our BRZ test car is in silver while the 86 is in red – good colours, even if we would have preferred brand-signature hues of WR Blue for the Subaru and white for the Toyota.

As we stand in front of the two sports coupes before setting off, the front ends are clearly distinguished besides the company badges and despite the rest of the body being virtually identical.

Pictar camera grip uses sound waves to ‘DSLR your iPhone’

A camera grip that gives iPhone users ‘DSLR’ control, using sound-wave connectivity, could be on sale by Christmas if a crowdfunding project is successful.

Insert Pictar

The Pictar promises to put controls such as a two-stage shutter button, an exposure compensation wheel and a zoom ring, familiar to DSLR users, at their fingertips.

Powered by a 1/2 AA battery, the gadget features five external controls for key settings using ‘high-frequency dual-tone sound to activate the camera’, according to a spokesman at Miggo, its maker. The sound (18,500-20,000 khz) is inaudible to the human ear.

Odyssey Toys X-7 Microlite review : Sprightly microdrone lights up the night

[su_youtube url=”https://youtu.be/m4uuWCYbdhk”]

THE GOOD

The X-7 Microlite’s body design guards its propellers and its bright LEDs make it fun to fly in a dark room or at night. Does flips and rolls with a button press and is a pretty stable flyer.

THE BAD

Plastic body can crack when crashed. Doesn’t fly well outdoors in anything more than a light breeze. Flight time is about 7 minutes with a 90-minute charge time.

THE BOTTOM LINE

If you’re looking for a palm-size quad that’s a bit different than the rest, Odyssey Toys’ X-7 Microlite drone is a bright spot to add to your collection.

2016 Moto Guzzi V9 Bobber And V9 Roamer First Ride Review

In its 95th anniversary year, Moto Guzzi debuts a new platform called the V9. It’s an offshoot of the existing V7 but angling toward a cruiser style rather than the V7’s standard/roadster meme. The V9 Roamer version employs classic design elements and extensive brightwork, while the Bobber version (pictured above) uses matte finishes and a fat front tire to deliver an element of badassitude.

2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Willys Wheeler Review

It’s one of the most puzzling conundrums in the auto industry: how does an anachronism like the Jeep Wrangler rattle off ever-increasing sales numbers each and every year? By any rational measure, the Wrangler’s old school platform lags behind its SUV competitors by at least several generations, and yet each year hundreds of thousands of customers look past the clunky steering, rough ride, and wince-inducing fuel mileage to embrace its rugged image and drive one home from the dealership.

Fluance Fi70 Review : a massive, beautiful Bluetooth speaker

There are speakers, and then there are speakers. When I first saw a picture of Fluance’s Fi70 wireless speaker, it was on a pedestal and I imagined it to be something somewhat hefty but not enormous. I realized I was mistaken when a 100lbs box appeared on my front porch. Though officially referred to as a wireless speaker, the Fluance Fi70 is more appropriately described as a sound system aggregated together into a convenient, awfully heavy box. How does it sound? In one word: incredible.

HTC Sense 8.0 vs Sense 7.0 : New features tweaks and changes reviewed

The HTC 10 brings with it a new version of Sense that’s moved a fair distance from the experience on HTC’s previous flagship device, the HTC One M9, with a change in software emphasis.

We’ve been tracking the changes in Sense for a number of years, but the step to Sense 8.0 is perhaps one of the biggest. Not because it adds more, but because it changes less from the Android 6.0 Marshmallow core that it sits on.
