Audi sets track and economy records to make you love diesel

Audi may not have persuaded Americans that diesel isn’t the Devil’s fuel but you can’t accuse it of not trying, setting both economy and performance records in Europe. When it comes to speed, it’s the Audi RS5 TDI competition concept setting a record time for a diesel around the Sachsenring, its 435 HP engine powering the car to complete a 2.2 mile lap in 1 minute 35.35 seconds. That, Audi credits, is down to its unusual electric compressor.

Chris Evans is Top Gear’s “new” Jeremy Clarkson

Jeremy Clarkson’s replacement for wildly-popular BBC show Top Gear will be Chris Evans, the broadcaster has announced. Evans, who currently presents a BBC Radio 2 breakfast show but who has a long track-record of UK television shows, will begin filming in the next few weeks, the BBC says. Clarkson left the show amid controversy earlier this year, fired after a “fracas” with a producer while recording an episode. Co-hosts James May and Richard Hammond initially played coy as to whether they would return, though later confirmed that they too would leave the show.

Sony Xperia Z4v coming to America

Sony announces Xperia Z4v, a device destined in the United States for Verizon alone. This device is the next in line for Xperia devices after the Xpeira Z3 released in 2014. This device is the direct descendant of the Xperia Z3v, the uniquely Verizon-carried edition of the Z3 in the United States. This device has a 5.2-inch Full WQHD “Triluminos” display – that’s LED with Sony’s “X-Reality” technology, technology they suggest provides a “wider palette of rich, natural colors and enhanced color depth and gradation without risk of over saturation.”

OS X El Capitan Preview – Ahoy there, captain!

OS X El Capitan isn’t a big of an overhaul update as Yosemite, but there are plenty of new features and design elements that keep a smile on my face. There’s a lot to be said for “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it” and that’s exactly what Apple has done. In El Capitan, it’s all about performance and experience, and that could pay real dividends not only for power-users, but for mainstream users wanting to squeeze the most out of their Mac.

Ultimate Ears Roll Review – A kooky Bluetooth speaker

The world is not short on Bluetooth speakers, but Ultimate Ears believes it’s risen to the challenge with the new UE Roll. Smaller – not to mention circular – sibling to the UE Boom and Mega Boom, its boldly embroidered front and bungee-cord toting back may conspire to look casual, but there’s some serious thought behind it. I summoned my most enthusiastic playlist and took a listen.

Apple will have human editors running its News service

The big pitch for Beats 1 is that, rather than leaving the finding of new music to algorithms, humans will actively seek out and curate fresh tunes for our ears. Now we’ve learned that Apple will do the same thing for its Flipboard-style news aggregation service for iOS 9. 9to5Mac has unearthed a job advert confirming that Apple News will be run not by software, but by fleshy editors who will cherry-pick the most important stories to be delivered to your phones and tablets.

Razer recently launched its Open Source VR intiative, complete with a virtual reality headset to get more developers into the VR game. The IR system is included in the kit price, including the 100Mhz IR LED system and a camera that provides 360 degrees of position tracking. Previously, Razer included IR position tracking designs and templates, but didn’t supply the hardware.

Tesla’s Model 3 will sire an affordable EV range

Tesla’s new Model 3 EV will spawn a new sedan and crossover, the company has confirmed, as it readies its defenses against car industry stalwarts. The Model 3, expected to hit roads in 2017, will be the first car to use Tesla’s third-generation platform, intended to be more affordable than the current second-gen platform that the existing Model S is based upon.

Tesla chief technical officer JB Straubel discussed the follow-ups to the Model S at the the EIA Energy Conference in Washington D.C. today. While Straubel’s confirmation that Tesla is planning for cars “beyond” the Model 3 doesn’t really come much as a surprise, the exec nonetheless did begin to touch on how the firm might achieve founder Elon Musk’s ambitious sales goals.

The vast majority of people who purchase a Range Rover will never take the capable 4×4 vehicle off-road. In addition to a new slew of games being released over the past few days, NVIDIA SHIELD is about to get a kick in the Android TV software pants. The first – and perhaps most important to those actively using SHIELD today – is the addition of a low battery notification for the SHIELD Remote. Before today, power would just run out and you’d have to make a guess at why you weren’t turning the volume up automatically. The SHIELD Remote is getting a “snappier response” upgrade as well.

If you’re going to shoot professional-looking videos on your DSLR, you’ll need somewhat professional tools to help you do it. When it comes to camera dollies for shooting moving footage, it’s going to be hard to top this highly-portable Pocket Skater 2.

Made by Edelkrone, it’s a collapsible dolly that compacts to the size of portable Bluetooth speakers (2.1 x 5 x 1.8 inches), all while weighing just a single pound. Instagram Cleans up Its Website With Its Latest Design Overhaul

Missing many of the most important features of its mobile version, the Instagram website has often been seen more as a motivator to switch from your computer to your smartphone rather than an equal platform in functionality. With its latest update, Instagram has revamped the design of the website, removing the previously skeuomorphic design and the changing grid banner of images in favor of a simple header and borderless images arranged three across. These changes thus position the website as a photo viewer as opposed to the social network functionality of its mobile cousin, given the increasing numbers of creative professionals who use the platform as a portfolio of their work. Expect the design overhaul to be rolled out to all users by the end of the week.

Apple’s 2015 Design Awards Winners

The end of Apple‘s annual Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) also signals a slew of worthy applications that have been given the Apple stamp of approval with its Apple Design Award. Recognizing the best and most innovative iOS and OS X software, the awards are sometimes more of a marketing ploy for the tech behemoth than anything else, pushing its own products and programs. For example, this year’s award recipients seem to tick off several Apple-centered check boxes, such as having an Apple Watch app complement, using Metal on iOS (Apple’s graphic programming API), Force Touch Trackpad support and making innovative uses of in-app purchases. Despite the blatant self-promotion, there are noteworthy apps in the mix which are certainly deserving of the accolade.

We’ve seen 3D-printed clothing, cars and houses — and now Amsterdam is building an entire bridge from 3D-printed steel! Designed by MX3D and Joris Laarman, the revolutionary pedestrian bridge will be constructed by multi-axis industrial robots. In other architecture news, Dubai has given the green light for a fleet of floating luxury islands to be built in The World archipelago. One World Trade Center opened late last year — and now it looks like New York City’s tallest building is about to get a new neighbor. Last week, Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) unveiled a set of architectural renderings for Two World Trade Center, a 1,340-foot tower that will consist of a series of stacked boxes.
