Apple just saw its quarterly revenue fall year-over-year for the first time since 2003. It sold fewer iPhones than it did a year ago for the first time ever in that product’s history. And when the company reports numbers for the current quarter three months from now, it expects those numbers to dip again.
So is it time for Apple and its legion of fans to panic? Not exactly.
Certainly Apple’s fiscal second quarter was poor by any measure you care to use, and declining iPhone sales was a big part of that. Apple sold a little less than 51.2 million phones during the January-to-March quarter, compared to a little less than 61.2 million for the same period in 2015. A glance at that drop, coupled with the flat iPhone sales growth Apple saw during the holiday quarter, would suggest that 10 years in, our love affair with the iPhone may be over.

Affordable smartphones with specs that don’t just scratch the spec sheet surface – those have been getting quite popular, and Lenovo is keen on being a part of it with the Vibe K5 Plus.
A 5-inch Full-HD screen, last year’s top-selling midrange chipset rehashed for 2016, 2GB of RAM, a 13MP camera, dual-SIM connectivity, and a dedicated microSD slot sound like Lenovo’s been paying attention to what’s in demand. Certainly not going to shake up the Galaxy S7, but at around $130, it’s a whole different piece of the pie the Vibe K5 Plus is after.
First things first though – that name call for a little clarification. The K5 family consists of three models so far, the plain Vibe K5, the Vibe K5 Plus we have here, and the Vibe K5 Note. While some makers use the Plus to identify a larger screen, here it denotes the Full-HD resolution as opposed to the regular K5’s 720p, and a Snapdragon 616 instead of a Snapdragon 415. The major releases for the first half of 2016 are out, time to see what’s worth spending your hard earned cash on. For all the flagship goodness we saw at the MWC (and other events), there’s an equal measure of amazing entry-level and midrange handsets out there.
And we don’t use “amazing” lightly here, the €200-€300 phones offer metal unibodies, capable cameras, fast chipsets, large batteries, the works. You can even get a metal-clad phone at just over €100 – some smart shopping can get you a quality gadget even if you’re on a shoestring.
That’s the point of this article, to set you on the right track, point to what’s good out there and warn against some potential bad choices.
These days there are only two things where you really have to spend more to get more – screen and camera. The €600+ flagships have eye-popping screens with perfect color rendering, excellent sunlight legibility and goodies like Always On mode.
They also have cameras that handle different types of photography well enough that you can leave your digital camera at home and focus on the moment instead of settings and dials.

Designed by Gordon Murray (yes, the guy who designed the McLaren F1), this cute-looking automobile neither drives itself nor runs on an electric powertrain.
