Hands on: Archos Diamond review

Shows like MWC are great because all the smaller phone manufacturers, like Archos, get a platform to show off their newest models – the Archos Diamond is one of these devices.

It’s an affordable smartphone from the French electronics company, but it’s thin and sleek like a high-end device. With a dual-lens camera setup and some novel features, it’s an intriguing device – we got hands-on with it to see how it runs.

Hands on: Huawei MateBook X Pro (2019) review

During MWC 2019 in Barcelona, Spain, Huawei has pulled the curtain back on a brand new version of MateBook X Pro laptop with updated parts inside.

Essentially speaking, this update is a simple configuration refresh, with minor improvements to the laptop’s processor and graphics options as well as new Thunderbolt 3 support. It seems Huawei hopes to build on the critical acclaim its previous laptops have garnered by doubling down on its winning design.

Hands-on: LG G8S ThinQ review

The LG G8S ThinQ is the subtly adapted, cheaper version of the South Korean firm’s new flagship Android phone – the LG G8 ThinQ – both of which were launched at MWC 2019.

LG has chosen the odd route of creating a slightly lesser version of its handset to provide it with more flexibility in markets around the world. Some countries will get the G8, others the LG G8S, depending on which device the firm believes best suits a particular market.

Philips Brilliance 499P9H review

It takes a lot to turn heads at TechRadar Towers. When it comes to technology, frankly, we’ve seen it all before. But the new Philips Brilliance 499P9H ultrawide monitor pretty much brings the office to a standstill. It’s that dramatic.

Question is, are the goggling onlookers impressed, amused or even horrified by the 499P9H’s 49 inches of insanely wide-aspect LCD panel? Answer: There was plenty of laughing but also some serious consideration of this exceptional PC monitor as a practical proposition.

Google and Volvo helped Polestar craft its answer to the Tesla Model 3

Polestar — the performance-oriented luxury brand recently created by Volvo parent company Geely — unveiled its second and most significant model online. It named its first car 1, so few will be surprised to learn that its second car is called 2. Luckily, this battery-powered sedan is shaping up to be much more captivating than its unimaginative name suggests.

3 obstacles that folding phones like the Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X need to overcome

The next big things could have next big problems

In just a few months, the first folding phones will be available for sale, and if you have a couple thousand dollars burning a hole in your pocket, you can buy one for your very own. But while those first few buyers will be the talk of the town, the Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X might not be as top-of-the-line as their price tags would suggest.

While they certainly represent an advancement in overall smartphone technology and an exciting new direction for the future, in some ways, folding phones are a step backward from the premium phone we’re used to using. Here are three areas of concern I have as the folding revolution takes shape:

OnePlus 7 reportedly won’t have wireless charging or a 21:9 screen

OnePlus only has a small presence at MWC 2019. It’s showing off a 5G prototype but not making any full product announcements, but that hasn’t meant there’s not new rumors and news about the OnePlus 7.

First up, if you were hoping the OnePlus 7 would support wireless charging, you’re probably going to be out of luck.

Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 IS III Lens Review

Whichever way we look at it, a 400mm f/2.8 lens for full frame cameras is going to be a large proposition. Canon has now lightened that load by producing what they claim to be currently the world’s lightest 400mm f/2.8 optic, and it is in fact only about 73% of the weight of its immediate predecessor. Does this make enough of a difference to enable hand holding for any length of time and is the new lens still the same optical quality that we have come to expect? Let’s have a close look at see if some of these questions can be answered.

Mandatory plan for auto braking

Australian government signs on to AEB standard for early 2020s

Australia is set to make autonomous emergency braking (AEB) a mandatory safety feature for all new passenger vehicles by the early 2020s.

Currently a voluntary fitment for car companies, but required if a vehicle is to achieve the much-desired five-star ANCAP safety rating, AEB is these days regarded as a critical driver aid for avoiding accidents, injury and loss of life.

Reasons to skip the first-generation of Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X

There’s no denying that the foldable phones are the new hot things at MWC this week, whether or not you actually find any practical need for them. To others, they are a dream of the future come true. But after all the hype and marketing has settled down, one thing is going to be clear. Unless you’re an early adopter or have the cash to blow, you’ll want to skip the Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X. And it’s not just because barely anyone can afford them anyway.

Polestar 2 revealed: 2020 premium EV with 275 mile range

The Polestar 2 has been revealed, and with it the Tesla Model 3 has arguably gained its most compelling rival. Second car from Volvo’s electric performance spin-off, the Polestar 2 will take aim at the premium compact electric segment that has served the Model 3 so well, when deliveries begin in early 2020.

The Polestar story

First an aftermarket tuning company, then the in-house performance brand for Volvo Cars, Polestar was hewn off into a standalone automaker back in 2017. Jointly owned by Volvo and Geely, its focus was electrification and with a particular eye on performance cars.

Windows Lite OS is Microsoft’s second try at killing Chrome OS

Windows, to a certain extent, is still the world’s most-used operating system and, because of that, it is a sordid mess. Microsoft has repeatedly tried to create a “lite” version of Windows, from Windows RT to Windows 10 S, only to backtrack and eventually erase those from history. It hasn’t stopped trying, though, and it might soon come out with its next stab at the problem. Currently dubbed “Lite OS”, this stripped down version of Windows 10 is what Microsoft hopes will stop Chrome OS from encroaching on its turf.

OnePlus 7 wireless charging still won’t be happening

Perhaps there is a reason why OnePlus no longer uses its “Never Settle” slogan that much if at all. It has proven, for better or worse, that it will actually settle for something less, usually for price or practical considerations. For some time, it refused to add an NFC chip in its smartphones. It also backtracked on its own boasts and eventually booted the headphone jack out of the OnePlus 6T. In a similar vein, it seems unwilling to budge on the topic of wireless charging, hinting that it won’t be on the upcoming OnePlus 7.

The best of The Bristol Hi-Fi Show 2019

There were plenty of new products and some old favourites

The Bristol Hi-Fi Show was once again the place to be for all things two-channel over the weekend, along with a sprinkling of AV for good measure. There were just enough new launches to keep us busy, as well as the chance to see and hear plenty of products that have been released in recent months and years.

Budget and high-end kit was on show, albeit with a bias towards eye-catching gear with eye-watering prices, and there were headphones and Atmos systems in amongst the rooms of hi-fi systems.

The Honda E Prototype is the electric car Apple should have come out with

Urban, electric, design-led, and minimalist yet advanced. This is the car that Apple should have released, but its front end wears a Honda emblem. Called E Prototype, it will make its debut as a close-to-production concept during the 2019 Geneva Auto Show, and it will reach showrooms in select markets before the end of the year.

Huawei P30 Pro design may be too familiar

For two years now, Huawei has been changing the design of both its P and its Mate series phones every year. If you were expecting that with the Huawei P30, however, you might be sorely disappointed. Based on early leaks, the upcoming flagship from the embattled Chinese manufacturer won’t be straying too far from last year’s premium design. And while confirmation about that has now landed, it also points out Huawei’s attempt to consolidate its smartphones into a single, identifiable family.

Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital review

A tiny DAC and headphone amp that’s big on features

When we think of Pro-Ject, the company’s excellent affordable turntables first spring to mind. But alongside these, and a number of premium record players, there has long been a line-up of ultra compact electronics.

We have found these electronics to be somewhat of a mixed bag over the years, but that hasn’t stopped the range from growing to a point where it now includes CD players, streamers, phono stages, amplification and now DACs such as this one.

2019 GMC Savana 2500 Review

Far from the prettiest or most advanced van in its segment, the 2019 GMC Savana 2500 returns this year virtually unchanged, save for a couple of driver-assist technologies pumping up its options list. GMC hasn’t performed a radical update on the Savana since its mid-1990s launch. There have been mild refreshings and some powertrain improvements, but you would be safe thinking of it as the grandpa among today’s collection of young turks filling out the ranks of the van segment.

2019 Subaru WRX Review

Performance, safety and affordability are the hallmarks of the 2019 Subaru WRX and the WRX STI. Priced in the same range as most family sedans, the WRX line offers impressive performance, with horsepower, acceleration and handling abilities on par with pricey premium brands costing thousands more. The all-wheel-drive WRX still uses the previous generation’s platform, meaning it doesn’t yet benefit from the new global platform underpinning the Subaru Forester, the Crosstrek and the Impreza.
