Grace Digital Mondo+ review

grace-digital-mondo-plus-01

September 27, 2012: the day the internet music died. If you were a fan of Logitech’s Squeezebox, that is.

On that fateful day Logitech’s popular line of wireless speakers lost its war with Sonos and was officially closed down. While a dedicated group of fans still maintain support half a decade later, Logitech’s exit ushered in other Wi-Fi music-based standards such as DTS Play-Fi and Bose SoundTouch.

Now a California company called Grace Digital One is trying to resurrect some of the Squeezebox magic. The Grace Digital Mondo+ is undeniably modeled on the original Logitech Squeezebox Radio, but it’s both cheaper and offers a better feature set. How’s that for progress?

Renault Koleos review: Can the 5-seat SUV make its mark?

French brands have never really succeeded in selling larger cars in the UK. There’s one notable exception: the Renault Espace, a ground-breaking people carrier that did will in the 80s and 90s.

But in 2017 — despite there being an all-new Espace which can be bought elsewhere in Europe, but not the UK — people carriers are old hat. It’s all about SUVs. So Renault is having another crack at the big car market, this time with the Koleos.

Yep, a large car with a comically inappropriate Greek and Latin translation, for whatever reason. Is it enough to, um, get excited about?

There’s one thing we have to get out the way from the off: open the boot and there’s no third-row rear seats. Renault says it is prioritising comfort and individual passenger space in the Koleos — giving everyone a captain-like seat and lashings of legroom — which means there’s no 7-seat versions.

Hisense H9D Plus 4K UHD smart TV review: Great color, but not enough brightness to make HDR shine

We like the 10-bit color. We like the smooth motion. We love the interface. But the relatively low 450 nits of peak brightness isn’t ideal for HDR material. Still, it’s a very nice TV.

h9 model 45 degrees to the left

We were a bit puzzled when we saw the $1299 price tag on Hisense’s 55-inch-class (54.6-inches diagonal measurement) H9D Plus TV. Until now, we hadn’t thought of Hisense competing in the market segment dominated by the likes of Sony and Samsung. We’re rethinking that attitude as the H9D Plus impressed us with superior color depth and fidelity, and overall picture with standard dynamic range material. And as a smart TV, it features one of our favorite user interfaces and lots of apps.

But Hisense is advertising the H9D Plus as an HDR TV. And it is, sort of. It can play HDR-10 content, and its wide 10-bit color space (gamut) means that you do get the HDR effect (think light sabers and neon that really pops). But the rest of the image might be darker than it should be due to a lack of peak brightness.

MSI WS63VR 7RL Review

Most mobile workstations have powerful GPUs that boost performance in graphics apps such as AutoCAD and Photoshop, but sometimes you need something with a little more oomph. Designed for 3D modeling, video editing or engineering but good enough for gaming, the MSI WS63VR ($3,399.99 as tested; $3,099 to start) is up for that task. It packs a brawny Nvidia Pascal-based Quadro GPU into a superslim chassis, thanks to its status as the first workstation with a Max-Q design. Its 4K display might not be as bright as some competitors’ screens, but if you’re looking for raw graphics performance, this is the PC to keep your eye on.

Design

At a glance, the WS63VR looks like any other workstation. It’s made of all-black aluminum, with MSI’s logo in silver and its Workstation shield icon on the lid. It’s a slim rectangle that cuts a sleek profile while it’s closed. When you lift the lid, you’ll find the 15.6-inch, 4K screen and an RGB-backlit QWERTY keyboard with a number pad and an aluminum deck. Although you won’t notice it when using the laptop on your desk, the bottom is covered in a soft, felt-like material.

Travel Photography Gear: Cameras & Accessories For Holidays

It’s now that time of year when – with any luck – you are planning to take a break and go on your summer holidays. Whether that be going abroad or simply enjoying the best that the UK has to offer, you’ll no doubt want to photograph some of the many sights and scenes you encounter on your travels.

Best Travel Photography Cameras and Accessories

Travel photography has its own distinct style, requirements, and often limitations, so in this article we look at some of the best travel camera equipment currently available that will help you perfectly capture your holiday highlights.

THE BEST CAMERAS FOR TRAVELLING

By its very nature, travel photography demands that the photographic equipment used is portable, robust, and quick to deploy. For these reasons, most of the best travel cameras tend not to be digital SLRs. Instead, good cameras for travelling usually fall into either the mirrorless, bridge, compact, or action camera categories.

Cowon Plenue 2 review

We shouldn’t begrudge Cowon describing its Plenue 2 as the “world’s finest DAC”, but these things must always be taken with a pinch of salt. After all, for every ABBA Gold there is a Milli Vanilli Greatest Hits.

Let’s also not forget the Plenue 2’s primary function is as a hi-res personal music player, with its alternative use as a portable DAC more a welcome bonus.

It’s a fairly weighty unit – make sure to tighten your belt before putting it in your pocket – but that befits the amount of technology Cowon has managed to fit inside.

Build and features

But let’s begin with that DAC: it’s a premium AKM model – the AK4497EQ – incorporating ‘Velvet sound’ technology, which is said to reduce any noise and distortion. Working alongside a SoundPlus amplifier, it’s capable of supporting playback of up to 24-bit/192kHz PCM files as well as DSD.

Philips EverPlay BT7900 Bluetooth speaker review

C92eRJ1XkAAPwIJ-770x462

We all know that bass, bass and more bass is the only thing anyone cares about when choosing a Bluetooth speaker, so let’s cut to the chase; the EverPlay BT7900 does bass. It does bass well. It doesn’t overdo it, but it’s clearly been designed to impress those who like their music meaty as well as mobile.

However, there’s a lot more to like about this sleek speaker than its low frequency finesse. It also puts some significant extra distance between it and a phone, which proves really useful. While most Bluetooth speakers offer 10m, you can walk about 30m away from the EverPlay BT7900 before the music cuts out. That’s really handy, as is its waterproof, shockproof and drop-proof design.

Design

At 210 x 72 x 71 mm and 520g, the EverPlay BT7900 is a meaty yet mid-size Bluetooth speaker, a touch smaller than the Sony SRS-XB40.

2017 Holden Astra LT sedan v 2017 Toyota Corolla Ascent sedan comparison

Holden has taken the offensive to the small car segment with the sedan version of its Euro-influenced Astra, offering a number of seemingly red-hot deals in the wake of the flashy four-door’s arrival in local showrooms. So we went trawling to try and find the best-value catch of the day and to measure, against a key market rival, just how hot red-hot really is.

2017 Holden Astra LT sedan v 2017 Toyota Corolla Ascent sedan comparison

At the time of both conception and writing, you could drive away a base LS manual sedan for a tenner under $22k. Further up the food chain, though, sits the mid-spec Astra LT variant, presenting a different, if equally strong, value pitch by blending a fit equipment list, enticing pricing and an ownership ‘deal’ of five-year warranty and roadside assist. Listing at $25,790 with standard fit automatic, it can be had, at the time or writing, for $27,990 drive-away.

Smart Bro Prepaid LTE Home WiFi Review

Smart released their own version of a prepaid home WiFi earlier this week. Called the Smart Prepaid LTE Home WiFi, it’s basically a WiFi router with 4G/LTE capability.

As an alternative to your usual pocket WiFi, the prepaid SmartBro is more of a fixed LTE router that requires a wall outlet.

This is not the first time Smart had this kind of device. In March 2009, they released the SmartBro Share It wireless router. It was under a postpaid plan and costs Php999/$20 a month for 90 hours of internet at 2Mbps speed.

In July of the same year, they upgraded the plan from 90 hours a month to unlimited though it still had limited connection within Metro Manila. They eventually retired the service by September 2011, just a little over 2 years after it was introduced.

Samsung Galaxy J7 Pro Review: The Mid-Ranged Phone for Low-light Photography?

Can it actually capture the night?

Samsung released their mid-ranged contender last month and they weren’t shy about taking the fight to other brands. Does the Samsung Galaxy J7 Pro live up to the hype? Can it truly capture the night like the LSS inducing song by Liza Soberano actually says? Let’s find out in this full review for the Samsung Galaxy J7 Pro.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Active vs Galaxy S8: What’s the difference?

Samsung has announced a rugged version of its super Galaxy S8 smartphone. AOC C4008UV8 review

I am becoming addicted to big 4K monitors. When I work, I have more windows and applications open than my operating system can typically handle, and  for working with photos there’s nothing like it (except perhaps a big 8K monitor).

aoc-c4008vu8-monitor-03

When I decided to review AOC’s 40-inch curved display, it was because I mistakenly had in my notes that it cost $600 and wanted to see if it was a good deal for a big screen on a budget. The specs sounded terrific for the money: a huge 10-bit UHD (3,840×2,160) panel with a nice selection of connection options, built-in speakers and four USB ports.

Much later I realized it actually goes for about $900. I was ambivalent about it at $600, and am even more so for the higher price. (AU$899 seems to be the price in Australia, as well; I don’t think it’s available in the UK, but for reference  the US price directly converts to about £682.)

2017 Nissan Pathfinder review

You never really appreciate a good HVAC system until it’s 111 degrees Fahrenheit outside and you’re stuck in notorious Los Angeles stop-and-go traffic.

I’d been behind the wheel of the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder for a few hours, driving from Venice Beach in Los Angeles eastward to what’s known as the Inland Empire. The further I got from the ocean, the higher the summer temperatures climbed and the more cars crowded onto the freeway.

For 5 hours the Pathfinder kept its engine temperature at precisely a tick below the gauge’s midpoint while blasting out immense amounts of cold air. I arrived at my destination cool as a cucumber and ready to tackle whatever the rest of the day could throw my way.

2017 Nissan Pathfinder

While the Pathfinder started out in 1987 as a rugged SUV,  literally built to find paths. 30 years later it’s more likely to be seen searching for parking spaces at Applebee’s. It’s Nissan’s smaller three-row crossover, sitting below the gargantuan Armada in terms of space. Front-wheel-drive is standard but all-wheel-drive is optional for $1,690 across S, SV, SL and Platinum trim levels.

Moto E4 Plus Review : The Never-ending Battery

The Moto E4 Plus Review we’ve got on deck today rolls through the basics of its hardware and software and offers judgement on its overall value. While the hardware is decent – especially for this price – it’s within the long-lasting battery that this device truly shines. Can a device whose display, camera, and processor would be home in the mid-range two years ago survive as a low-end smartphone here in 2017? How about if it has a 5000mAh battery, 2.5x the size of the battery of the latest iPhone?

Hardware

The version of the Moto E4 Plus that we’re reviewing here is 155mm tall, 77.5mm wide, and 9.55mm deep. This Moto E4 Plus is 181g light, and has a 5.5-inch HD display up front – that’s 1280 x 720, therefore a baseline 267 pixels per inch. Inside is either 16GB of data as well as a microSD card slot that can potentially utilize a microSD card (sold separately) with up to 128GB additional storage.

2017 KTM 1090 Adventure R Vs. KTM 1190 Adventure R

There comes a time in our lives when we find ourselves looking to purchase a new motorcycle, whether new to us or brand-spanking new from the showroom. But, wait, is that model due for an update? Should you wait for the new one or buy an older model to save some cash?

When KTM rolled out its lineup of V-Twin Adventure models for 2017, we were surprised the excellent 1190 models were dropped in favor of a 1290 R and the touring-oriented 1290 T, along with the new (to our market) 1090 R, which retails for $14,699. That left the $16,799 1190 R, the winner of our epic Wire-Wheel Adventure Shootout, out of KTM’s 2017 lineup.

To be fair, having a 1090, 1190, and 1290 would have been a bit much, so KTM expanded the gap by dropping out the 1190 models. As an owner of an 1190 R, that means that my beloved motorcycle got the boot. Did that leave me with an obsolete, defunct, and worthless old model? Hardly.

Nvidia Max-Q vs. Pascal: What Gaming Laptop Should You Get?

There’s been a lot of hype surrounding Nvidia’s new Max-Q laptop design standard. With a few power adjustments and some clever designs, a handful of companies have created mobile gaming rigs that put the power of a hulking 10-pound beast into a chassis that’s slim enough to slip into a compact backpack or a large purse.

Max-Q laptops are great for people who want to game on the go without sacrificing too much power. But how well do these systems stand up against their traditional Pascal-powered counterparts? We compared several gaming systems to find out.

What is Max-Q?

In aerospace engineering, the term “max-Q” refers to “maximum dynamic pressure,” which is important in rocket design. But for laptops, Max-Q focuses on power and heat efficiency.

Hands on: Fossil Q Explorist review

p1060911-1490285119-09lH-full-width-inline

Fossil is no stranger to making a smartwatch. Since its first debuted well over a year ago, it has worked to make each model a little slimmer and more feature-packed than the last. But one thing that always tugged them down was the annoying flat tire look, the flat line at the bottom of the screen that prevents the screen from going full circle.

The Fossil Q Explorist is the most comprehensive, cohesive smartwatch from the company yet. Not only has its screen gone full circle, it comes with customizable software buttons and Android Wear 2.0 out of the box.

Launching for $255 in late September, the Explorist seems be priced well for a smartwatch with more pizzazz than most others. We’ll have to wait and see if it brings anything inventive to the table in terms of software, but this could be one of 2017’s better options when it launches later this Autumn.

Fixd Review (2nd Generation): Good OBD II Scanner for the Money

Like other diagnostic scanners, the tiny Fixd adapter plugs into the OBD-II port of any car sold in the U.S. since 1996. This lets it tap into the vehicle’s computers and display active and archived faults.

Editors’ note: Avoid the first-generation Fixd adapter, which has not been well received among its buyers. The second-generation hardware — the one we tested — is much more reliable and useful.

Koss Fitbuds BT190i review

The Koss Fitbuds BT190is are budget wireless earphones for people looking to keep costs down – perhaps as a pair of headphones to wear while running or at the gym.

Given the price, their sound is pretty respectable, but poor wireless performance means they are a trial to use.

Build

The Koss Fitbuds BT190is are clearly made for sport use. Earphones don’t usually look this bright or this angular without having runners in mind.

They also come in plain white or black, as well as  lime green or the orange of our sample pair.

Like many sporty pairs, the Koss Fitbuds BT190i have silicone ear stabilisers that, when rotated in the ear properly, stop them from bouncing out of your ears at the first tug.

You can take the hooks off, but you probably won’t want to as they are the only real securing point aside from the standard tips.

The Nikon D850: What we know so far!

It’s always a nice surprise to hear about a new product, especially when it is one that is a successor to one that has been so popular, and so good throughout its tenure.

However, sometimes we just get mere teasers from manufacturers letting us know that a new camera is on the way. With little or no further information than that! We saw this recently from Olympus with the E-M1 Mark II, and around the same time we were teased with the Panasonic GH5.

So, what do we know about the Nikon D850 so far?

THE NIKON D850 IS CALLED THE NIKON D850

OK, hear us out here. It seems a bit tenuous to start with this, but there has been much speculation about what name this DSLR would adopt.

Initially most rumour sites, and us internally, were referring to this as the Nikon D820 – so we were quite surprised once we saw the number increase by 40 to its official D850 title.

The 10 most popular cars in the UK right now

Demand for diesel cars slumped again in July, as sales of hybrid and electric vehicles soared. We take a look at the other winners and losers, and count down the top 10 most popular new cars

UK new car registrations fell by 9.3% in July compared with the same month last year – the fourth consecutive month of decline following a record start to the year.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT) attributes this downturn to uncertaintly caused by the general election and changes to VED road tax introduced on 1 April.

Sales of diesel cars fell particulary dramatically in July, with them down 20.1% on the same period in 2016, while demand for petrol cars shrank by 3.1%. However, the news wasn’t all bad; the number of alternative fuel vehicles (such as hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric cars registered was up by 64.9%, even if these still accounted for just 5.5% of the total market.

iHome iAVS1 Bedside Speaker Review: Don’t Make Time for This Echo Clock

The Amazon Echo Show has been sitting on my night table for a few weeks now, as its dual speakers make for an excellent alarm clock and ad hoc stereo for my bedroom. But not everyone wants to spend more than $200 for the privilege of having Alexa as a bedside companion.

The iHome Bedside Stereo Speaker System for Amazon Echo Dot ($69) presents itself as a much less expensive alternative: Dock your Dot, and you get improved sound and a small display that shows the time. Sadly, this isn’t the next-gen alarm clock I was hoping for.

Design

Measuring 6.7 x 6.7 x 2.2 inches, the iHome is a sizable speaker dock, taking up even more of my nightstand than the substantial Echo Show. The top of the squarish iHome is covered in a gray metal mesh; in the middle is a circular indentation into which the Echo Dot sits.
