Google Pixel XL Review: Android embodied, for better or worse

Nexus phones have always represented Google’s super-focused vision of the future of Android, but for 2016 the attention to detail is getting down to individual pixels. That’s pixels, plural: two Nougat flagships, distinguished only by their size, the 5-inch Pixel and 5.5-inch Pixel XL. Each, for better and for worse, the purest embodiment of what Android is today and where it will go tomorrow.

Google and HTC’s design is oddly divisive for something so simple. Some I showed it to welcomed the clean lines and minimal ornamentation. Others, though, felt it fell somewhere between boring and just plain ugly; the shiny glass crop-top on the upper rear, presumably required for RF reasons, earned particular criticism.

For years, Google chose to partner with manufacturers to create handsets showing off the purest form of Android, with the latest innovations highlighted by the best hardware. This was what the Nexus range was all about. But this lead to at least a few compromises.

With the arrival of Daydream VR, and with so many hardware makers falling on financial hard times, Google couldn’t afford any compromises. The Pixel is the company’s first home-made smartphone. It offers the latest version of Android, with a few Pixel-specific features, and support for the as-yet-unreleased VR system.

The Pixel may not have been technically built by Google, but neither is the iPhone technically built by Apple. It’s commonplace to have another company building the actual hardware. Follow-up to the well received BackBeat PRO of 2014, the revamped model slims down the hit on your wallet and the space occupied in your bag. That’s while still promising superlative wireless performance and enough battery life for back-to-back transatlantic flights with juice to spare.

Plantronics has opted for a more grown-up design for this second-generation set of cans, and the result is handsome, if a little plasticky. According to the company the biggest complaints about the original BackBeat PRO were around its bulk and its ergonomics over extended periods; to address that, the BackBeat PRO 2 are 15-percent lighter and 35-percent smaller.

2017 Bentley Mulsanne Speed Review: The $400,000 question

It’s late in the evening in San Francisco, and I’m singing along to Blondie’s “Atomic” at the top of my lungs in a $400k Bentley Mulsanne Speed when I realize people have stopped walking to watch me at the lights. Then again, when you’re driving eighteen feet of British hyper-luxury sedan, it probably doesn’t matter much what you’re doing. You’re going to get attention either way.

In the strata of astonishingly expensive cars, the Mulsanne Speed is a niche within a niche. Forget Bentley’s Flying Spur, which is as “entry-level” as the automaker’s sedans get: that’s a mere $200k or thereabouts. Even the regular Mulsanne is eclipsed by its faster, pricier sibling.

I suspect you don’t need a review of the Mulsanne Speed. If you’re one of the very, very small number of people – a fraction of a fraction of the one-percent – considering buying this very expensive, very exclusive car, you probably don’t require my opinion on it first. You’re probably cross-shopping against the Rolls-Royce Phantom, which might strike you as a little buttoned-up even in Black Badge form, or the Mercedes-Maybach, a car that I fear may be too similar to the S-Class ‘Benz it hails from to stand out in this rarified company.

What is the Neat IOTA Alpha?

The Neat IOTA Alpha is a floorstanding version of the IOTA standmount speaker we reviewed in 2013. Turning a standmount speaker into a larger model is far from unusual – it happens all the time either at the outset of the design process or not that long afterward. What you see here is a bit less mainstream for a few reasons. When you look at an IOTA objectively, it doesn’t look like a prime candidate to be turned into a larger speaker. The unique form factor and general titchiness of the chassis doesn’t make it look like a dead cert to be anything else.

Take one look at the IOTA Alpha and you can clearly see that the resulting speaker is not a normal floorstander. If you were to tick off the attributes you might apply to such a speaker, the IOTA possesses almost none of them. The thing is though that when I heard a prototype pair at the Bristol Sound and Vision show back in February, the performance was so at odds with the speakers themselves that I have been pestering Neat ever since to get my hands on a pair.

Lenovo Yoga Book (Windows) Review

To write, or not to write, that is the question. Whether ’tis nobler to write down the slings and arrows the mind suffers on a simple pad or pen or to go all digital amidst a sea of verbiage.

Sorry, I got a little literary there. But it’s hard not to with something as unique as the Lenovo Yoga Book ($549 for Windows, $499 for Android). Made for the writer, journalist or artist, the 0.38-inch thick convertible logs all your fevered pen strokes on its 10-inch screen via Lenovo’s proprietary Create Pad, which doubles as a first-of-its-kind haptic keyboard.

As novel as these innovations are, they prevent the Yoga Book from functioning as a fully realized Windows convertible, especially the typing experience. Ultimately, the Yoga Book needs quite a few tweaks before the convertible of tomorrow becomes ready for today.

LENOVO YOGA BOOK REVIEW

Lenovo has never been afraid to try crazy new ideas. The Yoga Book may be its craziest venture yet. It’s an otherworldly product that doesn’t fit comfortably in any existing category. It’s kind of like a 2-in-1, because it’s a tablet and it has a keyboard (unlike any you’ve ever seen), but it’s so much more than that.

No other 2-in-1 has a touch-sensitive drawing slate that doubles as a notepad, and a crazy keyless keyboard that appears and vanishes with a touch of a button. The Yoga Book is truly unique, and for that reason alone, it’s one of the most exciting products we’ve reviewed this year.

A good idea is one thing, though. Executing it is another. We put the Android version of the Yoga Book through its paces to see if it’s a viable alternative to a laptop, or just a really unique tablet.

We’re no strangers to testing high-end integrated amplifiers, but they are normally purist affairs where every feature has been stripped back in the pursuit of sound quality.

Parasound’s approach with its Halo Integrated is unusual, and refreshingly accommodating.

It’s as though the company has made a genuine attempt to build a high quality unit that’s as flexible as possible. Think of every feature you could reasonably expect to find in a premium stereo integrated – and the Halo probably has it.

Features

You get a switchable phono stage, a headphone output and even tone controls. We can’t remember the last time we reviewed a product such as this with bass and treble controls.

ASUS ZenPad 3S 10 Hands-On With Z Stylus & First Impressions

It’s been a while since I looked at a 9.7″ retina tablet, everything (well almost) has shifted to the popular 2-in-1 format with tablet and attachable keyboard.

Not the case with the new ASUS Zenpad 3S 10, it’s got no keyboard, not even a case/stand/ keyboard combo one like the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2. The new 430 gram retina tablet runs Android 6.0.1, no dual boot here, seems none of the more know brands are willing to do dual boots. Maybe not to cut into their Windows sales?

So it was the spec sheet that caught my eye, 4GB of RAM, 64GB eMMC with MicroSD slot, Hexa-core processor, fingerprint reader, active “Z Stylus” with 1024 pressure levels and palm rejection. It also has Wireless AC, BT 4.0 Quick charge 3.0 support. All housed in a thin and light premium metal unibody.

10 BEST QUADS OF THE LAST 25 YEARS

The last 25 years in the ATV world saw huge growth with tons of exciting new ATVs. However, this quarter century was bookended by stale times. At both of those ends, it was Yamaha holding the torch for the sport and still producing machines we could buy new at the dealerships. That might be why the brand had more top sport quads in the last 25 years than anyone. Regardless of what brand you like, all of these machines would be a great buy in any state of tune.

Yamaha’s Banshee had a good twenty year run from the 1980s to 2006. It didn’t change much over time (almost no changes other than one front suspension change and colors were made to it) but people didn’t care because at one time there were more aftermarket parts available for the twin cylinder 2-stroke Banshee than any other machine.

I’ve been using two Nikon D3s’s for the last few years. I adore this camera, and have often touted it as the perfect choice for wedding photography. Arguably the best mix of megapixels in terms of print ability and online/offline storage, impeccable AF, low second hand prices and the greatest high ISO ability (in the context of dynamic range) of any serious professional action camera.

While weddings aren’t as fast as sport, I move quickly and shoot quickly. If you consider that ‘poor technique’, consider this: I don’t want a camera that can’t keep up with me. I want a camera that is transparent; a seamless element of my thought and action process. The D3s has been a faithful servant in this regard where many others have failed.

Acer Predator 15 (G9-593, with GTX 1070) review – the second attack

The last Predator generation with GTX 9xx GPU was a great hit and this was the laptop which proved that Acer can build one of the best gaming notebooks on the market. Several months after that we were in New York where the Taiwanese company announced Predator 17X (detailed review) – the ultimate gaming beast with a desktop GTX 980 under the hood and industry leading cooling system. The only drawback was the price (it costs around $2300) but we know that if we want cutting-edge, we have to prepare our wallets. Anyway, 17X turned out to be short-lived because NVIDIA hurried with its GTX 10xx series. And as you may guess…it’s a big deal.

The even better news – the GTX 10xx’s notebook versions are very close to their desktop siblings in terms of raw performance. The leap from GTX 9xx to 10xx is huge and that makes the gap between GTX 9xxM and their successors even bigger. Although we were recommending 17X as a good choice, now the game has changed, in a big way. The latest Predator 15 (G9-593) with GTX 1070 will wipe the floor with its bigger and (not much) older brother, and moreover – its price will be lower.

Not cheap. Not practical. Not really anything more than a personal extravagance. And yet, so satisfying.

The long bonnets, flowing lines, and big, relaxed engines are the kinds of emotive hardware that songs have been written about.

BMW is no stranger to the big GT Coupe, with the iconic 6 Series name now celebrating 40-years on the road.

Back in 1976, BMW launched the E24 6 Series as a replacement for the stylish (but then 10-year old) E9 coupe. The E9 had made its mark on the road as well as on the racetrack, spawning the infamous 3.0 CSL ‘Batmobile’.

Panasonic Lumix FZ2500 First Impressions Review

As smartphones continue to be the primary camera for most people, dedicated cameras have had to become more specialized. The superzoom category—fixed-lens point-and-shoots that offer huge zoom ranges—are a popular choice because they allow you to get shots of subject both close and very, very far away.

The new Panasonic DMC-FZ2500 (MSRP $1,199.99) is expensive, but it may quickly contend with the Sony RX10 III for the crown of the best superzoom camera. Why? Because it takes nearly all the video-capturing prowess of Panasonic’s superb interchangeable lens cameras and puts it in a body that is weather-sealed, fully-featured, and has an amazing lens. It’s like a high-end camera and a high-end camcorder in one body.

We got some hands-on time with the new camera in our offices ahead of the launch at Photokina, and we came away very impressed. Though not quite the slam dunk bargain that the lower end Panasonic FZ1000 represents, the FZ2500 should be perfect for anyone who wants a do-it-all camera in a single package.

Over the past seven days we’ve brought you news thatMicrosoft HoloLens is coming to the UK, Google’s smartwatch duo are set for early next year, Blocks has delayed its smartwatch (again), the HTC Vive has some new controllers in the works, and that the cancelled Microsoft Band 3 may have leaked. Oh, and this happened too.

But what other grist has there been for the rumour mill? Let’s investigate.

Samsung builds tech for next-gen wearables

And it probably won’t catch on fire! Sorry Samsung, people won’t let that one go for a while. In more positive news for the company that’s currently expecting losses north of $5 billion after the Note 7 fiasco, it’s also produced some tech that will power its next generation of wearables – which we assume will include the Gear S4.

Vivo Y55 Hands-on Review – First Impressions

Vivo Philippines officially launched its only entry-level smartphone that carries an octa-core Snapdragon processor — the Y55. It categorizes itself as sort of a selfie-centric phone with its Smart Screen flash and is attractively priced at Php7,990. Let’s take a quick look at its physique and see what it has to offer.

The Y55 sports a 5.2-inch IPS display with good viewing angles. It is also fitted with an HD panel (1280 x 720 pixels) and a glass that smoothly wraps around the chassis thanks to its 2.5D treatment. Up top is the usual front-facing camera with a 5-megapixel resolution next to the speaker for calls.

It implements a trio of capacitive buttons which are unlit and a fairly noticeable bezel surrounding the display. On the hand, it has a good feel and provides a decent grip due to the curvature of its body.

Hands on: Linksys WRT 1200AC with ExpressVPN review

Routers, like pretty much every other piece of computing hardware, have reached a maturation peak with very little disruptive innovation now happening.

A few smaller vendors are trying new things to differentiate themselves from the rest of the competition, often by offering fine-tuned, bespoke services.

It certainly came as a surprise when one VPN provider, ExpressVPN, offered to send us the Linksys WRT 1200AC router with its services baked in by way of a customised firmware.

Note that in our case, the router was already preconfigured, but owners of the WRT 1200AC or the WRT 1900AC/S (the only two Linksys routers that support the native ExpressVPN option) will be able to install this particular firmware.

A couple of points here: changing the firmware of your router is not for the faint hearted and there’s a small chance that you could brick (break) your device during the process.

2016 Lexus RC F Review – Needs an attitude adjustment

First impressions matter, which is why – economy be damned – the Lexus RC F should start up in its feistiest Sport S+ mode. Lexus‘ hottest model, offering 467 HP and 389 lb-ft of torque from a 5.0-liter V8 that, increasingly rare, succumbs neither to turbocharging nor supercharging, it sits alongside the more practical GS F but – also like its sedan sibling – hides its magic from the start.

It’s increasingly hard these days to find a car without a “Sport” button on the dashboard. More often than not, it’s difficult to see exactly what pressing it actually does: a little more accelerator sensitivity here, a little less traction control policing there.

At times, I suspect automakers had a spare button and bulb assembly lying around, and pressing “Sport” does nothing more than light the whole thing up.

The RC F is different. Very different. Gloriously, frustratingly different, in fact.
