Frederique Constant Horological Smartwatch Worldtimer review

It’s a lovely looking watch (I think, at least) and the step counting is pretty accurate. However, the sleep monitoring was a bit of a horror show. We’d also have expected the Horological Smartwatch Open Platform (and its Motion X app) to have progressed a bit by now – it’s all a bit basic on the app front. There’s no smart notification alerts either. However, if you’re looking for a slick looking watch / glorified pedometer then the Worldtimer could be for you. Sure, it’s expensive – but since when has that stopped people buying stylish timepieces?

Yamaha RX-V581 review

Yamaha’s £500/$750 AV receivers have had to bow down to superior rivals from Denon and Sony over the past couple of years, but 2016 could just be the year that the tide turns back in Yamaha’s favour.

The company is due a comeback, not least because the Yamaha RX-V581 is a beast of an amplifier.

Build

The Yamaha RX-V581 is the sturdy rectangular box we’ve come to expect of AV receivers.

It’s a touch shallower and lighter than its rivals, such as the Denon AVR-X2300W and the Pioneer VSX-1131, but the build quality is as solid as ever. It’s a relatively easy amp to accomodate.

Samsung 2016 Tizen Smart TV System Review

What is Tizen?

While Samsung can be credited for inventing the idea of a ‘Smart TV,’ way back in 2008, they’re almost in the position of having just torn it all up and started afresh. The Tizen operating system – which is a serious departure from what went before – was first equipped in a Samsung TV in 2015 and it was a bold move, given their previous ‘Smart’ sets were probably the best on the market, in terms of the range of apps available and diversity of features. There’s little doubt that Samsung’s local rivals, LG, might have at least partially precipitated the move to Tizen, with their game-changing WebOSplatform in 2014, but it was always on the roadmap for Samsung.

So, what can Tizen do? Most folks reading this will no doubt be aware of at least some of what a Smart TV can do. Quite naturally, the most popular apps are those for video streaming, whether that be paid-for subscription services like Amazon and Netflix, or free-to-use ones like BBC iPlayer or YouTube; almost all new Smart TVs have at least three of these services available and lots more besides. Music streaming apps are also popular and there’s an increased focus on playing games through them, too, as internet speeds and graphics processing power both increase.

Samsung Notebook 7 Spin Review

At first glance, the Samsung Notebook 7 Spin is the most beautiful convertible 2-in-1 on the market. When you really take a good look (and go hands-on), that facade starts to crack. The $1,199 ($999 to start) laptop’s shallow keyboard, poor-quality webcam and lackluster battery take away from that initial glow. But if you care about style, the Notebook 7 Spin has it in spades, and the performance from its Core i7 processor and Nvidia GeForce 940MX graphics card may be enough for you to overlook its shortcomings

Design

The Notebook 7 Spin is the most beautiful 2-in-1 Ive laid my eyes on to date. The silver aluminum chassis is built solidly and the rounded edges are inviting and attractive. Opening the reflective plastic lid reveals the 15.6-inch, 1080p touch screen and a full island-style keyboard with number pad. Unlike the smaller Samsung Notebook 9 Spin, which has two hinges, the Notebook 7 flips around a single hinge with the computers name on it. The whole package looks quite a bit like a MacBook but Apple doesnt make a 2-in-1.

Zeiss Touit 50mm f/2.8 Makro-Planar T* (Fuji X) Review

The Zeiss 50mm f/2.8 Makro-Planar, which fills out the trio of Touit lenses for mirrorless cameras, has finally arrived.  This line, for both Fuji X-mount and Sony E-mount, is separate from the lenses that Zeiss creates with Sony specifically for their E-Mount and A-mount cameras.  The Touit 50mm is a true 1:1 macro lens and with a short telephoto focal length can potentially pull double duty as a portrait and general purpose lens.  While the version reviewed here is for the Fuji X-Mount, the E-Mount version of the lens should be identical in every way, save for the absence of an aperture ring. This lens has been anticipated for quite some time, so let’s dive in.

Apple watchOS 3 release date, news and features

Watch OS 3 beta has brought changes to Apple’s smartwatch.

Update: The Watch OS 3 release date is expected in two months, as Apple Watchapp developers are right now beta testing the new software. Here’s what’s planned.

The next best thing to the Apple Watch 2 is almost here: Watch OS 3. It’s the highly anticipated refresh to your existing iPhone-compatible smartwatch, the Apple Watch that’s running watchOS 2 today.

The new firmware means the smartwatch is faster than ever before, yet is still able to deliver a handful of additional features, some in conjunction with iOS 10. It’s the Apple Watch done right.

We can’t fast forward time (that Apple Watch time travel feature doesn’t actually work like that), so we’ll have to wait a bit longer for Watch OS 3. In the meantime, here’s the breakdown of new features.

Getac S410 Review

You know the briefcase that the Secret Service gives to the president to enter the nuclear codes — the one they call “the football”? That’s what the Getac S410 looks and feels like. It’s a $3,830, 6.2-pound rugged laptop targeted to police officers, construction workers and other professionals who need protection from nature. It can withstand 3-foot drops and light splashes, as well as dirt and dust, and as a bonus, you can carry it like a briefcase. Plus, an incredibly bright screen lets you work in direct sunlight. While you’ll pay a hefty premium for its durability, the S410 is the laptop to buy if you need to use your notebook extensively outdoors and the fate of your business — or the world — depends on it.

Sony 85mm f/1.4 GM vs. Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 vs. Canon 100mm f/2 Comparisons

Today I’m comparing the new Sony 85mm f/1.4 G Master against the two full frame portrait primes I happen to own.  I know many would like to see a comparison with the Batis 85mm , but alas, I do not have one handy.  Still, this is an interesting comparison, as it pits the newest ultra-high end portrait prime against two pretty significant underdogs: the ultra- cheap, but highly regarded Rokinon (Samyang) 85mm f/1.4, and my trust Canon 100mm f/2, a design that’s 25 years old, but still a seriously quality optic (that happens to work great on Sony with a smart adapter). The 85mm f/1.4 GM comes in at a whopping $1800, while the other two options here are a little easier on the wallet.  The Canon 100mm f/2 retails for just $500, though you’ll need to add in the cost of an AF adapter if you don’t already own one.  The Rokinon is an astoundingly cheap $270…yet shares the same ultra-fast maximum aperture with the Sony.  So is the extra grand+ worth the cost?

The 85mm f/1.4 GM goes head to head with some more budget friendly optics.

2016 BMW X1 xDrive28i Review

Decry me as a wagon-loving European rabble-rouser if you must, but BMW’s decision to give the X1 a crossover-style makeover felt like a misstep. The original X1 always felt like a clandestine feint by the German automaker: yes, it bore the badge of an X Series, but its 3 Series underpinnings were more wagon than America’s tastes generally lean toward.

Unfortunately, US drivers refuse to take their medicine – even if as I suspect, for many, an unfashionable wagon would make more sense for them than a generally less economical crossover does – and so in its second generation the X1 gets bigger, taller, and altogether more SUV-lite.

2016-bmw-x1-review-1

The styling is certainly mini-X5, the upright proportions emphasized by a shorter wheelbase than the outgoing car. It’s butch and handsome, angry with its LED lights and chromed nostrils where the Audi Q3 looks haughty like a disapproving robo-butler.

Hear the difference with Axon 7: the smartphone that’s your ultimate audio ally

Sponsored: Tired of terrible tunes? Worry no more!

We don’t need more gadgets in our lives: we need more that can do more things brilliantly – much like the ZTE Axon 7, which deletes the need for a Bluetooth speaker when the Hi-Fi sound that comes out of this handset is of such high quality.

What does that mean in real terms? For anything to do with sound, the ZTE Axon 7 is simply remarkable.

This holds true whether we’re talking about its stylish earbuds, built-in speakers, or even its sound quality while you’re talking on the phone, listening to music, playing video games, watching movies or streaming any kind of video.

iPad Stylus Review Roundup : Best Pen for Your Tablet

As an infographics artist, I rely on a Wacom drawing tablet to get sketches into my computer. Drawing on the iPad has been challenging due to the limitations of the typical rubber-tipped stylus: difficulty in seeing what’s under the wide stylus tip, and the headache of accidental taps caused by other parts of my hand resting on the iPad screen.

We evaluated a current crop of styluses, to see which ones are the most helpful on the iPad Air. Of course, the iPad Pro has the Apple Pencil. Unfortunately, other iPads, such as the Air and the mini, cannot pair with the Pencil, so I ruled that out.

A rubber-tipped capacitive stylus interacts with the screen the same way your fingertip does, so it is ready to use instantly. An active stylus contains a battery and must be powered on for the iPad to recognize it. Active styluses often have smaller, hard-plastic nibs in place of the rubber tip, making this type of stylus more precise.

Hands on: Vorke V1 review

Another tiny PC – but with a difference.

The flood of small form factor personal computers on the market means that it has become increasingly difficult for vendors to differentiate themselves from their competitors.

This is particularly true given the razor-thin margins they tend to live on, which explains why corners are often cut where possible, and why sometimes some rival models share similar features and chassis.

This is the case for the Vorke V1 and the Pipo X6S. We’re checking out the former today, courtesy of Geekbuying, which is selling this mini PC for around £160 (about $210, AU$280), but that’s subject to exchange rate fluctuations.

Ball For BMW GMT Limited Edition Watch: Sold With Future In Mind

The future of the watch industry is happening, but it might be easy to miss since it doesn’t necessarily come with much fanfare from the industry itself. Moshi Avanti headphones review : These cans deliver dulcet tones in a compact, lightweight package

Moshi’s new Avanti headphones are all about rich, intensely detailed sound—the kind you did not know was even present in the song you’ve listened to hundreds of times with lesser earphones, ear buds, or through your computer or TV speakers.

Moshi, a company that specializes in mobile tech accessories, has expanded its product line to bring its first on-ear headphones to the market. In terms of style, the Avanti fits right into the company’s elegant minimalist aesthetic. A silver stainless-steel headband features a sleek slider adjustment to fit your head, and the attractive ear cups are available in either Caramel Beige or Burgundy Red. The cups turn in on the frame with a ratchet movement, making them more compact for storage in the included gray canvas linen-like carrying case.

Fitbit Charge 2 release date, news and rumors

A refresh to a classic.

It’s confirmed there are brand new Fitbit devices coming later this year and the rumors point toward a new version of the Fitbit Charge in amongst the pack.

Since it first launched in 2014, the Fitbit Charge has been one of the most popular devices in the Fitbit range. But it’s due a refresh and it would make sense for the company to do it in the tail end of 2016.

This year we have already seen the release of the Fitbit Blaze and the Fitbit Alta, but the company will be showing off some devices at IFA 2016. That’s in September in Berlin so we can expect to see some updates then and there.

Vimtag P1 Smart Cloud IP Camera review : a simple security solution for the home

Vimtag isn’t a household name, but the 17-year-old company’s security cameras and accessories have amassed some pretty stellar reviews on Amazon.com. After putting the its P1 Smart Cloud IP Camera through it’s paces, it’s easy to see why. While it doesn’t sport a particularly arresting design or boast bleeding-edge features like facial recognition, it easily stands with our favorite security cameras thanks to some solid technology and and an excellent user experience.

What you get

The Vimtag P1 follows what are now well-established design cues for DIY security cameras: an inoffensive pod-like body in a white finish that can be placed on any tabletop surface. While it can be inconspicuously nestled within a bookshelf or between knick-knacks in an entertainment center, it comes with a couple of screws should you want to, say, mount it upside down on your ceiling.

The long overdue ZUK Z2 Pro Review

With a more than a weeks under my belt with the ZUK Z2 Pro it’s about time I release the full review of this flagship smartphone and what it is like to live with.

For those us keeping count, the ZUK Z2 Pro is the 2nd flagship phone from the Lenovo backed smartphone maker, and the 2nd phone the company has with a Snapdragon 820 chipset. Being a 2nd gen phone it sees a lot of improvements over the original Z1, and also some changes that some potential customers might not enjoy. For example the ZUK Z2 Pro has a smaller screen and smaller battery than the original ZUK, but for me neither have been an issue.

BEST LAPTOP COOLING PAD

Laptops’ portability is one of its biggest advantages, however the small size has some drawbacks. Laptops’ cooling tends to be less robust like desktop PCs, although you can experiment with putting cooling systems for CPUs. Laptops often only come with tiny internal fans or are cooling passively. This means that heat dissipation could become an issue with these tiny laptops, leading to a significant decrease in performance. Laptop cooling pads are an effective way to deal with the device that is getting too hot, and even your powerful Gaming laptop could benefit from it.

In general, laptop cooling pads help ensure your device gets better airflow. The laptop being placed on blankets or pillows could restrict airflow and make it more hot however laptop cooling pads prevent this. Many even have fans that push air into the laptop to help in cooling the internals as well as the chassis. This extra cooling will aid in keeping your device comfortable to feel. Additionally, certain pads can be extremely useful in making your legs more comfortable because they provide cushioning and serve as an extra layer between your hot laptop as well as your body.

There are many laptop cooling pads on the market that are designed to address specific requirements. They can rest in your lap all day long, while others are extremely portable or carry amusing RGB lighting. If this is something you’ve considered then we’ve put together an assortment of our top Laptop cooling pads in order to help make your choice easier. Look over our picks below.

Sharp Aquos N7000 review : A 55-inch 4K UHD TV with good audio and HDR-10 (well, sort of)

For a few bucks more than the average budget TV, you get state-of-the-art connectivity, better-than-average sound, and the ability to play HDR-10 content, albeit, not nearly to full effect.

This WLED/LCD TV competes in the tier just above entry level and offers a good if not great picture, as well as better-than-average audio. It also has the the ability to play HDR-10 content, if not render it in true HDR fashion. A good TV for those on a budget, but who want a bit more.

If you’re looking for an affordable 4K UHD TV with the latest connectivity and better-than-average sound, Sharp’s $800 55-inch class Aquos N7000 should be on your short list. The N7000 is even “HDR-enabled” (High Dynamic Range), meaning it can play HDR10 content, although it doesn’t possess the display chops to take full advantage of that feature.

Subaru Forester XT Premium v BMW X1 sDrive 20i Comparison

Bringing the 2016 Subaru Forester XT Premium and 2016 BMW X1 sDrive 20itogether for a head-to-head gunfight isn’t quite as left field as it might seem. Pricing is close – only $3610 between the starting prices – and both are positioned as affordable family SUVs at the smaller end of the scale. The fact that one of them – the X1 – is FWD hasn’t escaped us either.

forester-xt_v_bmw-x1_header

So, side step the argument over whether a FWD is actually an SUV in the first place, and you have two similar takes on the same basic theory. Don’t worry about the X1 slotting into the ‘Small SUV’ segment, while the Forester is a step up in ‘Medium SUV’ either – the X1’s cabin is actually larger…

BMW’s promotional material will have you believe the German manufacturer has a mortgage on the ‘ultimate driving machine’ tag too, so the X1 has a lot to live up to. In that same vein, Subaru claims to build vehicles that are ‘all four the driver’, so the Forester needs to be as enjoyable to drive as it is sensibly packaged, and needs to match up to Subaru’s reputation for versatile, fit for purpose SUVs.

Carl Zeiss FE 16-35mm f/4 Vario-Tessar ZA OSS Review

As Sony expands their full frame mirrorless lineup, the system as a whole becomes more complete, and one of the key pieces of that more encompassing lineup is the first native ultra-wide-angle lens.  In this case, it’s the Carl Zeiss 16-35mm f/4 OSS, which covers a great range in a pro-grade lens for Sony’s E-Mount. The 16-35mm f/4 covers a wide focal range from ultra-wide angle to moderate wide angle, and features an optical stabilizer to aid in hand-holding. The lens isn’t cheapat $1348 US, but promises outstanding optical quality and a top-notch build. In this 16-35mm review, we’ll see whether the Zeiss name holds up to its reputation for optical excellence.

ORIGIN MILLENNIUM (2016) REVIEW

Origin, founded by former Alienware employees in 2009, has become one of the mainstays in the custom PC market, joining the ranks of much older companies like Digital Storm, Falcon Northwest, and (of course) Alienware. Though it builds some of the most extravagant systems sold today, the company’s approach has been one of slow, steady evolution. Its product line-up has proven remarkably consistent – and none more consistent than the Millennium.

Though it’s not the largest system Origin builds, the Millennium has the broadest appeal. Its size, design, and available options give it incredible range. Entry-level versions, starting around $1,800, compete with mid-sized tower desktops. But visit the option list, and you can easily put together hardware that’s on par with the fastest the competition has to offer.

Louis Vuitton Voyager GMT Watch

The LVMH group that owns Louis Vuitton also owns a series of watch makers such as TAG Heuer, Bulgari, Zenith, and Hublot. It is arguable that Louis Vuitton as a brand doesn’t need to also make watches – but they do, and for the most part, they are very nicely done. Louis Vuitton’s best watch craft comes from their in-house La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton facility. The brand today makes a small number of watches (comparatively speaking) and they range from everyday models with quartz movements for women to very exotic tourbillon-based timepieces at the uppermost end of the spectrum. Today, we are looking at the new-for-2016 Louis Vuitton Voyager GMT watch collection.

Louis Vuitton Voyager GMT Watch Watch Releases

The Louis Vuitton Voyager GMT offers a novel case design which is somewhere between round and cushion-shaped. I haven’t worn it myself yet, but I am curious about how it looks on the wrist. Like the famous Tambour case that Louis Vuitton is known for, this new Voyager case design benefits from being both comfortable-looking and distinctive. It is hard to tell from images alone what it will look like on the wrist, but I’m open-minded and optimistic about it.
