Huawei’s rumored dual OS laptop may never see the light of day

Perhaps spurred by its recent good fortune in the smartphone market, Huaweiis being rumored to be interested in entering the PC space, particularly laptops. But it won’t settle for any old school laptop, of course. Those rumors make mention of a hybrid laptop, a.k.a 2-in-1 tablets, as well as of dual bootingWindows 10 and Android. The idea is definitely nothing new and we’ve heard the story, even the promise, a long, long time ago. And chances are, just like those old stories, Huawei’s tale might meet the same tragic end.

HTC might spin out Vive into its own company

The advice not to count your eggs before they hatch might not be that familiar in Taiwan. That or HTC is refusing to heed it because that might be exactly what its about to do with it still unlaunched virtual reality business. Despite the Vive VR headset still absent from the retail market, HTC CEO Cher Wang was rumored to set up a new subsidiary that will focus on virtual reality. The idea might have investor support, as HTC’s shares reportedly went up by 5.30% when word of the rumor broke out. Sadly, HTC has officially killed of the rumor, saying it won’t be doing anything like that at all.

Dell bumps up the Venue 8 Pro with new specs, new price

Dell has just quietly upgraded one of its more “unique” Windows devices. One of the first 8-inch Windows tablets in the market, Venue 8 Pro now has a younger but more powerful sibling with a name that takes a page from Apple’s branding guide. Simply called the “New Dell 8 Venue Pro”, the slab still sports an 8-inch screen, but this time boasts of a Full HD resolution, an upgraded Atom processor, and, in one instance, double the RAM of its predecessor. Sadly, it also boats of a higher price tag as well.

Apple addresses iPhone 6s battery issues

When you lead a busy and connected life, you rely on your phone for more than you’d probably care to admit. I tend to keep a pretty close eye on my phone’s battery level throughout the day when I’m not in the office, so that I’m not surprised by a dead phone at an inopportune time. But what happens when your phone doesn’t show the correct battery level? That’s something iPhone 6s users are finding out.

HTC rumored to have not one but two Nexus for 2016

While HTC still makes headlines in the smartphone market, and lately gaming too, these days, most of them haven’t really been positive. It almost seems as if the Taiwanese manufacturer’s glory days are over but, of course, that won’t stop it from trying to get that back. Perhaps inspired by the success, or at least popularity, of China’s Huawei and its Nexus 6P, HTC is rumored to be getting back into the Nexus game. More than that, it might actually be jumping in head first with two, yes two, Nexus smartphones later this year.

Xperia Z5, Z5 Compact US models won’t have fingerprint sensors

It is really hard to fathom Sony’s smartphone strategy and long-term plans these days. Publicly, it says it has no plans (yet) to leave the smartphone market, yet at the same time it seems to be doing everything it can to dig its own grave. While fans in the US were eagerly awaiting the arrival of Sony’s most recent, and better, flagships, their enthusiasm may have just been doused with cold water. Sony has confirmed that the US models of the Xperia Z5 andXperia Z5 Compact won’t have fingerprint sensors inside.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-CM10 “smart camera” ditches the phone

While many of the high end smartphones these days are getting closer to digital camera quality, some manufacturers like Samsung and Panasonic, are bridging the divide from the other side of the gap. Late 2014, Panasonic revealed the LUMIX DMC-CM1, a savvy looking compact digital camera that also boasted the same functionality as your Android smartphone. More than a year later, it is unveiling the DMC-CM10, a successor that, from the onset, looks largely unchanged from the previous model. But it differs in one crucial feature. Or misfeature if you want.

Apple Watch in March might just be a minor refresh

Everybody, or at least everybody in Apple’s camp, is anxiously awaiting Apple’s next move in the wearable market. Or rather, its next Apple Watch. Though it did fairly well in the market, especially during the holiday season, the currentApple Watch leaves much room for improvement. There seems to be some word that things are being set in motion for a potential March reveal. TechCrunch, however, argues that what we might see won’t be Apple Watch 2.0 but a far simpler refresh of Apple’s first ever smartwatch.

Microsoft: newer processors will only run Windows 10 or later

Microsoft has just revealed a new policy that once again tries to “encourage” users to upgrade to or embrace Windows 10, but this time it won’t be alone in making the push. It has roped in CPU makers, Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm to help steer users towards the latest Windows version. It will be doing so by a two-pronged approach. For end consumers, only Windows 10, or later versions, will be supported on the current, and next, generation of chips, starting with Intel’s Skylake. For Enterprise users, Microsoft is pulling the plug on critical updates by July 17, 2017.

Microsoft: newer processors will only run Windows 10 or later

Microsoft really wants you to switch to Windows 10 so bad that, at times, it makes some not so popular decisions that almost equate to shoving it down users’ throats. Most of the time, however, the company is dangling the promise of continued security updates as an incentive. Now it has found another way to push users, this time through hardware.

In a nutshell, Microsoft is saying that newer processors, staring from Intel’s “Skylake” and upcoming “Kaby Lake”, AMD’s “Bristol Ridge”, and Qualcomm’s “8996”, will only support the latest version of Window at the time of their launch. Which practically means Windows 10, of course. Those who did purchase a Skylake machine that came with only Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, how rare that might be, will still be supported until January 14, 2020 for Windows 7 and January 10, 2023 for Windows 8.1.

Enterprise users, on the other hand, the grace period is much shorter. After July 17, 2017, computers with Skylake processors won’t receive regular updates anymore. But don’t fret, they’ll still get “most critical security updates”, but if and only if they won’t affect the stability of those “legacy” systems.

Reception on this new policy is, unsurprisingly, mostly negative, with many seeing Microsoft once again forcing users to upgrade. And this time, it has gotten silicon makers to join the chorus. For the likes of Intel and AMD, that is somewhat of a good news as they won’t be hampered by having to support Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 if they don’t want to. For users, that leaves them with very little choice unless they opt to not receive timely and sometimes critical updates.

On a side note, Microsoft’s blog post mentions a Qualcomm chip as part of this new policy. Whether that is for Windows 10 Mobile only or hints of Windows 10 coming to ARM in full is something we still have to look out for.

2016 Jaguar F-Type S Coupe manual Review

Jaguar’s F-Type is a notoriously tail-happy car. California’s rarely-wet roads are notoriously slippery in the rain. What better time, then, than the depths of winter and El Niño’s finest to test the 2016 Jaguar F-Type S Coupe with its spanking new manual gearbox option?

Jaguar’s approach to the F-Type always seemed a little Riviera-first. It launched as a convertible only in 2013, with a coupe following on the following year, and until the current model year has been available only with an 8-speed paddle-shifting automatic.

Amazon Echo will can read your Kindle books aloud and for free

In the past weeks, we’ve seen Amazon push its Echo platform and Alexa personal assistant beyond its cylindrical home speaker. We’ve seen a fridge door speaker and Ford SYNC integration. We’ve also heard rumors of a more portable “Fox” version of Echo. This week, Amazon is putting the spotlight again on Alexa, but this time going back to its living room roots. Now Alexa can read you your books out loud, or softly rather, when you’d rather listen than read. That said, you’ll have to live with the fact that Alexa isn’t going to sound anything like your favorite narrator. Unless you happen to have a penchant for robotic narrators.

Lumia 650, debuting Feb 1, might be the only Lumia this year

It might be a bittersweet day for fans of Microsoft’s, formerly Nokia’s, Lumia line of smartphones when the company unveils the Lumia 650 on February 1. If the rumors are true, they will have a somewhat premium looking device with mid-range specs and probably a price tag to match. But if other rumors are also true, then this might also be the only Lumia that Microsoft will reveal this year, calling into question again the company’s ultimate strategy in the smartphone market. That is, if still has one.

Samsung’s upcoming fitness tracker looks more like a smartwatch

By now, Samsung already has half a dozen wearables under its belt. That means there’s an opportunity to make half a dozen more! We don’t know how many Samsung has planned for this year, but a certain fitness tracker has been leaked to be Samsung’s next big thing in wearables. Nicknamed “Triathlon”, the wearable strangely looks more like the Gear S2, a full smartwatch, rather than any traditional tracker, which is probably going to be a source of marketing and purchasing confusion for many.

8Bitdo Retro Cube Speaker is inspired by NES controller

After you’ve owned a few, most wireless speakers start to look alike. The particulars — color, shape — may vary a bit, but overall the designs are very similar.

That’s not the case with 8Bitdo’s new Retro Cube Speaker, a small wireless speaker with a design inspired by the original NES controller. Rather than featuring a touch panel or ordinary buttons, the speaker has a useable directional pad on the top.

Nexus 6P vs. LG V10 vs. Galaxy Note5 Comparison Review

1. Introduction

We’ve gathered three of the best Android phablets with a 5.7″ screen. All three hail from the East but instead of Zen calmness they epitomize the latest and greatest in mobile technology.

We will focus on several key areas, starting with the screen quality and battery life. Those are the best things about large phones – large screens and large batteries. We’ll also look at how their chipsets perform, how they do sound-wise (both with and without headphones) and we’ll finish off with a deep dive in camera quality.

GymWatch review : A muscle-building wearable that’s weak at the software knees

The GymWatch is proof that wearables can cater for niche audiences and with all the running and cycling-friendly trackers out there, it’s refreshing to find something that’s doing something different. If you want something to closely monitor weight training, this is one of your best options. But it’s not perfect. Especially on the software front. The iOS app is pretty much a no go zone right now. Like many crowdfunded projects, you’re wondering whether they’ll make be here for the long run, and I’ve seen enough to suggest the GymWatch is here to stay once it’s ironed out some issues.

In recent years motorcycle manufacturers have really turned their attention to grabbing young riders with budget-friendly offerings that appeal to the wants and needs of this key demographic.

Americans like big stuff. Big pickup trucks. Big houses. Big portions at the restaurant table. And, yes, big motorcycles too. Examples of the bigger-is-better trend in bikes are everywhere. Cruisers, sportbikes, dirt bikes… for good or ill, larger bikes sell and the trend has encroached on the popular Adventure market too.BMW has long defined the AT segment with its R1200GS, the popularity of which spurred several manufacturers to follow suit with their own 1200cc ADV platform.
