HUAWEI Ascend Mate2 Smart Phone – $299 Free & Clear Super Phone Review

HUAWEI Ascend Mate2 4G Smart Phone

Up until recently there were only a handful of smartphone manufactures that offered great phones in the United States. HTC, LG, Samsung are probably the biggest, or at least most popular Android based smart phone companies state side. HUAWEI is a company that is new to the states, but is no newcomer to the world of smart phones. HUAWEI has been big across the seas for quite some time now. Today we are fortunate enough to look at the first Smart phone from HUAWEI to hit state side, the HUAWEI Ascend Mate2. The Ascend Mate2 looks like your typical (if there is such a thing) smart phone, but one of the biggest advantages to the Ascend Mate2 is the price. For only $299 you can purchase the Mate2 free and clear of a contract!

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950 2GB Video Card Review – ASUS STRIX GTX 950

NVIDIA today launched their latest mainstream graphics card, the GeForce GTX 950, which features a suggested retail price of $159 and uses the GM206 Maxwell GPU. That GPU might sound familiar to those that keep up with the graphics card market as it is the same exact GPU that NVIDIA is using on the GeForce GTX 960 ($199). NVIDIA disabled some things to help differentiate this card from the GeForce GTX 960 and was able to bring it to market at a lower price point.

Windows 10’s face detection isn’t easily fooled by twins

Windows 10’s facial recognition is supposed to make it easy to sign into your PC whilemaintaining security, but just how good is it? Good enough that even your doppelganger might not get in, apparently. The Australian has conducted an informal test where it tried to fool Windows using sets of identical twins, and the software wasn’t tricked once — it had a problem logging in both twins in one instance, but it otherwise allowed only those individuals that had set up recognition in the first place. That was true even when the ‘evil’ twins attempted to spoof the camera by adjusting their hair or removing their glasses.

Lumia Camera works on non-Microsoft phones, with a catch

Microsoft vowed earlier this year that Lumia Camera would become the default camera app on all Windows 10 phones, but you won’t have to wait for the Windows 10 Mobile upgrade to give it a shot. The company has released a version of Lumia Camera that should run on any Windows Phone 8.1 device, not just those with Microsoft or Nokia badges. However, there’s a big gotcha.

As Windows Central warns, you won’t get Rich Capture features like high dynamic range — unfortunately, those are still the domain of recent Lumia handsets. You may see crashing, too, which hints that this wasn’t quite ready for prime time. Even so, you’re getting Windows Phone’s best-known photography app on your device of choice. It could be worth putting up with a few bugs to get early access.

Moto X Play reportedly coming to Verizon as the Droid Maxx 2

When Motorola unveiled the Moto X Play, it left Americans hanging. Would that combination of a big display, mid-tier specs and a huge battery ever reach the US? If you ask Phandroid, the answer is yes — although it might not show up in the form you’d like. The site’s sources claim that the Play will show up on Verizon later this year as the Droid Maxx 2, and that it’ll cost the same $300 contract-free as the regular model would if it were officially available in the US. There’s no clue as to whether or not it’ll be significantly different, although an earlier HellomotoHK leak pointed to Droid-specific backing. Sadly, the apparent leak suggests that you’ll still have to go to an importer (or wait for Verizon’s exclusive to end, if it ever does) to get the Play in its unaltered form.

Windows 10 claimed to phone home despite privacy settings

If you still don’t think that Windows 10 is a privacy disaster in the making, then this latest detective work might. At least, if you actually subscribe to it. According to Czech website aeronet.cz, Windows 10 has been doing some rather dubious communication with Microsoft servers in places and instances where it doesn’t make sense to do so. In short, even if you have disabled all possible privacy-infringing settings, the OS will still be sending some of your private data, without your knowledge and definitely without your consent.

LG G Pad II 10.1 revealed, no word on 8.0 sibling

LG does have a tablet in store for IFA 2015 next week, but it’s not the G Pad II 8.0 that suddenly popped up in South Korea. It is, however, also a G Pad II, LG’s next generation tablet family. The LG G Pad II 10.1 is, as the name suggests, larger and, to some degree, also better, though it might be a tad disappointing for those looking for a more premium tablet champion from the Korean manufacturer, perhaps an indicator of the growing unrest in the tablet market.

Apple will repair your blurry iPhone 6 Plus camera

If your iPhone 6 Plus photos have always looked a little less crisp than you expected, it might not be your eyes. Apple has confirmed that a small batch of its phablet-sized smartphone have a defective component, which has led to blurry shots with the iSight camera. The good news is that, since Apple is taking the blame, it’s also paying for the affected cameras to be swapped out for working replacements.

Microsoft starting to keep mum on Windows 10 update

There was once a time when obscurity was the name of the security game, but that practice has widely fallen out of fashion after being proven to be ultimately ineffective. It seems, however, that Microsoft is doing its best to revive that tradition. Although it claims to be not doing anything differently, descriptions of its Windows 10 updates are becoming less and less descriptive. Worse, even the KB articles that supposedly give more in-depth information are now also less verbose, leading some to speculate what Microsoft is hiding.

Nike+ FuelBand SE Review After 3 Months

It’s been 3 months since I’ve been using the Nike’s FuelBand SE, which I bought in Las Vegas’s Nike store back in December.

This is the first wearable I’ve owned, I love it very much. I use it everyday, wherever I go, it’s always with me. Since I got it, I haven’t used my watches.

The FuelBand SE is an activity tracker device where you wear around wrist like a bracelet, it displays time, your steps, NikeFuel, it’s something like how many calories/energies you burned, but combining all activities throughout the day as fuel which makes working out like a game and fun (You can display how many calories burned separetely in setting), it can also track your sleep and wirelessly sync with your iPhone or computer via Bluetooth 4.0, you can check your detail information of activities and datas, sharing it with your friends on its app, Nike+ Fuel. If you are a social person and looking for a fun way to keep in fit, then the FuelBand SE is for you. It definitely helps me in fit.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge vs LG G Flex 2: Features Compared

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and LG G Flex 2 are two of the new phones that have been introduced at MWC 2015. Both have unique designs with the S6 Edge’s curved side display and the G Flex 2’s curved body.

In most areas, the Galaxy S6 Edge wins. The phone comes out on top spec-by-spec and early reports claim the curved display on both sides adds functionality, improves design, and enhances content viewing. At least compared to its predecessor, the G Flex 2 is a big jump and it does compete against the S6 Edge despite having lower specs.

Final Fantasy VII for iOS Review

What do you remember about 1997? I remember a time before the iPhone or iPad, a period when the Internet boom was in full swing, and computer shows were a key part of my life. I also remember a video game that changed my opinion of role-playing games forever: Final Fantasy VII. Back then, the game was a monster hit and today, it lives on in my heart (and the hearts of millions around the globe) as one of the best RPGs to ever grace the PlayStation. Final Fantasy VII is without exaggeration, a masterpiece.

The Problem with Touch controls in the Automotive Industry

You don’t have to be an automotive expert to know that tech is coming to the automotive market in a huge way. Technology in cars is so pervasive these days that many tech firms like Google, Apple, and Microsoft are fighting to get their foot in the door first. One big byproduct of tech firms moving into the automotive industry is that they bring ideas about what works in the tech market with smartphones and tablets and try to apply that to the automotive market.

Verizon is still ‘evaluating’ support for Samsung Pay

We hope you weren’t planning to use your Verizon-badged Galaxy S6 or Note 5 withSamsung Pay on September 28th… you might be disappointed. Big Red notes that it’s still in the “process of evaluating” Samsung Pay while AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and US Cellular have already pledged support. This doesn’t rule out Verizon offering Samsung Pay on launch, but we wouldn’t count on it given how carrier approval processes are seldom swift — just ask anyone who waited months for a Verizon-ready Nexus 6.

ASUS makes a Zenfone 2 with a whopping 256GB of storage

Smartphones with more than 128GB of storage are still extremely rare, but they just became a little more accessible… if you live in Brazil, at least. ASUS has unveiled a Delxue Special Edition of the Zenfone 2 that includes a cavernous 256GB of storage.

You won’t be hunting for a microSD card any time soon if you pick this up, folks. You’ll also have the choice of carbon fiber- or crystal-like backs instead of the more pedestrian shells of the usual Zenfone 2. This special run arrives in Brazil this September.

ADATA XPG SX930 SSD review: Nothing special about performance numbers, but it has a 5-yr warranty

ADATA is a known name in the memory and storage segment of the PC components business.  Recently the company released the XPG SX930 series of SSDs which will replace the SX900 series. XPG stands for Xtreme Performance Gear and this series is addressed at the gamer and overclocker crowd.

This series comes in three storage variants: 120GB, 240GB and 480GB. We tested the 240GB variant and here are our observations.

Build and Features: 7.5/10

The ADATA XPG SX930 comes in a metallic body with a black brush metal finish and has a 7mm z-height form factor. The box comes with a 2.5-inch to 3.5-inch desktop adapter as well as a laptop SSD spacer giving you the option to slot the SSD in either configurations. It comes with a 5-year warranty period.

IMG_20150817_122459238

Opening up the SSD reveals a half-height PCB board which has four 16nm Micron 128Gbit synchronous MLC plus NAND chips on either side. The SSD controller is present on the other side of the PCB than the one facing you as you open the SSD. It comes with a SATA 6 Gbps interface. ADATA has employed the JMicron JMF670H controller, which is a 4-channel controller with a single 32-bit ARM 968 processor. Below the JMicron controller, you have the Nanya 256MB DDR3 SDRAM. Thanks to the use of JMicron controller, you also get a pseudo-SLC (pSLC) acceleration layer called the Write Booster, which is around 8GB for the 240GB drive.

IMG_20150817_123116

One of the limitations of this controller is that it can only support up to 512GB capacity SSDs. The total capacity available to the user with the SX930 240GB SSD is 223GB. ADATA claims that you can extract up to 3,000 program / erase cycles with its NAND.

You also get access to ADATA’s SSD Toolbox and you can download the Acronis True Image utility to clone your existing hard drive with your OS and data on to the SSD.

Test Setup

Processor: Intel Core i7-4770K

Motherboard: ASRock Z87M Extreme4

RAM: 2 x 4GB GSkill RipjawsX

OS Drive: Intel SSD, 80GB

PSU: Cooler Master 800W Silent Pro Gold

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Performance: 7/10

ATTO Benchmark

This is the most popular storage benchmarking tool and allows you to check read and write speeds across various transfer sizes and queue depths. ATTO is also a good tool to check for the marketing spiel of SSD makers where they publish sequential read and write speeds on the packaging.

ATTO (1)

ATTO

The ATTO benchmarks are in line with the stated sequential speeds of the ADATA XPG SX930, only the sequential read speed is off by 10MB/s, but that’s not a huge margin. The sequential write speed crosses the 460MB/s mark.

AS SSD

AS SSD is a benchmark tool built specifically for SSDs which uses incompressible data and calculates sequential and random read and write speeds and gives an overall score at the end. It also gives you the input/output operations per second or IOPS for each of those tests which is interesting. Apart from this you can also perform Copy Test where it creates test folders for large files simulating ISO, programs and games and measures the transfer speeds and duration.

ASSSD`

ASSSD seq

ASSSD random

ASSSD iops

AS SSD tests shows that the ADATA SX930 SSD is definitely slower than its peers, although not by huge margin. The 4K random write test is at par with Samsung 840 Pro as well as Corsair Neutron GTX SSDs and this could be attributed to the pSLC acceleration layer. ADATA hasn’t claimed any IOPS count number as we see with most SSDs, and it seems evident from the numbers the reason behind it.

PC Mark 7

PC Mark 7 is a complete PC benchmarking solution for Windows 7 having a dedicated Storage test module. It is a collection of workloads that isolate the performance of your PC’s SSD. The Secondary Storage test allows you to test drives other than your system drive. It simulates operations such as importing pictures, gaming, starting applications and so on.

PCMark

Anvil Storage Utilities

Anvil Storage utilities is another versatile SSD benchmark tool which besides having an in-built SSD tool, also allows you the option to tweak the settings. Just like the AS SSD benchmark, you get a read, write and an overall score. The tables are more in-depth as it gives you response time, IOPS, MB read/written and finally the transfer speeds in MB/s. You can perform threaded I/O read and write tests where you can adjust block size as well as the queue depth. We ran the SSD test using 100 per cent incompressible and 46 per cent compression.

Anvil 2

Anvil 1

Verdict and Price in India

The ADATA XPG SX930 240GB SSD gives a decent performance. There was nothing that stood out from what we have seen in the past. The IOPS was one of the lowest we have seen in recent times. However, the drive comes at an MRP of Rs 11,500 but it has a market operating price of Rs 8,050 which gives around Rs 36.09 per GB. It is around Rs 1500 lower than the better performing Kingston HyperX Savage SSD. If you can spend that much, we would recommend the Kingston SSD. Else the SX930 SSD  with its 5-year warranty is a good drive to consider in your mid-range and gaming builds.
