Davosa Titanium Chronograph Watch Review

Davosa is a Swiss/German watch maker whose main modus operandi is to use Swiss movements with good quality “homage” watch designs meant to satisfy the needs of watch lovers looking for particular styles but not wanting to pay the higher prices of most Swiss watch brands. There are other companies like Davosa out there, and honestly, there are a lot of good things to say about them. My first mechanical watch ever was from a company called Marcello C. which operates in a similar way. While you do get watches with “derivative” designs, you often have extremely impressive quality at what is often an exceptionally fair price. Early experiences with brands such as Davosa allowed me to gain a generally high esteem for most German watch companies.

MICROSOFT SURFACE PRO 4 REVIEW

The original Surface Pro was bulky. Its battery was limited. The keyboard was annoying, the display wasn’t great, and performance was just okay. It was expensive. Worst of all, it was forced to run Windows 8, an awkward operating system poorly suited for dedicated touchscreen use.

Yet, for all its faults, the Surface Pro was also revolutionary.

If Microsoft was as stodgy as its reputation suggests, it would’ve given up on the Pro and set its sights on some other pie-in-the-sky project. Instead, it hunkered down, analyzed the problem, and tried again. And again. And again. After just two and a half years we’re now on the fourth iteration. On average, a new Pro has arrived every eight months.

HYT H1 Full Gold Watch Hands-On

Ever since HYT originally debuted the H1 watch back in 2012 (here), its seminal “hydromechanical horological” device has remained the hallmark piece of the brand despite the introduction of other models such as the H2, H3, and H4. The HYT H1 remains one of the best “all-around” watches from the modern luxury timepiece brand which focuses on contemporary designs and… liquid. With all that said, this HYT H1 “Full Gold” is, I believe, the first fully gold-cased version of the H1. With a watch whose case has been rendered in everything from titanium to resin filled with beach sand, how does the HYT H1 fare in solid gold?

2016 Lexus GS F in Super-Sedan Showdown with BMW, Audi, and Cadillac

The 2016 Lexus GS F breaks new ground for the Japanese luxury brand, giving it its fire-breathing V8 mid-size sport sedan in a bid to contend with the European all-stars that have long dominated this corner of the automotive industry. At first glance, everything appears to be in order: 467 horsepower from a 5.0-liter eight-cylinder monster (shared with the RC F coupe), the ability to sprint to 60-mph in a quick 4.5 seconds, and the kind of extroverted good looks that do the companies trapezoidal grille justice (especially when ordered in eye-searing orange).

Richard Mille RM 67-01 Automatic Extra Flat Watch Hands-On

The 2016 Richard Mille RM 67-01 Automatic Extra Flat watch is what a quasi-entry-levelRichard Mille watch looks like these days. Thin on the wrist and bristling with brand DNA, the RM 67-01 (aka RM67 or RM67-01) isn’t by any means cheap, but is isn’t over $100,000 either (well, some versions are). It’s also very comfortable and cool, with its distinctly modern lines and emphasis on showing as much of the movement and fancy Richard Mille bridge-work as possible.

Gigabyte P35W v5 review

Gigabyte’s P35W v5 gaming laptop costs a reasonable $1,877 (about £1,300, or AU$2,599), but the firm has packed an awful lot in: high-end Nvidia and Intel hardware, an M.2 SSD drive and a 4K display so that you can chew through all of the dazzling titles on our best 4K games list. In theory, anyway.

The P35W’s modest price means this isn’t the best-looking gaming laptop. Its metal body doesn’t show off with bright lights or dramatic design: it’s dark and plain, with sensible angles and a few unsightly seams. It’s not as striking as theAorus X5 v5 or the similarly-priced Acer Predator 15.

JBL Clip 2 review

JBL’s Clip speakers have been among our favorite micro Bluetooth speakers, and the new Clip 2, which comes in five color options and costs $60 (£50, AU$80), is also a winner.

The Clip 2 has couple of notable changes from its predecessor. For starters, it’s fully waterproof. It also comes equipped with a real metal carabiner instead the plastic “clip” mechanism found on the Clip and Clip+. And finally, battery life has been improved to eight hours from five.

Like those earlier models, this one has a nifty integrated audio cable for devices that don’t support Bluetooth, and there’s a built-in speakerphone that works reasonably well.

Vacheron Constantin Overseas Watch In Blue Hands-On

Watches & Wonders 2015, Vacheron Constantin released this new limited edition blue version of the Overseas – a high-end sport watch collection that I love to cover from time to time. Earlier in 2015, I spent some time revisiting the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph collection (also in blue) here. That Overseas Chronograph and this three-hand Overseas are “sister models” because they both feature steel cases and matte blue dials with matching blue rubber straps. Of course, a few months later in January 2016, Vacheron Constantin released an entirely new Overseas collection with the Overseas Simple Date and the Overseas Chronograph. While those are the newest models, there is still demand for some of the other legacy Vacheron Constantin Overseas collection… So let’s get a bit more acquainted with the more basic Vacheron Constantin Overseas watch by looking at this reference 47040/000A-9008.

Abarth 595C v Volkswagen Polo GTI Comparison

The arrival of the new 2016 Abarth 595 has dropped the ownership doorway into Italy’s famed scorpion shield from mid-$30k down to a basement-level $27,500 list price. Stripping back the frills, while liberally pilfering from the marque’s go-fast parts bin, this ‘regular 595‘ is the type of cut-priced sweet spot many buyers having been hankering for. And, handily, it also adds some newfound shine on the performance range based off the now ageing Fiat 500 format.

Abarth 595C v Volkswagen Polo GTI Comparison

Fortuitously, the cheapest Abarth lines squarely up against the 2016 Volkswagen Polo GTI, the German company’smost-affordable small performance hatchback, which itself dropped to new fiscal lows mid-last year with the introduction of a conventional manual version for $27,490 plus on-roads. Yep, there’s just a tenner between them.

Giroptic 360cam Review : Killer Accessories

The Giroptic 360cam — one of the few cameras to capture a nearly complete spherical image — records video from three sensors and stitches them together in-camera, eliminating a time-consuming step. This camera is also water- and drop-resistant, and has a removable base that can be swapped out for different accessories. However, although the Giroptic 360cam’s video quality is good, it’s not the best.

Vivo unveils its X7 and X7 Plus flagship phones

Even though Chinese phone manufacturer Vivo unveiled the X6 and X6 Plus in December, the guts of both phones were rather underwhelming. Vivo hopes to change that a mere six months later with the X7 and X7 Plus.

Design-wise, neither phone really breaks new ground — the X7 and X7 Plus feature aluminum on the back and glass on the front, with the aluminum interrupted by antenna lines and a home button that doubles as a fingerprint scanner below the screen.

Galaxy Note 7 Rumors : Summer Release, Curved Screen

We’re about a month away from getting our hands on the next Galaxy Note if rumors about an August release for the updated phablet pan out. But we may already know what the new phone looks like thanks to some leaked marketing images of the upcoming Note.

Credit: Image via @EvLeaks

The leaks come courtesy of Evan Blass, a usually reliable leaker who posted what he said are final marketing renders for the Note on his Twitter account. The image, which shows three models, reveals a new iris scanner next to the phone’s front camera and confirms a new name for the phone — it’ll be the Galaxy Note 7.

That means Samsung is jumping from the Note 5 straight to the Note 7, a leap that had first been reported last month by South Korea’s ETNews. With the name change, Samsung hopes to bring the naming of the Note phablets in line with the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge.

Arnold & Son Eight-Day Royal Navy Watch Hands-On

While it isn’t glitzed up with new technology or a fancy story, the new Arnold & Son Eight-Day Royal Navy is most certainly a sleeper hit of Baselworld 2016 with an attractive dial, good-looking and useful movement, and all-around decent price in three new steel-case models.

Arnold & Son isn’t shy about saying that the Eight-Day Royal Navy is their own personal entrant into the “marine chronometer-inspired” wrist watch arena. This segment isn’t super crowded, but other brands like Ulysse Nardin tend to have more years of experience in producing watches like this. With that said, if you look at the minor details, then you’ll notice that Arnold & Son is indeed bringing its own unique marine chronometer-style watch to the table with the Arnold & Son Eight-Day Royal Navy.

The Intel SSD 540s (480GB) Review

Introduction

This year, Intel’s decision to release an affordable mainstream SATA SSD has led them to use a Silicon Motion controller. But “affordable” by today’s standards means using 15/16nm TLC NAND flash, and Intel doesn’t make that either. They chose not to invest in the 16nm node at IMFT (their flash manufacturing partnership with Micron) so Intel has to buy their flash on the open market.

The result is the Intel 540s, using Silicon Motion’s new SM2258 controller and SK Hynix 16nm TLC NAND. The SM2258 controller is the successor to the SM2256, Silicon Motion’s first controller designed for use with TLC flash. SM2258 builds on that design by moving from 55nm fabrication to 40nm and incorporating several hardware tweaks including more flexible SLC caching and support for 3D NAND.

Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 Lens Review

Sony has been cranking out new lenses in 2016, with a total of 5 new lenses announced over the first 5 months of the year.  In addition to the long-awaited fast aperture G Master line, Sony also released two options that were more modest in aperture: the 70-300mm f/4-5.6 and this lens: the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8.  Sony already has a Zeiss branded f/1.8 normal prime in the truly excellent Zeiss FE 55mm f/1.8, but the 50mm is intended to fill the role of Sony’s ‘nifty fifty:’ a low-cost lens with good image quality that provides an inexpensive way to get a faster lens.  While the $250 price tag of the 50mm f/1.8 is a bit higher than the 50mm f/1.8 lenses from Canon and Nikon, it’s only a quarter of the asking price for Sony’s premium 55mm f/1.8.  Let’s find out how it stacks up.

PRIMARE PRE60/ATC SCM150 ASL SYSTEM

Not all component combinations are predictable. Sometimes you find an amp and speakers that despite coming from different schools of audio thought seem to gel in ways that few would have expected. On this occasion, the amplifier and speaker in question are in the form of the mighty ATC SCM150 ASL, a ‘fridge on a stand’ scale loudspeaker with a hefty power amplifier on its back. But the preamplifier – though that name is insufficient to describe the wealth of features on offer – is from Scandinavian electronics experts Primare. And as a combo it works with considerable aplomb.

The Primare PRE60 is the company’s flagship preamplifier. It’s built to a very high standard with typically Nordic restraint in the styling department, not that the two tone fascia isn’t striking as a result. The PRE60 has many functions but you have to scroll through the input names in a cool, clean sans serif font to realise how diverse they are. It is an analogue preamplifier with single ended and balanced in- and outputs, it is a digital-to-analogue converter with S/PDIF and USB inputs, and finally it is a network streamer that is controlled by with Primare’s own app for iOS and Android. All you need to add is a NAS drive packed with your favourite tunes and you have a complete front end that is not only formed of one box but is also very nice to operate. You can use either the app or a remote handset to control input selection and volume and the OLED display is so clear that it’s legible across the room.

Aerix Drones Black Talon Micro FPV Beginner Racing Drone Review

Drone racing is a hot new sport, where high-powered drones fly around a course, competing for the fastest speed. It can be an expensive hobby, though: A professional racing drone can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars. For newbies to the sport, the $139 Aerix Drones Black Talon Micro FPV Beginner Racing Drone is a cheaper way to get started. While it may not be as fast as its professional cousins, it’s a zippy little quadcopter with some interesting features.

Panasonic TX-40DX600B review

A 40-inch screen with Ultra HD 4K resolution that costs just £500/$750? That sounds too good to be true. But the Panasonic Viera TX-40DX600B is real and it promises the latest picture technology wrapped up in a small package that doesn’t cost a small fortune.

But first, we have a couple of questions: is a 40in screen too small to fully appreciate the pixel-popping awesomeness of 4K? And does this TV strike the perfect balance between size, price and top tech?

Vodafone Smart Platinum 7 Review : Power and elegance without the price tag

When it comes to carrier-branded smartphones, the expectation is rarely high. In most cases, it seems just an effort from the network operators to peddle out cheap, unimpressive devices with their branding on them. Customer experience and device quality, or value for money, comes second.

But now there’s the Vodafone Smart Platinum 7 which, on paper, and in our experience, seems to be great value for money. Is it the one device to turnaround our presumptions?

There’s a lot to like about the Vodafone Smart Platinum 7’s design. It’s essentially a metal frame sandwiched between two sheets of Corning GorillaGlass. The glass finish on the back is particularly attractive with its Obsidian-like black colouring and subtle carbon fibre pattern underneath. It looks and feels like a premium phone. What’s more, the glass has some attractive, subtle curves to its edges.

Audeze ups the ante, again, with the EL-8 headphones

The high-end headphone scene never ceases to amaze me. Competition is fierce, especially at the upper reaches of the high-end, $1,000+ headphones that are still getting better all the time. Not only that, the Hifiman HE400S ($299, £219, AU$419) is easy to recommend to folks who want to get a taste of high-end sound without breaking the bank. It’s a great headphone for the money.

audeze_el8_review

I initially reviewed the EL-8 in 2015, but Audeze has since made a slew of running changes, including new thinner and lighter in weight diaphragms. The original andcurrent EL-8planar-magnetic diaphragms are huge (100mm), that’s more than double the size of most conventional dynamic headphone drivers, and their impedance is rated at an easy-to-drive 30 ohms. The headphones build quality feels remarkably substantial, it weighs 1 pound (480 grams), and the cables are user-replaceable. I’m reviewing the closed-back version, which does a great job sealing out external noise. There’s also an open-back EL-8 that sounds similar, but lets you hear the world around you. The open- and closed-back EL-8s sell for the same price: $699, £599, AU$1,149, and the headphones are made in California.

Top 10 best USB flash drives in the UK for 2016

USB memory sticks (or flash drives as they’re often known) are essential to how we consume data on our PCs these days. If you want to shift some huge pictures or videos around, then the best option is to throw them on a USB stick or a memory card – if you’re lucky to have a reader around.

Need to backup your most important documents? Same again (although the cloud is now gaining ground but near useless if you’re on the train or on the move). Game saves and even games (we’re staying firmly on the right side of the law here)? USB stick. You get the idea.

USB memory sticks are small, spacious and incredibly versatile. We use them in the office all the time, for moving everything from screenshots to benchmark suites. And each of us has several smaller drives littering our desks (thank you, PR agencies).

BlackBerry Vienna/Mercury: What’s the story so far?

Almost as soon as the BlackBerry Priv – the company’s first Android phone – launched in 2015, there were rumours circulating about another Android-powered smartphone. At the time it was code-named Vienna, which made complete sense following on from the Priv which was code-named Venice.

Since then, the phone was referred to with code-name Rome, and more recently, Mercury. While naming is important to get a sense of this device’s story, it’s easy to get confused when there are three names being bandied around for asingle phone.

phpega6s4

In true BlackBerry style, the Mercury looks to offer a physical keyboard, a uniquely BlackBerry offering when paired with the Android operating system.

Since the early “Vienna” days, there hasn’t been too much to go on in terms of rumours, but we’re slowly getting to grips with BlackBerry’s lineup for 2016/17.
