Sony Alpha 7s II arrives with 4K video, ultra-high ISO

Sony has just announced its latest camera, the Alpha A7s II. As a follow-up to the original Alpha A7s, the new full-frame mirrorless shooter maintains the same 409,600 ISO setting, but adds support for internal 4K video recording. The first model relied on an external recorder for 4K, making it the camera’s biggest weakness. Those who passed on the original A7s may find themselves tempted to upgrade, as the new model includes several other refinements in addition to better video features.

Honda Project 2&4 concept has the heart of a MotoGP racer and four wheels

Honda is showing off one of the coolest concept cars it has unveiled in a long time and the car is called the Project 2&4 concept. It’s about as close as you can get to a motorcycle with four wheels with a bit of F1 car thrown in the mix. The body of the car is suggestive of Honda F1 cars from the ‘60s, but its heart is pure MotoGP.

Power for the concept comes from a 1.0L V4 from the Honda RC213V MotoGP racing bike tuned for road use. That means 212hp and 87 lb-ft of torque with a redline of 14,000 rpm. The power goes to the road via a dual-clutch 6-speed transmission.

NVIDIA unsurprisingly says SHIELD is better than Apple TV

When Apple revealed the Apple TV, it wasn’t only cable companies that were being put on notice. With a new emphasis on living room gaming, the device is also giving gaming hardware makers something to worry about,. While the big consoles like the PlayStation and the Xbox probably don’t need to sweat even a little, smaller ones, particularly those banking on Android TV, might be feeling the heat. So it’s not surprising that almost immediately, NVIDIA has come out with a blog post saying that its SHIELD Android TV is a better option.

Sony now backtracking on phones’ underwater prowess

Sony’s smartphones have traditionally centered upon three or four key strengths: the OmniBalance design, two-day battery life, high-quality camera sensor, and waterproof rating.

Two of those, design and camera, have now been challenged, even refuted, and now it seems that Sony itself is trying to debunk another one. The Japanese OEM has updated the wording on some of its support pages to warn users not to use their smartphones underwater, despite their top IP68 dust and waterproof rating, conflicting with their own previous marketing campaigns.

Jaguar Land Rover researching electric Drive Module tech for future EVs, hybrids

Jaguar Land Rover has announced that it is researching new low and zero emission powertrain technologies for cars and SUVs of the future. As part of the research, the automaker has created a trio of concept_e demonstrators to show off the research they are working on including high performance electric drive modules (eDM) that are being developed in house by Jaguar Land Rover.

The most notable aspect of these new eDM devices is that they are capable of producing twice the power and torque of any electric motor-generator in production today. eDM tech can be inserted between the engine and transmission to create MHEV or PHEVs or used alone to create a pure EV.

PIN-changing Android ransomware spreading in the US

Before you get all riled up, this isn’t yet another Android vulnerability like Stagefright. This is your run of the mill malware installed through social engineering or carelessness, but one that has far graver ramifications than other ransomware. Discovered by researchers from security company ESET, the Android/Lockerpin.A ransomware goes the extra mile to actually change your device’s PIN code in such a way that trying to reset the PIN will lock the user, and ironically the attacker too, from the device completely, with no recourse other than a factory reset.

Periscope updated with landscape viewing and broadcasting

Live streaming app Periscope no longer forces users to broadcast or watch video in portrait orientation. An update for both iOS and Android has just been released that lets users rotate their device to stream and watch broadcasts in landscape. Even better is that those watching from the web on the desktop will automatically see video the way it’s being filmed. As one would expect, users just need to rotate their device to make their streams full-screen.

NuYu Personal Activity Monitor and Wireless Scale review

The best part about this budget, beginner fitness tracker is how easy it is to use. You don’t have to push any buttons or input any data, other than at set up. You can sync it once per day to get an overview of your activity and goals and it’s all easy to understand. It is also so light that we could sleep with it on every night without it being bothersome. It’s priced low enough to be a decent device for those wanting to get their feet wet in the activity tracker category. The screen’s responsiveness is shabby, at best, but doesn’t stop you from being able to use it. We believe this is a viable device for anyone looking to get into wearables, but have minimal fitness needs. The wireless scale, too, is nothing special but very cheap. What could make the NuYu system really great is the incoming coaching plans so watch this space.

Electric La-La Land: BMW and Mercedes-Benz battle for the battery-powered heart of West Los Angeles.

In Los Angeles County, and particularly on the ocean side of the I-405 freeway, eco-awareness is the highest virtue. The Tesla Model S is the halo car, and most cabs are Priuses. ChargePoint.com’s online locator lists a staggering 49 electric-car chargers in Century City, the 176-acre high-end westside district built on what was once the back lot of 20th Century Fox. That’s 15 more chargers than the whole 49.5-million-acre state of Nebraska can claim.

How to be sure Photos for Mac stores full-resolution images

Brian Cahoon is concerned about where his photos and other media live. As a former Aperture user, he used its vault feature to back up his library. But with iCloud Photo Library, Apple gives you the option to always keep high-resolution copies locally.

I don’t think I can just copy the library since some may only be in the cloud at full resolution and the export feature doesn’t create folders for years/months–it’s just a dump of all files in one folder. I have 280GB of photos going back to 2001. Any ideas on how to get a full, verified copy of my photos on a backup drive?

Meizu MX4 review

Everyone you know that owns a smartphone probably owns one that runs Android or iOS. There may be a few rebels with Windows Phone — or a few has-beens with BlackBerrys — but the chances aren’t very high. To stand out in the mobile world today, you’re going to have to consider something else. Ubuntu Mobile wants to be one of them.

Like the relationship between Windows Phone and Windows on the desktop, Ubuntu Mobile is Canonical’s mobile edition of its operating system, and a step towards the company’s goal of providing a single OS that works on every type of device. It has been around for a while, but the OS is finally being sold on a phone worthy of closer examination. The device is the Meizu MX4, which until now was better known (in China, at least) for running Android.

HP ENVY SPECTRE X360 Review

The past few years have been a tumultuous period for Hewlett-Packard’s PC group. While the company remains one of the largest manufacturers globally, and is king of the North American market, it has struggled with tight profit margins and fickle consumer demand. That’s why HP has decided to split into two entities, only one of which – HP, Inc. – will handle consumer PCs.

This notebook is an example of how competitive the premium laptop market has become.

Fujifilm XQ2 review: Solid low-light pocket camera with classic styling

THE GOOD

The Fujifilm XQ2 is an attractive advanced compact with a fast f1.8 maximum aperture and good low-light photo quality. It has a satisfying mix of manual and automatic shooting options and plenty of things with which to experiment. There’s ample direct control over settings given the camera’s small size.

THE BAD

The XQ2 has limited Wi-Fi functionality; no built-in neutral density filter; it’s essentially the same as its predecessor, the XQ1; and video quality is just OK.

Acer Switch 10 E review: A small hybrid with extra storage

THE GOOD

The Acer Switch 10 E doesn’t cost a lot, has a simple magnetic hinge to connect its tablet half, and packs a generous extra 500GB hard drive into the keyboard.

THE BAD

The 10.1-inch screen looks even smaller surrounded by a thick black bezel. The system is so top heavy it easily tips over, and the touchscreen is not always as responsive as it should be.
