How to spec a Volkswagen Polo

The latest Volkswagen Polo has a tough job on its hands, because it has to compete against both the Seat Ibiza – which we named as our Small Car of the Year at the 2018 What Car? awards – and the Skoda Fabia, which was our previous class champion. And that’s not to mention the UK’s best-selling car, the Ford Fiesta.

Still, the Polo makes a good case for itself, with quiet road manners, a comfortable ride, generous interior space and interior quality which puts some other cars in this class to shame.

As always, our full 16-point review can tell you how well the Polo fares, but if you’re already sold on the idea of a Polo, which version should you buy? We recommend Volkswagen’s 94bhp 1.0-litre petrol engine for its peppy performance, which feels perfectly suited to urban roads yet isn’t outmatched on the motorway. Our favourite trim is SE, which gets you 15in alloy wheels, a leather steering wheel and electric rear windows. The Polo’s options list includes many luxuries that you normally wouldn’t expect to find in this class, so here’s what we’d choose.
