Ultraportable laptops are great when you need to put together a presentation for work, crunch some numbers or binge-watch your favorite Netflix shows. But graphically taxing games like Destiny 2 and Battlefield V and support for VR headsets such as the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and HTC Vive Pro are out of reach. Or are they?

If you have a laptop with a Thunderbolt 3 port, there’s a good chance that you can attach an external GPU (eGPU), which allows you to get the benefits of an Nvidia or AMD graphics card, without carrying a bulky workstation or gaming notebook. And now that the mobile version of Nvidia’s powerful new RTX graphics cards is now shipping in laptops (check out our reviews of the Alienware Area-51, MSI GT75 Titan and MSI GS75 Stealth), you can get a serious boost by connecting your mobile system to an eGPU with an RTX desktop card and get immersed in stunning 4K games.
