Add up the annual improvements to the Volvo XC90 since 2016, and you get one normal mid-cycle refresh.

Between being introduced as all-new and being replaced with another generation, most car models undergo what the industry calls a “mid-cycle refresh” about halfway through their useful lives. Typically, an automaker tweaks a vehicle’s styling, adds a few new features, and maybe addresses a few minor shortcomings in a bid to keep its aging product fresh. The Volvo XC90 isn’t following that industry-standard path.
