Say “hybrid,” and most people’s minds will jump to an image of the Toyota Prius or some similarly tadpole-shaped, oddball vehicle. The phenomenon, known as trademark erosion, is similar to when everyone says “Kleenex” to describe a facial tissue, even though countless brands produce tissues; the word and likeness of a Prius dominates hybrids’ shared image. Really, however, there are far more hybrids that are adapted from and look just like ordinary, not-weird, stablemates.
