Google might actually be the best friend for open-source software right now

Technology giants are now more committed than ever to open source software, with ‘big tech’ contributions to GitHub up four-fold compared with six years ago, new research has claimed. A report from Aiven found Google seems to be the key driver in the industry’s commitment to open source, with monthly commits up 21% year-on-year as of July 2022.  The research suggests that Google has overtaken Microsoft in its number of active GitHub contributors for the first time in around three years, with 4,643 contributors vs Microsoft’s 4,394, and furthermore, Google is expected to overtake Microsoft in its number of monthly commits for the first time ever in the coming half a year.
