Garmin Vivoactive 3 review : A superb sports watch, an average smartwatch

The Garmin Vivoactive 3 is a big improvement on the HR in design that also beefs up its sports tracking. Not only that, but it’s better as an all-day health tracking device, and paired with the new Connect app, Garming is giving Fitbit, Apple et al more to worry about. As a sport watch, it’s a beaut. As a smartwatch, Garmin still has work to do.

Like other wearables we’ve seen arrive this year, the Garmin Vivoactive 3 is trying to be more than just a fitness watch. Fitbit is the best example of this, having fully shifted to the smartwatch category with the Ionic. Apple went the other way, beginning as a smartwatch that’s edged more and more into fitness since.

Garmin has always been a top name in sports and fitness, so much so that it managed to squeeze TomTom out. But with the Vivoactive 3, Garmin is pushing harder to make this a watch you’ll wear all day, which means a new, better design that’s a world away from the Garmin Vivoactive HR, and things like its new mobile payment platform Garmin Pay.
