A GUIDE TO SELLING YOUR OLD CAR TO A JUNKYARD

Posted on July 5, 2021August 27, 2023 By Wolverine

If you’ve spent sleepless nights thinking what to do with your old and useless car, there’s a simple solution for it. You would not have to worry about it wasting space and creating unhygienic conditions. Instead, you can sell it to a junkyard and make profit out of it.

Learning how to sell a car to a junkyard is quite a simple affair. This becomes especially important when you have a car that no longer runs and is simply a source of stress or trouble.

You can get the car assessed at a junkyard to see how much it is worth and expect a fair price for it.

How to go about sending off an old car to the junkyard

You need to follow a couple of essential steps to get rid of that old vehicle and make a quick buck. These critical steps are explained below.

Step 1 – Locate the car title

This is the first as well as the most crucial step when selling your old car. You need to take the car title along to the junkyard to prove the vehicle belongs to you. Most junkyards won’t buy your vehicle unless you can prove it is yours. Once the deal is finally through, you will have to sign the title over to the junkyard. Failing this, you will be the car owner even after having rid yourself of it.

Step 2 – Assess the value of the car

To do this, you need to take an inventory of the car parts. Make a note of which ones work and which ones don’t. Also, note any repairs that can fix the car enough to get it in running condition. All this will help in determining the value of your old vehicle and what it can fetch you. Although, remember that you may not be able to get much out of it as you have already judged it as junk.

Step 3 – Prep the car

If you were thinking about how to sell a car to a junkyard with minimal hassle, ensure you have prepped the vehicle well before sending it away. This includes removing all your personal belongings from the vehicle as you may sometimes leave valuable items behind. For instance, you may have kept important documents in the glove compartment. If your car goes to the junkyard with the papers, you run the risk of losing them forever.

Step 4 – Check your state DMV regulations

Each state has different DMV regulations when it comes to relinquishing old junk cars. You must check rules specific to your state before handing your car over. But while particular laws may differ, you may typically need to cancel your registration by returning your license plates. Your state DMV website can list out the detailed procedure for you.

Step 5 – Arrange to have it removed from your house

There are many options when it comes to having your old car removed from the house. You can ask the junkyard personnel to pick it up or have it delivered to them. Some junkyards will pay you to save them the trouble of picking your car up. However, if your junk car is still in running condition, you can drive it over to the junkyard. Of course, this means extra bucks as the value of an old car that can still be driven is much higher.

Why is it a good idea to sell old cars?

An old car, past its life expectancy, is of no real use. It takes up valuable space in your home and can be unpleasant to the eyes. All it probably holds is some sentimental value to the owner. You can sell your old car for a small profit, while the car parts can be recycled and used elsewhere. Also, you can avoid having to take a car loan as you will have some money to make the down payment for your new car.
