Not only is the long wait for the Fitbit Ionic smartwatch over, but we’re also set to be treated to a special edition of the Ionic thanks to a collaboration with sports giant Adidas.
Little is currently known about what we can expect from the upcoming smartwatch, but what’s clear is that it will go head-to-head with the Apple Watch Nike+ edition. It also represents the first time Fitbit has collaborated with a major sports brand, despite previous work with jeweller Tory Burch and designer Public School.
It’s a little surprising from Adidas’ perspective, too. Though the German company told Wareable it would not launch another GPS watch itself, it does appear set to launch its own Chameleon fitness tracker that’s targeted at women and will be compatible with the recently launched All Day Fitness app.
But what do we really know about the Fitbit Ionic Adidas edition? Here’s our breakdown of what we know so far.
With Fitbit revealing little with regard to images of the Adidas edition, it’s difficult to glean the differences it holds to its standard Ionic sibling.
However, what’s clear is that it will be offered with a sportier, perforated strap. Currently, only one colour would appear to be available, with a navy exterior and white underside band featured. However, it’s not a big stretch to imagine at least a couple of strap variations when it does eventually become available.
In terms of the casing and technical specs, it’s set to be the same equation as the standard Ionic smartwatch. So, that means a 1,000-nit, 348 x 250 display made up of curved glass measuring 1.42 inches. Of course, the three physical buttons, which can also be used to work your way around the device, will also be present.
As we’ve noted with the standard Fitbit Ionic, we suspect the design will be fairly divisive. And although the Adidas edition doesn’t appear to be mixing things up too heavily, it does open the door for those who want to pick up the sportiest possible variant of the device.
We already know the Fitbit Ionic is set to be the company’s most feature-packed device to date, and it could be receiving a slight polish through the Adidas edition.
This isn’t anything too drastic, of course, but Fitbit’s indications that it will “leverage Adidas’ robust performance program expertise” suggests it will offer branded workouts once you delve into the device. We imagine those seeking a throng of exclusive watch faces will also be catered for through the special edition.
Other than that, you can expect everything that comes packed into the standard Ionic model: GPS, NFC payments through Fitbit Pay, third-party apps and the promise of four-day-plus battery life.
The smartwatch is also waterproof to 50m, offers notifications and on-device music streaming from Pandora and, as you might expect, all the standard tracking metrics — steps, calories and heart rate tracking and the company’s revamped sleep tracking.
These features aren’t confirmed by either party, but it would be bizarre for any to miss out – particularly on the fitness front.
Price & release
As you’ll have likely gathered, Fitbit is keeping its cards close to its chest with regard to details on the Fitbit Ionic Adidas edition. It’s why we still don’t have any details on pricing just yet, or a specific launch date.
However, what we do know is that it won’t launch until next year. Maybe the company picks the new year to debut the Adidas edition and try to lure in resolution chasers, but for now we’ll have to play the waiting game.
And while we’re left to speculate, we’d be surprised if this variation of the Ionic costs any more than the standard model. After all, while it’s good to see this kind of partnership, the differences aren’t truly big enough to warrant a further price bump on the $299.99 required to pick up the Fitbit Ionic.
