The Xperia Z5 has arrived in three different sizes so when will the next flagship smartphone from Sony launch? Here’s we investigate the Sony Xperia Z6 release date, price and specs rumours and all.
Before we get stuck in, we are fully aware that the Xperia Z5 has only just launched so it’s early days in terms of Xperia Z6 rumours. However, there are a few bits of information floating around and we have a good idea of what we think Sony will do. None of this is fact and should be taken with a healthy pinch of salt.
Sony Xperia Z6 release date rumours
For a while, Sony has bucked the trend of launching a new flagship smartphone once per year; instead choosing to release new devices more regularly at roughly six month intervals.
New phones all the time might seem exciting but it has meant that new models don’t differ from old ones very much. The strategy was a mistake with the Xperia Z3+ which was confusingly called the Xperia Z4 in Japan. It was almost identical to its predecessor and suffered from overheating issues.
When it comes to the Xperia Z6, Sony could announce it at MWC 2016 which takes place in February making the six month gap between IFA 2015. However, this seems unlikely.
It seems that Sony has realised the six-month refresh cycle is too regular and in an interview with Sony Xperia PL one of the firm’s designers gave a strong hint that the Xperia Z6 will arrive in the second half of 2016.
Sony’s Art Director Rikke Gertsen Constein said: “We always work very hands-on with the future,” adding “We are already working on 2016 second half, 17 and 18.”
Our money on the Xperia Z6 release date is September 2016 at IFA.
Sony Xperia Z6 price rumours
There are currently no rumours about the Xperia Z6 price but it’s a little too early for that. However, we always like to have a good go at guessing and we were pretty close when it came to the Xperia Z5 range.
Predicting the price of the Xperia Z6 shouldn’t be too hard since most of Sony’s flagship phone launch at the £550/$825 mark. As for other versions (if any are made) such as an Xperia Z6 Compact or Xperia Z6 Premium, we would expect them to match the Z5 range at around £430/$645 and £630/$945 respectively.
Sony Xperia Z6 specs rumours and what we want/expect
Design-wise we can expect something similar to previous Xperia phones since Sony seems to be continually sticking with the recognisable square shape. We’d like to see something a bit different, though to shake things up a bit – while maintaining that distinctive Sony style. Waterproofing is unlikely to be going anywhere.
It seems Sony has settled on the 5.2in screen size for its flagship Xperia range so it’s unlikely this will change on the Xperia Z6. The resolution is much harder to predict with the firm sticking to Full HD so far instead of jumping to Quad HD.
The 4K screen found on the Z5 Premium may well make its way to the Z6 but we’d prefer if that was reserved for the larger Premium model for those who want it while a Quad HD display would be welcome on the regular model.
It’s widely anticipated that most high-end Android smartphones next year will come with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 processor and that’s what we expect for the Xperia Z6. You can bet there will be 3- or 4GB of RAM and likely 16/32GB of storage.
That might not seem like much but Sony is one of the big name phone makers to stick with offering expandable storage via Micro-SD card slot and we don’t think that feature will be dropped.
Now the Xperia range has a fingerprint scanner (in the new home button) that’s a feature which will almost certainly remain in the Z6. Sony prides itself on long lasting battery life but we’d like to see the addition of wireless charging. With the Xperia Z6 arriving next year, reversible USB Type-C is pretty much a given.
The Xperia Z5 range got the first camera upgrade since the Xperia Z1 with the new 23Mp shooter so will the Xperia Z6 get another upgrade? We think not based on history, at least nothing major but Sony will likely make improvements.
On the software front, the Xperia Z6 will probably run Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
As soon as we heard anything further on the Sony Xperia Z6 we’ll update this article.
