Don’t spin your wheels in vain; here’s a simple explanation that’s much clearer than mud

There are many different 4WD drive systems in the marketplace and 4WD buyers are frequently confused about the relative merits of each type.

So, let’s clear the fog, without getting too technical.

And just to put your mind at ease, we’re only discussing ‘proper’ four-wheel drive systems here; let’s leave to one side for the time being all-wheel drive systems that are increasingly common in passenger cars.

All non-hybrid 4WDs have a main transmission driving through ‘transfer’ gearing that can send drive to the front and rear axles. Most hybrids are different and we’ll come to that later.
