It’s hard out there for a driving enthusiast on a budget. Cars in general are better engineered, more powerful, and better performing than ever, but for people with $25,000 to spend on a new car, the choices are generally between an econobox and an econobox in mini-crossover form. But there is a sliver of the market, perhaps preserved specifically to facilitate magazine spreads like this one, that can serve the frugal car fiend: hatchbacks with manual transmissions. Enthusiast-oriented hatchbacks are a healthy genre of the U.S. car market, despite their relatively narrow appeal.
