Modifier keys, such as Control and Option, work alongside the other keys on your Mac to execute certain shortcuts that aren’t available with only a single key. Thanks to modifier keys, you can easily force-close an app (Option-Command-Esc) or quickly take a screenshot (Command-Shift-4). I wouldn’t really be able to function without them.
