* Short battery life

Bluetooth-enabled earphones are one of the niftiest products you can own nowadays especially if you don’t like dealing with wires or if your smartphone doesn’t have a 3.5mm audio port. Unfortunately, most of these wireless earphones are expensive, except for the QCY-29 Pro.

Design and Construction

The QCY-Q29 Pro is not your typical in-ear wireless earphones that are connected together by a wire and then wirelessly connects to your phone via Bluetooth. Instead, the buds are detached from each other like Apple’s AirPods.

It’s round, like a small pebble, with a painted metal surface with glossy acrylic top and matte bottom. The top part, where the QCY logos are printed are power buttons. Both have microphones on the side for calls, while underneath are pogo pins for charging.

On the hands, the QCY-Q29 Pro feels solid yet light. It feels a bit large on the ears though and doesn’t feel secure. But after picking the right size of tips and placing it properly, it’s snug and didn’t fall off even if we shake our heads. No mention of sweat resistance though.

When you’re done using it, you can simply put it in your pockets or use the carrying case that also doubles as a charger. We’ll discuss more of that later.

Setup is a bit confusing at first and requires some a bit of button pushing in order for the Left and Right buds to discover each other (the manual will guide you through it, and you only have to do it once). Once that is done, just turn on any of the buds and initiate pairing by holding it for 3 to 5 seconds. From there the QCY-Q29 Pro is already discoverable and can pair to your mobile device.

If the second bud is already turned on, it should automatically pair with its sibling. If not, just turn it on and it should pair right away. It sports Bluetooth 4.2 and has an effective range of about 10m.

Playback controls are pretty much straight-forward – press once to pause/play or answer a call, and double press to skip track forward.

Sound Quality

The QCY-Q29 Pro actually sounds quite good for its price. It’s loud as we didn’t find the need to go beyond 70%. It’s bassy, powerful, but a bit muddy, but still good enough for most of the hip-hop and club music we have in our playlist. The mids and highs though lack detail and crispiness making it sound weak or blanketed when playing rock or acoustic music.

Playback quality is also good as we’ve never experienced any delays from both earbuds even though they’re connected wirelessly. Call quality is also good as the person on the other line can easily hear us even when speaking in a normal voice.

Battery Life

Powering the QCY-Q29 Pro is a small 43mAh battery. That said, we’re not getting much playback time at around 3 to 4 hours, but it’s good enough for short trips. When the battery is low, charging is done via the carrying case which carries a 220mAh battery. Once the buds are docked, the LEDs will glow red and then blue when full.

Charging takes about an hour, and we managed about four recharges before we had to charge the carrying case itself.

The QCY-Q29 Pro is a solid option for those looking for affordable wireless earbuds. It has a nice build, decent audio quality, and comes with a cool recharging carrying case. Battery life is short though but if you’re just using it to listen to music while stuck in traffic or in a short gym session, then it’s good enough to keep you entertained.

The QCY-Q29 Pro is priced at Php1,999/$39 and is sold by Hellotronics at Lazada.
