With a smartphone in every pocket, the writing was on the wall for the portable music player. A multi-functional device competing with a single-purpose player, surely it was inevitable that the portable music player went the way of the Dodo? Not so.

If anything, a smartphone highlights the value of a portable music player even more. The circuitry in smartphones has to contend with all sorts of processing and noise that competes with audio playback.
