I’m not sure how many of Audioreviews’ predominantly portable-focused audience will be interested in anything to do with vinyl – but I am, and I get to write here :-P.
For those unfamiliar with the species, a phono preamplifier is a component that corrects the amplitude imbalance of the low vs high frequencies of a record (which exists because otherwise the low notes would give grooves with such big wiggles that hardly anything would fit on a side) and boosts the signal from the pickup cartridge to a level suitable for the ‘line’ input of a regular audio amplifier. These things have always been around, but in the days when vinyl was the main source of recorded music they were built in to most stereo amplifiers and stand-alone ones were ‘boutique’ and usually expensive.
