The safest new cars you can buy in 2020 come from Honda, Kia, Lexus, Lincoln, Genesis, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, and Subaru.

While traffic fatalities have been on the decline of late, more than 30,000 people still lose their lives on American roads each year. Risky driving behaviors such as speeding, driving under the influence, and distracted driving are major culprits, but automakers have found smarter ways to design safer cars and regulators have imposed tougher standards. Improved crumple zones, airbags, and modern driver-assistance features have all made an impact, but not every car on sale today is equal.
