Samsung is reportedly working on a brand new Gear S4 smartwatch and it could arrive alongside the Galaxy Note 9 later this year. With a release on the way, some of you should start thinking about waiting for the Gear S4 to arrive.
As we start pushing into the summer, we’re starting to hear more about Samsung’s plans for the rest of the year. We know the company is working on a Galaxy Note 9. We know it’s working on Android 8.1 Oreoand Bixby 2.0. And we now know that it’s working on a new smartwatch.
Samsung Gear S4 rumors first emerged earlier this year. While vague, we learned the company’s next smartwatch was being developed under the codename Galileo as model number SM-R800. Since then, Gear S4 rumors have started to pickup and the big picture is slowly coming together.
Last year, Samsung chose not to release a true successor for the Tizen-powered Gear S3 smartwatch is launched in late 2016. Instead, the company announced the Gear Sport.
This year, it looks like Samsung will release a true Apple Watch competitor and there are already some great reasons to think about waiting for the Gear S4 to arrive before investing in a new smartwatch. Gear S4 rumors are pointing to a new color, a bigger battery and, if we’re lucky, an improved design.
There are also some reasons why you might want to skip the Gear S4 and go with something else. In this guide we’ll take you through the best reasons to wait for the Gear S4 and a few reasons why you might want to start looking elsewhere.
Wait for Great Battery Life
Samsung’s Gear S3 features a 380 mAh battery. The device delivers decent battery life, but it looks like Samsung will be upgrading the Gear S4.
According to noted leakster Ice Universe, Samsung’s next flagship smartwatch will come with a much larger 470 mAh battery.
The change, if real, would help the device improve on the experience the company delivered back in 2016 with the Gear S3.
If you’re interested in a Samsung smartwatch and you want the best battery life possible, wait for the Gear S4 to arrive.
Wait for the Best Software Support
If you plan on keeping your next smartwatch for awhile, you might want to think about waiting for Samsung’s Gear S4.
While you might be tempted to go with a cheaper version of the Gear smartwatch, the Gear S3 series will lose software support much faster than the Gear S4.
Samsung continues to update the Gear S3 series with new software updates, but that support will end before it stops for the Gear S4.
The Gear S4’s hardware upgrades will ensure that the device gets upgraded with the latest software features for several years to come.
We don’t know much about the software that’ll power the Gear S4, the Gear S3 is powered by Samsung’s Tizen software, but you can expect some notable upgrades on board.
Samsung’s poised to debut Bixby 2.0 (the next version of its virtual assistant) later this year and we could see it arrive alongside the Gear S4.
Wait for a New Color
The Samsung Gear S4 will reportedly come in three color options. One of them in particularly might be worth waiting for.
According to SamMobile, Samsung is working to deliver three Gear S4 color options: Silver, Black, and Gold. The gold is a brand new color and it should appeal to those of you looking to snag a dressier smartwatch.
We don’t know what the gold will look like exactly, but you can get a feel for Samsung’s version of gold by viewing the Sunrise Gold version of the Galaxy S9.
Samsung doesn’t offer a gold Gear S3 option.
Wait for Deals on Other Smartwatches
If you aren’t thrilled with the current prices of top of the line smartwatches like Apple Watch, you might want to wait for the second half of 2018.
You can find great deals on the Apple Watch and Gear S3, but the deepest price cuts will come once we get closer to Samsung and Apple’s big fall launch events.
As we approach the Gear S4 launch, retailers will likely slash the cost of the current models to make them more appealing as they work to clear inventory. In other words, you probably won’t have to wait for the Gear S4 launch to get a good deal.
That said, you might have to wait until the end of summer, or early fall, to get the best deals on the best smartwatches.
Wait for Other Improvements
A Gear S4 LTE is reportedly in development in the United States and it looks like the model will be available on popular U.S. carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon.
In addition to LTE, the Gear S4 is could come with upgraded internals (expect a new processor, more memory), a thinner design, and improvements in areas that matter to smartwatch users, namely health and fitness.
The company is reportedly working on improvements to the the health and fitness features in S Health, the company’s health solution.
The Gear S4 is rumored to have in-depth sleep tracking, something that could come in handy for those of trying maintain a healthy work/life balance.
This will be Samsung’s most powerful smartwatch to date. So if the Gear S3 or the Apple Watch 3 leave you feeling underwhelmed, you might want to stick around and wait for the new Gear S4 models to arrive.
Don’t Wait If You Can’t Wait Until August
If you don’t think you can wait until August to buy your next smartwatch, don’t bother waiting for the Gear S4.
As of right now it looks like Samsung will probably debut the Gear S4 alongside the Galaxy Note 9 and Bixby 2.0 later this year.
We haven’t heard anything about a surprise launch in June or July. Instead, all signs point to a launch date
Right now, it looks like Samsung will launch the Galaxy Note 9 in New York City on August 9th. This date isn’t confirmed, but it comes from a well-known leaker and a report in the The Korean Herald.
This is the most likely launch scenario. We don’t see the Gear S4 coming any sooner than early August. If you can’t wait or simply don’t want to wade through several more weeks of rumor or speculation, think about looking elsewhere.
Don’t Wait If You Find Something You Love
Don’t let the Gear S4 rumors hold you back if you find a device you love.
There are several excellent Gear S4 alternatives out on the market right now. One is Samsung’s very own Gear S3 series.
Samsung didn’t release a full-fledged successor to the Gear S3 in 2017, but it did release two variants: The Gear S3 Classic and the Gear S3 Frontier. Both are worth checking out before you decide to wait on the next model.
And then you have the Apple Watch, Apple’s popular smartwatch that will be a direct competitor for the Gear S4.
Even if you’re a huge fan of Samsung/Tizen/Android, make sure you go hands-on with the Apple Watch before you decide to wait.
There are a ton of other worthwhile options out there including the Ticwatch E, Fitbit Versa, and the LG Watch Style.
Try all of these out before you commit to waiting. Who knows, you might just walk out of the store with a new gadget.
