There are not many decent Android-based tablets on the market, especially when it comes to compact solutions, so the announcement of Huawei Honor Pad 2 in our review was received by fans of such devices with great enthusiasm.
The all-metal case, FHD-screen, powerful stereo speakers, good stuffing and a rich set of delivery – is not it an ideal setting for a modern tablet? Yes, and at a price of $269.99. Somehow too cheap, can something be a trick? We find out in the review.
8.0 inch with 1920 x 1200 Pixels, RAM: 3GB, ROM: 32GB, Battery: 4800mAh, Android 6.0, Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 Octa Core 1.5GHz
Design and Configuration
Manufacturers rarely pamper buyers with a rich set of supplies, but Huawei has grown more generous. The test was a premium version of the tablet with 3/32GB of memory (worth $269.99).
Their design is specially created for Huawei, they are pleased with the fabric winding of the wire and pure detailed sound paired with the built-in DAC AK4376 tablet from Asahi Kasei Microdevices.
In addition to the headphones, the box contains a film on the screen, a cloth for wiping, a clip for extracting the hybrid slot of the nano SIM card and microSD card, cable, charging unit for 2A. In itself, the package is cool and well-thought-out, dense and almost gift-like in appearance.
The tablet is available in two colors – silver and gold. The test was the last option. It is not golden, but the colors of champagne, as it is supposed to be high-end products.
The live tablet looks and feels nice, the elements are in their places, and the control is comfortable even with one hand.
The body made of aerospace aluminum is thin, light and soft to the touch, but strong enough and hard to keep the appearance for as long as possible with accurate handling.
The location of stereo speakers is optimal for horizontal grasping; they do not overlap with hands during games and video viewing. The sound quality was answered by Harman/Kardon specialists, the sound was really very powerful and loud.
The display with a diagonal of 8.0 inches has not only a high resolution of 1920 by 1200 pixels (295ppi) but also a good IPS-matrix with excellent viewing angles (color inversion is uncritical) and saturated colors.
The company calls it the best in its class and, probably, so and you can recall the same 8.0-inch screens with FHD and without AMOLED?
Under the screen is a fingerprint sensor with touch controls. One tap returns back, a long tap is on the main screen, the scanner scrolls to the right or left to show the last application screen.
Alas, the functions cannot be reconfigured, but if you do not need them at all, you can turn off the navigation using the sensor in the settings.
The scanner works smartly and allows you to unlock the tablet without turning on the screen. They learned a finger and the tablet was immediately unlocked.
There are no claims to the assembly of the device, the oleophobic layer is good. You can only find fault with the not-so-symmetrical arrangement of the port under the headphones relative to the corners of the case, as well as in different indents above and below the screen.
Otherwise, we have an excellent metal tablet without any unnecessary details.
Hardware and Performance
Huawei Honor Pad 2 in the test is based on Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 chipset with Octa Core 1.5GHz ( 4 x 1.5GHz + 4 x 1.2GHz ), 3 GB of RAM and Adreno 405 graphics.
In everyday use, no problems are observed, everything flies and flips quickly do not lag. But this applies only to the interface and simple applications.
Because the results in benchmarks are not recorded and in demanding toys, there are problems (with any mode of operation of the processor).
So in “Asphalt Extreme” there are drawdowns up to 14-15 fps, in Dead Trigger 2 the value of frames per second regularly drops to 28, in Riptide GP: Renegade fps is often at 18 fps, and in “World of Tanks” at the maximum chart speed in tense moments, balances between 10-14 fps.
The device is running Android 6.0 Marshmallow with the EMUI 4.1 shell, which differs little from it on the latest smartphones of the company.
This is exactly the same kind of hybrid Android and iOS, with the chips of each system and a lot of brand improvements, optimizers, and improvements.
Minus is not a full-fledged horizontal shell mode, for some reason, it does not always turn over and adapts to landscape orientation, so it’s better to use a tablet as a huge smartphone.
From it, you can call, if you want (the sound is transmitted through the stereo speakers as a speakerphone).
In the settings, the eye protection mode was detected for a more pleasant reading, but it does not turn on automatically according to the schedule or depending on the time of day, so you have to intentionally turn it on every time.
Third-party software, traditionally, is enough for comfortable work with the tablet immediately out of the box, which will please not too advanced users (and advanced easily remove all unnecessary without any dancing with the root).
Here a full set of Google applications, Microsoft office suite, several applications from Opera, Sberbank, Facebook, booking.com, TripAdvisor, Clean Master.
The tablet of Huawei Honor Pad 2 in analisis has equipped with a basic 8-megapixel camera and the 2-megapixel frontal camera, the quality of the photos is average, but the interface is rich in manual settings and many modes.
So, you can play with them if you want and in skillful hands, you will get a little more out of the pictures. The video is written in 1080p, the quality could be better.
Autonomy of the device is not too high for a battery at 4800mAh, but up to 11 hours of the active screen without lowering the resolution it is able to work with active use. This is enough for a busy day.
According to the measurements, in the mode of playing HD-video at maximum brightness, the tablet worked almost 6.5 hours, and the discharge in the Asphalt 8 game per hour with brightness at a comfortable level was 16% (about 6 hours of the game).
Video Review and Unboxing
Huawei Honor Pad 2 in the review turned out to be almost premium design but at the same time affordable and without any trick. You can find fault with the lack of fast charging and USB-C, but that’s if you really want to find cons.
Excellent set, assembly, materials, sound, and screen easily compensate for the average, against the background of the same Honor 8 and Huawei P9, the camera and the best performance in games.
