Yay! The BRZ has finally gone STI!
Sorry dude, it’s not what you really think. Instead of getting more power in the guise of 2.0-litre flat-four turbo engine producing 300hp like in the Impreza-based WRX STI, this special BRZ merely gets cosmetic and dynamic enhancements.
What you see here in official pictures is the BRZ coupe in tS trim, which has been carried out by Subaru Tecnica International. It went on sale officially in Japan earlier this week.
Shucks! So what makes the tS special?
By using expertise from its motorsport development, the chassis of the BRZ has been fine-tuned for enhanced handling. There are special 18-inch wheels, Brembo brake discs and front air splitter.
Inside, there are Recaro-designed front bucket seats and speedometer with the STI logo embedded into it.
The model’s production will be limited to only 300 units.
Why is Subaru reluctant to fit turbo power to the BRZ?
It’s now a well-known fact that the BRZ – and its Toyota 86 sibling – can definitely handle more power because driving enthusiasts are finding the normally aspirated 200hp Boxer engine short on usable power in the mid-ranges.
Of course, a 300hp BRZ with some sort of forced induction shouldn’t be difficult to engineer. But there must be enough demand to justify such an engine, and sources says the numbers don’t add up yet.
Ever since the BRZ (and 86) was launched in 2012, sales haven’t been as attractive as how both Subaru and Toyota have envisioned.
Will they be short-lived cars?
It would be a pity if these jointly developed rear-wheel drive sports cars will be discontinued.
However, replacements for them are now allegedly said to be hanging in the balance (and tilting to that side fans don’t want to see).
