The battle of the big-screen selfie phone has begun!

Tonight OPPO officially announced their F3 Plus smartphone, the plus-sized version of their dual-camera selfie smartphone. It doesn’t take much to figure out that OPPO’s offering is a direct competitor to Vivo’s own V5 Plus, as it too has roughly the same specs and pricing. It’s only fair to put both phones up against each other in this head-to-head because of that. Which Plus-sized selfie phone is better? You be the judge.

Designs that betray their origins

Despite being competitors in the markets they play in, both OPPO and Vivo have very similar-looking phones. Both companies regularly look to Apple for inspiration in the design of their devices, which is evident in both the Vivo V5 Plus and the OPPO F3 Plus. Aluminum unibodies, flat backs, curved corners and rounded frames are what you can expect from both phones.

The main difference between the two is physical size. The F3 Plus is noticeably bigger than the V5 Plus thanks to its bigger display and body. That makes it quite a handful to hold one-handed compared to the V5 Plus. Both phones have their fingerprint scanners on the front.

The OPPO F3 Plus wins with its bigger display

With a bigger body comes a bigger and better display. OPPO’s F3 Plus has a 6-inch full HD IPS display compared to Vivo’s 5.5-inch panel. That increased real-estate means more space to consume content like videos, movies and web pages, though at the cost of comfort when it comes to one-handed use. Some people may not like the awkward size of the OPPO F3 Plus and may settle for the smaller Vivo V5 Plus in terms of screen size.

Faster, more capable processor

OPPO takes another point away from their competitor Vivo by virtue of the faster Qualcomm Snapdragon 653 octa-core processor, compared to the Snapdragon 625 chipset on the Vivo V5 Plus. While the Snapdragon 652 processor is older than the 625, it theoretically has better performance thanks to its sheer number crunching capabilities. Both phones have 64GB of storage, though the F3 Plus wins out since OPPO’s offering offers expandable storage.

Two dual-camera setups, two different philosopies

Both the Vivo V5 Plus and the OPPO F3 Plus have two front facing cameras, but aside from that, both phones use the dual-selfie camera concept quite differently. Vivo’s offering uses a small, secondary camera to take in depth information to add artificial bokeh to the surroundings to blur out unwanted elements like photobombers. OPPO’s implementation is a little different – it uses the secondary 8-megapixel front camera to take extreme 120-degree wide angle selfies for when the regular 16-megapixel f/2.0 aperture camera is not enough. You can finally fit in everyone of your extended family without using a selfie stick.

As for which one is better? Well, it’s entirely up to your needs. It’s kind of like comparing the camera capabilities of LG’s G5 versus Huawei’s P9 – both phones use two rear cameras to take photos, though each one throws in their own gimmick to differentiate themselves from the crowd.

OPPO F3 Plus

The F3 Plus may have a bigger battery, but both score roughly the same in our benchmark tests

OPPO’s F3 Plus theoretically has the bigger advantage here in terms of battery life, since it has a way bigger 4000mAh battery over the Vivo V5 Plus’ 3160mAh unit. In our battery benchmark tests however, both performed roughly the same. How is that possible?

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 653 octa-core processor is built on a 28nm process, while the Snapdragon 625 is built on a 14nm process. Smaller manufacturing processes on processors means better battery performance overall, which reflects on our battery benchmarks. As die sizes shrink, so does the power needed to power them, which leads to better performance overall.

Vivo’s V5 Plus wins in price

OPPO’s F3 Plus is the most expensive selfie expert we’ve ever seen, priced at Php 23,990. That’s a fair chunk of change, even for OPPO. Vivo’s V5 Plus is slightly more palatable though, at Php 19,990.
