The new smartphone kings come from South Korea

The numbers are in: Counterpoint released its April report and indicates that the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus dethroned the iPhone X as the best-selling phones globally, with both getting 2.6% of the market share. Even with its rather high asking price, it did not stop people from buying the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus.

Let us give you five reasons why both Samsung flagships deserve the top spot:

Defiant design makes it stand out of the crowd

Amidst the trend of notched screens and camera bumps, Samsung played it safe by retaining the overall design of the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus and doing very minor tweaks to it. While others may find it boring (though the Lilac Purple color is a looker), Samsung’s approach to the S9 and S9 Plus was effective to consumers afraid of change.

The variable aperture camera is groundbreaking

While people were in awe of Huawei’s triple camera-sporting P20 Pro, Samsung’s variable aperture camera on the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus was a gamechanger. What used to be associated with regular cameras has now arrived in a slim smartphone—sans a camera bumpMajor points for Samsung indeed.

Nothing gets left out

In spite of the added features, Samsung managed to keep all essential ports. You read that right: Aside from having AKG-tuned stereo speakers and wireless charging, the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus retained the good ‘ol headphone jack. Considering most phones had been ditching the century-old connector, Samsung insisted on saving it for our convenience sake.

The curved display is still one of the best out there

Going back to the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus’ design, no smartphone brand was able to come close to the display quality of Samsung’s Quad HD curved display. The dual curved design came with additional features, which made the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus’ displays both intuitive and excellent.

It is one of the fastest phones out there

Before it was dethroned by the Xiaomi Black Shark and OnePlus 6, the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus dominated the rankings in AnTutu based on their April 2018 report. Packed with the latest processor (either an Exynos 9810 or Snapdragon 845 depending on where you live), running games like PUBG Mobile on high settings is a breeze with both Samsung flagships.

Another bonus: Both the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus are one of the few phones that can run the beta version of Asphalt 9 (as of this writing)! Based on our benchmark tests using GameBench, the Galaxy S9 Plus managed a near-consistent average FPS of 29, along with an 88% FPS stability.

With these reasons in mind, it was not surprising for the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus to dethrone the iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus as the top-selling phones globally based on Counterpoint’s report.
