With the wallet-friendly Moto E5 Plus release almost here it’s time to start weighing your options before you buy a budget Android phone. In this guide we’ll go over everything you need to know and explain why you should, and maybe shouldn’t, wait for the impressive Moto E5.

If you’re in the market for a new smartphone you have plenty of options in 2018. Even if you’re on a tight budget, there are a few devices you’ll want to consider. And while the Moto G6 is a great phone for $249, the Moto E5 is even more affordable.

Motorola’s E5 isn’t your only option when it comes to cheap phones. In fact, we’ve outlined a few in the link above. That said, those looking to stay under $200 will want to heavily consider Moto’s latest phone.

Moto E5 Details & Release Date Rumors

The new Moto G6 will likely have the most to offer for under $199. Moto recently confirmed both the new Moto G6 and a new Moto E5 series for 2018. However, the release date is still somewhat of a mystery, although they should arrive before the end of May.

Furthermore, Motorola will offer three different versions of the E5 this year. And while that’s somewhat confusing, the E5 Plus or E5 Play are the two you’ll want to keep in mind. And while the E5 Play is an ultra-affordable phone with a removable battery, it’s the Plus-model that’s exciting. You’ll get a huge 6-inch screen and nearly 2-day battery life at an affordable price. Better yet, the Moto E5 Plus looks like a Galaxy S9 or most phones from 2018 with a long and skinny edge-to-edge display. Pair that with a premium design for under $200, and you can see the appeal. In fact, it’s one of the biggest reasons you’ll want to wait for it before buying something cheap from 2017.

So when can you get one? Well, we’re not sure yet. That said, Motorola typically releases its new phones in May or early June. We’re expecting something similar here in 2018. The company states the Moto G6 and E5 will arrive “this spring”, so we’ll update once we know more. Verizon recently said they’ll arrive around May 24th.

With these phones official and highly tempting, we’re just stuck waiting for an official release date announcement. And with that information on the way, many of you will want to hold off on buying a new phone until you see these budget phones in action. They’re truly impressive for the price.

That said, there are also a few reasons why you might want to skip the budget phone and buy something else today or in the near future.

Wait for the Best Software & Support

Wait for the Best Software & Support

When it comes to buying a budget smartphone you have a lot of choices. However, most of those “budget” phones come with old and outdated software or never see updates.

With the Moto E5, you’ll get the latest Android 8 Oreo out of the box. That’s a big deal, not to mention you know you’ll get updates for at least a year. This is Motorola, after all.

Then, budget phones from most other companies have custom bloatware over stock Android, which makes those updates arrive even later. So while you might be tempted to get a cheaper device by some of the competition, don’t. While the price is one of the biggest factors when it comes to buying the Moto E series, having quality software comes in a close second. It’ll even get Android P faster than most, so that’s a plus.

Wait Because the Wait Is Almost Over

If you’re in need of a budget phone just wait a few weeks longer. If you have to get one now, that’s a bummer. While phones from 2017 are nice, the new Moto E5 and G6 are great devices for the price.

Motorola announced both phones at an event near the end of April, and confirmed the Moto E5 release date is coming “this Spring”. Then, we recently heard from Verizon that the Moto E5 Play is available today, while the better and bigger E5 Plus is coming soon. We’re expecting most carriers in the US to offer this cheap phone around May 24th. Not to mention Walmart, Target, Costco, Amazon, and other retailer and etailers.

So, in just a few weeks you’ll get a great phone for under $200.

Wait for the Better Cameras

Wait for the Better Cameras

You can get a Moto G5, the Huawei Honor 6X, and many other excellent phones for around $200. However, most of those are over a year old and have poor camera experiences.

And while we can’t say the Moto E5 will have the best camera ever, because it won’t, it will be better than older devices. When you buy a budget smartphone the screen and camera are usually two weak spots.

With the Moto E5 Plus, you’ll get a decent 12MP camera on the back that takes great photos and videos. a 12MP f/2.0 aperture lens, actually. Not to mention you’ll get an 8MP front-facing camera for selfies or Snapchat videos. Keep in mind that the more affordable Moto E5 Play has a lower-end camera, but it’s still decent for the price. And while these budget phones and dual cameras can’t compete with the Galaxy S9 or iPhone X, you’ll get something better than the 2017 competition.

Wait to Compare Against the Competition

Wait to Compare Against the Competition

One reason you might want to wait is to see what else gets released this summer. While it’ll be hard to top what Motorola is offering for under $200, some might come close. We’re hearing a new Galaxy S8 Lite is coming. So that’s an idea.

While Motorola typically has the most to offer for $200, others come pretty close. We’re talking about Huawei phones, some cheap LG devices, or even Samsung’s recently leaked Galaxy A6. The big 6-inch HD screen and massive 5,000 mAh battery of the E5 are two bright spots most cheap phones can’t match.

However, we could see something similar from the competition. Moto’s phone also packs 32 GB of storage, which you won’t find in this price range often. For me, it’s the massive 5,000 mAh battery inside. That’s bigger than the 3,500 mAh battery in the flagship Galaxy S9 and should last super long.

Wait Because It’s So Cheap

Wait Because It's So Cheap

The Moto G6 Play starts at $199, while the better G6 is $249. Motorola’s E-line always costs less than the G series and is for those who are really, really on a budget.

And while we don’t know for sure yet, the impressive Moto E5 Plus could come in around $149 or even $169. Making it a heck of a deal. So, wait because this is a cheap phone that’s simply too good to pass up.

We have a list of the best Android Phones for under $100, under $200, and under $300. Most of them can’t quite compare to the E5 Plus though.

Don’t Wait If You Want a Bezel-Free Phone

Don't Wait If You Want a Bezel-Free Phone

If you’re hoping to get a bezel-free phone with a beautiful edge-to-edge screen, don’t wait around. They’re only just starting to hit the market, and you will have bezels on Motorola’s recent smartphones.

If you’re looking to get a stylish phone that looks like it came from 2018, you’ll have to spend a little more money. That’s because the design still resembles something from 2017 or older. Basically, if you want a bezel-free experience like the iPhone X, Galaxy S9, or even the cheaper LG G6, don’t wait around.

One big benefit though, is Motorola’s phones don’t have a notch on the screen. So that’s a plus. However, for the price, the bezels aren’t too big. And, we’re expecting most budget phones this year to have a similar overall design.

Don’t Wait If You Find Something You Love

Don't Wait If You Find Something You Love

And finally, don’t wait if you find something you absolutely love. Basically, don’t let the Moto E5 Plus and its big battery hold you back. It’s enticing, but you do have somewhat similar options if you need something right now.

While we know the Moto G series has some loyal fans, other companies have similar products. In fact, you can likely find something comparable that’s absolutely great for the same price. We’re talking about the Huawei Honor 7X, the new Nokia 6 for 2018, or the upcoming Galaxy A6 we mentioned earlier.

The first two are available right now, as we speak, and have plenty to offer. Even the Nokia 6.1 is an idea. Either way, the Moto E5 is a great phone, but don’t wait around forever. If you find an amazing deal on something right now, go for it. A prime example is this pre-owned Galaxy S8 for $299 at Boost Mobile.

Basically, don’t be afraid to jump on a good deal if you find one.
