Intel Core i5-8300H vs Intel Core i7-8550U – benchmarks and performance comparison

Last time you witnessed a battle between the entry-level Intel Core i5-8300H and the high-end Intel Core i7-8550U. Today we continue our comparisons with yet another 8th gen representative – Intel Core i7-8550U, as the new opponent to the i5 processor.

Specs overview

Let’s turn our heads to the entry-level Intel Core i5-8300H, which is based on the 8th gen Coffee Lake-H architecture. Built through a 14nm process, the chip offers a total of 4 cores and can execute up to 8 threads simultaneously thanks to the Hyper-Threading technology. On top of that, Intel Core i5-8300H runs at a base frequency of 2.30 GHz and can go up to 4.00 GHz in Turbo mode. Other significant specifications include 8MB of L3 Cache, support for up to 2666 MHz dual-channel DDR4 memory controller with a maximum capacity of 64GB, as well as 45W TDP including the iGPU which in this case is the Intel UHD Graphics 630 with a base clock speed of 300MHz and a turbo boost frequency of 1.15 GHz.

Moving on to Intel Core i7-8550U, it is part of the 8th generation Kaby Lake Refresh architecture. Manufactured through a 14nm process, the chip adopts the 2/4 core/thread count using the HyperThreading technology. The speeds vary in the 1.80  – 4.0 GHz range and the TDP is rated at 15W. The specs sheet is complemented by 8MB last level cache, as well as a dual-channel memory controller that supports DDR4-2400 and LPDDR3-2133. However, the integrated GPU here is Intel UHD Graphics 620 clocked at 300-1150 MHz.

For the purposes of this juxtaposition, we have chosen to compare the performance of the two chips found in Acer Nitro 5 AN515-52 and ASUS ZenBook Flip 14 (UX461) respectively. Looking at the charts above, Intel Core i5-8300H outperforms its rival with around 35% when it comes to 3D rendering (tested with Cinebench 15). In addition, the latter shows 15% slower results in the Adobe Photoshop test. On top of that, the Core i5 processor once again surpasses with 29% Intel Core i7-8550U in our raw synthetic benchmarks (tested with Fritz).

Conclusion

In our opinion, it’s best to leave the results from our benchmark tests to speak for themselves. It is obvious that Intel Core i5-8300H smashes its opponent in all 3 of them, it shall be pronounced the winner of today’s comparison.
