Hands-on with the Sony 135mm F1.8 GM

A relatively lightweight lens for portraiture, weddings, sports

Sony has just announced the FE 135mm F1.8 G Master (GM) lens, its 9th GM lens and 31st native full-frame E-mount lens. According to Sony, the GM line promises both ‘high resolution and exquisite bokeh’, and our initial impressions after shooting with the lens are certainly positive.

Sony tells us the design of this lens is new, and entirely different from the A-mount Sonnar 135mm F1.8 ZA lens. At 950g (2.1lb), it’s 280g (0.62lb) lighter than the Sigma Art 135mm F1.8 lens, which – at 1230g (2.7lb) – weighs 30% more than the Sony. That’s a significant weight difference, and the 135mm GM balances reasonably well on an a9 or Mark III Alpha-series full-frame body.

USB 3.2’s horrible new branding scheme may create confusion for PC buyers

It’s hard to believe that USB branding has become more confusing, but it has.

The USB standard has just gotten even more confusing for end users. If you’re one of the three people in the world who actually knew the difference between USB 2.0, USB 3.0, USB 3.1 Gen 1/Gen 2, and so on, …well, sorry: USB 3.2 has been announced, and all the names change once again.

On the bright side, the USB-IF makes it explicitly clear (PDF) that the latest USB 3.2 specification provides a whopping 20Gbps of throughput. But that’s about the only thing that’s straightforward, because USB 3.2 sucks up the previous specs and makes them part of its own. The new, horrifically-named spec is “USB 3.2 Gen 2×2.”

Vive Focus Plus first look: Standalone VR with a big control boost

MWC 2019: This VR headset is not built for fun though

It was almost a year ago that I was at the same booth at MWC trying out the Vive Focus for the first time. The standalone VR headset with its dinky controller was still only available in China before it finally broke out into the West at the end of 2018.

Now the headset is back with a slightly redesigned headset and pair of more sophisticated looking controllers. But I’m not going to shoot baddies and watch 360-degree videos with it this time. This time, I’m getting to play nurse.

Electric luxury sedan face-off: Polestar 2 vs. Tesla Model 3

Volvo sister company Polestar isn’t shy about its intentions to lock horns with Tesla. Its first model, simply called 1. is more of an eco-friendly grand-tourer than a true Tesla fighter, but its second model — called, you guessed it, 2 — is aimed directly at the Model 3. It’s more upmarket than cheaper electric cars like the Chevrolet Bolt and the Nissan Leaf, it’s jam-packed with tech, it stands out with a head-turning design, and its’s shaping up to be the 3’s first real rival. Here is how these two electric sedans compare, and how they differ.

Hands on: Microsoft HoloLens 2 review

Microsoft’s HoloLens venture is now a little more than four years old, and while it initially launched with what we thought would be a consumer bent as well as its application in the business world, it seems now Microsoft believes the only purpose of this headset is for enterprise users.

HoloLens has grown in the past few years into a tool that can be genuinely useful for a wide range of businesses.

2019 Toyota Camry XLE V6 review

Few vehicles are as ubiquitous as the Toyota Camry.

Toyota has always managed to make it a consistent car that appeals to the masses, which is probably why a family member, a close friend, or an acquaintance you know has one. Being the dependable, stable option, though, doesn’t pay the bills anymore. And one look at the 2019 Toyota Camry reveals that this sedan is far off from the one your grandparents are driving.

2019 Toyota Tacoma Review

The 2019 Toyota Tacoma is the go-to midsize pickup for those who have every intention of getting their truck dirty. Very dirty. That goes for every model, but really, it’s the three TRD off-roading models that really stand out, allowing the Tacoma to venture places more civilized rivals wouldn’t dare. They also do so with styling and a general rugged personality that are quite simply cool.
