2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback first drive: Doubling-down on surprise

Necessity is the mother of invention, and the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback is the perfect example of what can happen when you embrace the evaporation of your comfort zone. With is Millennially-minded Scion sub-brand getting the axe in 2016, Toyota could no longer focus on that audience’s parents and grandparents alone. Instead, it doubled-down on tech, engineering cleverness, and value, and in the process made a new Corolla that actually has curb appeal.

Toyota has been upending its status quo when it comes to design for a while now, and the 2019 Corolla Hatchback is an excellent example of that at work. At the front there’s a little of the Camry’s X-themed aggression, with squinting Triple-J LED headlamps pinched atop an oversized grille. Those LEDs are standard on the entry-level SE trim, too, along with 16-inch alloys, LED taillamp, and a chrome tailpipe diffuser.

Xiaomi Mi 6X (Mi A2) vs Redmi Note 5 Pro: Specification comparison

Xiaomi unveiled the Mi 6X in China a few days back and there is a possibility that the device might make its way onto Indian shores. The device’s predecessor, the Mi 5X, was launched in India as the Mi A1, so there is a chance that this new device might be the Mi A2. The Xiaomi Mi A1 was the first smartphone by the company that offered stock Android as it was a part of Google Android One Program. It’s possible that Xiaomi may follow suit with the Mi A2 if the company decides to launch the phone in India.

Another thing to note was that the Xiaomi Mi A1 was priced quite competitively and was only a few thousand Rupees more expensive than the Redmi Note 4. Keeping that in mind, here’s a spec comparison between the Xiaomi Mi 6X (Mi A2) and the current flagship of the Redmi range in India, the Redmi Note 5 Pro.

Toyota Yaris v. Honda City v. Hyundai Verna v. Maruti Ciaz: Equipment, features and technology compared

Last week, we wrote a detailed explanation of how all the variants of the new Toyota Yaris differ in terms of what they offer. While that is an important factor, what’s even more important is to figure out how the Toyota Yaris fares against its rivals. The C-segment, mid-size family sedan category has been seeing a revival in terms of numbers, after having always been a strong-selling segment barring a more recent drop in numbers. Now, sales have picked up again, buoyed by the average car buyer’s propensity on spending a little extra for a few more features, and car makers offering segment-first convenience, safety and comfort features with every new launch. At the moment, the mid-size sedan category in India feature the updated Hyundai Verna, the relatively newer Maruti Ciaz and the evergreen Honda City. Each have something new to offer, but have they left out enough space for the Toyota Yaris to fit in? Here’s what we found.

Ant Audio W59 Review

Ant Audio W59: Detailed Review

The W59 is one of the two wired IEMS from Ant Audio currently on their official portfolio, with the other one being the more humble W55. While not one of the most premium units we’ve had in our labs, the W59 does catch the eye with its unique design. But does it match the same in terms of audio performance? Let’s find out.

Build and design

Right out of the box, you will notice that the W59 sports a unique design. The unit makes no efforts to conceal its dual drivers, in fact, it takes the opposite approach and puts golden back caps on each driver to make them even more conspicuous.

Kia Soul EV review: Good, green SUV fun

The Kia Soul EV was launched in 2014 as one of the first pure electric carson the road. It’s unique in a number of ways, not least because it made an electric vehicle (EV) out of an existing model of car.

It’s also a crossover or SUV (in the loosest sense of the word), which is perhaps more interesting – as few EVs have yet to touch this sector. There’s the Tesla Model X (which is twice the price in its cheapest guise), and there’s the incoming Jaguar I-Pace (which is also twice the price).

That leaves the slightly smaller and altogether less SUV-like BMW i3 as potentially the biggest current competitor in the pure electric market. So how does the Soul EV fare?

Fujifilm X-A5 Review

Two years ago, Fujifilm released the entry-level X-A3 which proved to be a capable mirrorless camera to anyone who wanted to step up from smartphone photography due to its compact body, decent sensor, and affordable price point.

Fast forward to 2018, the company released a successor to the X-A3 in the form of the X-A5, which is considered as the lightest and smallest mirrorless camera in the X-series and is now capable of shooting 4K at 15fps.

Now the looming question is: why did folks from Fuji skip number 4? Kidding aside, let’s find out what’s new with the X-A5 and if it is worth the penny. Let’s begin.

Campfire Audio Cascade Review – Substance with style

Acknowledgement

These headphones have been provided to me by Campfire Audio for the purposes of this review, along with their SXC8 4.4mm balanced cable. There is no incentive (financial or otherwise) for giving these headphones a positive review, and all the words and opinions expressed within are my own (no matter how misguided!), with no editorial input from Campfire Audio.

Introduction

Campfire Audio are a brand that are quickly becoming one of the defacto “go to” manufacturers on the current audiophile scene for high end portable audio. Based out of Portland, Oregon (USA) and headed up by Ken Ball, this American audio powerhouse originally sprang from Ken’s other business selling high end audio components and amplification, ALO Audio.

Toyota LandCruiser Prado 2018 Review : Tow Test

The MY18 Toyota LandCruiser Prado auto can now to 500kg more than before, but can it handle the extra weight?

Built to tow

With a 2500kg towing capacity, the Toyota LandCruiser Prado was the odd one out in a category where 3000kg has become the norm. Caravan manufacturers would even advertise their vans as being ‘LandCruiser Prado friendly’.

The problem has been that to get all the gear people want in a larger, luxury caravan, (and some boats) they soon weigh closer to 3000kg all up. Not very friendly for LandCruiser Prados at all.

Yet as part of a MY18 update late last year, Toyota bumped up the towing capacity  for automatic LandCruiser Prado to 3000kg (LandCruiser Prado manual remains at 2500kg).

Lenovo ThinkPad E580 review – modern business device with a great legacy behind it

Recently we showed you a laptop that is an attempt by a company to combine the rigidity of the past with modern looks – the ThinkPad E480. Today we are looking at essentially the same shell but in larger form factor – the 15.6-inch Lenovo ThinkPad E580. Lenovo is well known for its super sturdy ThinkPad products, dating all the way back to the IBM age. But modern times need modern methods. The old square body is not that appealing anymore. In an era of super thin MacBooks and even slimmer Dell XPS business devices, the ThinkPad series would be doomed if they didn’t change something. Okay, you are thinking why would we talk about MacBooks and XPSes when the ThinkPad E580 starts at $630. Well, because this device offers all that you need.

First of all, the CPU line-up of this model is on point – ultra-low-voltage and super powerful Core i5-8250 and Core i7-8550U. Lenovo also provides the option of a dedicated Radeon RX 550 graphics card, although our review unit features only the integrated HD Graphics 620U. And one more time we want to emphasize that this model tries to offer everything you actually need in the business segment (like a fast SSD with NVMe support, for example).

Best Rugged Smartphones in 2018: Best Devices for Travelers & Field workers

In this current market scenario, every customer wants their mobile phones to be highly durable, especially those who are into field works because of their working conditions, which is very risky for delicate smartphones, so the question arises what phone we could buy? A smartphone which is durable as well as a handful to have, a phone that fulfills all the basic needs which can be operated without any special care. A few years ago this was just a dream but as we evolved there came smartphones which fall right under this category. They are now popularly known as Rugged smartphones.

The thing which distinguishes Rugged smartphones from other mobile phones is their tougher than rock durability and the unbreakable, water resistant, dust proof shatterproof properties making it one of the toughest electronic device.

2018 Mazda BT-50 Review

Is minor cosmetic surgery and a spec upgrade enough to keep the Mazda BT-50 ute relevant?

The Mazda BT-50 shares much with the jointly-developed Ford Ranger — that is, except for the Ranger’s booming sales numbers. Part of the blame it appears lies in the fact buyers want blokey, tough-looking utes, not ones with smooth and graceful lines like the BT-50’s. Mazda hopes a more angular nose developed specifically for Australia – and more standard equipment – will make the 2018 BT-50 man-up in sales until an all-new replacement arrives post-2020.

Not so smiley

The facelifted 2018 Mazda BT-50 has lost some of its smile for a more serious, chiselled look.

Joyroom P1 Ultrathin Earhook Bluetooth Earphone REVIEW

A creatively designed Bluetooth headset — lacks clarity.

For the past several years, my iPhone has always had a Bluetooth headset right alongside it. I like having the option of hands-free communication and a good Bluetooth headset can provide that. I’ve had just about every style possible and lately, I’ve turned almost entirely to my Apple AirPods as my Bluetooth headsets of choice. They are a great all-in-one option for entertainment and communication alike. But, at $160 for a pair, they aren’t the most cost-effective option for a functional Bluetooth headset out there. My first few Bluetooth headsets were single-earpiece devices. So, when I started looking into budget-friendly headsets, that’s what I started with. One of the most inexpensive Bluetooth headset’s I found was through online retailer Banggood.com. They offer an ear hook style headphone from Joyroom for less than $15 that gets the job done.

Razer Hyperflux review: A wireless mouse that has no battery inside—believe it!

It sounds like science fiction—but it’s real, and it works.

It sounds like science fiction—Razer’s new Mamba Hyperflux is a wireless mouse without a battery inside. It’s real though and it works, aside from a few edge-case scenarios.

Razer’s Mamba Hyperflux mouse and Firefly Hyperflux charging-pad combo sound like science fiction. Get this: It’s a wireless mouse… without a battery. When I heard about it at CES, I didn’t believe it would work. Now that I’ve had it in my hands for a few weeks I can confirm that, yes, it does. Even knowing logically how the trick works, I’m nevertheless fascinated by it.

It’s only when the illusion breaks, that I’m reminded, oh yeah, this is a real piece of new technology, complete with some first-generation flaws.

This review is part of our roundup of best gaming mice. Go there for details on competing products and how we tested them.

Four mirrorless cameras under Rs 60,000 that are great alternatives to DSLRs

These days, everyone has easy means to figure out if they not only have the passion, but also the eye for photography. Smartphones have allowed people to explore new avenues with the artform, but if you find yourself tumbling down the photographic rabbit hole, you’ve obviously toyed with the idea of getting a DSLR for yourself. But be warned, as someone who is so used to using compact and incredibly light smartphones to take photos, a DSLR, in contrast, is big and heavy. mirrorless cameras are in some ways, best of both the worlds for the given price. IF you have Rs. 60,000 to spend on a shiny new camera, here are some options, each of them being a great alternative to a full-sized DSLR.

Sony Alpha A6000

The Sony A6000 may be a few years old now, with newer models in the market (which are far more expensive), but it is still very much a wonderful shooting machine. Its 24-megapixel back-side illuminated APS-C sensor has great low light performance.

Windows 10 April 2018 update: 5 reasons we’re excited

The Windows 10 April 2018 update is coming, making it to your PC of choice just under the wire, and there are several reasons to be excited. The update – the fifth feature pack to be released since Windows 10 first launched – is expected to begin installing on Monday, sneaking in just before the month ends. Here’s why you should care.

Focus Assist locks you away from digital distractions

It’s tough to concentrate when you have the internet at your fingertips, so the Windows 10 April 2018 update wants to help you go cold turkey. Focus Assist is effectively do-not-disturb for your desktop, blocking out all extraneous alerts as you work on whatever is most pressing. No email pop-ups, no Facebook notifications, and no app updates.

2018 Kawasaki H2 SX: What’s Hot And What’s Not?

We already performed a complete road test with amazing video on Kawasaki’s amazing new H2 SX SE a while ago. But why let that stop us from revisiting the highest-ranked bike I ever raved about, with a 97.5% approval rating, and with the first engine I ever gave a perfect 20?

HOT!

  • SMOOOOTH. She feels like she’s balanced and blueprinted. Do they still do that with hot rod engines? If you’ve been turned off of big inline Fours because you don’t like buzz, tingle, or vibration – you need to take this one for a test ride. Dual counterbalancers render it silky smooth. Does the impeller spinning 9.2 times faster than the crank cancel vibes too? Do steel tube frames damp out vibes better than aluminum beam ones?

OnePlus 6 vs Huawei P20/P20 Pro: What’s the rumoured difference?

OnePlus and Huawei are arguably the two most recognisable smartphone brands to come out of China and make a success in Western markets over the last few years. The latter has recently launched its flagship phones for 2018 in the P20 and P20 Pro, while the former is going to unveil its next giant-slayer at a London event on 16 May.

Although the OnePlus 6 hasn’t been announced, there are plenty of confirmed details. Enough to give us an informed comparison point. So, should you buy the P20, or wait to find out more about the OnePlus 6?

Nest Hello review: A premium doorbell for the paranoid homeowner

Last September, Nest introduced several new offerings aimed at beefing up your home security. There was the Nest Secure alarm system, an outdoor version of its Nest Cam iQ and the Nest Hello, its first-ever video doorbell. The Hello is obviously Nest’s answer to Ring, a competing video-enabled doorbell brand which has since been snapped up by Amazon.

Summary

Nest’s first video doorbell doubles as a security camera. The HDR video looks great, and the 4:3 aspect ratio combined with a 160-degree field-of-view means you can get a full look at your guest before opening the door. We recommend getting the Nest Aware subscription, which unlocks continuous 24/7 live video recording, at least five days’ worth of archives, and face recognition. The Hello is especially useful if you have other Google or Nest products in your home.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S review: The flagship and the folly

All current flagships worth their salt are shrinking screen bezel, looking to make the most display-forward design possible. But it wasn’t one of the “big three” that started this trend. It was Xiaomi. Yep, a Chinese brand name you may not have heard much about in the UK (for the simple reason that the company doesn’t officially distribute here, yet), is at the forefront of smartphone design.

In the Mi Mix 2 from 2017, Xiaomi took trim bezel design to the nth degree, delivering a powerful, attractive and affordable phone like no other. Its 2018 follow-up, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, follows a similar footprint, but amps up the internal power and goes all iPhone X in its dual camera approach, too.

Having picked up a handset from the Mi Mix 2S launch event in Shanghai, we’ve had the phone over in ol’ Blighty for a month. Now with its most recent software on board – the very same as consumers will find in purchased handsets – just how well does Xiaomi’s latest flagship handle, and what compromises are there to consider?

Logitech G513 Review: A great (but expensive) keyboard for the RGB-obsessed

If you’re looking for an RGB mechanical keyboard, there are plenty out there to choose from. Many gaming keyboards these days have started using mechanical switches instead of membrane ones, and while most of those seem to use some kind of Cherry MX switches, Logitech has taken things one step further by developing its own switch, dubbed Romer-G. These switches feature in the Logitech G513 Keyboard, the more expensive successor to the G413, and in fact they now come in two different varieties: tactile and linear. How does Romer-G hold up, though? Beyond that, is the G513 a gaming keyboard worth its somewhat high asking price?

Design

We can debate endlessly about the minute differences between Cherry MX and Romer-G switches, but at the end of the day, design is an aspect that reigns supreme. It doesn’t matter how much rollover a keyboard may offer or how responsive its keys may be if the keyboard itself is designed poorly. Happily, the G513 features a design worth getting excited about.

Windows 10 April 2018 Update: Here’s what’s new

The next update for Windows 10 is nearly here. Once known as the Windows 10 Spring Creators Update, Microsoft has now decided to call this the Windows 10 April 2018 Update. After being delayed beyond its originally intended release date, Microsoft will soon be ready to make it available to the masses, and that’s good news for anyone who might be in need of a productivity boost.

The April 2018 update for Windows 10 is a little on the slim side, at least compared to previous updates, but the few features it adds are big. Unquestionably, the main draw of this update will be Windows 10’s new Timeline feature. We’ve heard about Timeline before, and in short, it’s a new tool you can use to quickly recall recent files you may have viewed or worked on.

Timeline goes back a total of 30 days, and it incorporates a number of Windows 10 apps. It’s also cross-platform, so as long as you’re signed into your Microsoft account while you’re using Edge or Office 365 on a mobile device, you can recall those webpages or documents later on your PC. Timeline is something that’s been available in preview builds for quite some time now, so Microsoft has had a lot of time to fine tune it for its official debut.

AirPort alternatives: Our top 4 Mesh WiFi systems

Apple may be killing its AirPort router family, but there are some great mesh networking replacements that promise just as much convenience but even more speed. Rather than focusing on a single box to which every WiFi device in your home is connected, mesh routers use two or more units in different locations, spreading coverage in the name of keeping performance at its best. Read on for our top four picks.

Google Wifi

Google Wifi wasn’t the company’s first attempt at the router segment, but its mesh system is undoubtedly its best. Plug the trio of compact, circular units in, and you’ll get up to 4,500 square feet of coverage. Setup is straightforward, using Google’s app for iOS or Android, and it’s designed to update itself automatically in the background so you should never be on old, less-secure firmware.

Audeara A-01 headphones review

Headphones are a dime a plenty, many of them promising the best audio your ears will have the pleasure to ever hear. All of them, however, make one fatal assumption: that we all hear perfectly and in the same way. From a business standpoint, it is understandable. Fine-tuning audio equipment to unique individual capabilities puts a heavy burden on companies.

Last year, Australian startup Audeara came up with an alternative: let the users tune their headphones themselves. And thus the Audeara A-01 rose from the crowdfunding ocean and we put it on our ears to hear that promise come to life.

The proposal was simple. Different people have different hearing capacities and that’s just speaking for those with “normal” hearing. Those with certain hearing defects require different audio settings. Since it’s too impractical and expensive to customize audio profiles during production or even during the point of sale, Audeara proposed to do it after sales. That is, let the user determine and set his or her own hearing profile through a series of tests. But since no company would take that risk, Audeara took to Kickstarter to make it happen.

Samsung 970 EVO review: Strong competition for the best budget NVMe SSD

Samsung’s lower-priced M.2 NVMe SSD rivals, but can’t unseat WD’s Black NVMe.

Though it isn’t the equal of WD’s Black NVMe in sustained writing, the 970 EVO nonetheless provides the same performance the other 99 percent of the time. A much better deal than its 970 Pro sibling, though the latter is still top dog performance-wise.

Samsung’s EVO series has owned the title of fastest TLC-based M.2 NVMe SSD since there has been such a thing. But unfortunately for the company, that distinction went the way of the dodo with the release of the WD’s game-changing Black NVMe earlier this month.

Samsung’s response? The brand new 970 EVO. However, it’s a case of darn close, but no cigar—the Samsung 970 EVO outperforms the WD in several tests, but falls short in sustained write performance with larger amounts of data. That said, the shortfall is liable to affect few users.

Alienware 17 R5 vs Alienware 17 R4 – what are the differences?

Last time we briefly covered the specs sheet of the new Alienware 17 R5 high-end gaming series and it is now time to draw a parallel between this gaming beast and its predecessor – the Alienware 17 R4.

The first difference hides in the hardware options. While Alienware 17 R5 boasts up to the latest 8th gen overclockable Intel Core i9-8950HK processor, its rival offers only up to 7th gen Intel Core options. However, both models can be configured with up to an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 (8GB GDDR5X) graphics card. In terms of memory, the Alienware 17 R5 supports Intel Optane PCIe 3.0 x2 [60/120GB].

DJI MAVIC PRO PLATINUM REVIEW – WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCES

DJI’s Mavic Pro drone already has fantastic battery life, but it’s still got nothing on its upgraded sibling. Announced on Thursday at IFA 2017 in Berlin, the $1,099 Mavic Pro Platinum’s propellers make it 60 percent quieter than the $999 Mavic Pro, DJI said.

It can also fly for up to 30 minutes, 11 percent longer than its predecessor “Dji Mavic Pro”.
The upgraded drone gets its moniker for its new “sleek platinum finish.” In addition to having a longer battery life, Platinum is also 60 percent quieter than its predecessor.

DJI says it achieved an increase in flight time and significant noise reduction by using some new internal components and freshly designed propellers.

The good news is that the current Mavic Pro model is also compatible with the new propellers, so even older users can lessen the noise their units make.

Range Rover Sport SVR review: Land Rover lets its hair down

Does anyone really need a Range Rover that can hurl itself from 0-60mph quicker than a Ferrari F355 while making a sound like a thunderstorm trapped in a bass drum? Probably not. But boy-oh-boy is it fun.

Frankly, we could probably conclude the review there, as the decision to pick this bonkers 575bhp hotrod over the standard Range Rover Sportwill always be ruled by your heart rather than your head.

To leave it at that, however, would be doing a massive disservice to this car. Because underneath the garish carbon fibre-adorned exterior the RR SVR is a remarkably talented machine.

The Range Rover Sport SVR is a product of Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division. That might sound like a covert organisation operating deep behind enemy lines, but it’s more like Q-Branch, tasked with creating one-offs, halo models and special editions.

Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro: Performance compared

The mid-range market received a spec-bump in the form of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro earlier this year. The phone upped the ante in terms of the hardware offered at that price, and surely enough, became quite popular with the masses. But not long after, Asus came out with the Zenfone Max Pro M1 with similar hardware but with two trump cards — Stock Android 8.1 and a cheaper price.

That makes for an interesting choice for the buyer. Xiaomi definitely has the fan following and has developed somewhat of a legacy in India after becoming the numero uno in the country in terms of market share. The company now sells phones in millions and availability is always an issue. Asus, on the other hand, haven’t had the best of times recently. But with the Zenfone Max Pro, Asus may have just cracked a formula of making a successful mid-ranger. The Taiwanese company has enough firepower in its offering to take on the Chinese upstart.
